Although alcoholism is one of the most common forms of addiction, its neurobiological mechanisms still remain unclear. The reinforcing properties of ethanol are mediated by the interaction of multiple neurotransmitter systems, including dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, GABA, endogenous opioids and endocannabinoids. Additionally, long term changes in these neurotransmitter systems are believed to promote the development of alcoholism, probably through specific alterations of brain regions involved in motivation. In humans, it has been clearly demonstrated that alcohol dependence is a genetically heritable disease, at least to some extent. Twin and adoptions studies indicate that 50-60% of the phenotypic variations in alcohol dependence are accounted for by a genetic component. Among the multiple genes that are possibly involved in the development of alcohol dependence and addiction, there is very strong evidence that genes related to the metabolism of ethanol play a major role. For example, genetic polymorphisms in alcohol and aldehyde dehydrogenase enzymes strongly affect alcoholism susceptibility in humans. In recent years, several studies have also provided evidence that acetaldehyde, the first metabolite of ethanol, contributes to alcohol abuse and alcoholism. In rodents such as rats and mice, low doses of brain acetaldehyde induce reinforcing and stimulant effects, although high concentrations of peripheral blood acetaldehyde produce adverse reactions. These results led to the controversial theory that acetaldehyde mediates or at least contributes to the reinforcing and addictive properties of ethanol. [less ▲]

Uncertainty is one of the contingency factors examined by previous studies on management control systems design. However, its role remains unclear. This paper presents the results of an empirical study, which shows that perceived uncertainty more intervenes to explain the of informal management control mechanisms and the interactive use of formal management control systems than to explain the nature of the latter. This paper presents the advantages of a strong coupled formulation to model the electro-mechanical coupling appearing in MEMS. The classical modeling approach is to use a staggered methodology iterating between two different programs to obtain the solution of the coupled problem. In this research a strong coupled formulation is proposed and a tangent stiffness matrix of the whole problem is computed. Using this matrix, nonlinear algorithms such as the Riks-Crisfield algorithm may be applied to solve the static nonlinear problem and accurately determine the static pull-in voltage. Moreover, the natural frequencies may be computed around each equilibrium positions. The dynamic behavior of the structure may also be studied and two new parameters are defined: the dynamic pull-in voltage and the dynamic pull-in time. This strong coupled methodology deriving from variational principle may also be used for topology optimization and extended finite elements. [less ▲]

The residual error is one of the most used criteria for the choice of regression model. The large majority of the criteria for model selection are also functions of the usual variance estimate for a regression model, as Akaike criterion information [Akaike, 1973] and Mallows’ criterion [Mallows, 1964]. The effectiveness of these criteria to approach the theoretical model is related to the good estimate of the theoretical residual error of the model. This efficiency is often limited by the sample size used for the estimates. The choice of a invalid model can have bad consequences on the objective of the research in particular on the forecasts, interpretations and the conclusions. We studied by Monte Carlo simulation the effects of the data structure on the quality of the residual error obtained in multiple linear regression. The results showed that the estimator is a good estimator when the model is established without selection of variables, but becomes biased when the model results from a selection of variables. Colinearity between the explanatory variables and the index which measure the importance of the variables in the true model do not have an influence on the quality of the estimator. [less ▲]
