[less ▲]

Based on more than twenty case studies of companies coming from four contrasted sectors in terms of ICT penetration, our speech questions the positioning firms adopt concerning the development of an e-business/e-commerce strategy and the influence specific factors may have in this context: the transactions attributes, the business strategy, the trust problematic and the legal framework surrounding the electronic commerce. Studied through a transdisciplinary perspective, these variables allow us to understand the “risk taking rate” companies are ready to bear in the development of an e-commerce strategy as well as to highlight and explain contrasting e-commerce approaches between companies, among others in terms of online offers extended and potential use of protection mechanisms.

[less ▲]

Nowadays, condensing technology is widely used in space heating. This paper presents a model that predicts thermal performance of condensing boilers. The structure of the model is similar to the one of a conventional boiler model with a dry heat exchanger at which a wet heat exchanger is added to simulate the heat recovered by condensation. Tests have been performed on two household 24 kW condensing boilers (gas- and oil-fired boilers). The experimental results are compared to the simulated values. According to the results, the model correctly predicts the thermal efficiency of the boiler. Indeed, predicted values are in good agreement with measured values (if one takes into account the measurements uncertainties). [less ▲]

We present the results of three studies of the Fomalhaut debris disk. First, VLTI/AMBER is used to determine the position angle of the oblate photosphere, and to confirm that the debris disk is in the equatorial plane of its host star. Second, VLTI/VINCI measurements reveal the presence of hot dust in the inner planetary system, producing a small excess of 0.88% ± 0.12% in K band. Finally, KIN observations give additional constraints on the nature of the excess. A marginal circumstellar excess is detected at 10 µm, which we use to model the properties of the exozodiacal disk. We estimate the amount of exozodiacal light that can be tolerated around nearby main sequence stars without jeopardizing the detection of Earth-like exoplanets (exoEarths) with a space-based visible coronagraph or mid-infrared interferometer. We also address the possible effects of resonant structures in exozodis. We then review the sensitivity of ground-based interferometric instruments to exozodiacal disks. We show that the current performances are not sufficient to help prepare future exoEarth imaging missions, and discuss how new ground- or space-based instruments could improve the current sensitivity to exozodiacal disks down to a suitable level. Differential item functioning (DIF) has received increasing focus in the past decades. Recently, Magis and De Boeck (2010) proposed to identify differentially functioning items as outliers in a one-dimensional space of DIF measures, using robust statistical tools for outlier identification. The purpose of this talk is to present an extension of this approach for the case of more than one focal group. In this multiple group framework, items can be characterized by multiple vectors of DIF measures, one for each focal group, so that a multivariate DIF space is obtained. DIF items can then be identified as outliers in this multivariate space, based on robust multivariate estimators of location and dispersion. The MCD (Minimum Covariance Determinant) estimator is shown to be adequate for this purpose. A major asset of the method that it can rely on existing DIF indices to define the DIF vectors, and that it does not need a purification step. Alternatively, it can be used to determine on an anchor set. The method will be illustrated by an example about calculator effects on mathematics test items. [less ▲]

A new "self-calibrated" statistical analysis method has been developed for reducing nulling interferometry data. The idea is to use the statistical distributions of the fluctuating null depths and beam intensities to retrieve the astrophysical null depth (or equivalently the object's visibility) in the presence of fast instrumental fluctuations. The approach yields an accuracy much better (at least ten times) than is presently possible with standard data reduction methods, because the null depth accuracy is no longer limited by the magnitude of the phase and intensity errors but by uncertainties on their probability distributions. This approach was tested on the sky with the two-aperture fiber nulling instrument mounted on the Palomar Hale telescope. Using our new data analysis approach alone - and no observations of calibrators - , we find that astrophysical null depths lower than 0.001 can be reliably measured in the near infrared, with error bars as low as a few 10^-4. This statistical analysis is not specific to our instrument and may be applicable to other interferometers. Therefore I'll also present the application of this method to the measurement of Cepheids angular diameters at the VLTI with a sensitivities down to ~60µas. [less ▲]

Logistic regression is a widely used tool designed to model the success probability of a Bernoulli random variable depending on some explanatory variables. A generalization of this bimodal model is the multinomial case where the dependent variable has more than two categories. When these categories are naturally ordered (e.g. in questionnaires where individuals are asked whether they strongly disagree, disagree, are indifferent, agree or strongly agree with a given statement), one speaks about ordered or ordinal logistic regression. The classical technique for estimating the unknown parameters is based on Maximum Likelihood estimation. Maximum Likelihood procedures are however known to be vulnerable to contamination in the data. The lack of robustness of this technique in the simple logistic regression setting has already been investigated in the literature, either by computing breakdown points or influence functions. Robust alternatives have also been constructed for that model. In this talk, the breakdown behavior of the ML-estimation procedure will be considered in the context of ordinal logistic regression. Influence functions will be computed and shown to be unbounded. A robust alternative based on a weighting idea will then be suggested and illustrated on some examples. These influence functions may be used to derive diagnostic measures, as will be illustrated on some examples. Furthermore, breakdown points will also be computed. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Cellulosic bioethanol could be one of the solutions to satisfy the increasing demand in renewable energy. The most limitative problem is the efficiency of cellulose transformation into fermentable sugars. Investigations to select new glycosyl hydrolases are an interesting approach that constitutes a potential opportunity to improve the valorization of lignocellulosic materials. Three major types of glycosyl hydolases are generally produced by organism’s that are able to efficiently use cellulosic compounds: the endoglucanases, the exoglucanases/cellobiohydrolases and the β-glucosidases. In the ability to transform lignocellulosic materials by animals, symbioses are generally observed with a range of micro-organisms including bacteria, protists and/or fungi that largely (or completely) contribute to the production of the needed enzymatic complexes. In termites, such active enzymes are produced in the insect digestive tract, by the termite insect itself or by symbiotic organisms. Within lower termites gut, such as in our model Reticulitermes santonensis (Feytaud), protists and bacteria are associated and involved in a complex symbiotic system. To investigate the respective role of the insect and different groups of symbionts, multidisciplinary “omics” approaches were here developed including proteomics (ESI-LC-MS-MS, 2D-Dige gel coupled with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for protein identification), genomics (with a metagenomic approach based on large cDNA bank construction), metabolomics (LC-MS stragety for carbohydrate degradation product characterization). Moreover, microorganism isolation was used to investigate and characterize glycosyl hydrolases diversity and activity in R. santonensis. The integration of this broad range of “omics” techniques allowed characterizing the role of symbionts in insects in a fundamental approach and to invtigate the chemical ecology of xylophagous insects but also corresponding to an efficient way to promote the selection of efficient enzymatic activities to potentially produce biofuels based on the use of existing lignocellulosic materials.
