Relationship between the Synthesis of Prussian Blue Pigments, Their Color, Physical Properties, and Their Behavior in Paint Layers

Title: Relationship between the Synthesis of Prussian Blue Pigments, Their Color, Physical Properties, and Their Behavior in Paint Layers

Author, co-author: Samain, Louise; Grandjean, Fernande; Long, Gary J.; Martinetto, Pauline; Bordet, Pierre; Strivay, David

Abstract: Prussian blue pigments, highly insoluble mixed-valence iron(III) hexacyanoferrate(II) complexes of typical stoichiometry Fe4III[FeII(CN)6]3·xH2O or KFeIII[FeII(CN)6]·xH2O, have been used as pigments in oil paintings and watercolors for 300 years. For poorly understood reasons, these pigments often fade with time. Although the preparation methods have been recognized since the mid-eighteenth century as a contributory factor in the fading of the pigment, the spectral and physical properties of Prussian blue that vary with the type of synthesis were not precisely identified. Several Prussian blue pigments have been prepared by different methods and characterized by thermogravimetric analyses, high-energy powder X-ray diffraction, atomic absorption and flame emission, UV–visible, iron-57 Mössbauer, iron K-edge X-ray absorption, and Raman spectroscopy. The type of synthesis influences the hue, tinting strength, and hiding power properties of the Prussian blue pigments. Two major features appear to be strongly dependent on the preparative methods, the particle size and the local disorder. Both a nitrogen atmosphere and an intermediate aging step of the Berlin white, Fe2II[FeII(CN)6], during the synthesis are required to obtain a highly colored pigment through the optimization of particle size, minimization in the perturbations to the FeII–CN–FeIII intervalence electron transfer pathway, and the minimization of disordered vacancies. The potassium containing Prussian blue structure has been revisited. It can be described with the Pm3m space group, where approximately one-quarter of the [FeII(CN)6]4– sites are vacant and where the potassium cation is located at a zeolitic-like position inside the lattice cavities. The degree of ordering of the [FeII(CN)6]4– vacancies in all Prussian blues was quantified using atomic pair distribution analysis, an ordering that is consistent with the iron K-edge X-ray absorption spectra. The presence of strain in the crystals is observed by both powder X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The structural similarity between the alkali-free, improperly referred to as “insoluble”, and the alkali containing, “soluble”, Prussian blues may explain why the two varieties are almost undistinguishable by spectroscopic techniques.
Abstract: In the middle of the XIXe century, thousands of Walloons left Belgium to settle in Wisconsin, USA.

Abstract: Taking into consideration the intangible cultural heritage holds a central position in the new challenges confronting today's various cultural communities. The author briefly repositions globalization and cultural diversity and shows that, faced with these two basic guidelines, communies' reactions can be radically opposed : acceptance or refusal of the multiculturalism and, in the case of refusal, an essentialist or evolutionary approach. The latter sacrifices heritage for the benefit of trends, supported by new technologies; the first emphasizes the use of an idealised past in what the author identifies as a policy of "folklorisation". Fortunately, some communities accomplish a positive combination and revitalize their heritage through new forms of communication. This is the case of the municipality of Clare in Nova Scotia, the flag-bearer of a growing Acadian identity.; La prise en compte du patrimoine culturel immatériel occupe une position centrale dans les nouveaux défis auxquels sont confrontées aujourd'hui les diverses communautés culturelles.

However, for the visitor driving along the “Sinistra Piave”, the landscape is seen as a rhythmical composition of invitation to movement at different scales and at various intensity, that can be compared to a musical composition. The question then is how to transform the road from a simple through-way into an occasion to engage with the Colli del Piave, to transform a “landscape scenery” into an “experienced landscape”.

Author, co-author: Szanto, Catherine

Abstract: Analyses of gardens are commonly encountered through plan and perspective views only – as if a garden in situ might be replaced by its representation in plan, and as if the actual experience of a garden is limited to a succession of views. Yet, walking in the garden (any garden) is a much richer experience than simply encountering a succession of framed views. Being spatial environments, gardens are perceived and explored by looking, feeling, walking visitors. The graphical explorations in this essay are an attempt to explore
the components and underlying structure of the spatial experiences inherent in any designed space.

Author, co-author: Szanto, Catherine; Gay, Fabrizio; Ballarin, Matteo

Abstract: The Biennales of Venice are not limited to exhibitions in national pavilions. Every year artists and architects choose to confront the site and more specifically, the lagoon. In the edition of 2005, the artist O. Eliasson proposed an installation (Your black horizon, 2005) where the visitors left the wide expanse and intense light of the lagoon to enter a darkened enclosed space with subtle light effects. These aesthetic experiences enhanced the visitors’ perception of light by changing the usual spatiality and temporality of colour. We will analyze the role of memory in the rite of the visit, and look at how the museal strategies of the artist create a play with spatial memory and sense of orientation in relation to the outdoor space of the lagoon.
