Abstract :	[en] The first part of this paper deals with a review of factors which influence the efficacy of respiration and with the pulmonary function tests in animals. The second part describes the pecularities of the bovine pulmonary function in order to: (A) better understand their higher sensitivity to respiratory diseases, (B) select these animals for higher performance of their aerobic metabolism and (C) adapt the prevention of respiratory diseases on basis of their physiological pecularities.
	[nl] Na een kort overzicht van de faktoren welke de efficiëntie van de ademhaling beïnvloeden en van de voornaamste technieken die bij het onderzoek van de ademhalingsfunktie aangewend worden, belicht dit overzicht de specifieke faktoren welke de ademhalingsfunktie bij runderen bepalen, met het doel: (A) beter de grote gevoeligheid van runderen voor ademhalingsziekten te begrijpen, (B) in staat te zijn runderen te selekteren met het oog op een optimale werking van hun aëroob metabolisme en (C) de preventie van ademhalingsziekten aan te passen in funktie van de fysiologische karakteristieken van deze diersoort.
