Abstract :
[en] The validity of the concept of independent publishing within academia is not self-evident. After a short examination of how the expression “independence” is employed in the comics publishing business and notably contrasts with the use of “alternative,” this chapter argues that the former term can either refer to an encompassing label or to an analytical tool. The meanings generally attributed to the concept of “independence” can indeed vary according to the ways in which the press and the sector actors embrace or, on the contrary, reject the term. Needless to say, the terminological confusion surrounding the shifting meanings of “independence” as it relates to the comics industry has given rise to much controversy. And this controversy has, in its turn, led some of the stakeholders in comics to either abandon the term altogether in favor of the “alternative” designation, or to engage in new tentative definitions. It is my contention that one way to critically reassess the concept of independent comics publishing would consist in designating under this appellation publishing structures that, on the one hand, embrace most of the characteristics formulated by l’Alliance des Éditeurs Indépendants and, on the other, belong to an institution (Jacques Dubois) or to an “art world” (Howard S. Becker).
