The B fields in OB stars (BOB) survey is an ESO large programme collecting spectropolarimetric observations for a large number of early-type stars in order to study the occurrence rate, properties, and ultimately the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars. As of July 2014, a total of 98 objects were observed over 20 nights with FORS2 and HARPSpol. Our preliminary results indicate that the fraction of magnetic OB stars with an organised, detectable field is low. This conclusion, now independently reached by two different surveys, has profound implications for any theoretical model attempting to explain the field formation in these objects. We discuss in this contribution some important issues addressed by our observations (e.g., the lower bound of the field strength) and the discovery of some remarkable objects. [less ▲]

Solvent degradation is one of the main operational drawbacks of post-combustion CO2 capture with amine solvents. Although the different degradation mechanisms have been largely studied in recent years, it is still impossible to predict the solvent losses and the emissions of degradation products that may occur in a CO2 capture plant depending on its size and on its operating conditions. In the present work, we experimentally study the degradation of MEA monoethanolamine) under accelerated conditions implying high temperature, continuous gas feed and vigorous agitation. A special focus is set on the oxidative degradation of MEA, which is studied in the absence of CO2. Based on the experimental results, we propose a kinetic model to describe both MEA oxidative and thermal degradation pathways. The degradation kinetics is then included into a global model of the CO2 capture process, enabling solvent losses and emissions of degradation products to be predicted as a function of the process operating conditions. The predicted MEA loss is in the same order of magnitude as reported in degradation measurements from pilot plants, although lower by a factor 3. This kind of model assessing solvent degradation could and should be used for the design of large-scale CO2 capture plants in order to simultaneously consider the energy consumption of the process and its environmental impact related to the emissions of degradation products and amine solvent. Further developments shall consider the effect of SOx, NOx and dissolved metals on MEA degradation. [less ▲]

We investigate the implications of venture capital (VC) investor type (government or private) on the operating efficiency of a sample of 515 Belgian portfolio firms up to 3 years after the investment. We find that the government VC-backed firms display significant reductions in productivity. No significant differences in efficiency are found in firms backed by private VC compared with their non-VC-backed peers. Finally, significant reductions in efficiency exist in targets of government VC compared to their non-VC-backed peers. [less ▲]

This paper addresses a new approach to formalize the spatiotemporal relationships between geographical objects that do not exist or that are not present at the time of the analysis. We propose first an analysis of the spatiotemporal states of existence and presence for a geographical object. Then, we combine the spatiotemporal states to define a comprehensive set of life and motion configuration. The proposed model serves as formal basis to perform spatiotemporal queries by retrieving selected patterns in the life and motion configurations. The research is applied to the organization of a scientific conference, in doing so we are able to define the relationships that exist between an event located in space and time and mobiles objects evolving within the space, i.e. the conference participants. This study examined time-based prospective memory (PM) in children and explored the possible involvement of metamemory knowledge and executive functions in the use of an appropriate time monitoring strategy depending on the ongoing task’s difficulty. Specifically, a sample of 72 typically developing children aged 4, 6, and 9 years old were given an original PM paradigm composed of both an ongoing procedural activity and a PM task. Half of the participants (expert group) were trained in the ongoing activity before the prospective test. As expected, results show that time monitoring had a positive effect on children’s PM performance. Furthermore, mediation analyses reveal that strategic time monitoring was predicted by metamemory knowledge in the expert group but only by executive functions in the novice group. Overall, these findings provide interesting avenues to explain how metamemory knowledge, strategy use, and executive functions interact to improve PM performance during childhood. [less ▲]

We examined the mechanisms involved in the development of the easily learned, easily remembered (ELER) heuristic in three groups of young children (4–5 years, 6–7 years, and 8–9 years). A trial-to-acquisition procedure was used to evaluate how much these children’s judgment of learning depended on the ELER heuristic. Moreover, a new experimental paradigm, composed of six phases—a pretest, four training phases, and a posttest—was employed to implicitly influence the validity of the ELER association that underlies this metacognitive rule. Results revealed that the ELER heuristic develops early (4–5 years), but its use is reduced after implicit training. Furthermore, executive monitoring was found to account for the smaller changes observed in older children (8–9 years) after training. From a developmental perspective, these findings present a coherent picture of children’s learning of metacognitive heuristics, wherein early automatic and implicit learning is later followed by effortful control. Voice problems can be triggered by both vocal misuse and overuse. While misuse is caused by inappropriate vocal actions, overuse results from greater vocal loading than the individual is able to recover from. Vocal load depends primarily on the quantity of phonation in terms of duration, fundamental frequency and sound pressure of the voice. Portable load quantification systems have been available for several years. These dosimeters allow the objective description of vocal behavior in real situations for a prolonged duration. They are primarily used by voice professionals – people who need their voices for their work – such as teachers and singers. Voice dosimetry makes it possible to identify risky vocal behaviors and situations promoting dysphonia, in an ecological context. The objective of research using these tools is to suggest guidelines for the prevention, evaluation and treatment of dysphonia, mainly in people who use their voices a lot. In addition, this research attempts to set standards for daily voice use for different groups of individuals. [less ▲]

Le photogramme est, au cinéma, la plus petite unité de prise de vue. Image fixe, unité élémentaire du film, le photogramme forme la cellule figée d’un mouvement qui se reconstitue sous l’effet d’un défilement réglé (24 photogrammes/seconde) par le dispositif technique du cinéma. Image paradoxale en ce qu’elle reste invisible au spectateur malgré sa force iconique, le photogramme trouve cependant, dans le flux qui le conduit insensiblement à la disparition, certaines zones de visibilité qui en révèlent le caractère à la fois fragile et intensif. Nous allons donc envisager certaines pratiques ou certains usages du photogramme cinématographique, tout en essayant de dégager, au départ de ces pratiques, les éléments d’une théorie du photogramme, que Roland Barthes et Sylvie Pierre appelaient déjà de leurs vœux. Des protos-photogrammes et de leur usage scientifique chez Muybridge et Marey, aux usages artistiques contemporains, en passant par des pratiques publicitaires, promotionnelles ou analytiques, nous allons voir que le photogramme reste un objet singulier. We consider a mixed integer set which generalizes two well-known sets: the single node fixed- charge network set and the single arc design set. Such set arises as a relaxation of feasible sets of general mixed integer problems such as lot-sizing and network design problems. We derive several families of valid inequalities that, in particular, generalize the arc resid- ual capacity inequalities and the flow cover inequalities. For the constant capacitated case we provide an extended compact formulation and give a partial description of the convex hull in the original space which is exact under a certain condition. By lifting some basic inequalities we provide some insight on the difficulty of obtaining such a full polyhedral description for the constant capacitated case. Preliminary computational results are presented. [less ▲]
