Abstract :
[en] In Burundi, family farming occupies more than 90% of the active population and plays a vital role in food production and participates in the formation of more than 50% of GDP. Before the civil war of 1993, Kirundo was deemed “breadbasket of the country” because it fed many parts of Burundi in particular food legumes and cereals, so that family farming was market-oriented. Today, this is the first province in Burundi that shows a high rate of malnutrition, poverty increased and a sharp decline in agricultural production up more than 56.6% from 1996 to 2009. The objective of this study is to understand the impact of land conflict on the socio-economic development of farmers in Kirundo Province. To conduct this study, an initial survey was carried out in 2010 among 355 randomly selected farmers in all communes of Kirundo. To understand the scope of land conflicts and its consequences on the socio-economic households, a second survey was conducted among 30 people who came to the High Court of Kirundo. The study was completed by collecting data on the courts of the residential suburbs of Bugabira, Busoni, Gitobe, Kirundo, Ntega and Vumbi communes, and also on the High Court of Kirundo province. Analysis of the results shows that land conflicts in the region have the following consequences: huge losses of agricultural production, substantial legal costs and the imprisonment and killing of people because of land conflicts.
