Thanks to the precision of Kepler observations, [3] were able to measure the linewidth and amplitude of individual modes (including mixed modes) in several sub- giant power spectra. We perform a forward modelling of a Kepler subgiant based on sur- face properties and observed frequencies. Non-adiabatic computations including a time- dependent treatment of convection give the lifetimes of radial and non-radial modes. Next, combining the lifetimes and inertias with a stochastic excitation model gives the ampli- tudes of the modes. We can now directly compare theoretical and observed linewidths and amplitudes of mixed-modes to obtain new constraints on our theoretical models. [less ▲]

Urban sprawl is transforming our landscapes and rural areas at a spectacular pace. Measuring the strength of the phenomenon and proposing dynamic ways to delineate suburban areas have been the object of much debate amongst scientists. The present article takes the view that, beyond measuring and delineating suburban areas, more efforts should be directed to qualifying the morphology of built settlements within these areas. Therefore it proposes a method based on a semi-automatic classification system of building clusters, designed to describe and interpret the phenomenon from a morphological perspective. This method is based on a combination of field surveys with numerical analyses of digital land cadastre maps. The application of this classification system to the suburban area around Liege reveals that, far from developing in a complete indifference of local conditions, contemporary suburban settlements are influenced by landscape structures inherited from the past. For the hydrological modeling of forested watersheds, the understanding of the forest hydrodynamic is essential. This study focusses on the hydrology of a Belgian forested plot with high stoniness and steep slope. The soil water content is monitored at several positions on the toposequence and at different depth. During rain events, peak in soil water content are observed in different depth depending on the position along the toposequence. [less ▲]

Historical soil contamination within a 3 km radius of a former ore treatment plant was evaluated. A total of 247 topsoil samples were collected in a stratified random sampling design taking into account three factors: land use (LU), soil type (ST) and wind direction (WD). Concentrations of trace elements (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) and major elements (Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Al, Mn) as well as various soil properties (pHwater, pHKCl, TOC and N) were measured. Total Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations were higher than typical background values. Enrichment factors for these three metals were, respectively, 260, 77.4 and 35.5. Principal components analysis (PCA) and factor analysis segregated anthropogenic contamination as a premier factor in influencing concentrations, followed by a second lithogenic factor. The anthropogenic origin of substantial contamination was confirmed though mapping of sample locations relative to contaminant sources. Factor 1 (26.5% of the variance) impacts a large area around the contaminated site and is also indicative of WD influence. Factor 2 (23.9% of the variance) is naturally linked to the local lithology and geology. LU and soil fertility are, respectively, represented by factor 3 (16.5% of the variance), which is linked to pH, and factor 4 (9.3% of the variance), related to organic content. The significance of landscape factors in the spatial distribution of metallic trace elements (MTE) was assessed with an ANCOVA using “distance to the source” as a covariate. Results of the analysis support the hypothesis that Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations are mainly driven by anthropogenic factors, specifically historical industrial activity at the former ore treatment plant. The ANCOVA also provides a means to quantify the impact of LU and ST as well, particularly on MTE availability in soils. The presence of MTE in soil poses known, and potentially significant, risks to both human health and the environment. [less ▲]

A new indirect quadrangular mesh generation algorithm which relies on sequential decision-making techniques to search for optimal triangle recombinations is presented. In contrast to the state-of-art Blossom-quad algorithm, this new algorithm is a good candidate for addressing the 3D problem of recombining tetrahedra into hexahedra. [less ▲]

The present study gives a summary using state-of-the-art technology to monitor Posidonia oceanica and Mytilus galloprovincialis as bioindicators of the pollution of the Mediterranean littoral with trace elements (TEs), and discusses their complementarity and specificities in terms of TE bioaccumulation. Furthermore, this study presents two complementary indices, the Trace Element Spatial Variation Index (TESVI) and the Trace Element Pollution Index (TEPI): these indices were shown to be relevant monitoring tools since they led to the ordering of TEs according to the overall spatial variability of their environmental levels (TESVI) and to the relevant comparison of the global TE pollution between monitored sites (TEPI). In addition, this study also discusses some underestimated aspects of P. oceanica and M. galloprovincialis bioaccumulation behaviour, with regard to their life style and ecophysiology. It finally points out the necessity of developing consensual protocols between monitoring surveys in order to publish reliable and comparable results. [less ▲]

Background. Numerous students are having school difficulties linked to the way they learn. Some people speak of a “metacognitive deficit”. We refer to a “sleeping potential” instead. Be it psychologists, teachers or parents, all wish to develop their skills in order to help these students. This is the case in primary and secondary school. The EDUCA + project is intended to provide possible solutions. Purpose. The aim of this paper is to present a metacognitive and cognitive theory of learning to learn, which will (a) explain why numerous students are having school difficulties, and (b) predict the success of the EDUCA + project. This document compares the contents of the Free Trade Agreements (FTA) that have been signed by the European Union and by the United States with Colombia. It analyses them from a perspective that characterizes FTAs into “WTO-extra” and “WTO-plus” agreements. By this analysis, an “Americanization” of the European interregional strategy is partially verified. Nevertheless, this “Americanization” appears to be partial, due to the inclusion of “regional integration” as a transversal theme in European FTA. [less ▲]

It is usual to think of the spectacular development of the Brentano School in Austria as being tied to the rise of a specific research program, which is sometimes dubbed “Austrian phenomenology”. I discuss here some evidences for the existence of such a program. In the discussion, I highlight two claims which I take to be constitutive of the Brentanian phenomenology. The first one is the epistemological claim according to which our concepts all have an empirical origin, which has to be located in the experience we have of our own mental states. The second one is the methodological claim according to which describing a mental phenomenon P is nothing but analysing P, where “analysing P” simply means “distinctly perceiving all the constituents of P”. Although a deeper insight in those two claims would require considerable further investigations, I suggest they should be part of the picture when it comes to adjudicating on the specificity of the Brentanian program.
