Anis (Pimpinella anisum L.) seeds obtained from two geographic origins Tunisia (TAS) and Egypte (EAS) were studied regarding their biochemical composition and the antioxidant potential of their extracts. The results showed that the highest value of oil was detected with TAS compared to that of EAS ones. Ten (10) fatty acids were identified for the two locations and petroselinic acid was the most prevalent in oil seeds and interestingly, TAS displayed a significantly higher level of this acid than EAS. Besides, TAS exhibited slightly higher essential oil yield than the Egyptian variety and that trans-anethole was the dominant for the two provenances. In both accessions, the highest total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin content was obtained with ethyl acetate fraction. Therefore, TAS exhibited higher chelating and reducing powers than EAS which may be due to a slightly different phenolic composition between the two accession seed extracts. The phenolic compositions of TAS and EAS revealed that ethyl acetate extracts showed higher proportions of naringin, chlorogenic acid and rosmarinic acid. However, ethanol extracts were richer in larcitrin, rosmarinic acid and cirsimartin. The overall results revealed that aniseeds might constitute a novel source of natural antioxidants and could be used as food additive. [less ▲]

Recently, medicinal and aromatic plants have received much attention in several fields such agroalimentary, perfumes, pharmaceutical industries and natural cosmetic products. The consumption of herbal medicines is widespread and is continuously increasing worldwide. Although, secondary metabolites in the medicinal and aromatic plants were fundamentally produced by genetic processing but, their biosynthesis is strongly influenced by environmental factors. Salinity is one of the major factors that affect essential oil biosynthesis and secretion (Heuer et al. 2002). In Tunisia, salt-affected soils cover about 10% of the total area of the country. Salinity led to biochemical disorders and can change plant behaviour regarding the biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites. Among all the secondary metabolites synthesized by plants, phenolic compounds are some of the most widespread. In this context, this research evaluated the effect of salinity on total and individual polyphenols contents as well as the antioxidant activities of fennel (Foeniculum vulgarae Mill.) seeds of two geographic origins, Tunisia (TFS) and Egypt (EFS). This plant is one of the most common aromatics in the Mediterranean kitchen. Plants were treated with different concentrations of NaCl treatment: 0, 50, and 75 mmoL. Plant growth was significantly reduced with the severity of saline treatment. This also caused important reductions in the seed yield and yield components. Besides, total polyphenol content was higher in treated seeds, and salinity improved the amount of individual phenolic compounds. Moreover, antioxidant activities of the extracts were determined by four different test systems, namely 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, β-carotene/linoleic acid chelating, and reducing power assays. The highest antioxidant activities were reveled in severe stressed plants for both TFS and EFS. In this case, fennel seeds produced under saline conditions may function as a potential source of antioxidant compounds, which could support the utilization of this plant in a large field of applications such as food industry. Let G be a simple graph of n vertices. We consider the problem ISil of deciding whether there exists an induced subtree with exactly i ≤ n vertices and l leaves in G. We also study the associated optimization problem, that consists in computing the maximal number of leaves, denoted by L_G(i), realized by an induced subtree with i vertices, for 2 ≤ i ≤ n. We compute the values of the map L_G for some classical families of graphs and in particular for the d-dimensional hypercubic graphs Q_d , d ≤ 6. Then we prove that the ISil problem is in general NP-complete. We also describe a nontrivial branch and bound algorithm that computes the function L_G for any simple graph G. In the special case where G is a tree, we provide a O(δn^3) time and O(n^2) space algorithm, where δ is the maximum degree of G. Finally, we exhibit a bijection between the set of discrete derivative of the sequences L_G (i) where G is caterpillar, and the set of prefix normal words. [less ▲]

Organisms with complex life cycles are characterized by a metamorphosis that allows for a major habitat shift and the exploitation of alternative resources. However, metamorphosis can be bypassed in some species through a process called paedomorphosis, resulting in the retention of larval traits at the adult stage and is considered important at both micro- and macroevolutionary scales. In facultatively paedomorphic populations of newts, some individuals retain gills and a fully aquatic life at the adult stage (paedomorphs), while others undergo complete metamorphosis (metamorphs), allowing for a terrestrial life-stage. Because facultative paedomorphosis affects trophic structures and feeding mechanism of newts, one hypothesis is that it may be maintained as a trophic polymorphism, with the advantage to lessen intraspecific competition during the shared aquatic life-stage. Here, we tested this hypothesis combining stomach content data with stable isotope techniques, using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, in facultatively paedomorphic alpine newts Ichthyosaura alpestris. Both stomach content and stable isotope analyses showed that paedomorphs had smaller trophic niches and were more reliant on pelagic resources, while metamorphs relied more on littoral resources, corresponding to a polyphenism along the littoral-pelagic axis and the extension of the population's trophic niche to otherwise ‘underused’ pelagic resources by paedomorphs. Interestingly, stable isotopes revealed that the trophic polyphenism was less marked in males than in females and potentially linked to sexual activity. Although paedomorphosis and metamorphosis are primarily seen as results of tradeoffs between the advantages of using aquatic versus terrestrial habitats, this study provides evidence that additional forces, such as intraspecific trophic niche differences between morphs and trophic niche expansion, may play an important role in the persistence of this dimorphism in heterogeneous environments. Moreover, the different patterns found in males and females show the importance of considering sex to understand the evolutionary ecology of trophic polymorphisms. [less ▲]

Dans cette contribution, nous nous penchons sur la possibilité de créer une dynamique interactive entre intervention sur le terrain et recherche scientifique dans le domaine de la formation. Les terrains d’application se situent tous ici dans le domaine de la santé. Nous présentons quatre configurations d’une telle complémentarité. Chacune d’entre elles représente une articulation différente entre le but de développement des participants et celui de production de savoirs scientifiques. Dans le premier cas, une démarche de recherche est entreprise en amont de la conception d’une formation. La deuxième configuration illustre une recherche scientifique appliquée à un dispositif d’intervention existant et qui vient en retour en modifier la logique. Pour la troisième, il s’agit d’une articulation continue entre recherche et formation s’alimentant mutuellement dans une logique de recherche-action. Enfin, la quatrième partie se penche sur trois dispositifs pédagogiques dont la caractéristique est de combiner des intentions formatives avec des préoccupations de recherche [less ▲]

Dans un contexte de déforestation massive dans les zones rurales adjacentes aux grandes métropoles de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC), zones d’approvisionnement en bois-énergie, l’identification de la place et du rôle que prend l’arbre dans les villages constituent un préalable à tous plan de restauration forestière. Ce chapitre porte sur les connaissances taxonomiques, les usages et la distribution des espèces arborées indigènes au sein de quatre villages en zone rurale adjacente à la ville de Lubumbashi, chef-lieu de la province du Katanga en RDC. Un total de 49 espèces indigènes de la forêt claire a été identifié par les 51 familles interrogées. Les utilisations sont classées en 6 catégories. Neuf espèces sont connues par plus de 50% des familles et correspondent aux espèces les plus utilisées pour l’alimentation via la consommation de leurs fruits et pour la confection d’outils. Les espèces citées par les personnes interrogées ne sont pas présentes dans le système agricole. La densité d’arbre à l’hectare au sein des champs est faible. Les espèces présentes sont des espèces résistantes aux facteurs de dégradation. Cette étude a montré que la connaissance taxonomique est limitée aux espèces les plus utilisées. Il n’y a pas de gestion intégrée de l’arbre au sein du système agricole dans la zone rurale adjacente à la ville de Lubumbashi. [less ▲]

Microgravity, confinement, isolation, and immobilization are just some of the features astronauts have to cope with during space missions. Consequently, long-duration space travel can have detrimental effects on human physiology. Although research has focused on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system in particular, the exact impact of spaceflight on the human central nervous system remains to be determined. Previous studies have reported psychological problems, cephalic fluid shifts, neurovestibular problems, and cognitive alterations, but there is paucity in the knowledge of the underlying neural substrates. Previous space analogue studies and preliminary spaceflight studies have shown an involvement of the cerebellum, cortical sensorimotor, and somatosensory areas and the vestibular pathways. Extending this knowledge is crucial, especially in view of long-duration interplanetary missions (e.g., Mars missions) and space tourism. In addition, the acquired insight could be relevant for vestibular patients, patients with neurodegenerative disorders, as well as the elderly population, coping with multisensory deficit syndromes, immobilization, and inactivity. This paper deals with the derivation of a simplified model of a distribution network hosting dispersed photovoltaic units. The model is aimed at short-term dynamic simulations of a transmission grid in response to large disturbances. In a first step, a generic dynamic model of a photovoltaic unit is proposed, focusing on its interactions with the grid, in particular the controls triggered by voltage disturbances. The model takes into account various present and near-future grid codes. In a second step, a dynamic equivalent is derived accounting for the distribution network, the dispersed photovoltaic units, as well as static and dynamic (motor) loads. This equivalent is of the “grey-box” type and its parameters are tuned in the least-square sense to match the dynamic response of the original, unreduced system. Simulation results are reported on a detailed 913-bus distribution system subject to faults at transmission level. [less ▲]

Les troubles du sommeil sont fréquents chez l’enfant et leurs origines sont diverses. Ces troubles ont leur ancrage dans le développement neurophysiologique et psychoaffectif de l’enfant. Les enfants souffrant de troubles du spectre autistique présentent un déficit de sommeil, qui peut durer jusqu’à l’adolescence. Les troubles du spectre autistique comportent des comorbidités multiples, dont des altérations du sommeil. Ils sont importants à caractériser dans cette population, car ils peuvent avoir un impact négatif sur les comportements diurnes. Par ailleurs, ils entrainent souvent des difficultés au sein de la famille. La prise en charge doit avant tout prendre en compte le contexte environnemental afin d’améliorer les habitudes et l’hygiène du sommeil. Des questionnaires ainsi que des agendas de sommeil ont été remplis par des parents afin de démontrer l’importance d’une évaluation et d’une prise en compte des troubles du sommeil chez les enfants souffrant d’autisme en consultation pédopsychiatrique. La conservation de la biodiversité est devenue un challenge social, politique et économique au niveau mondial. Etant donné que certaines régions du monde sont fortement soumises à l’anthropisation et à ses impacts, il est indispensable de modifier notre perception et notre réflexion en ce qui concerne la conservation de la biodiversité et la restauration écologique. Ce chapitre explore les possibilités existantes et les adapte pour associer la conservation des espèces végétales d’intérêt avec la phytoremédiation des sols pollués. Cette nouvelle stratégie semble encourageante pour conserver le lien entre la société et l’environnement. En utilisant la diversité végétale locale, il est possible de créer de nouvelles communautés végétales afin de réhabiliter des sols pollués par les éléments traces métalliques. Le cas de la ville de Lubumbashi et de la flore de l’Arc Cuprifère Katangais en est un exemple marquant qui a été récemment testé avec succès. Cependant, d’autres études sur les métallophytes sont essentielles pour les utiliser de manière appropriée. [less ▲]
