This research presents the results of a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the use of the Dutch placement verbs zetten (‘put’) and leggen (‘lay’) by French-speaking learners of Dutch. The experiment consisted of two parts: a receptive as well as a productive part. The analysis focused on two aspects: speech, but also the gestures made by the participants were both quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. The results confirm that the use of Dutch placement verbs is problematic for French-speaking learners of Dutch, but they also reveal some important tendencies. First, my analysis demonstrates that French-speaking learners tend to underuse these verbs, which can be explained by the fact that placement events in French are often described by means of a neutral verb such as mettre (‘put’) as opposed to the more specific verbs in Dutch. Secondly, the learners occasionally also tend to overuse the placement verbs in contexts where such verbs are not allowed, an observation which is seemingly paradoxical to the first one. Thirdly, some learners also tend to confuse zetten with leggen and vice versa. These findings are interesting given that the Dutch placement verbs, with a few exceptions, remain a relatively unexplored area within the field of linguistics. [less ▲]

When you are in a joyful mood, how do you know that it is so? On a Cartesian picture, the answer is that you’ve got some immediate, noninferential apprehension of your being joyful, such as (i) this noninferential apprehension is analogous to sense perception (perceptual account), and (ii) unlike sense perception, it makes it unquestionable or evident to you that you presently are in a joyful mood (epistemic privilege). In this paper, I defend this view against some classical objections, arguing that pre-reflective self-consciousness actually is analogous to sense perception. [less ▲]

This paper examines the dynamic trading strategies implemented by hedge fund managers using a Kalman filter of hedge fund betas across styles. We further investigate the risk drivers of dynamic trades, examining which conditioning/macroeconomic variables strongly lead the time variation in fund trades. We report the significance of macroeconomic factors such as interest rates, dividend yield, GDP growth and US unemployment. We show that hedge fund managers do control the intensity of their exposures according to economic uncertainty and that differences between up- and down-market regimes can be observed. Commonly, Hedge funds tend to dislike high-dividend paying stocks. Besides, all hedge fund styles are shown to display pro-cyclical exposures towards directional equity factors as well as credit and liquidity risks. Small growth stocks, however, are revealed to be crisis investments whose allocation increases with unemployment, inflation or volatility. As volatility increases, the value of growth options embedded into growth stocks indeed increases. Growth stocks are shown to hedge market reversals and volatility. The outperformance of growth companies in recessions might also relate to their cost flexibility. Allocation to small stocks embed strong micro risks and might also constitute a hedge in economic slowdowns. This might explain why some funds with such a particular investment focus appear to be countercyclical. [less ▲]

One of the basic rules in trade law is the freedom of trade. However, such rule encounters some limits when the object of trade is constituted by strategic and sensitive items, among which there are the so-called 'dual-use' goods and technologies. Despite the difficulty to define them, there is a common understanding that they are materials and items normally used for civilian/peaceful purposes but which may also have military application. Because of their 'sensitiveness' and their risk to affect security, health, the environment etc., their trade needs to be controlled. One form of controlling their trade is represented by the imposition of sanctions to be adopted in case of violation of trade rules. In our understanding, there are three categories of sanctions: (a) ‘supranational’ ones, enacted at the international and European Union (EU) level, which are addressing the whole States (‘comprehensive’ sanctions, such as embargoes, boycotts and financial measures), or specific individuals or groups involved in legal activities (‘targeted’ or ‘smart’ sanctions, such as asset freezes and travel bans); (b) ‘implementing’ ones, which are enacted at national level. They consist of administrative, civil or criminal rules implementing legally binding/‘hard law’ supranational rules (i.e., national sanctions for violation of international or regional embargoes or other trade sanctions), and those implementing politically binding or ‘soft law’ rules (i.e., national sanctions for the violation of export control regimes, which are the guidelines for dual-use trade, provided by international forum of countries within the Zangger Committee, the Nuclear Suppliers Group, Australia Group, the Wassenaar Arragement and the Missile Technology Control Regime, and at the EU level through the Regulation 428/2009); and (c) ‘unilateral sanctions’ and ‘countermeasures’, which are National autonomous measures against another State or the single citizens of that State. In this paper, the focus is posed on the first category only. It aims to analyse - with a comparative approach - on the one hand, the types of measures adopted at the level of the United Nations (UN) on the basis of Chapter VII of the UN Charter and through the Security Council resolutions and, on the other one, the restrictive measures introduced within the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU. Hydrogeological inverse modeling is used for integrating data and calibrating subsurface model parameters. On one hand, deterministic approaches are relatively fast but fail to catch the uncertainty related to the spatial distribution of model parameters. On the other hand, stochastic inverse modeling is time-consuming and sampling the full high-dimensional parameter space is generally impossible. Even then, the end result is not the inverted model itself, but the forecast built from such models. In this study, we investigate a prediction-focused approach (PFA) in order to derive a direct statistical relationship between data and forecast without explicitly calibrating any models to the data. To derive this relationship, we first sample a limited number of models from the prior distribution using geostatistical methods. For each model, we then apply two forward simulations: the first corresponds to the forward model of the data (past), the second corresponds to the forward model of the forecast (future). The relationship between observed data and forecast is generally highly non-linear, depending on the complexity of the prior distribution and the differences in the two forward operators. In order to derive a useful relationship, we first reduce the dimension of the data and the forecast through principal component analysis (PCA) related techniques in order to keep the most informative part of both sets. Then, we apply canonical correlation analysis (CCA) to establish a linear relationship between data and forecast in the reduced space components. If such a relationship exists, it is possible to directly sample the posterior distribution of the forecast with a multi-Gaussian framework. In this study, we apply this methodology to forecast the evolution with time of the distribution of temperature in a control panel in an alluvial aquifer. We simulate a heat tracing experiment monitored with both well logging probes and electrical resistivity tomography. We show (1) that the proposed method can be used to quantify the uncertainty on the forecast both spatially and temporally and (2) that spatially-distributed data acquired through geophysical methods help to significantly reduce the uncertainty of the posterior. In this article, we present a Building Information Modeler essential for creating, viewing and evaluating the performance of a modular building project, based on a digital model. First, we explain our approach, called "by components" and its central notion of "catalog", capable of supporting the virtualization of the construction system in the modeler. Secondly, we describe the software architecture established for this original modeller, based on a dual-purpose data model: representing the catalogs of components and allowing the encoding of a specific project within the software. Then, our article will introduce the products obtained, in terms of operating geometric and semantic information from the catalog components. In particular, it will show how, depending on the driving activity types, these productions can be generated under different operating formats. Finally, the article will introduce the limits of this Building Information Modeler and the future opportunities provided by its extensibility. [less ▲]

The origin of the eukaryotes remains one of the most contentious puzzles in evolution. In the late 1970s, C. Woese discovered Archaea and put an end to the dichotomous view of Life (eukaryote vs prokaryote). Since Woese’s revolution, the Tree of Life (ToL) has been divided into three domains (Bacteria, Archaea and Eukaryota), yet with unclear relationships. Rooting the ToL then became a problem. Indeed, the question of the origin of eukaryotes is directly related to the location of this root, which also affects the nature of the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA). Several scenarios might explain the origin of the eukaryotic cell: (a) the three domains have an independent origin and directly stemmed from the primordial soup; (b) the three domains stemmed from a simple LUCA, and their evolution proceeded by increasing complexity in eukaryotes; (c) the three domains stemmed from a complex LUCA, and their evolution proceeded by simplification in prokaryotes; (d) eukaryotes originated from a fusion event between an archaeon and a bacterium, the latter being the mitochondrion and their other properties evolving after this event; (e) eukaryotes originated from a fusion event between an archaeon and a bacterium, the result being a proto-eukaryote not yet equipped with a mitochondrion. During the last 15 years, technical advances in phylogenetic methods have relocated many simple organisms higher in the ToL, which means that they are actually secondary simplified. However, even the best evolutionary models are not yet able to address difficult phylogenetic issues, whether at shallow depth or at deep evolutionary times. This raises a fundamental question: does simple always mean ancestral? For the time being, the commonly accepted bacterial root for the ToL (in scenario (b)) is still unproven, so that the current consensus can be traced back to the prejudice of Aristotle’s Great Chain of Beings, in which simple organisms are ancestors of more complex life forms. Indeed, during early evolution, there might have been many independently arising lineages, both before and along LUCA, none of them having left extant descendants. The major bottlenecks that occurred as a result of catastrophic events in Earth’s history (e.g., meteorite impacts or snowball Earth periods) might explain why we only have three domains of Life nowadays. Furthermore, extant lineages coalesce to a LUCA that was not necessarily simple and located at the base of the ToL. Instead, it probably lived much later and was more complex than generally acknowledged. [less ▲]

Belgium, like many European Countries, has a serious challenge in the housing sector. The Federal planning bureau estimates the increase of the population by one million inhabitants by 2030, which represent 600,000 additional family requiring accesses to new housing facilities. There is a significant housing shortage for individual, single parent families, seniors and students. Population ageing (mainly due to increase life expectancy) combined with a constant grow rate of individuals living in collective households, leads to a substantial increase of demand of collective households. Furthermore, the stringent European performance environmental regulations for the building sector require that by 2020, all new construction are zero or nearly zero energy, (equivalent to 15 kWh/m2/year), with 60% efficient on-site coverage by renewable energy. The shortage of vacant land and the increasing energy performance requirements is pushing the idea of urban densification and zero energy construction households. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Why ask a person to answer a problem item, when you a priori know they won’t be able to solve it? It is a waste of time and resources, and you won’t gain any new information; this is both inefficient and ineffective. In contrast, computerized adaptive testing (CAT) is based on the principle that more information can be gained when one tailors the test towards the level of the person being tested. Computational and statistical techniques from item response theory (IRT) and decision theory are combined to implement a test that can behave interactively during the test process and adapts towards the level of the person being tested. The implementation of such a CAT relies on an iterative sequential algorithm that searches the pool of available items (a so-called item bank) for the optimal item to administer based on the current estimate of the person’s level (and optional external constraints). The subsequent response on this item provides new information to update the person’s proficiency estimate. This selection-responding-updating process continues until specified stop criteria have been reached. The consequence of such an adaptive test administration is that you get an individualized tailored test that is more efficient and more effective. Because you have less of a mismatch between the level of the test and the level of the test taker, there is a lesser burden for the latter and a higher precision for the former, and this with fewer items than a traditional fixed item-set test format. Furthermore, because it is computerized and sequential, test performance can be continuously monitored and reported directly after test completion. Item response models come into play to ensure comparable scores of these individual tailored tests by putting them on the same measurement scale and to precalibrate, the psychometric parameters of the items that are part of the item bank on which the sequential iterative algorithm operates. The workshop intends to tackle issues encountered during the setup of a computerized adaptive test, starting from the design towards the actual delivery of a CAT. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Digital textbooks, their recent version, completely new in terms of form and presentation, have risen not only numerous economic or sociological, but also educational and pedagogical issues. Should the digital textbook replace the traditional, printed version? Or do we rather speak of a product altogether different, built on novel principles of subject matter exploitation and shaped according to a teaching philosophy that intensifies activism, interactivity, progression and creativity? We attempt to answer the two above mentioned questions by analyzing three FLE textbooks for A1 level learners. [less ▲]

This paper investigates whether conditional accounting conservatism has informational benefits to financial market participants. Using a large sample of French firms over the period 2001-2014, we report that accounting conservatism improves the firm information environment by providing verifiable information. We specifically document that increases in accounting conservatism are associated with more accurate analyst earnings forecasts, less dispersed forecasts and less volatility in forecast revisions. We also provide evidence that increases in firm accounting conservatism lead to subsequent increases in stock market liquidity, tested on the price impact dimension. Overall, our findings are in line with conservatism being useful to financial markets participants such as financial analysts and investors. [less ▲]

I propose a quick overview of four criteria whose combination delineates, to my opinion, what makes one an Austrian phenomenologist. On the proposed view, you qualify as an Austrian phenomenologist if and only if: 1. you acknowledge the authority of experience, 2. you think that philosophy needs psychological investigations at its basis, 3. you think that description is prior to explanation, and 4. you think that describing a mental state is analyzing it, that is, gaining a clear and distinct apprehension of its components. A current research topic, that is developed in this presentation, is the study of disturbance of circadian hormonal cycles and the secretion of melatonin. Traumatic brain injury is associated to hypopituitarism in up to 10-35% of cases, depending on the dynamic tests used to diagnose hypopituitarism (Valdés-Socin & al 2009, Valdés-Socin & al 2015).Melatonin secretion and hormonal rhythms are severely disturbed in acute TBI patients (Seifman & al. Front Neurol 2014).Light is the primary variable that entrains the main circadian clock in the central nervous system. The retinohypothalamic tract generates an overt 24-hour rhythm. These coordinated outputs are conveyed through to the rest of the body via neuroendocrine (ie melatonin and ACTH-cortisol secretion), autonomic (sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways) and behavioral pathways (feeding, locomotor activity, etc). Finally, we will discuss some recent data connecting light pollution and nocturnal human activity with the metabolic syndrome (chronobesity). This article aims to explore the transition process of informal camps on the French border to a sustainable state, similarly to « ghettoization ». I observe this issue as a result of a securitizationprocess. I started from the assumption that the ethical and cultural dimensions have particular relevance in this process. This issue requires a transversal analysis, of policies and speeches of actors at local, national and international levels. This is a question of integration policies at the local level more than a question of national or European immigration models. I aim to highlight the local the local level relevance, where the integration is primarily implemented, and therefore local and regional context should matter as much as the national model for the analysis of integration (Martiniello, 2013). In Calais, due to the lack of local immigration policies the civilian population has been pushed to react, they started to build temporary camps, this initiative increased the social exclusion. The civil associations gained more relevance and followers by Facebook, what changes the engagement that pass from local to transnational. In Calais the migratory flow and the informal camps called jungles are known since 1999, until May 2014 these camps around the city center possessed temporary vocation, and were destroyed and rebuilt daily. Therefore, this is also a matter of security speeches. The definition of the context as a crisis situation made possible an agreement between the associations and the government, that amidthe destruction of small camps and concentrated all refugees in a single area, 6.1 kilometers from the city. The political decisions concerning the space occupied by these individuals aimed to make them invisible, placing them far from the city and limiting their access to city services, which by consequence led to the construction of a ghetto. When a situation is defined as a crisis, it passes immediately to the state security sphere, where atypical actions, (as border militarization, mass expulsions, police repression), can be employed to protect the «political community» and eliminate the source of the crisis. This means that in a context defined as a crisis, temporality gains an important dimension, as evokes short term solutions, mobilizing more efforts in building urgency camps than in the areas related to integration. On the other hand the temporary camps, while urgent measures will endure and be normalised, becoming durable spaces of exclusion. The originality of this proposal is to discuss how local policy decisions and non-state actors worked together with a system of temporary camps for the implementation of a complex, semi-permanent exclusion system. This is a matter of contextual perception as a crisis situation, which is designed by production of speeches, and will determine the nature and timeliness of actions and political elaborations. The idea of the refugee crisis is then mobilized to justify emergency actions and security policies; such as closing borders, construction and maintenance of camps as an emergency response. [less ▲]
