Expanded Metal is a second product made from metal sheet by first cuttings, cold-drawing, and finally by being flattened. A research is under way at University of Liege with the aims at determining the mechanical properties of this type of material under seismic excitations. In view of their application to building seismic retrofitting and upgrading, three approaches: analytical models, numerical simulations and experimental investigations, have been used to characterize the mechanic behavior of expanded metal sheets which are monotonically and cyclically loaded in shear. Nonlinear numerical simulations and experimental tests are used to determine the hysteretic behavior of expanded metal shear panels (EMSP), and an analytical model is then proposed, with the aims of using that to study the influence of such EMSP when they are used to retrofit and upgrade reinforced concrete moment resisting frames (RC-MRF). Many RC-MRF are then designed in two cases: (1) in accordance with only Eurocode 2 and (2) in accordance with both Eurocode 2 and Eurocode 8. Capacities of such designed structures are evaluated by using nonlinear static analysis (Pushover) and nonlinear time history analysis under different types of soils and ground motions. The efficiency of using EMSP is evaluated in terms of strength, stiffness and energy dissipation. Additionally, with the presence of EMSP, some unfavorable behavior of RC-MRF under seismic action such as soft story mechanism can be prevented. [less ▲]

A HD0L system is a 5-tuple G = (∆, Γ, f, g, w) where • ∆ and Γ are alphabet; • f : ∆^∗ → ∆^∗ is a morphism; • g : ∆^∗ → Γ^∗ is a morphism; • w is a finite word over ∆. If w is a prefix of f(w) and if g(f^ω(w)) is an infinite word over Γ, where f^ω(w) denotes the limit lim_{n→+∞}f^n(w), then we define the infinite word generated by G to be ω(G) = g(f^ω(w)). The question is to decide whether the infinite word ω(G) is ultimately periodic. This open problem is called the HD0L periodicity problem. It is not hard to see that we may assume that w is a letter. Furthermore, it is well known that we can assume that f is a non-erasing morphism and g is a coding. Therefore we will always consider that all these additional hypotheses hold. On the one hand, if f is uniform of length b, then ω(G) is b-automatic. In that particular case the problem is known to be decidable. Various proofs of this result have been given by several authors. On the other hand, in the general case, when f is not necessarily uniform, ω(G) is S-automatic for some abstract numeration system S. Therefore the HD0L periodicity problem is equivalent to the following problem involving numeration systems. Given an abstract numeration system S, is it decidable whether an S-recognizable set X ⊆ N is ultimately periodic? The numeration language L and the set X are given through DFAs accepting L and rep_S(X) respectively. Thanks to this numeration point of view, we can give decision procedures for large classes of numeration systems. In this talk, I will discuss some techniques used to provide such decision procedures. [less ▲]

Electrical characterization by admittance spectroscopy enables the study of interface properties of semiconductor structures such as p-n junctions, Schottky diodes, light-emitting systems, photodiodes, solar cells or quantum well devices. The technique consists in monitoring the complex admittance of the device under test as a function of frequency, applied dc voltage and temperature. This method gives a direct access to the emission-capture processes occurring between an impurity level and the conduction or the valence band and leads to the determination of important electronic properties including the activation energy and the carrier capture cross sections. In the case of organic semiconductors, the field-dependent carrier mobility can be measured as well. However, the interpretation of the admittance curves is straightforward only under restrictive assumptions such as full ionization of the shallow dopant, with a concentration larger than the deep impurity concentration. Numerical simulations, based on the solution of the basic semiconductor equations, allow to carry out a detailed analysis of the steady-state and small-signal electrical characteristics of the systems and thus contribute to a better understanding of the conduction mechanisms and of the microscopic origin of the features in the experimental admittance spectra. In this presentation, the results obtained for different structures are shown in order to illustrate the method. [less ▲]

À l’intérieur de ce texte, vous allez lire deux récits, l’un sur mes réflexions à propos de mon séjour en Amazonie équatorienne, l’autre présentant, en tant qu’exemples, quelques extraits de mon journal de terrain. En mobilisant deux styles différents d’écriture, je veux simplement montrer d’où viennent les envies de travailler sur un sujet, les arguments, les choix, les questions, les modes d’analyse… Dans « Les préalables », nous pouvons lire comment avant d’aller au terrain on s’arme de préjugés, de l’histoire, d’émotions, de catégories, de beaucoup trop de questions et on est censé mettre à l’épreuve certaines compétences. La deuxième partie, « Pendant le terrain : choisir entre participer et observer », c’est pour réfléchir à propos de notes prises dans ma première semaine d’observation (sans intervention) sur le terrain : Comment prendre des notes tout en participant des situations quotidiennes au terrain, comment ces notes m’ont aidé à renoncer à une démarche de recherche comparative et choisir de me concentrer uniquement sur les territoires huaorani. Dans le sous-titre suivant, « Après le terrain : quoi faire avec les données », je vous propose d’aller regarder les données (entretiens, journal de terrain et notes qui m’ont surprise…), poser des questions et envisager les matériels potentiels d’écriture. Finalement dans « Apprenti Sorcier » je réfléchis à propos de la manière dont le travail de terrain nous emporte et pourquoi il faut résister un peu. Il s’agit de ne pas oublier qu’une très grande partie du travail de terrain, avant, durant et après, est marqué par l’émotionnel. [less ▲]

Si les femmes peu diplômées restent aujourd'hui particulièrement exposées au non emploi (sans comparaison avec ce qui se passe pour les hommes dans ce cas), l'ensemble des femmes connait un risque élevé de commencer leur trajectoire professionnelle dans des emplois atypiques et de s'y enliser (significativement beaucoup plus que les hommes).... Prof Charcot, in France, made during the 19th century one of the first descriptions of multiple sclerosis. Since then, several physiopathological links and new treatments have been described for this auto-immune neurological pathology. This presentation is designed for neurologists, but in keeping an endocrine point of view . We emphasize multiple sclerosis connections with the stress axis (ACTH and cortisol hormones), the phosphocalcic metabolism (vitamine D deficit and supplementation) and the somatotropic axis (GH and IGF1 hormones). We review all the multiple sclerosis and neuroendocrine papers published in the English literature until 2010. We further critically analyzes some endocrine links supporting new perspectives of treatment in multiple sclerosis patients.
