1. Manuscript submitted to Elementa Last year we submitted a manuscript about air-ice CO2 fluxes measured in continuous with a chamber over the ice during INTERICE V experiment. The results show that sea ice shifts from: (i) a sink during ice crystals formation, (ii) a source during ice growth, (iii) return to a sink during ice melt. We attempt to reproduce these fluxes with the 1Dimension model developed by Martin and Sebastien in Moreau et al. (2015). The inversion between outward CO2 fluxes during ice growth and inward CO2 fluxes during ice melt depicts well the observations. However, the model strongly underestimates the fluxes during the cold phase if the formation rate of gas bubbles is low. Since ice is permeable throughout the cold phase, higher gas bubble formation rates lead to higher CO2 fluxes. The contribution of gas bubble buoyancy to upward flux was the main hypothesis of this manuscript. 2. TA-DIC compilation With the code developed by Martin (and others), we computed profile of DIC normalized to the mean ice salinity. We observe a reverse C shape with a depletion at the surface and more scattered data at the bottom. It’s striking to observe that at mid-depth (0.5 m), all data sounds to converge at the same value (around 480 µmol/kg). It makes us confident with the fact that we can gather data and compare them. The mean DIC value in the middle of the cores is similar to the sea surface water DIC in Antarctica. Our idea is that these value are due to simple brine rejection and that there is a depletion at the top and at the bottom. The bottom depletion is subject to biogeochemistry processes. While the top depletion may be due to the CO2 release during ice formation which lead to a potential CO2 flux out of the ice. For the time beeing, we aim to derive a budget of CO2 flux from this compilation. This will be presented at the next BEPSII meeting. 3. In this paper, we consider a regression model in which the tail of the conditional distribution of the response can be approximated by a Generalized Pareto distribution. Our model is based on a semiparametric single-index assumption on the conditional tail index while no further assumption on the conditional scale parameter is made. The underlying dimension reduction assumption allows the procedure to be of prime interest in the case where the dimension of the covariates is high, in which case the purely nonparametric techniques fail while the purely parametric one are too rough to correctly fit to the data. We propose an iterative algorithm in order to perform their practical implementation. Our results are supported by some simulations. Most often data from psychological, educational or medical research are collected by administering questionnaires to the participants. Such questionnaires are usually made of the same set of items (i.e. questions) and are designed to precisely target the studied latent trait: this is referred to as "linear testing". However, linear testing can be counterproductive in some specific situations. For instance, not all items can accurately target the latent trait (e.g., "easy" items are not informative for "highly able" participants), so that the duration of the test can be uselessly extended. Adaptive testing is an emerging paradigm that aims at selecting and administering each item on the basis of previously selected items and the responses of the participants. The selectuion of the item is made optimally so that the most informative item for the respondent is chosen. This permits, among others, to better target the true latent trait to be estimated, shortening then the test duration. In this talk, linear and adaptive testing will be sketched from an educational testing approach. Then, selected examples from the psychological, educational and medical litterature will be briefly reviewed to illustrate the potentially usefulness of adaptive testing. Pros and cons of this method will also be outlined. [less ▲]

We derive a markovian master equation for the internal dynamics of an ensemble of two-level atoms including the quantization of their motion. Our equation provides a unifying picture of the effects of recoil and indistinguishability of atoms beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime on both their dissipative and conservative dynamics. We give general expressions for the decay rates and the dipole-dipole shifts for any motional states, generalizing those in Ref. [1]. We find closed-form formulas for a number of relevant states (gaussian states, Fock states and thermal states). In particular, we show that dipole-dipole interactions and cooperative photon emission [2] can be modulated through the external state of motion. As an application of our general formalism, we study the spatial Pauli blocking of two fermionic atoms beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime [3]. [1] G. S. We investigate multiqubit permutation-symmetric states with maxi- mally mixed reduced density matrices in the symmetric subspace [1]. Such states can be viewed as particular spin states, namely anticoher- ent spin states [2]. Using the Majorana representation of spin states in terms of points on the unit sphere [3], we analyze the consequences of degeneracies of the Majorana points and of a point-group symmetry in their arrangement on the existence of anticoherent spin states. We provide different characterizations of anticoherence and establish a link between point symmetries, anticoherence, and SLOCC classes [4]. We consider in detail the case of small numbers of qubits and solve the 4-qubit case completely by identifying and characterizing all 4-qubit anticoherent states. [1] D. Baguette, T. Bastin, and J. The conference is an initiative of the GERPHAU lab, research group for Philosophy, Architecture, Urban (Architecture School of Paris La Villette, UMR 7218 CNRS-Lavue), in partnership with Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine and philAU (a scientific thematic network : Philosophy, Architecture, Urban). This conference is also supported by ARENA(Architectural Research in Europe Network Association), a shared platform that aims to promote, support, develop and disseminate high-quality research in all fields of architecture in the widest sense. The proposal of the conference AT THE TURN OF THE EXPERIENCE is to start with the hypothesis that the architecture could be conceive as a way of enquiring on this new experience of the world. Because it provides precisely access to the experience modalities of the building world, we argue that it could in return reveal such a processing paradigm shift in the making of human settlements. We invite to re-invest and re-question its representation apparatus that it used to deploy on territories in order to translate in fictions and projects what these ones could become. To discuss about these apparatus just as such these possible translations, the conference is addressed to all researchers and practitioners, architects and creators, the experienced ones and the experiencing ones as well, whose works attempt to question what we build and to share what we face. Despite the numerous studies on gay families, the current literature that has focused specifically on gay adoptive parent families remains rather limited. In Europe the laws on adoption by same-sex couples change radically from a country to another one. That’s why the experience of these families can be very different according to their country of residence. What are the main stressors that gay adoptive parents have to face? What are the strategies of coping built by these families? This exploratory research examines the stressors and the coping strategies of 18 gay adoptive families (12 from France, 6 from Belgium) with children aged from 3 to 10. Participants were recruited via adoption agencies. Belgian parents adopted their children through national full joint adoption. Conversely, French participants became parents through international adoption as “single parents” (even if they were in a relationship, just one of the partners was legally involved in the adoption). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents. Using grounded theory methods, analyses revealed that parents face different stressors such as the homophobia by social workers, the lack of support by families of origin and social context, the afraid of not being considered parents "like the others" and the worry about discrimination of their children. In the French sample, these stressors were increased by a long procedure in which the “legal parent” had to lie about his sexual orientation and the other parent had to hide himself in order to assure the success of the adoption procedure. This can have a negative impact on the couple's relationship, on the feeling of legitimacy about parental role, in the relationship with the child and with the extended family. To cope with these stressors, many adaptive strategies have proved to be useful: don’t hide the sexual orientation to the children, join adoption associations, share experiences with other gay parents, take care of the couple relationship, being in touch with accepting people and protect themselves from discriminatory people. This comparison between Belgian and French families’ experience allows us to understand the impact of the legal status on the life of gay parents and their children. [less ▲]

The pineal gland, melatonin, and the regulation of hormonal rhythms Dr. H Valdés-Socin. Head of clinic. Department of Endocrinology. CHU de Liège The pineal gland is known by Anatomists since the middle ages. Andrea Vesalius described it in the chap VII of his monumental book "De humani corporis fabrica (1555)". René Descartes had the intuition that the pineal gland is a "third eye" and that is how his illustrator Florent Schuyl represented it in figure 34 of Descartes book "De Homine" (1662). As for the artists, some of them illustrated from their paintings some craniotomies in which the surgeon performs the extraction of the stone of madness. Thus, "the extraction of the stone of madness" from Pieter Huys, is exposed in the Museum of the Périgord (1561). Jan Sanders showed the same subject in his painting "The surgeon" (1550) exhibited in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. During the 20th century the anatomy and the physiology of the pineal gland will be revisited: it appears so that the pinealocytes are in close relationship to the photoreceptors. In certain animal species (birds, reptiles) the pinealocytes are also photosensitive: their pineal gland is directly sensitive to light. In addition, in humans, the pinealoblastomes may occur related to the "trilateral retinoblastoma syndrome" caused by mutations in the RB1 gene (13q14.2) (Plowman & al Clin Oncol 2004). These patients present with retinoblastoma in both eyes but also in the pineal. This only strengthens the intuition of Descartes as the pineal as a "third eye". As for the genetic and hereditary aspect, we had the opportunity as well as other authors, to describe the family presentation of pineal lesions with hypersecretion of melatonin (Allouch & al 2002). With the greater availability of Radiology and brain scans, it was discovered with interest that the pineal gland is often calcified. This calcification can be observed since the second decade of life. It is not yet established if the pineal gland should be considered a"stone of madness " however it is a sort of “cerebral lithiasis”. Indeed, during this oral presentation, we will show some data linking the pineal gland and the light to seasonal depression. "Folly" induced by the long winter nights can be prevented from light therapy treatment. Severe head trauma is associated to Hypopituitarism up to 10-35% of cases, depending on the dynamic tests used to diagnose hypopituitarism (Valdés-Socin & al 2009, Valdés-Socin & al 2015). A current research topic is the study of disturbance of circadian hormonal cycles and secretion of melatonin. The secretion of melatonin occurs at night, and its synthesis is made in the pineal gland and then discharged to the general circulation. However, there is a quantitatively most important melatonin production at the level of the digestive tract. This melatonin would have essentially a paracrine effect. The administration of melatonin in humans results in variable pharmacokinetics due to its hepatic metabolism and its urinary excretion. Membrane melatonin MT1 and MT2 receptors use G proteins transduction. They are distributed mainly in the CNS at the level of the retina, hypothalamic nuclei and the pineal gland. They are also found in the periphery and in endocrine glands. A third melatonin receptor or MT3 is intracellular: this is the quinone reductase enzyme that has an important role in protection against oxidative stress (Lucchetti & al FASEB 2010). A current research topic is the role of a variant MT2 receptor (Variant rs 10830963) in diabetology. Patients harbouring this variant has been shown to have a a decrease in the early phase of insulin secretion(Langenberg & al Diabetologia 2009), and have a higher fasting morning glycemia, and consequently, an increased risk of developing a type 2 diabetes. These findings were demonstrated in a meta-analysis involving 170 000 patients (Mao & al PLOS one 2012). The same variant has been identified in patients at risk of developing glucose intolerance and gestational diabetes (al Diabetologia 2012, Liao, Walford & al PLO one 2012) Melatonin is synthesized in the pineal gland from the conversion of tryptophan to serotonin. Enzymes such as alkylamine N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and of acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase (ASMT) ensure the synthesis of melatonin from serotonin. Apart from melatonin which can be prescribed as such in Belgium, there are synthetic analogs of melatonin such as CIRCADIN. AGOMELATONINE is available in France (lab SERVIER). VALDOXAN is a structural analogue of melatonin developed as a sedative antidepressant daily, which must be taken at sunset. It is a MT1 and MT2 melatonin receptor agonist and antagonist of the serotonin 5HT2C receptors. We can also mention RAMELTEON (TAKEDA lab), which is registered as an hypnotic. Références B Claustrat. In the last 20 years, germanophone literature has displayed an increasing postcolonial sensibility regarding the representation of European colonial past and the literary creation of the colonized Other as well as the general representation of cultural foreigness. Contemporary germanophone literature is, it seems, more and more interested in breaking and productively dealing with colonial stereotypes such as the figure of the natural, barbaric, irrational, passive colonized Other as opposed to the one of the civilized and civilizing, rational, active and colonizing European. Binary categories between the Other and the Self are increasingly challenged and replaced by more balanced representations of cultural and intracultural diversities and hybridities. Irony, figures of inversion and polyphony take an important part in this postcolonial remapping of European colonial entanglement. At the same time postcolonial germanophone literature displays a growing preoccupation with the question of how to represent voices of the Other and how to insert other perspectives into the texts; with all the problems of legitimization that come along with it. Nevertheless it seems as if all this postcolonial sensibility fails utterly when it comes to the representation of European and non-European women in colonial and postcolonial contexts who are represented in rather conventional ways. Clichés such as the voluptuous, oversexualized and dangerous African woman as opposed to the pure and motherly white woman who guarantees European progeny and prevents male going native are still recurrent in otherwise subversive texts. But, at first sight, both European and non-European female figures remain conspicuously silent. The talk focuses on three contemporary germanophone novels, Urs Widmers "Im Kongo" (1996), Alex Capus’ "Eine Frage der Zeit" (2007) and Lukas Bärfuss’ "Hundert Tage" (2008), and examine the breaking and remaking of colonial stereotypes regarding the representation of their female figures. The European scientific world was deeply affected by the Great War. Most links between academics were disrupted, and scholars gathered in two opposing groups. “Cultural demobilization” was a difficult process. Until the middle of the 1920s, institutions would impose a “boycott” on the adversary camp, and few dared to transgress or ignore this. Taking the example of the historians, the conference will evoke the controversies caused by the renewal of scientific relations in Germany, in France and in Belgium. The efforts for the rebuilding of a common intellectual horizon were again frustrated by the rise of the Nazis in 1933. [less ▲]

One day walk Within my research I’m trying to find methods and tools to trace, unveil and map social & ecological values of built heritage in rural areas. In this contribution I’d like to discuss one of the methods I developed namely ‘A protocol for walking.’ The approach focuses on thinking through walking and drawing rather than an attempt to directly resolve or structure a problem. It aims at triggering curiosity not necessarily resulting in a solution or a conclusion while following a non-linear path. Walking acts like a starting trigger to investigate the cultural landscape and aims at generating and facilitating a thought process. It is therefore a way of reflecting. While walking, the act of watching closely can lead to real closeness and might help to gain insight into people’s and other living creatures attitudes, value system, concerns, motivations, aspirations, culture and behaviours and their interaction with space. As one needs the sharp eye to discover even the most trusted things, the act of drawing while walking becomes a way of observing. The drawing turns into a tool for the eye and makes one seeing things differently. The essential concept in this methodology is to approach the problem in an indirect way by postponing the problem. This is a way of tackling the uncertainty of the ‘ill-defined’ nature of the problem statement as values and significances cannot easily or clearly be defined. [less ▲]

Abstract The mass movement, and especially the instability of the soil and rocks, play a significant role in the changing aspect and the evolution of the landscape worldwide and particularly in tropical region. In Central Africa the landslides and others kind of instabilities are very frequent, important and represent a real threat for both population and economy. The case of Rwanda is remarkable, this country which is known as the country of thousand hills, is rich of various and very complex morphology caracterized by very steep slopes crossed by a dense network of watercourse, powered by a considerable amount of precipitation distributed in two wet seasons. The growing economy of the country brings a lot of project of infrastructures and mines and quarries exploitation (embankments and cuttings) which have a strong impact on the triggering of huge instabilities and so the modification of landscape. These instabilities and the intense activity of the rivers and streams could be considered as the engine who control the shaping and the remodeling of the landform. To understand the evolution process of these instabilities, and then the landscape change we started by the mapping of the instabilities using satellite images and then we went on the field to validate the inventory to identify the morphological aspect of the terrain, to refine our knowledge of the geological nature of the materials by sedimentological analyses on selected samples, and of course to try to better know the impact of the rock's weathering process leading to the constant modification of the landform. The computer-based quantitative analyses using GIS's data processing, were carried out to help to understand the distribution of the instabilities and the geomorphological phenomena observed to better connect and explain the whole information collected. The aim of the study is to bring in more than the mapping of instabilities a response about the process and the evolution of the instabilities and the factors impacting the phenomenon. [less ▲]

The southern region of Belgium (Wallonia) has been selected by the European Commission to be a bioeconomic “model demonstrator region”. This designation ensures adequate financial support for the development of production of sustainable chemicals. At the University of Liège, the Laboratory of Biological and Industrial Chemistry, which is recognized as a Center of Excellence in Biorefining and Green Technologies, is engaged in R&D with a strong partnership with the industrial sector. With unique pilot facilities, this Laboratory is able to perform prototyping and demonstration for the conversion of an array of biomasses. Local raw (lignocellulosic) materials are emphasized. This talk will describe two specific topics developed in our laboratory, from fundamentals to industrial applications. Lignin: toward high-value-added applications (Ir. Thomas Berchem) Lignin, the most abundant natural aromatic biopolymer, demonstrates high added value potential as an alternative to fossil resources for the production of a wide range of bioproducts and molecules for the chemical sector because of its unique aromatic structure. In Wallonia, two providers of lignins have been identified: the pulping industry and the agricultural sector (mostly as by-products from cereals). Profitable applications of lignins were few in Belgium before 2010 and development of new technologies were needed to exploit the full potential of this promising resource. Several projects led by our Laboratory and aiming to extract and upgrade lignin in high-value-added industrial applications (surface active agents, electric dispersants, components for waterproofing membranes, flame retardants, etc.) are proposed herein. These projects are strongly supported by grants from the Belgian chemical sector. Production of furan-based compounds for the plastics industry (Ir. Thibaut Istasse) Belgium is world-class innovator for chemicals and plastics. It is notably innovative in the production of bioplastics, mostly for packaging). Combined with strong European regulations (e.g. REACh), the substitution of some petrochemical-based monomers by biobased alternatives is strongly favored. In this context, the production of furans derivatives is studied starting from several local biomasses. In particular, our Laboratory has emphasized the potential of hydrothermal treatments and aqueous acid-catalyzed processes as key industrial steps for an economically viable production of these furanic platform chemicals. [less ▲]
