This cahier aims to identify and analyze the consequences of international migration movements on the school itineraries and aspirations of children who have been exposed to international migration between Mexico and the U. S. Some of these children are active actors of migratory flows because they moved from one country to another. Others are not active migrants; however, given the fact that they belong to divided families due to international migration, they are exposed to the impacts of their family members’ decisions. Consequently, two critical components of their migratory experiences will be the focus of our analysis. Firstly, we will analyze their school trajectory and secondly the family dispersion due to their migratory decisions. [less ▲]

Stiction is a major failure in microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices in which two contacting surfaces can remain stuck together because of the adhesive forces. Due to the difference between the surfaces roughness and the adhesive force range, the real contact areas are usually smaller than the apparent one, resulting in a scatter in the adhesive forces. Consequently, the stiction is an uncertain phenomenon. In this work, we develop a probabilistic model to predict the uncertainties of stiction due to the capillary forces acting on stiff materials. This model contains two levels: at the deterministic level, the model can predict the pull-out adhesive contact forces for a given surface topology; at the probabilistic level, the model generates independent identically distributed surfaces on which the deterministic solution can be applied to evaluate the uncertainties related to the stiction phenomenon. Objective: Based on the case study of Jeanne, the objective of this article is to study patterns of anorexic people’s specific being-in-the-world. We seek to identify the core vulnerability features of anorexic existence, beyond the dimension of feeding alone. The identification of a psychopathological structure will result in a better understanding of Jeanne’s clinical situation and will help to formulate psychotherapeutic and prophylactic recommendations. Method: A phenomenological and ethological approach allows us to see past the strictly medical symptoms (eating disorder). The evolutionary perspective highlights the adaptive dimension of this disorder (e.g., in extreme situations such as famine). Specifically, Demaret’s ethological hypothesis identifies altruism (feeding altruism and generalized altruism) as the core feature of anorexic conduct. Phenomenological reflection (phenomenological psychopathology and phenomenological philosophy) appears to complement the ethological approach. Phenomenology distinguishes two kinds of bodies: the Leib (emotional, subjective and experienced in the first person) and the Körper (devitalized, objective and experienced in the second person). Merleau-Ponty’s works highlight the difference between the touching body and the touched body. These proposals show the problematic of the other in body configuration. It is in precisely this connection that anorexic existence is specific. Sartre’s phenomenology and the lived-body-for-others is the final step of our reasoning to arrive at a configuration of intersubjectivity. Results: The analysis of Jeanne’s case, combined with ethological and phenomenological perspectives, demonstrates that the real psychopathological structure of anorexic subjectivity rests on specific interaction modes. The notions of altruism, lived-body-for-others, and intersubjectivity highlight an emotional existence including shame in the eyes of others, and especially an imbalance between self-preservation and care for others. Conclusions: All our thinking suggests that so-called “denial” is a psychological mechanism that should be reconsidered. Denial is not a mechanism of anorexic subjects alone, but is also a process encountered both in the patient’s family and in the therapeutic environment. Anorexic denial is based on anosognosia and the refusal to see one’s own thinness, while other people’s denial constitutes a widespread inability to perceive the altruism and intersubjective problematic on which the existence of an anorexic subject fundamentally depends. Fossils of Mesozoic vertebrates are rare in Scotland, particularly specimens of marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs. We describe a suite of ichthyosaur fossils from the Early to Middle Jurassic of Skye, which to our knowledge are the first ichthyosaurs from Scotland to be described and figured in detail. These fossils span approximately 30 million years, from the Sinemurian to the Bathonian, and indicate that ichthyosaurs were a major component of Scottish marine faunas during this time. The specimens include isolated teeth that could represent the most northerly known occurrences of the widespread Sinemurian species Ichthyosaurus communis, a characteristic component of the famous Lyme Regis faunas of England, suggesting that such faunas were also present in Scotland during the Early Jurassic. An associated humerus and vertebrae from Toarcian–Bajocian-aged deposits are named as a new genus and species of basal neoichthyosaurian, Dearcmhara shawcrossi. The taxonomic affinities of this taxon, which comes from a critical but poorly sampled interval in the fossil record, suggest that non-ophthalmosaurid neoichthyosaurians dominated European assemblages around the Early–Middle Jurassic boundary, and were later replaced by ophthalmosaurids, whose radiation likely took place outside Europe. Many of these specimens were collected by amateurs and donated to museum collections, a co-operative relationship essential to the preservation of Scotland’s fossil heritage. [less ▲]

Anatomical, systematic, and paleobiogeographical data on the Devonian antiarchs from Belgium are reviewed, updated and completed thanks to new data from the field and re-examination of paleontological collections. The material of Bothriolepis lohesti Leriche, 1931 is enhanced and the species better described. An undetermined species of Bothriolepis is recorded from the Famennian of Modave (Liège Province), one species of Asterolepis redescribed from the Givetian of Hingeon and another one described from the Givetian of Mazy (Namur Province). Grossilepis rikiki sp. nov. is recorded from the Famennian tetrapod-bearing locality of Strud (Namur Province) and from the Famennian of Moresnet (Liège Province). It is the first occurrence of Grossilepis after the Frasnian and on the central southern coast of the Euramerican continent. Its occurrence in the Famennian of Belgium may be the result of a late arrival from the Moscow Platform and the Baltic Depression, where the genus is known from Frasnian deposits. Remigolepis durnalense sp. nov. is described from the Famennian of Spontin near Durnal (Namur Province). Except for the doubtful occurrence of Remigolepis sp. in Scotland, this is the first record of this genus in Western Europe. Its occurrence in Belgium reinforces the strong faunal affinities between Belgium and East Greenland and the hypothesis of a hydrographical link between the two areas during the Late Devonian. Gigantism and acromegaly, usually caused by a pituitary adenoma linked innapropriate secretion of growth hormon (GH) are generally considered as very rare diseases, even if, regarding some authors, their cumulative prevalence is about 1/5000. Starting from the historical case of a giant from Liège we will describe the different types of GH pituitary adenomas and their physiopathology. We will overall discuss rare forms of inherited GH secreting pituitary adenomas like the FIPA (familial inherited isolated pituitary adenomas) and the X-LAG (X linked acrogigantism), both described in Liège, respectively in 2000 and 2014. Introduction: The Copper belt of Katanga presents huge resources of Cu and Co-ore. On the copper hills, mineralized rocks outcrop and a specific flora did develop as a response to the high levels of Cu and Co in soil. Soil-vegetation relationships need to be understood in order to elaborate biodiversity conservation programs prior to industrial mining of the copper hills. Literature: This paper reviews knowledge about soil characterization in the copper hills of Katanga and makes proposals for further research about the influence of the very specific chemical conditions of contaminated soils on the vegetation. The focus was put on the geochemical background and the bioavailability of Cu and Co. A lot of progress has been made recently about identification of soil-vegetation relationships. Conclusion: However, the issue of Cu and Co mobility within soil-plant systems is not entirely solved. [less ▲]

In this double blind, unicentre, randomized, placebo controlled study, we evaluated the changes in 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) serum levels in 150 young Belgian adults (18–30 years), monthly supplemented with 50,000 IU of vitamin D (VTD) or placebo for 6 months, from November 2010 to May 2011. At T0, 30% of the population presented 25(OH)D serum levels below 20 ng/mL. In the VTD-treated group, mean serum levels increased from 21.2 ± 8.2 to 30.6 ± 8.8 ng/mL (𝑃 < 0.001) at T3mo and to 36.0 ± 9.2 ng/mL (𝑃 < 0.001) at T6mo. Despite documented VTD intake, no changes in serum levels were, however, observed in 10% of the treated group. In the placebo group, mean 25(OH)D serum levels decreased from22.8 ± 8.5 to 14.0 ± 6.9 ng/mL at T3mo (𝑃 < 0.001) but returned to values not significantly different from those observed at T0 (23.5 ± 8.6 ng/mL) at T6mo. No difference between serum calcium levels was observed between the groups throughout the study. In conclusion, monthly supplementation with50,000UIofVTDinwinter canwarrant serum25(OH)Dlevels above 20ng/mL in96.2%of thosehealthy young adultswithout inducing unacceptably high 25(OH)D concentration. This supplementation is safe andmay be proposed without 25(OH)D testing. [less ▲]
