This model helps the conception of evaluation of impacts that therapeutic education (to patients) may have. It considers two axes. The first one is the axis of 4 types of actors : patients, their family members, healthcare givers, and the health institutions. The second axis is constituted by the 4 levels suggested by Kirkpatrick to evaluate a training action : trainee's satisfaction, acquisitions, behaviors transfered in everyday life, ultimate benefits fdor the ultimate targets. Esthetic results in dentistry are determined by the harmony between the dental prostheses and the soft tissues. To reach an optimal result, each single step of the treatment has a great importance, from the smile analyses to the final restoration delivery. The goal of this lecture is to describe how to elaborate a treatment planning for single and multiple tooth replacement in the aesthetic zone. A decision tree for the surgical protocols will be proposed according to our clinical experience at the university of Liège and, the current scientific evidences. The overall objective is, from an initial clinical situation, to determine the appropriate treatment approach and timing. The following scientific aspects will be developed: - The biological concept of extraction socket preservation. The use of biomaterials for alveolar bone augmentation or socket preservation. The goal is to clarify properties of the mostly used biomaterial in dentistry, as well as determine their clinical indications and limitations. Soft tissue management around teeth and implant [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Let k be an integer. Two words u and v of the same length are k-abelian equivalent, if they have the same prefix (resp. suffix) of length k-1 and if, for all words x of length k, the numbers of occurrences of x in u and v are the same. This notion has received some recent interest, see the works of Karhumäki et al. The k-abelian complexity of an infinite word x maps an integer n to the number of k-abelian classes partitioning the set of factors of length n occurring in x. The Thue-Morse word is a well-known and extensively studied 2-automatic sequence. It is trivially abelian periodic and its (1)-abelian complexity takes only two values. The aim of this talk is to explain how to compute the 2-abelian complexity a(n) of the Thue-Morse word, showing in particular that it is unbounded. We conjecture that a(n) is 2-regular in the sense of Allouche and Shallit. This question can be related to a recent work of Madill and Rampersad where the (1)-abelian complexity of the paper folding word is shown to be 2-regular. We will also explain why the usual logical framework introduced by Büchi and popularized by Bruyère (indeed, automatic sequences can be characterized in an extension of the Presburger arithmetic) and the recent work of Charlier et al. about "automatic theorem-proving" of properties of automatic sequences cannot be applied to these questions related to abelian complexity. [less ▲]

Elasto-inertial turbulence is a new state of turbulence that may occur in certain viscoelastic flows, in particular flows with polymer additives. The dynamics of elasto-inertial turbulence is here investigated numerically from the perspective of the coupling between polymer dynamics and flow structures. The resulting mechanism helps resolve a long standing controversy in the understanding of polymer drag reduction and explains the phenomenon of early turbulence, or onset of turbulence at lower Reynolds numbers than for Newtonian flows, previously observed in polymeric flows. In particular, we show that the introduction of small perturbations into the polymeric flow excites the unstable nature of the nonlinear advection term, resulting in the formation of sheets or cliffs of polymer stretch. These sheets of high polymer stretch, hosting a significant increase in extensional viscosity, create a strong local anisotropy, with a formation of local low-speed jet-like flow. The response of the flow is through pressure, whose role is to redistribute energy across components of momentum, resulting in the formation of waves, or trains of alternating rotational and straining motions. The mechanism shares some similarity with the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, except that the thickness of these sheets is too close to the Kolmogorov scale for vortices to be created. Once triggered, EIT is self-sustained since the elastic instability creates the very velocity fluctuations it feeds upon. [less ▲]

This work presents a method for quantitative comparison of numerical results to experimental measurements. It is based on the concept of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition. This technique is selected in order to compare the unsteady aerodynamic flows around static and oscillating bodies obtained from wind tunnel testing and numerical simulations. Two dimensional Time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry measurements are carried out on the upper surface a 4:1 rectangular cylinder. Simulations are performed using unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes and an unsteady Discrete Vortex Method. It is demonstrated that the proposed technique is a good preliminary step for comparing the main characteristics of unsteady aerodynamic data. [less ▲]

YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thick films are investigated for magnetic shielding applications at low frequencies (< 1 kHz). This requires deposition of YBCO on curved substrates such as tubes, half-tubes or even more complex shapes. Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) is an efficient method to achieve this goal: positively-charged YBCO particles suspended in a non aqueous medium drift towards the substrate, used as negative electrode for the application of the electric field. A crucial point is then to optimize the heat treatment of the as-deposited layers in order to achieve suitable superconducting properties. In the present work, we have developed a new suspension formulation in butanol, using a suitable surfactant to stabilize the suspension of YBCO powder (grain size < 2 µm). The EPD parameters (deposition voltage, deposition time, number of layers,...) have been selected to provide uniform layers of YBCO on silver substrates of various shapes. In the proposed communication, we shall discuss in detail the optimization of the heat treatments to achieve densification, peritectic recombination and oxygenation of the YBCO thick films deposited on silver. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive analysis was extensively used to characterize the (i) density / porosity, (ii) presence of macro-cracks, (iii) thickness uniformity, (iv) secondary phase content. We shall then present the characterization of the superconducting properties of the best films. Typically, a uniformly coated 55μm-thick YBCO film on a curved Ag substrate shows a magnetic Tc onset at 92.2 K and sharp resistive transition (< 1K). [less ▲]

Most of the IPCC-AR4 global circulation models predict an increase of the Antarctic Surface Mass Balance (SMB) during the 21st century that would mitigate global sea level rise. High-resolution modeling is necessary to adequately capture the Antarctic SMB, that is why we present here a downscaling method leading to 15-km SMB resolution for century time-scales over Antarctica. Our first results show that a higher resolution induce at the same time more run-off but a significantly higher mitigation of sea level rise for the next centuries. [less ▲]

[1] J. Akola, R. O. Jones, S. Kohara, T. Usuki, and E. In this presentation we compare DEMs generated using terrestrial LIDAR and UAV data. The study site is a small agricultural watershed located near the region of Gembloux in Belgium. Terresttrial LiDAR data was collected using Trimble GX trought 14 scans. After correcting errors by using statistical approach, scans are meshed to generate a DEM of 1 m x 1 m resolution. UAV data was collected using the X100 UAV commercialized by gatewing. Data was processed in the open source MICMAC software to generate a DEM of 1 m x 1 m resolution. DEMs comparison to ground control points surveyed by RTK GPS, showed that DEM generated using terrestrial LiDAR data is the most precise with a RMSE of 4.9 cm compare to the DEM from UAV data which RMSE was 9.0 cm. In this talk, we survey facts mostly emerging from the seminal results of Alan Cobham obtained in the late sixties and early seventies about sets of integers whose base k expansions are recognized by some finite automaton. We do not expect any background from the audience, so we will present the basic definitions and many examples. We will not attempt to be exhaustive but try instead to present some actual research directions about numeration systems, recognizable sets of integers and automatic sequences. If there is enough time, we will briefly sketch some results about transcendence related to the representation of real numbers. [less ▲]

Undesirable stiction, which results from contact between surfaces, is a major failure mode in micro-switches. This is especially true when contact happens between surfaces where elastoplastic asperities deform permanently until the surfaces reach plastic accommodation. Indeed before or at accommodation, the adhesive forces can become so important that the two surfaces remain permanently glued, limiting the life-time of the MEMS. To predict the behavior a micro adhesive-contact model is developed, which account for the surfaces topography evolutions during elasto-plastic contacts. This model can be used at a higher scale to study the MEMS behavior, and thus its life-time. The MEMS devices studied here are assumed to work in a dry environment. In these operating conditions only the Van der Waals forces have to be considered for adhesion. For illustration purpose, an electrostatic-structural analysis is performed on a micro-switch. To determine the degree of plasticity involved, the impact energy of the movable electrode at pull-in is estimated. Thus the maximal adhesive force is predicted using the developed model.Within this formalism, the cyclic loading and accommodation effects can be taken into account, as represented on the picture, which shows the non-dimensional force vs. separation distance of two rough surfaces after different cycle numbers. The advantages of micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS), such as low power requirement, miniature sizes and costs reduction, has already made significant impact in many technological fields. MEMS are now widely used as accelerometers, pressure sensors, and resonators. However, the determination of mechanical properties of MEMS devices with high accuracy is still a challenging task due to their miniature size. For example, the crystal size and orientation may have a significant effect on the fracture strength of MEMS microstructure. Among several important materials used for the development of MEMS devices, polycrystalline silicon plays a key role in various applications. Thus, an understanding of the relationship between poly-silicon manufacturing processes, and the resulting mechanical behaviour and durability of micro-fabricated structures is needed to allow rational design of MEMS devices. This work focuses on the modelling and simulation of the fracture of MEMS, made up of polycrystalline silicon, by discontinuous Galerkin (DG) formulation combined with an extrinsic cohesive law. The problem is solved as plane-stress type. All the elements are discontinuous in the DG method, and inter-element continuity is weakly enforced by having recourse to interface elements. When a fracture criterion is reached, an extrinsic cohesive law is activated on the already existing interface elements. The cracks can be initiated, merged or propagated, in this method. The fracture properties of material can be considered different along crystal interfaces and inside crystal bulk, and can account for crystal orientation. Moreover this method avoid drawbacks of usual cohesive method (no modification of the structure stiffness and no complex implementation in parallel) allowing for accurate large scale simulation. Polycrystalline silicon is an orthotropic material, i.e., it has different material properties, such as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, fracture strength, along different crystal lattice planes. These properties are also symmetric for a cubic crystal, i.e., the lattice planes perpendicular to each other have similar properties. This symmetric nature is well captured in the proposed work by a new formulation to compute effective fracture strength along any plane of interest based on the known values of the same along (1 0 0), (1 1 0), and (1 1 1) lattice planes. The effect of thickness of MEMS is also included by computing the effective stress on interface elements at different vertical angles. These formulations are analyzed by sample simulation results. The efficiency and accuracy of the method are assessed by experiments involving on-chip fracture tests, providing the fracture stress, and supplemented by the characterization of the test specimen. The characterization consists of the measurement of grain size and crystallographic orientation by electron back scattering diffraction, and the determination of crack path. An important point is the analysis of the competition between inter-granular versus trans-granular crack path with respect to the grain orientation. [less ▲]
