In recent years, inclusive design (a.k.a. universal design or design for all) is one of the developed approaches which aim to consider the diverse human abilities and conditions in the design process. As defined by the European Institute for Design and Disability (EIDD) ‘design for all’ is designing for diversity, social inclusion and equality. Considering the social and demographic changes in the 21st century, which include an international movement towards social inclusion and more specifically the rights of disabled people, an inclusive approach is turning into a necessity for today’s diverse and ageing society. In the case of architectural and urban heritage, the disabled people or in better words those with diverse sensory, mental or mobility abilities who differ from the general public, have the right to experience, interact with, and engage with heritage and its values. As part of an extensive interdisciplinary research on inclusive approaches to built heritage values, which connects the fields of architecture, history, conservation, inclusive design, and digital humanities, this paper investigates the potentials of incorporating digital tools and techniques in the different aspects of this research. The extensive study involves communication between researchers, relevant professional experts, and the historic built environment with the target community of disabled people and in this paper, the digital means to facilitate these interactions have been studied. As a step towards answering the question ‘what are suitable methods and tools for facilitating and acquiring insight into diversely abled people’s engagement with and understanding of architectural heritage and its values?’, it more specifically focuses on the interaction of the disabled people with the historic architecture and urban spaces. Additionally, in a more general approach, by linking the fields of digital humanities and architectural research, the existing tools for the different stages of research ranging from data collection and storage, data analysis, and dissemination are explored. By conducting and elaborating relevant research examples, this study shows how incorporating digital tools and techniques derived from Digital Humanities - such as retrieving data through APIs, textual analysis, creating and querying databases, and data visualization - can facilitate research in the field of architecture and built heritage. Moreover, in studying the relation between disability and the historic built environment, it indicates that acquiring knowledge on the potentials in practical digital tools for disabled people’s interaction with the built heritage, can have a significant impact on the research approach and findings. As for an inclusive approach to built heritage, the disabled people can be taken into account with their prospective extended digital abilities. Hence in today’s digital world, integrating the digital tools and technologies in architectural heritage research is not only a necessary practical mean for conducting research, but can also impact the theoretical approach, allowing to carry out extensive and innovative research in an efficient manner. This poster presents the identified obstacles, needs and selected solution for the study of the medieval castle of Franchimont, located in the province of Liège (Belgium). After taking into account the requirements from all the disciplines at work as well as the problems that would have to be tackled, the creation of a 3D point cloud was decided. This solution would be able to deal with the characteristics and needs of a research involving building archaeology and related fields. The decision was made in order to manage all of the available data and to provide a common working tool for every involved cultural heritage actor. [less ▲]

While virtual copies of the real world tend to be created faster than ever through point clouds and derivatives, their working proficiency by all professionals’ demands adapted tools to facilitate knowledge dissemination. Digital investigations are changing the way cultural heritage researchers, archaeologists, and curators work and collaborate to progressively aggregate expertise through one common platform. In this paper, we present a web application in a WebGL framework accessible on any HTML5-compatible browser. It allows real time point cloud exploration of the mosaics in the Oratory of Germigny-des-Prés, and emphasises the ease of use as well as performances. Our reasoning engine is constructed over a semantically rich point cloud data structure, where metadata has been injected a priori. We developed a tool that directly allows semantic extraction and visualisation of pertinent information for the end users. It leads to efficient communication between actors by proposing optimal 3D viewpoints as a basis on which interactions can grow. [less ▲]

A l’instar de la révolution induite par la disponibilité du temps pour chaque individu de la société, la possibilité de connaître sa position géographique conduit à de nouveaux challenges. Actuellement, il est possible de se géolocaliser à n’importe quel endroit du globe. Connaître sa position à l’intérieur d'un bâtiment, d'un centre commercial, voire au sein même d’un rayonnage n’est plus une utopie. Cette disponibilité de géolocalisation conduit, d’une part, à des changements importants dans la manière d’appréhender l’espace et, d’autre part, à la création de nouveaux services basés sur la connaissance de sa position en temps réel. Au cours de cette conférence, nous aborderons les principes et systèmes permettant de collecter et de traiter cette information de position acquise en temps réel. Nous verrons ensuite quelques exemples d’utilisations de cette masse d’informations collectées, notamment via l’utilisation de réseaux sociaux. L’exposé proposera volontairement une vision pragmatique de la question de la géolocalisation de la société sans se positionner, a priori, sur ses bienfaits ou ses dérives. [less ▲]

3D point clouds describe urban shape at different scales, precisions and resolutions depending on the underlying sensors and acquisition methodology. These factors influence the quality of the data, as well as its representativity. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale workflow to obtain a better description of the captured environment through a multi-scale representative point cloud, presenting an unlimited depth and multisensory data fusion. Our method is shown over a ''smart point cloud'' data structure and based on data fusion principles retaining higher description and precision on overlapping areas. The concept is illustrated through a use case on the castle of Jehay (Belgium), where aerial LiDAR data, terrestrial laser scanner point cloud and photogrammetrybased reconstruction are combined to obtain a multi-scale data structure. This paper deals with the viewpoint management in 3D environments considering an allocentric environment. The recent advances in computer sciences and the growing number of affordable remote sensors lead to impressive improvements in the 3D visualisation. Despite some research relating to the analysis of visual variables used in 3D environments, we notice that it lacks a real standardisation of 3D representation rules. In this paper we study the “viewpoint” as being the first considered parameter for a normalised visualisation of 3D data. Unlike in a 2D environment, the viewing direction is not only fixed in a top down direction in 3D. A non-optimal camera location means a poor 3D representation in terms of relayed information. Based on this statement we propose a model based on the analysis of the computational display pixels that determines a viewpoint maximising the relayed information according to one kind of query. We developed an OpenGL prototype working on screen pixels that allows to determine the optimal camera location based on a screen pixels colour algorithm. The viewpoint management constitutes a first step towards a normalised 3D geovisualisation. [less ▲]

Dealing with coloured point cloud acquired from terrestrial laser scanner, this paper identifies remaining challenges for a new data structure: the smart point cloud. This concept arises with the statement that massive and discretized spatial information from active remote sensing technology is often underused due to data mining limitations. The generalisation of point cloud data associated with the heterogeneity and temporality of such datasets is the main issue regarding structure, segmentation, classification, and interaction for an immediate understanding. We propose to use both point cloud properties and human knowledge through machine learning to rapidly extract pertinent information, using user-centered information (smart data) rather than raw data. A review of feature detection, machine learning frameworks and database systems indexed both for mining queries and data visualisation is studied. Based on existing approaches, we propose a new 3-block flexible framework around device expertise, analytic expertise and domain base reflexion. This contribution serves as the first step for the realisation of a comprehensive smart point cloud data structure [less ▲]

Les techniques permettant l’acquisition 3D du patrimoine bâti sont maintenant assez mures et démocratiques pour être utilisées à grande échelle. De plus en plus d’édifices font l’objet d’une sauvegarde numérique sous la forme de nuages de points colorés. Il reste néanmoins de nombreux défis à relever notamment pour : harmoniser les pratiques d’acquisition en terme de qualité et de précision, assurer l’interopérabilité entre les jeux de données ; exploiter pleinement l’information ponctuelle collectée ; et proposer une visualisation adéquate de ces grands jeux de données. Dans le cadre des développements réalisés à l’Unité de Géomatique de l’ULg, nous travaillons à la mise au point de systèmes d’informations permettant d’assurer un lien entre les informations sémantiques issues des applications archéologiques, architecturales, d’histoire de l’art avec les modèles 3D réalisés. La mise en place de ces systèmes d’informations passe par plusieurs étapes de recherche relatives à la sectorisation automatique, les structures de données, la définitions d’ontologies thématiques et finalement les règles sémiologiques de représentations dans un environnement virtuel 3D. Au cours de cette présentation, nous proposons de parcourir trois projets de recherche en cours au sein de l’Unité afin l’illustrer nos propos. Nous présenterons plus particulièrement le cas de la cathédrale Saint-Paul de Liège. [less ▲]

This work presents a new approach that aims to characterize the spatio-temporal relationships that exist between geographical objects that are absent or non-existent at the moment of analysis. First, we would like to propose a formal analysis of the spatio-temporal states of presence and existence of a geographical object. We will then use a combination of these states in order to define a set of life and motion configurations. The model developed then serves as a formal basis for the realization of a series of spatio-temporal queries based on an analysis of patterns in the succession of spatio-temporal states. The entire approach is then demonstrated by using the example of the organization of a scientific conference by defining the spatio-temporal relationships between the conference participants. The research methodology is finally compared with a real dataset taken from a geolocalized social network to show the efficiency of this type of management. [less ▲]

Les nouvelles techniques LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) et photogrammétriques permettent d’acquérir rapidement un volume important de données 3D. Le terme LiDAR désigne tout instrument de mesure (terrestre, aéroporté) basé sur l’analyse des propriétés d’un faisceau renvoyé vers un émetteur (Poux et al. 2014). Conscient de l’énorme potentiel de ces techniques, l’Unité de Géomatique de l’Université de Liège a réalisé la numérisation de la Cathédrale Saint‐Paul de Liège. Ce projet a été initié via une collaboration avec le Matthieu Piavaux (FUNDP) et financée par le FNRS. Au‐delà des aspects de conservation et d’analyse du bâti, cette numérisation nous a permis de mettre en lumière les principes et limitations de la technique même d’acquisition de données 3D via LiDAR ainsi que ses limitations tant matérielles (sur terrain) que logicielles (traitement des données). Le jeu de donnée obtenu de la numérisation sert également de base fondamentale à un ensemble de projets de recherches (notamment via la réalisation de thèses de doctorats) visant à la segmentation automatique de nuages de points, de reconstruction d’objets tridimensionnelles, d’analyse de qualité d’ajustements. Par la suite, nous détaillons la méthodologie utilisée pour l’acquisition du nuage de points 3D ainsi que les différents principes de calage de nuages. Le chapitre suivant sera consacré à la présentation de résultats ainsi que de premiers développements en termes de segmentation automatique. Finalement, nous dresserons quelques perspectives de représentations. [less ▲]

Activity recommendation systems aims at providing relevant information depending on targeted users' groups. For instance in a city, it makes sense to differentiate local residents from tourists. This research investigates to what extent the anonymized data collected from social networks can be used as a basis for making activity recommendations associated with local residents versus tourists when visiting a public place, such as a museum or gallery. Using rules based on the spatial, temporal and semantics of visited places, we are able to infer if a user is likely to be local or a tourist, based on anonymous sample Foursquare data and place-based semantics retrieved using Google Places API. Using semantics of visited places, it becomes possible to infer additional information about a user based on their movements over space and time. Depending on the kind and frequency of visited places, inferences about the aim of a visit to a location are possible. This analysis could provide information to users in the form of recommendations based on their movements while travelling around an area. This study has been performed using Foursquare check-ins for visitors to the Art Institute of Chicago between March 2010 and January 2011. [less ▲]
