Bernardo Dovizi, one of the most famous secretaries of the early Italian Reinassance, is best known for his literary works and for being the patron of Raffaello rather than for his endeavors in diplomacy. By deciding to follow the interests of Giovanni de’ Medici, Dovizi made some poor political decisions in his career but, in spite of this, he cunningly managed to get his patron become the Pope. The "Calandra" is a work that depicts well the author’s ideas, in between parody and classicism. From his works, Epistolario and Ricordi, it appears that the main strength of Dovizi is his irony, through which he manages to become almost an accomplice with his patron. Alongside with the iconological choice of the frescoes of his Stufetta and Loggia in the Vatican, he assumes the posture of the secretary-jester, as it was portrayed by Baldassarre Castiglione in "The Book of the Courtier": the satyr that washes into the room, used as bathroom, corresponds to the most famous pose of the patron who insists on these burlesque and mocking characteristics, although relating to Ovid and Plato. Bibbiena seems to be aware of how much the man that exceeds in praise himself appears unbearable, therefore, in his relations with members of the ruling class, he often assumes a playful attitude. In the Rome of Leo X, because of the Socratic 'serio ludere', such attitude was accepted and admired. The best instruments of Bibbiena are the pleasantness and a careful selection of humanistic ideals. Such ideals were those that suited better the environment in which he, the courtier, had to operate, and were used in his works. [less ▲]

Blattmasken belong to vegetalized human figures used in parietal decoration of nymphaei and domestic ponds. Their use depends on the process of iconographic forms’ transmission already highlighted between the parietal mosaic, the italic mural painting of Ist century a.C. and the African ground mosaic. This transfer is discussed in the light of two cases : the House of Neptune and Amphitrite at Herculanum and the House of the Nymphs at Neapolis. The study is based on their iconographical environments and on their typology. It highlights two different symbolic conceptions of the motive. [less ▲]

Introduction. Research on cognitive control suggests an age-related decline in proactive control abilities (anticipatory control), whereas reactive control (following conflict detection) seems to remain intact. As proactive and reactive control abilities are associated with specific brain networks, this study investigated age-related effects on the neural substrates associated with each kind of control. Methods. In an event-related fMRI study, a modified version of the Stroop task was administered to groups of 20 young and 20 older healthy adults. Based on the theory of dual mechanisms of control, the Stroop task has been built to induce proactive or reactive control depending on task context. Results. Behavioral results (p < .05) indicated faster processing of interfering items in the mostly incongruent (MI) than the mostly congruent (MC) context in both young and older participants. fMRI results showed that reactive control is associated with increased activity in left frontal areas for older participants. For proactive control, decreased activity in the bilateral anterior cingulate cortex was associated with more activity in the right middle frontal gyrus in the older than the younger group. Conclusion. These observations support the hypothesis that aging affects the neural networks associated with reactive and proactive cognitive control differentially. These age-related changes are very similar to those observed in young adults with low dopamine availability, suggesting that a general mechanism (prefrontal dopamine availability) may modulate brain networks associated with various kinds of cognitive control. [less ▲]

Recently, gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) has been added in EuropeanUnion (EU) legislation as an alternative to magnetic sector high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for the analysis of dioxins and dioxin like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCB) in food and feed. In this study the performance of APGC–MS/MS compared to GC–HRMS is investigated and compared with EU legislation. The study includes the legislative parameters, relative intermediate precision standard devia-tion (SRw,rel), trueness, sensitivity, linear range and ion ratio tolerance. In addition, over 200 real samplesof large variety and spanning several orders of magnitude in concentration were analyzed by both techniques and the selectivity was evaluated by comparing chromatograms. The SRw,rel and trueness were evaluated using (in-house) reference samples and fulfill to EU legislation, though the SRw,rel was better with GC–HRMS. The sensitivity was considerably better than of GC–HRMS while the linear range was similar. Ion ratios were mostly within the tolerable range of ±15%. A (temporary unresolved) systematic deviation in ion ratio was observed for several congeners, yet this did not lead to exceeding of the maxi-mum ion ratio limits. The APGC–MS/MS results for the non-dioxin-like-PCBs (ndl-PCBs) were negatively biased, particularly for PCB138 and 153 in contaminated samples. The selectivity of APGC–MS/MS was lower for several matrices. Particularly for contaminated samples, interfering peaks were observed in the APGC chromatograms of the native compounds (dioxins) and labeled internal standards (PCBs). These can lead to biased results and ultimately to false positive samples. It was concluded that the determination of dioxins and PCBs using APGC–MS/MS meets the requirements set by the European Commission. However, due to generally better selectivity and SRw,rel, GC–HRMS is the preferred method for monitoring purposes. [less ▲]

Several lines of evidence indicate that early-life inflammation may predispose to mental illness, including depression, in later-life. We investigated the impact of perinatal exposure to polluted eels on neonatal, postnatal, and adult brain inflammation, and on the resignation behavior of male and female adult offspring mice. The effects of maternal standard diet (laboratory food) were compared to the same diet enriched with low, intermediate, or highly polluted eels. Brain inflammatory markers including cytokines were assessed in offspring mice on the day of birth (i.e., on the postnatal day–PND 1), upon weaning (PND 21) and at adulthood (PND 100). Plasma myeloperoxidase and corticosterone levels were evaluated at PND 100. Immobility behavior of offspring was assessed in adulthood (i.e., at PNDs 95–100), using the tail suspension and forced swimming tests. Chronic brain inflammation was found in male and female offspring mice compared to controls, as assessed at PNDs 1, 21, and 100. The level of myeloperoxidase was found to be significantly higher in both adult males and females vs. control offspring. However, high corticosterone levels were only found in male offspring mice that were perinatally exposed to eels, suggesting a gender-selective dysregulation of the adult hypothalamicpituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis. Gender-specific differences were also detected in adulthood in regard to offspring resignation behavior. Thus, compared to controls, males, but not females, whose mothers were fed eels during pregnancy and lactation exhibited a depressive-like behavior in adult age in both behavioral models of depression. Depressive symptoms were more pronounced in male mice perinatally exposed to either intermediate or highly polluted eels than those exposed to only lowly polluted eels. Our results indicate that early-life inflammatory insult is a plausible causative factor that induce the depressive phenotype exhibited by male adult offspring mice, most likely through a gender-specific HPA axis enhanced activation. Cold-formed steel elements are being used more frequently on construction sites because of the good strength-to-cost ratio. However, insufficient studies are published examining the properties of these constructions. This paper presents a study of cold formed steel bolted gusset plate connections. A “three springs” mechanical model to calculate joint stiffness is presented. Then the results predicted through the proposed model are validated through comparisons to experimental and finite element results. [less ▲]

Decreased thiamine and reduced activity of thiamine diphosphate (ThDP)-dependent 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (OGDH) cause neurodegeneration. We hypothesized on concerted cell-specific regulation of the thiamine metabolism and ThDP-dependent reactions. We identified a smaller thiamine pool, a lower expression of the mitochondrial ThDP transporter, and a higher expression of OGDH in rat astrocytes versus neuroblastoma N2A. According to the data, the astrocytic OGDH may be up-regulated by an increase in intracellular ThDP, while the neuroblastomal OGDH functions at full ThDP saturation. Indeed, in rat astrocytes and brain cortex, OGDH inhibition by succinyl phosphonate (SP) enlarged the pool of thiamine compounds. Increased ThDP level in response to the OGDH inhibition presumably up-regulated the enzyme to compensate for a decrease in reducing power which occurred in SP-treated astrocytes. Under the same SP treatment of N2A cells, their thiamine pool and reducing power were unchanged, although SP action was evident from accumulation of glutamate. The presented data indicate that functional interplay between OGDH, other proteins of the tricarbocylic acid cycle and proteins of thiamine metabolism is an important determinant of physiology-specific networks and their homeostatic mechanisms. The replenishment and persistence of marine species is contingent on dispersing larvae locating suitable habitat and surviving to a reproductive stage. Pelagic larvae rely on environmental cues to make behavioural decisions with chemical information being important for habitat selection at settlement. We explored the sensory world of crustaceans and fishes focusing on the impact anthropogenic alterations (ocean acidification, red soil, pesticide) have on conspecific chemical signals used by larvae for habitat selection. Crustacean (Stenopus hispidus) and fish (Chromis viridis) larvae recognized their conspecifics via chemical signals under control conditions. In the presence of acidified water, red soil or pesticide, the ability of larvae to chemically recognize conspecific cues was altered. Our study highlights that recruitment potential on coral reefs may decrease due to anthropogenic stressors. If so, populations of fishes and crustaceans will continue their rapid decline; larval recruitment will not replace and sustain the adult populations on degraded reefs. [less ▲]

A process has been developed to enable the large scale production of pure TiO2 films deposited on 316L stainless steel in order to get an easy-to-clean surface. This large scale process requires an easy aqueous sol-gel procedure for the synthesis of the TiO2 sol. This synthesis has been simplified to facilitate the extrapolation towards an industrial scale. Results of TEM, photocatalytic properties, film hydrophilicity, and texture obtained with the simplified aqueous sol-gel synthesis (IsoP-TiO2 synthesis) show similar properties to those obtained with the standard aqueous sol-gel synthesis of TiO2 (HAc-TiO2 synthesis) developed previously. Only X-Ray Diffraction patterns showed differences, with the presence of anatase-brookite phases in IsoP-TiO2 synthesis while anatase phase only was observed in HAc-TiO2 synthesis. Both the aqueous sol-gel synthesis of pure TiO2 and the film deposition on steel by roll-coating have been successfully extrapolated to a larger scale. The photocatalytic activity and the hydrophilicity of the film were found to be unchanged when compared to films produced at a laboratory scale, thus validating the production of an efficient easy-to-clean material. Although some problems are still to be solved, this study is a hopeful first step in the development of a large scale process for self-cleaning steel production. [less ▲]
