[more ▼] A unique statistical data analysis method has been developed for reducing nulling interferometry data. The idea is to make use of the statistical distributions of the fluctuating null depths and beam intensities to retrieve the astrophysical null depth in the presence of fluctuations. The approach yields an accuracy much better than is possible with standard data reduction methods, because the accuracy of the null depth is not limited by the sizes of the phase and intensity errors but by the uncertainties on these errors. The result is an improvement in the instrumental null depth measurement limit of roughly an order of magnitude. We show in this paper that broadband null depths of 10-4 can be measured in the lab with our infrared Fiber Nuller without achromatic phase shifters. On sky results are also dramatically improved, with measured contrasts up to 5 x 10-4 with our instrument mounted on the Hale telescope at the Palomar Observatory. This statistical analysis is not specific to our instrument and may be applicable to other interferometers. [more ▼] The small angular distance (<100 mas) and the huge flux ratio (10^7) between an Earth-like exoplanet in the so-called habitable zone and its host star makes it very difficult to direct image such systems. Nulling interferometry consists of a very powerful technique that combines destructively the light from two or more collectors to dim the starlight and to reveal faint companions in its vicinity. We have developed a new nulling experiment based on the fiber nuller principle (Serabyn et al. 2006 , Martin et al. 2008). This fully symmetric reflective nulling bench aims at testing broadband nulling in both H and K bands as well as characterizing photonic fibers for modal filtering. We present in this paper the design, the development as well as preliminary results of the experiment. [more ▼] Performance comparison between JWST/MIRI and VLT/SPHERE for exoplanet detection Charles Hanot, Olivier Absil, Anthony Boccaletti, Céline Cavarroc, Jean Surdej In the context of exoplanet detection, a large majority of the 400 detected exoplanets have been found by indirect methods. Today, progress in the field of high contrast imaging has allowed direct images of several exoplanetary systems to be taken (cf. HR 8799, Fomalhaut). In the near future, several new instruments are going to dramatically improve our sensitivity to exoplanet detection. Among these, SPHERE ( Spectro Polarimetric High contrast Exoplanet REsearch ) at the VLT and MIRI ( Mid Infra-Red Instrument) onboard JWST will both be equipped with coronagraphs to reveal faint objects in the vicinity of nearby stars. In this paper, we make use of the most recent evolutionary models of young (sub-)stellar objects and exoplanets to derive their luminosities in order to compare the sensitivity of SPHERE to that of MIRI. From this comparison, we present a catalogue of targets which are particularly well suited for MIRI with possible detections of planets down to (sub-)Saturn masses. [more ▼] In a Web 2.0 context, negative user-generated content (UGC) that damages the brand reputation can be easily produced and quickly spread. There is a lack of literature on how to measure the value destruction, known as doppelgänger brand image (DBI). The authors define DBI as the appearance, or reinforcement, of negative associations at the brand reputation level. Brand reputation is the collective brand image that is shared by multiple stakeholders. Using brand concept mapping (BCM) on two corporate brands, this study shows the effect of exposure to negative UGC on the brand image perception and measures the impact of this exposure on DBI. The authors use a two*two between-subjects design with 280 consumers in order to study the effects of the type of media and source credibility, brand experience and Internet experience on the DBI. The results suggest that, the negative UGC will cause an increase in the frequency of mentions of negative associations. At the reputation level, if the brand already has a DBI, an exposure to negative UGC will reinforce it. However, if the brand reputation is mostly positive, a single exposure to negative UGC will not create a DBI. The results also confirm the effect of source credibility and type of media on the likelihood of DBI. The experience with the brand and with Internet will reduce the risk of DBI. [more ▼] The European transport policy has focused on sustainable transport solutions. One of its objectives for freight transport is to restore the balance between modes and to develop intermodality. Among the various types of intermodal transports, this research is concerned with rail-road container terminals embedded in a hub-and–spoke network. These terminals will further be referred to as hubs. Hub-and-spoke networks have been implemented in a number of transportation systems when it is favourable to consolidate and disseminate flows at certain locations called hubs. The efficiency of such a network depends on the location of the hubs. The problem is to find the optimal hub locations and to allocate the remaining nodes to these hubs. This problem is known as the p-hub median problem (p-HMP) where p is the number of hubs to locate. This location-allocation problem is proved to be NP-hard. The time needed to solve it increases as the number of nodes exponent three. Thus, in order to model rail-road transport on the trans-European networks, a subset of nodes that can be considered as good potential locations is needed. We applied the p-HMP to a set of potential locations obtained by both spatial aggregation of demand nodes using hierarchical clustering methods and by a flow-based approach which takes the flows of commodities and their geographic spread into account. They showed that the latest method gives better results and that is why it is retained to determine a set of potential locations. The set of potential locations is used as input for an iterative procedure. One of the main contributions of this research is to propose this iterative procedure based on both the p-HMP and the multi-modal assignment problem. Moreover, the objective function of our p-hub median formulation includes the costs for pre- and post-haulages by road, trans-shipment (according to the number of handled containers into account) and rail haulage. Furthermore, in the p-hub median problem, the total demand is assigned to the hubs. In this research however, the demand can be assigned over all the transportation modes, with the possibility (but not the obligation) of using the trans-shipment facilities. Finally, we presents a methodology able to compare road and rail-road intermodal market areas that takes the network structures, the operation costs and the location of the rail-road terminals into account. This methodology is applied to the optimal configurations obtained by the resolution of the p-HMP and the p-hub centre problem (p-HCP) for the whole trans-European network. Indeed, p-HMP has an efficiency goal by minimizing the total transportation cost. The hub network design obtained by this method can sometimes lead to unsatisfactory results when worst-case origin-destination pairs are separated by a very large distance. Therefore, the p-HCM meets the equity objective by minimizing the maximum cost of a combined transport. [more ▼] The Kou watershed is a geographical space having important water resources, whose are used between: drinking water supply of Bobo-Dioulasso city (Burkina-Faso’s second most important city) and surrounding localities; agriculture through very important irrigated surfaces; industry; fauna and flora preservation, through a minimal sanitary debit guaranteed. Since some decades, one observes more and more increased pressure on Kou water resources. From an agricultural point of view, a comparative visual observation of irrigated surfaces during the years 1980 and during years 2000 shows an increase of surfaces. It would be then appropriate to establish a potential of irrigation of the set of available water resources in order to estimate maximal irrigable surfaces by water resources. Thus, this study has for goal the evaluation of Kou watershed irrigated zones surface, with the help of remote sensing. In order to facilitate irrigated zones detection, the study will focused on the period between January and June, where all cultures are irrigated with Kou watershed surface water and/or groundwater. The chosen methodology is images classification in order to extract irrigated zones surface. We had for this study a set of images and various data: Landsat-4 TM, Landsat-5 TM, Landsat-7 ETM+, SPOT 5, aerial views, agro meteorological data, cartographic data (GIS), data investigation reports, etc. Because of images various origins, we conducted images pretreatment that essentially consisted in image reflectance calibration. This operation appears to be indispensable when working with images from coming different sensors. Classification methods that we used are: a maximum likelihood classification, then a decision tree classification applied to images for which vegetation index (NDVI) has been calculated. The later classification method has been introduced in order to permit a better discrimination between natural vegetation and crops which can often react in similar spectral ranges. This method is based on threshold detection of vegetation classes. Classification methods used allowed us to estimate until a certain point irrigated surfaces, without having, however, a finer information. With 30 m spatial resolution images covering a survey zone with "reduced" to "mean" agricultural lands size, it is sometimes enough difficult to discern natural vegetation pixels from crop pixels. So, we should have considered mixed classes of pixels that strongly skewed our final results. The overall accuracy of our classifications are between 70% and 90%, with Kappa coefficients between 0.4 and 0.85. These Kappa coefficients our results between "tolerable" and "good". However, our evaluations seem to be near enough of those gotten by the means of hydro agricultural inventories led on the same zone. The committed mistakes remain in an interval of +/-20%. [more ▼] This talk addresses some recent extensions of the finite element approach for the analysis, design and control of flexible mechanisms. A particular attention is devoted to modular simulation concepts, advanced time integration methods, efficient sensitivity analysis and topology optimization problems. Practical applications of those techniques can be found in various fields of engineering, e.g. in automotive engineering (vehicle suspensions, powertrains), aerospace engineering (landing gears, flaps, deployable space structures), robotics, machine tools, biomechanics or biomedical instruments. Firstly, an integrated simulation approach will be presented for articulated systems composed of rigid bodies, flexible bodies, kinematic joints, actuators, sensors and control units. I will focus on some numerical aspects concerning the time integration of the equations of motion which have the structure of strongly coupled differential-algebraic equations on a Lie group. The treatment of large rotation variables and the coupling between control state variables and mechanical generalized coordinates will be discussed in more detail. Secondly, based on this simulation tool, a particular class of optimization problems in multibody dynamics will be considered, i.e. the topology optimization of structural components. Generally, topology optimization techniques use simplified quasi-static load cases to mimic the complex dynamic loadings in service. In contrast, I will present an optimization procedure which properly accounts for the actual dynamic interactions which occur during the motion of the flexible multibody system. The method relies on an efficient sensitivity analysis based on a semi-analytical direct differentiation approach. In order to illustrate the benefits of the proposed design approach, the optimization of a two degrees-of-freedom robot arm with flexible truss linkages will be analyzed. Finally, I will discuss some perspectives for the integrated control-structure optimization of multibody systems. [more ▼] Cerebral activity associated with recollection and familiarity in 28 patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and 17 healthy controls was directly measured in an event-related fMRI experiment during performance of a recognition memory task with the process dissociation procedure. Brain regions associated to recollection were evidenced by contrasting activations for inclusion and exclusion conditions whereas brain regions related to familiarity were explored with the mean effect of the two conditions (at P < .05 corrected). Twelve patients had null recollection estimates (AD-), whereas 16 patients did experience some recollection although significantly less than controls (AD+). In AD+ and controls, recollection activated the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC). In contrast, familiarity estimates were equivalent in the 3 groups and were associated with brain activations around the intraparietal sulcus (IPS). Thus, in AD, impaired recollection is related to damage of the PCC whereas preserved familiarity is supported by the IPS.
