We revisit the limit on very light axion-like particles (ALPs) from the absence of gamma rays coincidental with the neutrino burst from SN1987A. We use updated supernova simulations, modern models for the magnetic field inside the Galaxy, and a Primakoff cross section which takes into account proton-degeneracy and mass-reduction effects. We finally give an updated exclusion plot for the electromagnetic coupling of sub-eV ALPs, comparing our new bound with other limits as well as with future ALP searches. [less ▲]

Familial pituitary adenomas accounts for approximately 5-8 % of all pituitary adenomas. Besides the adenomas occurring as part of syndromic entities that bring together several endocrine or other systems disorders, 2-3% of the familial pituitary adenomas fit into the familial isolated pituitary adenomas (FIPA) syndrome. 20% of FIPA syndromes have shown mutations in the AIP gene and have distinct clinical characteristics. Recent findings have isolated a new non-AIP FIPA syndrome called X-LAG, resulting from duplication in GPR-101 gene. These new advances in the field of pituitary disease are opening up a new challenging domain to both clinician and researcher. This review will focus on these last findings and their contribution to the diagnosis and the management of familial pituitary adenomas. [less ▲]

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is blood plasma with a high concentration of autologous platelets which constitute an immense reservoir of growth factors. The clinical use of PRP is widespread in various medical applications. Although highly popular with athletes, the use of PRP for the treatment of tendinopathies remains scientifically controversial, particularly due to the diversity of products that go by the name of “PRP.” To optimize its use, it is important to look at the various stages of obtaining PRP. In this literature review, we take a closer look at eight parameters which may influence the quality of PRP: 1) anticoagulants used to preserve the best platelet function, 2) the speed of centrifugation used to extract the platelets, 3) the platelet concentrations obtained, 4) the impact of the concentration of red and while blood cells on PRP actions, 5) platelet activators encouraging platelet degranulation and, hence, the release of growth factors, and 6) the use or nonuse of local anesthetics when carrying out infiltration. In addition to these parameters, it may be interesting to analyze other variables such as 7) the use of ultrasound guidance during the injection with a view to determining the influence they have on potential recovery. Aim: The Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) is the most studied and validated instrument to measure psychopathy. We aimed to explore its items content invariance to forensic schizophrenic subjects. Method: We examined the PCL-R protocol of 15 male forensic schizophrenic subjects and attributed a score of sensitivity to psychotic symptomatology to each item score. Results: Results suggest that the applicability of the PCL-R items to a forensic schizophrenic sample is not to be blindly warranted. Some items more systematically positively influenced by psychotic symptoms (e.g. Shallow Affect, Lack of Remorse or Guilt), while others were negatively influenced (e.g. Promiscuous Sexual Behavior, Glib and Superficial Charm), or not influenced at all (e.g. Criminal Versatility). Conclusions: The current study suggest that the applicability of the PCL-R items to a forensic schizophrenic sample is not to be blindly warranted. We discuss both psychometric and conceptual implications for the measurement of psychopathy when a diagnosis of schizophrenia has been established. [less ▲]

From both a scientific and a practical point of view, two major trends seem to presently rule the adult training field: the psychosociological trend and the ergonomic trend. Though each one has widely contributed in developing training in organizational human resources development, we fail to see any significant level of understanding between the two trends or any dialogue based on scientific objectivity. The aim of this present paper is to hopefully initiate a dialogue with an eye towards development in training practices. A better understanding of these main approaches would bring help to those who seek to train personnel and to better orientate their choice of training. [less ▲]

This paper offers a reconstruction of Franz Brentano’s mereological solution to the problem of the unity of consciousness and explores some implications of this solution for the ontology of the mind. In section 1 I sketch Brentano’s ontological distinctions between things, collectives, and divisives. In section 2 I present Brentano’s mereological solution and in section 3 I review his main pro-arguments. Eventually, in section 4 I consider some Jamesian objections to the mereological approach. I argue the notion of ‘mental parts’ can be given a rather innocuous meaning by being conceived of as the expression of conceptual distinctions grounded in similarity and contrast relations between total mental phenomena.
