The industrial glass fiber process is very sensitive to disturbances as they can lead to fibers break during the extrusion step. To identify and better characterize the relevant underlying physics and the possible causes of fiber break, the glass behavior from the die exit to the winder is investigated numerically. In a first step, simulations of the glass fiber extrusion process are performed where the fluid is considered Newtonian. The full Navier-Stokes equations including the energy equation for the temperature are solved with a finite-element method. The solution is then compared to previous results from the literature. In a second step, we conducted a sensitivity analysis of the key process variables, such as glass height above the tip, viscosity and flow rate at the tip exit, winder velocity... Additionally, the importance of an accurate physical representation of the heat transfers, i.e., conduction within the fiber, radiation of the fiber, and convection around the fiber, is investigated. This model shows very good agreement with cases from the literature. It was found that bushing temperature and fiber environment have a significant impact on forming fiber shape. This demonstrates that numerical simulations can provide a useful tool to adjust the process operating window. [less ▲]

The lecture is subdivided into two parts. The first one deals with the essence of modelling, with the main principles and stages of development. The procedure of model development will be exemplified on the basis of a practical question. During this first part, a number of concepts and parameters that are important for the particular case of ocean carbon cycle modelling are already introduced. In the second part, we further deepen these. We explore the main physical and biogeochemical processes that are important to understand how the carbon cycle operates in the world ocean and provide insight into the way they are represented in different types of models currently used. The work to be presented concerns the modelling of hydro-mechanical behaviour of clayey rocks as encountered in the field of underground nuclear waste storage. For the modelling a two scale finite element (FE2) approach is envisioned, containing a macro-scale model of a poro mechanical continuous medium and a micro-scale model of a representative elementary volume (REV) containing a (discontinuous) microstructure of solid grains and pore space. The difference with classical finite element modelling is the absence of a direct constitutive relation on the macro scale. Instead, for each integration point on the macro level, a REV is modelled on the micro level to numerically derive this relation to be used on the macro level. In this way the constitutive behaviour at the macro-scale is dictated by the global response of the REV that serves as its (numerical) constitutive relation. This constitutive relation can be found by homogenization of the REV. In continuation of the work of Frey [1], [2], a finite element model is developed to model the constitutive relation for the macro level by means of a REV with a microstructure. The microstructure contains elastic, impermeable grains with interface elements to model the intergranular contacts. These interface elements are used for both fluid flow and intergranular cohesive and frictional forces. The hydraulic and mechanical part are coupled by the connectivity of the interfaces itself depending on an equivalent opening between the opposite sides of the interface elements (the grain boundaries). The representation of an actual opening by these interface elements allows deformation and damage to concentrate in the interfaces. Intergranular cohesive forces are modelled by damage laws for normal and tangential displacements of opposite interface sides. By defining different grain geometries and arrangements, different macroscopic responses can be obtained. In this way, complex macroscopic constitutive behaviour can be modelled with very simple interface damage models at the micro level. However, the use of the FE2 method is computationally expensive. The derivation of the consistent tangent stiffness matrix of the global response of the REV is part of this computational expense. In order to overcome a significant part of this computational expense of the method, the idea is to use analytical homogenization to derive the tangent stiffness matrix from the REV instead of more straightforward numerical homogenization. A particular challenge in the application of analytical condensation is to overcome the discontinuous nature of the interface elements that are caused by cohesive forces over the interface opening. Once this is obtained, condensation of the finite element system of equations and the application of the boundary conditions can lead to an analytic solution for the consistent tangent stiffness matrix at the macro scale. For a continuous, solid phase media this condensation method for homogenization is described in [3]. It is the goal to add the coupling with the fluid phase and the cohesive forces to this method of analytic homogenization. In addition to the homogenization, the more straightforward approach to reduce calculation time by parallelization is foreseen. References: [1] Frey, J. This paper introduces an application of the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) to model metal forming processes. The X-FEM is used to account for material interfaces and reduce the meshing constraints due to the shape of the tools and the evolving configuration of the structures. Large deformations and non-linear behaviors are also accounted for, but this contribution focuses in the modeling of frictional conditions on the interface. In X-FEM simulations, the constraint of impenetrability is usually imposed using Lagrange multiplier methods. For such strategies, stabilisation algorithms are needed to prevent the apparition of instabilities due to the introduction of dual unknowns. The strategy presented here proposes to manage the contact using the penalty approach. As it requires no additional variables, it is not submitted to the same kind of instabilities. The contact problem is modeled using integration sub-elements, defined on the boundary of the structure, on which the contact constraints have to be enforced. [less ▲]

Well-defined poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) chains prepared by CMRP (cobalt-mediated radical polymerization) were coupled using an alkyne-functional nitrone via NMRC (nitrone-mediated radical coupling).1 In all the cases, the coupling efficiencies were close to 90% or higher. The polymers mid-chain functionalized with an alkyne group were then reacted with azide-functionalized atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips via copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). As a result, polymers having a double-branch architecture were linked to AFM tips via a short linker. The structure and the molecular parameters of the polymers were determined by NMR and GPC, whereas the ‘click’ step onto AFM tips was assessed by performing the same CuAAC reaction onto macroscopic surfaces and characterizing them by ATR FT-IR. The adhesive properties of these double-branched polymers were studied by AFM single-molecule force spectroscopy. By performing approach-retraction cycles in solution upon a glass surface, the interaction between single PVAc chains and the surface was investigated. The effect of the double-branch architecture on the adhesion forces was under focus. Setting a residence time of the tip on the surface before retraction was found to have a beneficial influence on the adhesion forces. Signs of multiple interactions acting in parallel were detected in the experimental force-distance traces. [less ▲]

Convective drying of two different types of wastewater sludges is investigated. Experiments are realised in a micro-dryer, for air temperatures of 80 °C, 140 °C and 200 °C, the velocity and humidity remaining the same. The product drying kinetics presents, for all studied cases, three main phases, which are: adaptation phase, constant drying rate phase and falling drying rate. A comparison between two mathematical approaches allows determination of the diffusion coefficient. The value of this coefficient depends on the origin of the wastewater sludge and the operating temperatures. Physical changes such as shrinkage are introduced into the mathematical model. [less ▲]

For the last two decades, in a context of combined flexible capitalism and “decentralized legal authoritarianism” (Lee Ching-Kwan, Against the Law), factories of the Pearl River Delta have been witnessing a growing spate of collective actions by rural migrant workers. In this paper the narrative categories and “frames of contention” mobilized by migrant workers in claim-making will be investigated. The focus is put chiefly on two differently mediated genres of narratives, i.e. migrant workers’ narratives in magazines on the one hand, and more recent online written practices centred on the politics of rights and identity on the other hand. Such cultural politics of migrant labour has been insufficiently taken into account when considering the greater right awareness and surge in collective mobilization in China for the last decade. The paper develops the argument that workers’ written practices within magazines help constituting a space for struggle and negotiation around major values, state polities and legislation linked to workers’ rights. Secondly, drawing on the notion of “disorderly media” (Latham), it is argued that some of the online written practices by migrant workers may provide platforms for more radical articulations of the politics of rights and collective mobilization. What are the points of discursive rupture and contention around which processes of reversal, reapropriation, affirmation or euphemization occur? What kinds of material, socioeconomic and political relations do these identification and legitimization processes reveal? These are the questions that will be investigated. A vast body of data are used for this paper, including songs and poems by rural workers, participant observation, in-depth interviews, published and unpublished letters to the editor of several migrants’ magazines, etc. [less ▲]

Vibrothermography (VT) is an active non destructive technique able to detect singularities like delamination, even if the defect internal faces are in contact. Under sonic or ultrasonic mechanical vibrations, a delamination may behave like a heat source principally due to friction between the rubbing faces and/or stress concentration in the area. The present article focuses on the understanding of the underlying phenomenon so-called "local resonances" and its correlation with the presence of temperature peaks observed at certain frequencies. For this purpose, a simplified finite element modal analysis of the delamination model is compared with the heating rate vs. frequency data's acquired by an infrared camera. Then, some conclusive results of sine sweep and chirp testing will be presented and discussed in regards to this theory. [less ▲]

In the standard Bayesian ODE-penalized B-spline approach, it is assumed that the error distribution is homogeneous Gaussian. But, in many applications, the normal assumption for the error distribution is not a realistic choice. The goal of this paper is to extend the standard Bayesian ODE-penalized B-spline approach to settings where the error term distribution can be described using a mixture of normals. [less ▲]

Development of a group B streptococcal vaccine (GBS) vaccine is the most promising approach for the prevention of GBS infections in babies, given the potential adverse effects of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis as well as the need for effective prevention of both adult and late perinatal disease. There are numerous prevention strategies at this time but none are 100% effective in the eradication of neonatal early onset GBS disease and there are no preventative strategies for late onset disease. The need for a GBS vaccine is therefore, of utmost importance. Efforts applying genomics to GBS vaccine development have led to the identification of novel vaccine candidates. The publication of GBS whole genomes coupled with new technologies including multigenome screening and bioinformatics has also allowed researchers to overcome the serotype limitation of earlier vaccine preparations in the search of a universal effective vac- cine against GBS. This review brings together the key arguments concerning the potential need of a GBS vaccine in developed countries and describes the current status with GBS epidemiology and microbiology in these countries [less ▲]
