Abstract :
[en] After attending this presentation, attendees will gain an understanding about specific types of mass murderers and the differences with terrorist offenders. This presentation will impact the forensic science community by providing an in depth psychological and criminological description of mass murderers and terrorist profiles, including warning signs. Pseudocommandos and terrorists kill innocent people. They generally both kill during daytime, plan their offenses and generally expect to be killed during their attack. In a first part and through the study of criminal files, the authors propose a casuistic analysis of a belgian mass murderer. All the aspects of the psychopathology and criminology of this offender will be discussed, including the precise offending sequence. In a second part, the authors will compare the psychopathology of mass murderers and terrorist offenders. Despite their similarities, these two kind of offenders also have strong differences in their psychological and social characteristics. These differences are very important in terms of motivation, state of mind, psychopathology and finally for forensic evaluations. In conclusions, mass murderers and terrorists have common characteristics. Otherwise, their basic psychological and criminological functionings are different. These elements are important and should be considered in forensic evaluations.
