Despite H. scabra’s wide distribution and status as one of the best candidates for sustaining the development of tropical sea cucumber aquaculture, very few data are available regarding the organic fraction it assimilates in practice. In this study we report experimental results where H. scabra’s diet was supplemented with various 15N-labelled organic fractions of sediment. We used juveniles weighing between 38- 88 mg at the beginning of the experiment (ca. 2 cm long and 30 days old). Their growth was measured over a four week period and their 15N composition recorded. The results showed that H. scabra juveniles assimilated all added organic components from both dissolved and particulate fractions of the sediment. Bacteria seem to be an important food source for juveniles, even more so than microphytobenthos (diatoms). [less ▲]

We report a method for achieving controlled dispersion of graphene oxide (GO) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) via the precipitation polymerization process in a water/ methanol mixture. GO acts as a surfactant and adsorbs on the interface between polymerized PMMA particles and solvent mixture. Scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the precipitate consists of polymer particles (<1 μm) surrounded by the GO sheets. Compression molding of the precipitate yields a polymer nanocomposite with the GO organized into a regularly spaced 3D network which percolates at 0.2 wt % GO. Simple thermal reduction of the GO sheets dispersed in PMMA at relatively low temperature (210 °C) achieved electrical conductivity higher than 10−2 S/m at 0.4 wt % of GO. Parallel dielectric and rheological characterization demonstrated that the thermal reduction is a quite fast process without significant degradation of the polymer. The study should open up new opportunities in the design of GO-based polymer nanocomposites. [less ▲]

We report the seasonal and vertical variations of dimethylsulphide (DMS) and its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in fast ice at Cape Evans, McMurdo Sound (Antarctica) during the spring-summer transition in 2011 and winter-spring transition in 2012. We compare the variations of DMS,P observed to the seasonal evolution of the ice algal biomass and of the physical properties of the ice cover, with emphasis on the ice texture and brine dynamics. Isolated DMS and DMSP maxima were found during both seasonal episodes in interior ice and corresponded to the occurrence of platelet crystals in the ice texture. We show that platelet crystals formation corresponded in time and depth to the incorporation of dinoflagellates (strong DMSP producers) in the ice cover. We also show that platelet crystals could modify the environmental stresses on algal cells and perturb the vertical redistribution of DMS,P concentrations. We show that during the winter-spring transition in 2012, the DMS,P profiles were strongly influenced by the development and decline of a diatom dominated bloom in the bottom ice, with DMSP variations remarkably following chl a variations. During the spring-summer transition in 2011, the increase in brine volume fraction (influencing ice permeability) on warming was shown to trigger (1) an important release of DMS to the under-ice water through brine convection (2) a vertical redistribution of DMSP across the ice [less ▲]

All the history books on the Middle Ages mention the famous « Charter of Huy from 1066 », the oldest surviving example of a freedoms charter north of the Alps. In granting this freedoms charter to the citizens of Huy, Théoduin, the Bishop of Liège, (1048- 1075) obtained in exchange the financial resources to achieve his objectives: the rebuilding of Huy-sur-Meuse and its collegiale church, which had been destroyed and ruined in 1053 by the count of Flanders. At the same time, the prelate was readying his own sepulture. On August 1066, the grandiose inauguration ceremonies were held in the new church. The eulogy of this monument of Huy De constructione – de consecratione ecclesiae Hoyensis is missing, but the interdisciplinary approach makes it possible today to reconsider the matter: history, hagiography, architecture, art, liturgy and the sacred spatialization. Mineral assemblage, trace element content and Nd and Pb isotope signatures were analysed on the fine fraction (<20 mm) of sedimentary records from the Northern Mendeleev Ridge in the Central Arctic Ocean. Our aimwas to identify the detrital particle provenance and to interpret the changes over the past w250 ka in the relative contribution of the different source-areas in relation to paleoenvironmental conditions. The clay mineral assemblage and the Nd and Pb isotope signatures depict systematic changes over the Late Quaternary. The bulk mineralogy exhibits increases in the relative contribution of carbonate minerals vs. silicates in interglacial/deglacial intervals. In glacial intervals, the mineral assemblage of the <20 mm fraction is characterised by an enrichment in kaolinite, counterbalanced by a decrease in illite. The Nd and Pb isotope signatures of <20 mm fraction are interpreted using a three end-member mixing model, involving crustal supplies from North America and Canada, from the Siberian margin and some from volcanic material. A compilation of geochemical signatures of geological terraines surrounding the Arctic Ocean allowed each end-member to be assigned a representative signature, averaging the signal of the eroded terraines. The Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) of the MacKenzie River represents an average signature of the sedimentary supplies delivered from the North American platform and Canadian margin. The SPM of the Lena River reflects the mean sedimentary signature of the Siberian platform. The Okhotsh-Chukotka province from the Eastern border of Siberia is identified as the most probable volcanic source. Late Quaternary evolution of the estimated relative contribution of the three end-members confirms that the sediment provenances in the Central Arctic Ocean remain close to the current conditions during past interglacials/deglacials MIS1e3, MIS5/TII and MIS7/TIII. In contrast, glacial conditions (MIS4 and MIS6) record minimum supplies from the American margin, associated with increased volcanic contribution, to the Mendeleev Ridge core location suggesting a different sea-ice circulation associated with a low sea-level and reduced shelf area. Super-Earths transiting nearby bright stars are key objects that simultaneously allow for accurate measurements of both their mass and radius, providing essential constraints on their internal composition. We present here the confirmation, based on Spitzer transit observations, that the super-Earth HD 97658 b transits its host star. HD 97658 is a low-mass ($M_*=0.77\pm0.05\,M_{\odot}$) K1 dwarf, as determined from the Hipparcos parallax and stellar evolution modeling. To constrain the planet parameters, we carry out Bayesian global analyses of Keck-HIRES radial velocities, and MOST and Spitzer photometry. HD 97658 b is a massive ($M_P=7.55^{+0.83}_{-0.79} M_{\oplus}$) and large ($R_{P} = 2.247^{+0.098}_{-0.095} R_{\oplus}$ at 4.5 $\mu$m) super-Earth. We investigate the possible internal compositions for HD 97658 b. Our results indicate a large rocky component, by at least 60% by mass, and very little H-He components, at most 2% by mass. We also discuss how future asteroseismic observations can improve the knowledge of the HD 97658 system, in particular by constraining its age. Orbiting a bright host star, HD 97658 b will be a key target for coming space missions TESS, CHEOPS, PLATO, and also JWST, to characterize thoroughly its structure and atmosphere. [less ▲]

Although mobility management by employers is an increasingly common practice, literature is scarce on the real impact of the applied measures. In this perspective, the objective of this paper is to assess the impact on car use of the measures adopted by employers located in Wallonia. In order to achieve this objective, the article develops simulations that put forward the impact of the measures based on their interrelations with other modal choice factors. Our assessment leads to the conclusion that measures promoting public transport and car-pooling can reduce solo car driving between 7,2 % and 8,4 %. In contrast to our assumption, measures promoting public transport are less effective in central areas than in urban outskirts. Regarding measures promoting the use of bicycle, the findings suggest that the modal shift occurs from other modes rather than from car use. [less ▲]

Lignin is a co-product from the biorefinery and paper industry. Its non-energetic valorization remains a field of extensive R&D developments. In this perspective, this study is undertaken to evaluate the radical scavenging ability of some herbaceous lignins. These lignins, extracted from Miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus) or Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum L.), are selected as benchmarks for this study as a function of their chemical structure and average molecular weight. These technical lignins, side-products in the bioethanol production process, are found to display a moderate antioxidant activity as evaluated by the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) free radical scavenging test system. A correlation between the radical scavenging properties and the molecular features is proposed and discussed. Infrared spectroscopy is evaluated as a straightforward qualitative prediction tool for the radical scavenging capacity. [less ▲]
