Recent theoretical accounts of verbal and visuo-spatial short-term memory (STM) have proposed the existence of domain-general mechanisms for the maintenance of serial order information. These accounts are based on the observation of similar behavioural effects across several modalities, such as temporal grouping effects. Across two experiments, the present study aimed at extending these findings, by exploring a STM modality that has received little interest so far, STM for musical information. Given its inherent rhythmic, temporal and serial organisation, the musical domain is of interest for investigating serial order STM processes such as temporal grouping. In Experiment 1, the data did not allow to determine the presence or the absence of temporal grouping effects. In Experiment 2, we observed that temporal grouping of tone sequences during encoding improves short-term recognition for serially presented probe tones. Furthermore, the serial position curves included micro-primacy and micro-recency effects, which are the hallmark characteristic of temporal grouping. Our results suggest that the encoding of serial order information in musical STM may be supported by temporal positional coding mechanisms similar to those reported in the verbal domain. [less ▲]

The predominant production model of Bioenergy, which is based on first-generation biofuels developed on a global scale, creates ecological impacts throughout the production chain, resulting in a paradox, as well as social unrest and territorial conflict. This paper focuses on agro-energy and second-generation biofuels, investigating the structural differences, the advantages, the potential problems and the possible solutions of some local biofuel initiatives in North-Western Europe. Singlet oxygen-based photocatalytic oxygenation reactions have emerged as an efficient technology to synthesize value-added organic molecules. Among organic substrates, bio-sourced molecules such as aminoacids or terpenes have a promising forecast as synthetic building blocks. A pseudo first-order kinetic study for the photocatalytic oxygenation of natural amino acid (L)-methionine was carried out in a macroscopic batch reactor. Various parameters were studied, including the effect of the photosensitizer (Rose Bengal, RB) concentration, the intensity of the light and the O2 flow in terms of apparent kinetic constants and space-time yields. The identification of important limiting parameters as pressure, gas flow or light efficiency during the photocatalytic oxygenation of methionine allowed its transition from macroscopic batch reactor to continuous-flow microreactor. Dietary fiber (DF) has many positive effects on human health associated with its functionality in the gastrointestinal tract. These benefits vary according to the type of DF. Vegetables can be a natural source of DF in the diet. However, to provide adequate nutritional advice, the content and profile of their various DF types must be characterized. This study aimed to determine the DF profile of 29 vegetables cultivated in Wallonia (Belgium) and the impact of steaming on these profiles. Using a combination of enzymatic, gravimetric and chromatographic methods, fructans, total dietary fiber (TDF), low- and high-molecular-weight soluble dietary fiber (SDF), and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) were analyzed. Results show that the DF content varies considerably among the 29 investigated vegetable varieties and species, but the influence of steaming is limited to a shift from IDF to high-molecular-weight SDF for 18 of the 29 tested vegetables, while fructans are preserved with not actual reduction in the DP. In the eighteenth century, literary journals have set a specific relationship with their readers. By publishing letters from the public and by answering to their demands (or not), the journalists have established a readers’ community that share a common cultural universe. This article aims at analyzing the relationship between the antiphilosophe François-Xavier de Feller and the readership of his Journal historique et littéraire. The journalist, who wishes to fight against the philosophes and to spread his own radical ideas above all, has however taken his public’s capacity of reaction into account. This article will question the mechanisms of this relationship by considering the letters from the public to the editor but also Feller’s own addresses to his readership published in the journal. Even if he refuses the idea that every man is able to use his own critical reason, the journalist has been influenced by his readership but, more importantly, he has maintained in his public a new form of criticism, radically opposed to the ideas of Enlightenment. Objectives: To examine beliefs about cracking sounds heard during highvelocity lowamplitude (HVLA) thrust spinal manipulation in individuals with and without personal experience of this technique. Methods: We included 100 individuals. Among them, 60 had no history of spinal manipulation, including 40whowereasymptomatic with or without a past history of spinal pain and 20whohad nonspecific spinal pain. The remaining 40 patients had a history of spinal manipulation;amongthem, 20 were asymptomatic and 20 had spinal pain. Participants attended a oneonone interview during which they completed a questionnaire about their history of spinal manipulation and their beliefs regarding sounds heard during spinal manipulation. Results: Mean age was 43.5±15.4 years. The sounds were ascribed to vertebral repositioning by 49% of participants and to friction between two vertebras by 23% of participants; only 9% of participants correctly ascribed the sound to the release of gas. The sound was mistakenly considered to indicate successful spinal manipulation by 40% of participants. No differences in beliefs were found between the groups with and without a history of spinal manipulation. Conclusions: Certain beliefs have documented adverse effects. This study showed a high prevalence of unfounded beliefs regarding spinal manipulation. These beliefs deserve greater attention from healthcare providers, particularly those who practice spinal manipulation. [less ▲]

In the Italian public debate, the Mediterranean has represented a discursive formation employed to describe the South as the Other of the North. It has been associated with ‘soft’ representations of cultural order and ‘hard’ discourses of civicness that identify the South along a specific set of sociocultural elements, moral norms and forms of civic organization. The Italian city of Naples holds much empirical evidence as an originator of such Mediterranean discursive formation. Since the early 1990s, singer-songwriters and musicians have attempted to transform this discursive formation and to popularize a positive idea of Mediterraneaness on a cultural, ethnic and political dimension. The aim of this article is to explore this process through musical and ethnographic sources. Neapolitan artists Eugenio Bennato, Almamegretta and 99 Posse provide the case studies. [less ▲]
