[en] Superficial skin surface stripping (SSSS) enables the study of the outermost cell layers of the stratum corneum. In this article we review the diagnostic value and the research possibilities offered by SSSS. This technique is non invasive and provides information useful in the differential diagnosis of erythematosquamous and eczematous lesions and pigmented neoplasms. For research purposes SSSS can also be used as substratum for scanning electron microscopic assessments and biochemical analysis. [nl] Oppervlakte-biopsie is een niet-invasieve methode om de bovenste lagen van het stratum corneum te bestuderen. In dit artikel geven wij een overzicht van de mogelijkheden van oppervlakte-zoek. Voor de differentiële diagnostiek van erythematosquameuze en eczemateuze laesies en gepigmenteerde tumoren kan een oppervlakte-biopsie zoveel informatie opleveren dat eventueel een juidbiopt vermeden kan worden. Oppervlakte-biopsieën kunnen ook dienen als basismateriaal voor elektronenmicrosopisch onderzoek en voor biochemische analyse van de hoornlaag.
