[more ▼] This paper presents a method to compute accurate bounds on Jacobian determinants of high-order (curvilinear) triangular nite elements. This method can be used to guarantee that a curvilinear triangle is geometrically valid, i.e., that its Jacobian determinant is strictly positive everywhere in its reference domain. It also provides an e cient way to measure the quality the triangles. The key feature of the method is to expand the Jacobian determinant using a polynomial basis, built using B ezier functions, that has both properties of boundedness and positivity. Numerical results show the sharpness of our estimates. [more ▼] The present experiment aimed to investigate age differences in the neural correlates of familiarity and recollection, while keeping performance similar across age groups by varying task difficulty. Twenty young and twenty older adults performed an episodic memory task in an event-related fMRI design. At encoding, participants were presented with pictures, either once or twice. Then, they performed a recognition task, with a Remember/Know paradigm. A similar performance was observed for the two groups in the Easy condition for recollection and in the Hard condition for familiarity. Imaging data revealed the classic recollection-related and familiarity-related networks, common to young and older groups. In addition, we observed that some activity related to recollection (left frontal, left temporal, left parietal cortices and left parahippocampus) and familiarity (bilateral anterior cingulate, right frontal gyrus and left superior temporal gyrus) was reduced in older compared to young adults. However, for recollection processes only, older adults additionally recruited the right precuneus, possibly to successfully compensate for their difficulties, as suggested by a positive correlation between recollection and precuneus activity. To do that, we show how to reduce the complexity of setting up the polar of conv(PI ) from a quadratic number of integer hull computations to a linear number of integer hull computations. Furthermore, we present an algorithm that avoids computing all integer hulls. A polynomial running time is not guaranteed but computational results show that the algorithm runs quickly in practice. [more ▼] Performance-contingent compensation by means of stock options may induce risk taking in agents that is excessive from the point of view of the company or the shareholders. We test whether increasing shareholder control may be an effective checking mechanism to rein in such excessive risk taking. We thus tell one group of experimental CEOs that they may have to justify their decision making processes in front of their shareholders. This indeed reduces risk taking and increases the performance of the companies they manage. Implications are discussed. [more ▼] Recently, the European Union (EU) proposed a reform project for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). One of the proposed reforms consists in imposing to set aside 7% of arable land for biodiversity support purposes. About this proposal, a conference was hold in Gembloux, Belgium, on 9th November 2011. Such systems already exist in neighboring countries. French and Swiss systems were displayed in order to highlight their advantages and limits. Scientific arguments subtending such policies were presented. It was shown that creation of semi-natural elements in the agricultural matrix should be efficient to promote biodiversity. Both the quantity and the quality of these elements should be considered. Also, biodiversity is likely to provide services to agriculture, notably crop pollination and pest control. Currently, uncertainties remain on eligible areas to reach the 7% threshold. However, based on most probable scenarios, the current likely eligible areas cover only 4.3% of arable land in Wallonia. Less than 20% of Walloon farms already reach the 7% threshold proposed by the EU. If the European project is approved, it will therefore be of first importance to have a societal recognition toward farmers for their effort. To optimize positive effects of the policy on biodiversity, it is also imperative to make sure that a high biological quality is reached in the areas dedicated to biodiversity and to monitor this quality in the light of clearly defined objectives. Economical, societal and environmental issues should all be considered when applying this policy in order to improve agriculture sustainability and to stop biodiversity decline in agricultural landscapes. [more ▼] Background: Bromocresol green method (BCG) is routinely used in veterinary laboratories to measure albumin. A good agreement between BCG and electrophoresis (SPE) in healthy domestic animals is reported. However, in human medicine, at low albumin and high globulin concentrations, BCG also binds to α- and β-globulins fractions. Surprisingly, there is no recent literature evaluating the BCG method in diseased domestic animals. Objective: The purpose of the present study was therefore to compare the serum albumin values obtained by SPE and BCG in canine and equine patients. Methods: Albumin measured by BCG and SPE was compared in the serum from 30 canine and 30 equine patients. Results: Good correlation was found (Spearman´s rho rs = 0.91 in dogs and 0.84 in horses). However, Altman and Bland analysis of results showed a positive bias of BCG with SPE (3.41 g/l in horses and 0.41 g/l in dogs) that increased when only hypoalbuminemic patients were considered (4.17 g/l in horses and 1.31 g/l in dogs). Conclusion: Results confirm that, despite good correlation, BCG method tends to overestimate albumin, especially in hypoalbuminemic patients. This is particularly evident in horses. [more ▼] This paper presents a centralized control scheme to regulate distribution network voltages in the presence of high penetration of distributed generation. The approach is inspired of Model Predictive Control in order to compensate for modeling inaccuracies and measurement noise. The control actions, calculated from a multi-step optimization, are updated and corrected by real-time measurements. The proposed controller uses a linear model to predict the behavior of the system and the optimization is solved using quadratic programming. The proposed corrective control has been tested in a 11-kV distribution network including 75 nodes and hosting 22 distributed generating units.
