Gate (Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission), based on Monte Carlo methods allows simulation of full PET-acquisition processes. Gate results for one of CRC’s tomographs, the HR+, are in good agreement with real data, with a maximum mean difference of 6%. Monte Carlo simulations are highly CPU-consuming, so we had to parallelize simulations on the recently setup cluster. In order to use Gate properly on the cluster, the optimal number of CPU was determined. We studied the performances of the small animal microPET FOCUS 120 in terms of counting rate capability (NECR index) for comparison with future simulated results. [less ▲]

Expanded Metal is a second product made from metal sheet by first cuttings, cold-drawing, and finally by being flattened. A research is under way at University of Liege with the aims at determining the mechanical properties of this type of material under seismic excitations. In view of their application to building seismic retrofitting and upgrading, three approaches: analytical models, numerical simulations and experimental investigations, have been used to characterize the mechanic behavior of expanded metal sheets which are monotonically and cyclically loaded in shear. Nonlinear numerical simulations and experimental tests are used to determine the hysteretic behavior of expanded metal shear panels (EMSP), and an analytical model is then proposed, with the aims of using that to study the influence of such EMSP when they are used to retrofit and upgrade reinforced concrete moment resisting frames (RC-MRF). Many RC-MRF are then designed in two cases: (1) in accordance with only Eurocode 2 and (2) in accordance with both Eurocode 2 and Eurocode 8. Capacities of such designed structures are evaluated by using nonlinear static analysis (Pushover) and nonlinear time history analysis under different types of soils and ground motions. The efficiency of using EMSP is evaluated in terms of strength, stiffness and energy dissipation. Additionally, with the presence of EMSP, some unfavorable behavior of RC-MRF under seismic action such as soft story mechanism can be prevented. [less ▲]

Electrical resistivity tomography is a geophysical method widely used for salt water intrusion studies, thanks to its ability to detect salinity contrasts. In this context, boreholes are often available to improve the interpretation of inverted models. The main objective of this study is to incorporate a priori information contained in borehole data to constrain the geophysical inversion with a geostatistical constraint based on the variogram. A synthetic benchmark showed that the choice of the prior model played a great role in the inversion process, especially in low sensitivity zones. The use of simulations conditioned with borehole data costs a lot of time because it is necessary to run several inversions to obtain a mean solution. The methodology was applied to artificial salt water infiltrations in the Westhoek nature reserve. In this case, a homogeneous prior model deduced from borehole data seemed judicious. Inversion results enabled to determine the extension of the salt water plume laterally, in depth, but also in terms of total dissolved solid content (TDS). These observations are in agreement with the hydrogeological situation of the site. A comparison with borehole data showed that the results are much more satisfying than a traditional smoothness constraint used as a regularization tool. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

A HD0L system is a 5-tuple G = (∆, Γ, f, g, w) where • ∆ and Γ are alphabet; • f : ∆^∗ → ∆^∗ is a morphism; • g : ∆^∗ → Γ^∗ is a morphism; • w is a finite word over ∆. If w is a prefix of f(w) and if g(f ... [more ▼]

A HD0L system is a 5-tuple G = (∆, Γ, f, g, w) where • ∆ and Γ are alphabet; • f : ∆^∗ → ∆^∗ is a morphism; • g : ∆^∗ → Γ^∗ is a morphism; • w is a finite word over ∆. If w is a prefix of f(w) and if g(f^ω(w)) is an infinite word over Γ, where f^ω(w) denotes the limit lim_{n→+∞}f^n(w), then we define the infinite word generated by G to be ω(G) = g(f^ω(w)). The question is to decide whether the infinite word ω(G) is ultimately periodic. This open problem is called the HD0L periodicity problem. It is not hard to see that we may assume that w is a letter. Furthermore, it is well known that we can assume that f is a non-erasing morphism and g is a coding. Therefore we will always consider that all these additional hypotheses hold. On the one hand, if f is uniform of length b, then ω(G) is b-automatic. In that particular case the problem is known to be decidable. Various proofs of this result have been given by several authors. On the other hand, in the general case, when f is not necessarily uniform, ω(G) is S-automatic for some abstract numeration system S. Therefore the HD0L periodicity problem is equivalent to the following problem involving numeration systems. Given an abstract numeration system S, is it decidable whether an S-recognizable set X ⊆ N is ultimately periodic? The numeration language L and the set X are given through DFAs accepting L and rep_S(X) respectively. Thanks to this numeration point of view, we can give decision procedures for large classes of numeration systems. In this talk, I will discuss some techniques used to provide such decision procedures. [less ▲]

Being European interregional strategy towards the CAN, traduced (among others) by the encouragement of Latin-America integration, this research wonders about the nature of the EU’s actions for satisfying this ambition, their degree of influence and their efficiency in this goal. The working hypothesis is that the EU’s interregional strategy, of stimulation of Latin American integration, has evolved. It has moved from an idealized vision of total integration for ACN (at every level) towards a complex and pragmatic approach. This approach is complex in that it advances in two ways. Politically the EU- ACN relations are region-to-region. Economically, they become into a region-to-country dialogue. The result of the Trade Agreement EU – ACN, witnesses of that. Taking into account these results and entirely adhering to the assertion “interregionalism, as practiced by the EU, has the purpose of building and consolidating regional orders, whereas the US regional activities rather have the purpose of preventing strong regional formations to grow” (Hetnne, 2007), we demonstrate that the European interregional behavior gets comparable to the US one. It has Americanized. This Americanization implicates a triangular relationship among EU, ACN and US. It affects not only the characteristics of Latin-American integration but also the European approach to its own initiatives of stimulation of this phenomenon. It has given place to a combination of interregional strategies that we have called “complex interregionalism”. This name has been given to this phenomenon because it combines two kinds of interregionalism (pure and hybrid one) simultaneously. This intervention is divided in two main parts and a conclusion. 1. The first part concerns the introduction of the concepts of pure and hybrid interregionalism. 2. The second part concerns, the European interregional strategy. It is presented and compared to the US’ towards ACN. By this contrasting exercise, a double and complex EU’s interregional behavior is verified. It is a region-to-region political dialogue and region-to-country economical one. The results of the negotiation of the Free Trade Agreement EU-ACN are used as the illustration of this statement. In fact, this treaty, at the beginning conceived to stimulate ACN regional integration, became a factor of erosion of the Andean unity. It permits to identify an Americanization de facto of the European interregional strategy. 3. Conclusions. This conclusion part is sub-divided in two. First, we present the conclusions about the complex interregionalism of EU towards ACN. Second, we open a discussion about the deep reasons of the European interregional behavior. The objectives of the two European approaches to the ACN strategy of integration. Has it been imposed by the international needs? by the necessity of building other regions as valuable interlocutors? or by the commitment to development ? [less ▲]
