Abstract :
[en] Locality and place making as elements of social sustainability play a significant role in a world of growing globalization. More and more researchers and professionals realize that the identity of small communities is also constructed by modest heritage, responsible for a large part of the quality and social cohesion. Once we focus on the historical, social, cultural, ecological and physical meshwork, we transcend the solely focus on the object to explore the physical, emotional and experiential realities of place and how these are rooted in the individual and collective memory as they unfold in the everyday life. In the creation of a sustainable and resilient society the meaning and appropriation of that heritage is too important and too complex to restrict the significance of it purely to the artefact itself with its acknowledged architectural, historical or archaeological values. How can new meaning of place be enacted, created and negotiated in current times of migration and mobility? What is the status and role of modest heritage in small communities today? Does it still play a considerable role in the identity, quality and social cohesion of a region? How do we explore the intangible dimension of the tangible? How do we deal with the intangible and informal aspects of heritage? This paper concentrates on these issues in the complex urban countryside of the region of Flanders (Belgium). Flanders is a highly dense and post-industrialized area where the countryside is under an urbanized pressure. Within the fabric we detect numerous small-scale heritage as chapels, parsonages, ice-cellars, donjons, square farms and wind- and watermills. Possible relationships of heritage with its context will be tackled, explored and tested in different layers through particular cases within the strategy of storytelling as a spatial practice.
