[en] Since 1997 the permanent forest inventory which is conducted in Walloon Region provides much more information than those traditionally related to forest production (growing stock, wooded areas, …). It has progressively moved to a very detailed information system which is one of the main source of data useful to sustainable forest management in terms of : monitoring the development of forest biological diversity, setting up of Natura2000 sites, estimation of carbon stock. The inventory that will be carried out repeatedly (10 000 sampling plots revisited, one tenth per year) can also be considered as a management tool in forest certification.
