The lack of consideration for Ecosystem Services (ES) values in current decision-making is recognised as one of the main reasons leading to an intense competition and arguably unsustainable use of well-located available land. In this paper, we present a framework for the Valuation Of Terrestrial Ecosystem Services (VOTES), aiming at structuring a methodology that is applicable for valuing ES in a given area through a set of indicators that are both meaningful for local actors and scientifically constructed. Examples from a case study area in central Belgium are used to illustrate the methodology: a stepwise procedure starting with the valuation of ES at present. The valuation of the social, biophysical and economic dimensions of ES are based on current land-use patterns. Subsequently, scenarios of land-use change are used to explore potential losses (and/or gains) of ES in the future of the study area. With the VOTES framework, we aim at [1] incorporating stakeholders inputs to widen the valuation process and increase trust in policy-oriented approach; [2] integrating valuation of ES with a sustainable development stance accounting for land-use change; and [3] developing suggestions to policy-makers for integrating ES monitoring in policy developments. Vitamin D (VTD) treatment is recommended in patients presenting different causes of diseases. To treat these patients, physicians rely on the different available pharmaceutical forms present in their country. Unfortunately, even in a given country, there is no consensus on the best way to treat the patients. In Belgium, VTD is mostly prescribed as ampoules containing 25,000 IU of VTD. In this randomised controlled study, we evaluated whether four therapeutic schemes using multiples of 25,000 IU of VTD according to basal vitamin D concentration were able to increase or maintain the 25(OH)D serum level above 30 ng/mL. We randomized 175 subjects who received the drug () or placebo (). Total duration of the study was 12 weeks. Doses ranged from 4167 to 1667 IU/day. Blood sampling was performed at baseline and each 4 visits. In the treated (placebo) subjects, mean 25(OH)D serum concentration was 18.7 (19.1) ng/mL at baseline and 31.5 (20.7) ng/mL at w-12. At the end of the study, 57.1% of the subjects treated with VTD presented 25(OH)D serum concentration ≥30 ng/mL, whereas 94.3% were ≥20 ng/mL. In conclusion, the doses administered were safe and increased or maintained the 25(OH)D concentration ≥20 ng/mL. However, concentrations ≥30 ng/mL were only achieved in 57.1% of the subjects. Polycrystalline materials, with nanosized grains (<100 nm), exhibit superior strength exceeding those of their coarse-grained counterparts. With such small grains, the deformation mechanisms taking place at grain boundaries (GBs) become dominant compared to the intragranular crystal plasticity. Recent studies have revealed that the deformation mechanisms are influenced by the GB network. For instance, a high yield stress in nanostructured metals can be obtained by choosing the relevant grain boundary character distribution (GBCD). In this paper we present an original numerical multiscale approach to predict the mechanical behavior of nanostructured metals according to their GBCD composed of either high angle (HA) GBs (HAB) or low angle (LA) GBs (LAB). Molecular simulations using the quasicontinuum method (QC) are performed to obtain the mechanical response at the nanoscale of GB undergoing simple shear (GB sliding behavior) and tensile loads (GB opening behavior). To simulate the grain behavior, a mechanical model of dislocation motions through a forest dislocation is calibrated using a nanoindentation simulation performed with QC. These QC results are then used in a finite element code (direct numerical simulation-DNS) as a GB constitutive model and as a grain constitutive model. This two-scale framework does not suffer from length scale limitations conventionally encountered when considering the two scales separately. [less ▲]

Nowadays, microorganisms are more and more often used as biocontrol agents for crop protection against diseases. Among them, bacteria of Bacillus and Paenibacillus genders are already used as commercial biocontrol agents. Their mode of action is supposed to be related to their production of antibiotics, such as cyclic lipopeptides, which exhibit great antimicrobial activities. We chose to work with a Paenibacillus polymyxa strain (Pp56) very resistant to various microorganisms. The bacteria were grown simultaneously with Fusarium oxysporum and we applied matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (MALDI-FTICR) mass spectrometry to identify the antibiotics compounds present in the fungus growth inhibition area. We, therefore, identified fusaricidins A, B, and C and numerous members of the LI-F antibiotics family. MALDIFTICR mass spectrometry imaging was then used to follow the diffusion of lipopeptides involved in the inhibitory activity over time. We analyzed the molecular content of the inhibitory area at different Pp56 and Fusarium incubation durations and concluded that some lipopeptides such as fusaricidin B and a mixture of LI-F05b/06b/08a were mainly involved in the defense mechanism of Pp56. Our study confirms that MALDI imaging may be a powerful tool to quickly determine which molecular species is involved in an antagonism with another microorganism, avoiding time-consuming steps of extraction, purification, and activity tests, which are still commonly used in microbiology. The French Society of Clinical Biochemistry conducted this study to compare the accuracy and performances of the best creatinine enzymatic assays and the compensated Jaffe methods from the same manufacturers. Creatinine was measured in 3 serum pools with creatinine levels of 35.9 ± 0.9 μmol/L, 74.4 ± 1.4 μmol/L, and 97.9 ± 1.7 μmol/L (IDMS determination). The performances of the assays (total error that includes the contribution of bias and imprecision) were evaluated using Monte-Carlo simulations and compared against desirable NKDEP criteria. The enzymatic assays always fell within the desirable total Error of 7.6%. By contrast, this requirement was never obtained for the compensated Jaffe methods at the critical level of 74.4 ± 1.4 μmol/L. Only the compensated Jaffe creatinine on Olympus analyzer reached this specification at 35.9 ± 0.9 and 97.9 ± 1.7 μmol/L levels. This study demonstrates that, despite substantial improvement regarding traceability to the IDMS reference method and precision, compensated Jaffe creatinine methods, by contrast to enzymatic ones, do not reach the desirable specifications of NKDEP at normal levels of creatinine. Recent technology reviews have identified the need for objective assessments of aircraft engine health management (EHM) technologies. To help address this issue, a publicly available gas path diagnostic benchmarking problem has been created and made publicly available. This software tool, referred to as the Propulsion Diagnostic Method Evaluation Strategy (ProDiMES), has been constructed based on feedback provided by individuals within the aircraft EHM community. It provides a standard benchmarking problem enabling users to develop, evaluate and compare diagnostic methods. This paper will present an overview of ProDiMES along with a description of four gas path diagnostic methods developed and applied to the problem. These methods, which include analytical and empirical diagnostic techniques, will be described and associated blind test case metric results will be presented and compared. Lessons learned along with recommendations for improving the public benchmarking processes will also be presented and discussed. [less ▲]

Over the course of last two decades, Mexico’s policies towards its population abroad has moved from a situation characterized by a general lack of interest to being one of the most active state in this field. The recent development of dual national and external voting policies as well as the creation of a dedicated government agency and of a consultative body all epitomize the radical change through which Mexico has gone. In this chapter, I argue that the transformation of Mexico’s attitude towards its emigrants is strongly connected to the evolution of its political regime characterized by a transition towards democracy, a strong desire to take part actively in the global economy and the increasing interest of regional actors in migration issues. Focusing on the issue of external voting, the chapter concludes by discussing the evolution of the power relations between the emigrant community and the Mexican state. [less ▲]
