[less ▲]

Background In recent years, the dietary pattern approach has been used extensively to describe overall eating profiles in populations. In the literature, dietary patterns are often computed by cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). However, PCA does not create distinct groups of individuals with different dietary habits; moreover the choice of the clustering method and of the number of clusters in cluster analysis remains difficult. On the other hand, finite mixture models (FMM) do not have those limitations and have many other advantages. However, they have been rarely used in dietary pattern analysis. Objective The objective of this study was to use FMM to compute dietary patterns based on data from the NESCaV survey (Nutrition, Environment and Cardiovascular Health), a large population-based study carried out between 2007 and 2011among the Greater Region population (N=2298 subjects). Methods A 134-food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intakes. The most appropriate parameterization of the covariance matrix and number of clusters was chosen on the basis of the Bayesian information criterion (BIC). Results Four dietary patterns were determined. A ”non-prudent” and a “prudent” patterns were characterized respectively by non-healthy and healthy food choices. A “breakfast/low alcohol” pattern was characterized by high intakes of food items usually consumed at breakfast. Finally, a “vegetables/dairy products/low carbohydrate” pattern was characterized by low intakes of carbohydrates but high intakes of vegetables, pulses, fruits, animal protein and fat mostly from dairy products. The “non-prudent” pattern was the most prevalent with 34% of the population assigned to this cluster. The “prudent”, “breakfast/low alcohol” and “vegetables/dairy products/low carbohydrate” patterns accounted respectively for 25%, 29% and 19% of the population, respectively. Women, older people and non-smokers followed the “prudent” and “breakfast/low alcohol”, whereas the “non-prudent” and “vegetables/dairy products/low carbohydrate” were more adopted by men and smokers. In addition, the “non-prudent” pattern was associated with higher cardiovascular risk. Conclusion FMM should be considered more often as they do not have limitations encountered with other methods and are not restrictive on cluster geometry. Moreover, this study highlights the need for targeted health promotion campaigns focussing on the benefits of healthy dietary patterns. [less ▲]

Agriculture is the first anthropogenic source of N2O, notably through fertilized croplands. Though, few publications have studied through continuous measurement the N2O emissions in cultivated lands. We conducted this study to assess the effect of farming practices and climate on N2O emissions from a winter wheat crop. The experiment was held in an experimental field in the loamy region in Belgium from March 2016 till crop harvest in August 2016. The N2O fluxes are measured on two nearby parcels in a winter wheat field with restitution of the residues from previous crop. For the past 8 years, one parcel was subjected to a reduced tillage (RT, 10 cm depth) and the other one to a conventional tillage (CT, 25 cm depth). On each parcel, the N2O emissions were assessed with homemade automated closed chambers. Measurement continuity and good temporal resolution (one mean flux every 4 hours) of the system allowed a fine detection and quantification of the emission peaks which usually represent the major part of N2O fluxes. In addition to gas fluxes, soil water content at various depths and surface temperature were measured continuously. Soil samples were taken regularly to determine soil pH, soil organic carbon and nitrogen pools (total, NO3- and NH4+) and study microbial diversity and nitrification/denitrification gene expression. Measurements are still in progress. First results suggested that fluxes were about 3 times larger in the RT parcel than in the CT parcel. Several emissions peaks were observed during the measurement period. The peaks occurred after fertilization events and seemed to be triggered by an elevation of soil water content. A comparison of the emissions between RT and CT and a discussion on peak temporal dynamics, focusing on their intensity, duration and starting time will be presented. [less ▲]

Recent experimental and theoretical calculations point to a complex interplay between the electron and phonon baths in a wide variety of materials [1,2]. We propose a method of coupling the Boltzmann equations for the electron and phonon baths within the relaxation time approximation which we use to calculate the thermoelectric transport coefficients. Our model for the coupled Boltzmann Equation solver includes analytic models, including ${\bf k \cdot p}$ Hamiltonians and tight-binding Hamiltonians, for both the electron and phonon energies and analytic models for the electron and phonon relaxation mechanisms. From these calculations we hope to better understand the role and interplay of electron-phonon and phonon-phonon interactions on the thermoelectric transport coefficients. [1] - Phys. Rev. [less ▲]

This work addresses the problem of jointly designing and pricing intermodal freight services during a medium-term planning horizon. Given the innate hierarchy in the problem, a bilevel program is considered where, at the upper level, an intermodal service provider seeks to maximize his profit through selecting the frequencies of his services and their associated prices, while at the lower level, target shipper firms choose to send their demands among the offered intermodal itineraries and the always available trucking competition. [less ▲]

Calculations of the vibrational properties of the transition-metal dichalcoginides depend critically on the lattice parameters, symmetries of the underlying system, and the non-local dispersive interaction. Here we present phonon band structure calculations, dielectric tensors, elastic tensors, and Born Effective Charges for the transition-metal dichalcogenides $MoS_2$, $MoSe_2$, $MoTe_2$, $WS_2$, $WSe_2$, $NbS_2$, and $NbSe_2$. We systematically investigate the role of the long-range $e^⁻$-$e^⁻$ interaction, spin-orbit coupling, and pseudo-potential approximation, and highlight their importance on the TMD structural and vibrational properties. We find that the phonon spectrum, calculated with the help of a Grimme's D3 non-local Van der Waals interaction depends strongly on the accuracy of the lattice parameters and slightly on the addition of the non-local Van der Waals interaction in the phonon frequency itself. We also find that the sign of the Born Effective Charges on each atom in the Hexagonal TMDs are the opposite of similarly structured compounds. We explore reasons as to why this occurs. Additionally, our calculation of the dielectric tensor and elastic tensor allow us to describe the mechanical properties of the system which are necessary to know for future device applications.

This paper presents different extensions of the classical GTN damage model implemented in a finite element code. The goal of this study is to assess these extensions for the numerical prediction of failure of a DC01 steel sheet during a single point incremental forming process, after a proper identification of the material parameters. It is shown that the prediction of failure appears too early compared to experimental results. Cracks in timber structural elements lead users to downgrade them, while their influence on the mechanical properties is globally unknown. They are thus disadvantageous and responsible for an underutilization of timber in new constructions. The phenomenon also impacts constructions subjected to transformation or renovation that are most of the time fully replaced, simply because of the ignorance of their bearing capacity. The present paper investigates the influence of cracks on stiffness, by analytical and numerical developments. It proposes a classification of cracks in six types (+ composite types) and models real beams, randomly cracked. It shows that the presence of cracks seems to decrease the stiffness of the beam. However, it is not so obvious to give the most damaging type of crack, among the six proposed. Further investigations will be necessary. [less ▲]

The present study focuses on understanding the dynamic coupling of the several loop components such as the three evaporators having different cooling capacities. This kind of multi-evaporator air-conditioning system has a number of technological barriers that must be overcome. Understanding the behavior of their respective expansion devices and the choice of these latter is also essential to control properly the transient phase and ensure an optimal operation of the air-conditioning system. In order to study the behavior of the loop, step disturbances were simulated on an operating point at medium and high load. The impact of these disturbances on the stability of the supplied cooled air temperature is analyzed for two types of expansion valve. Initial results show that the thermostatic expansion valves can cause instabilities. Furthermore, the electronic expansion valves have to be regulated with an advanced control in order to use their full potential and to try to achieve desired results. [less ▲]

How and through which practices do Ageing Migrant Domestic Workers negotiate their access to social protection across borders? How are these negotiations influenced both by their intersecting gender, race, class, generational standpoints and their transnational family relations? This contribution deals with these questions and focuses on the case of Peruvian and Colombian Ageing Migrant Domestic Workers in the city of Brussels. Such migrants share a paradoxical positioning as they contribute productively and reproductively to the development of their receiving and sending societies but experience a lack of formal and informal social protection on both sides. This analysis first maps through a moving ethnography the practices they use to negotiate their access to Social Protection in the areas of: 1- access to labor, 2- social security entitlement and portability, 4- housing and 3- informal symbolic-practical care. Secondly, it theorizes these practices as an assemblage of social protection that’s simultaneously made out of transnational interpersonal relationships and formal support systems. Thirdly, building from the work of Amelina et al, (2012) Transnational and Intersectional lens are used to analyze how the effectiveness of such assemblage is simultaneously affected by these actor’s gender, race, class and generational positioning within the global reproduction of labor as well as by their transnational family relations. Concluding, it’s argued such assemblage of protection increases ageing migrants’ life chances but reproduces and produces social- inequalities at the local, transnational and global level. This contribution provides a glance at how transnational needs for social protection are negotiated across borders. Furthermore, it’s relevant in a context of increasing human mobility where inequalities in access to social protection emerge as a public transnational social question that is relevant both for academics and policy makers. The purpose of this talk is to present some recent research on the weighted likelihood estimator (WLE) of ability in item response theory (IRT). This estimator is quite commonly used as an alternative to usual maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimators. However, the uestion of providing finite ability estimates was left unsolved and led to some controversy. Recently, Magis and Verhelst (in press) established that the WLE always returns finite values, independently of the IRT model, the number of items, and the item responses. This general result will be briefly outlined. The finiteness of the WLE has straightforward impact within the field of computerized adaptive testing (CAT). One technical and crucial issue in CAT is to accurately estimate the latent ability at the early stages of the adaptive process, when only a few items are available. Currently heuristic adjustments are adviced to avoid infinite estimates with only a few item responses. In this talk it will be highlighted how the use of the WLE throughout the CAT can be a promising and performant approach to solve this issue. [less ▲]

Orange Flowers and Incense to the Glory of the King in the French Festivals of 1622 The communication explores the way in which the festival apparatus establishes a sacred dimension in the ordinary space and time of the city. We consider the immaterial devices of the spectacular apparatus: light, sound, with special attention to the smell, its iconic power and liturgical significance. The study is conducted on the iconographic and textual descriptions of two kind of celebrations which took place during the summer and autumn of 1622 in France: Louis’s triumphal entries following his victories against the Protestant rebels, and the solemnities for canonization of Jesuits Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier, miles of catholic faith between Europe and Asia. In this historical perspective where sacred/secular points converge, these festivals contribute to shape the imago gloriae on the urban space through the ephemeral language of festival and its indelible poli-sensory effect on audience’s memory. A stochastic 3-scale approach is developed to study the thermo-elastic quality factor (Q) of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators. Thermo-elastic damping is one of the major dissipation mechanisms in high-Q micro-resonators, which may have detrimental effects on the quality factor, and has to be predicted accurately. Since material uncertainties are inherent to and unavoidable in MEMS, the effects of those variations have to be considered in the numerical models. To this end, a coupled thermo-mechanical stochastic 3-scale approach is considered. Thermo-mechanical micro-models of poly-silicon materials are used to represent micro-structure realizations. A computational stochastic homogenization procedure is then applied on these statistical volume elements to obtain the probabilistic distribution of the elasticity tensor, thermal expansion and conductivity tensors at the meso-scale. Spatially correlated meso-scale random fields are then generated in order to represent the probabilistic behavior of the homogenized material properties, feeding macro-scale stochastic finite element simulations.

Recent experimental and theoretical calculations point to a complex interplay between the electron and phonon baths in a wide variety of materials [1,2]. We propose a method of coupling the Boltzmann equations for the electron and phonon baths within the relaxation time approximation to describe the changes in the electron and phonon distributions and thus calculate the thermoelectric transport coefficients. Our model for the coupled system will include tight-binding and ${\bf k \cdot p}$ Hamiltonians for both the electron and phonon energies and analytic calculations for the electron and phonon relaxation mechanisms. From these calculations we hope to better understand the role and interplay of electron-phonon and phonon-phonon interactions on the thermoelectric transport coefficients. [1] - Phys. Rev.
