In this paper we study estimation of DSGE models. More specifically, in the indirect inference framework, we analyze how critical is the choice of the reduced form model for estimation purposes. As it turns out, simple VAR parameters performs better than commonly used impulse response functions. This can be attributed to the fact that IRF worsen identifica- tion issues for models that are already plagued by that phenomenon. [less ▲]

The aim of this paper is to investigate the long run relationship between the development of banks and stock markets and economic growth. We make use of the Groen and Kleibergen (2003) panel cointegration methodology to test the number of cointegrating vectors among these three variables for 5 developing countries. In addition, we test the direction of potential causality between nancial and economic development. Our results conclude to the existence of a single cointegrating vector between nancial development and growth and of causality going from nancial development to economic growth. We nd little evidence of reverse causation as well as bi-directional causality. [less ▲]

In this article, we evaluate, from the point of view of banks, the potential of articulations between commercial banks and microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cameroun in terms of financing of the rural and the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Furthermore, we seek to define the best form of partnership between the two types of institutions. The results obtained suggest that the articulations between banks and MFIs can potentially be beneficial to all stakeholders (banks, MFIs but also recipients). This study also highlights the fact that these articulations can be even more beneficial if national commercial banks, under the Cameroonian law in our case, participate rather than branches of foreign banking groups. Indeed, our research reveals that through these partnerships, from their cultural proximity and their propensity to take more risks, national commercial banks will more likely offer either directly or indirectly (through MFIs) more adapted financial products and services to both the rural and the MSMEs’ segments. The question of knowing if a better form of partnership between commercial banks and MFIs exists, results suggest that there is no better form of partnership as such; that the best form depends on the MFI’s development stage and that in any case this partnership should privilege a national commercial bank rather than a branch of a foreign bank. Even if the foreign banks’ contest might be necessary at a given stage of the process, the results make it also possible to consider a new model of interactions implying Microfinance investment vehicles and national commercial banks. This model would have the advantage to help mitigate risks that those vehicles perceive when deciding to directly invest in MFIs. [less ▲]

Not a week goes by without hearing about its growth records, its clout in international trade and in raw material consumption, or about the emergence of a middle class, with a consumption level nearing that of the Western world. Classic financial agency theory recommends compensation through stock options rather than shares to induce risk neutrality in otherwise risk averse agents. In an experiment, we find that subjects acting as executives do also take risks that are excessive from the perspective of shareholders if compensated through options. Compensation through restricted company stock reduces the uptake of excessive risks. Even under stock-ownership, however, experimental executives continue to take excessive risks—a result that cannot be accounted for by classic incentive theory. We develop a basic model in which such risk-taking behavior is explained based on a richer array of risk attitudes derived from Prospect Theory. We use the model to derive hypotheses on what may be driving excessive risk taking in the experiment. Testing those hypotheses, we find that most of them are indeed borne out by the data. We thus conclude that a prospect-theory-based model is more apt at explaining risk attitudes under different compensation regimes than traditional principal-agent models grounded in expected utility theory. In a series of experiments conducted in Belgium (Wallonia and Flanders), France and the Netherlands, we compare behavior regarding tax evasion and welfare dodging, with and without information about others’ behavior. Subjects have to decide between a ‘registered’ income, the realization of which will be known to the tax authority for sure, and an ‘unregistered’ income that will only be known with some probability. This unregistered income comes from self-employment in the Tax treatment and from black labor supplementing some unemployment compensation in the Welfare treatment. Subjects have then to decide on whether reporting their income or not, knowing the risk of detection. The results show that (i) individuals evade more in the Welfare treatment than in the Tax treatment; (ii) many subjects choose an option that allows for tax evasion or welfare fraud but report their income honestly anyway; (iii) examples of low compliance tend to increase tax evasion while examples of high compliance exert no influence; (iv) tax evasion is more frequent in France and the Netherlands; Walloons evade taxes less than the Flemish. There is no cross-country difference in welfare dodging. [less ▲]

This research was carried out at Chương Mỹ and Phú Xuyên Districts for two years of 2009 – 2010 by production record keeping system according to a production cycle of 270 poultry flocks at 210 farms and smallholders to aim at better understanding the diversification, technical productivity in this region through an approach of animal production systems and the supply chains with their various constraints. Agricultural by-products are taken full advantage maximum but the daily diet is not balanced in smallholders or commercial farms. Production productivity is good with industrial broilers of ISA Brown, Ai Cập hens and Mix 1. Rate of mortality occupied about 2% with ISA Brown hens, 3% with broiler Mix 1 compared with 15% - 27% of Lương Phượng chickens, CV Super Meat, French Muscovy ducks and backyard production. Poultry production in these zones is really diversified, complex about the races, feed sources and preventive sanitation. But this poultry production is facing grave difficulties such as good quality of DOCs, large fluctuation risk of prices of inputs/outputs and the high risks with epidemic diseases from this year to another. This contribution is aimed at presenting the large research produced in this particular field of international finance that constitute cross-listing —the secondary listing of company’s shares on an overseas exchange. For companies, exchanges and investors, the phenomenon of cross-listing raises different non-trivial questions. This paper reviews the most important research initiatives addressing the economic effects of this important corporate decision. Early studies were drawing much of their argumentation from segmentation theory, concluding that cross-listing was a way for companies to lower barriers to international investment in their stocks, leading to a revaluation of their shares. Equally crucial as segmentation was in the early course of the cross-listing activity, new initiatives are now exploring many additional ways that help to get a better picture of the rationales underpinning the far-reaching effects of cross-listing: valuation impacts and other financial benefits, change in the company’s market profile, and interaction with her home and host markets. Cross-listing is then at a cross-roads of different theories. The advances in academic contributions over the last decade have helped to understand some of the underlying dynamics and rationales surrounding it, but are also leaving some unanswered questions. Let $P$ and $Q$ be two non-zero multiplicatively independent polynomials with coefficients in a finite field $\mathbb{F}$. Adapting a result of R.~Villemaire, we show that multiplication of polynomials is a ternary relation $\{(A,B,C)\in\mathbb{F}[X]\mid A.B=C\}$ definable by a first-order formula in a suitable structure containing both functions $V_P$ and $V_Q$ where $V_A(B)$ is defined as the greatest power of $A$ dividing $B$. Such a result has to be considered in the context of a possible analogue of Cobham's theorem for sets of polynomials whose $P$-expansions are recognized by some finite automaton. [less ▲]

After an in-depth review of the scientific literature dedicated to (small) business failure causes (Crutzen et Van Caillie, 2008), it comes out that mismanagement is, by far, the failure cause which is the most commonly evoked by previous researchers (Argenti, 1976; Wichman, 1983; Newton, 1985; O'Neill and Duker, 1986; Thornhill and Amit, 2003). Nevertheless, the concept of « mismanagement » is relatively vague and large (Bruno et al., 1987; Sheldon, 1994). It is thus now necessary to clarify it if one wants to better understand the causes of small business failure and, in fine, to better prevent this phenomenon (Argenti, 1976). In particular, it is essential to distinguish between the main categories of managerial problems small businesses can be faced to in order to be able to better anticipate their failure (thanks to adequate trainings, for example) and in order to propose adequate remedies to specific managerial problems small distressed firms are confronted to. In this context, the current article identifies, on the basis of two complementary statistical analyses, three specific patterns for badly-managed firms, amongst a sample of 91 small distressed firms. Ever since the creation of the General Court (“GC”), the effectiveness of judicial review in European Union (“EU”) competition cases has sparked intense scholarly debates. This paper seeks to further contribute to this discussion in three ways. First, it devotes some space to fundamental, yet often overlooked questions, such as the goals or functions of judicial review and why judicial review of administrative decisions is important; particularly so in competition law matters. Second, this paper attempts to throw some empirical light on the GC’s judicial review of European Commission (“Commission”) decisions in the field of competition law. Third, it places a specific emphasis on the particular situation of abuse of dominance law, where the GC has exercised its judicial review power with more restraint than in other areas of competition law (such as restrictive agreements and mergers). With these goals in mind, this paper follows a five-stage progression. First, on the basis of a survey of the relevant legal, economic and political science literature, it defines the functions of judicial review and identifies a set of indicators which can be used to assess the performance of the GC’s judicial scrutiny (Part I). Second, it explains why judicial review in EU competition law cases is of critical importance notably given the institutional and procedural deficiencies of the EU enforcement structure (Part II). Third, it discusses the nature and standard of review currently applied by the GC with a particular focus on the degree to which the GC is willing to review “complex economic matters” (Part III). Fourth, it provides some quantitative data on the case-law of the GC to assess whether several goals or functions attributed to judicial review by the scientific literature are met (Part IV). Finally, this paper takes a closer look at the (controversial) case-law of the GC in the field of Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (“TFEU”) (Part V). [less ▲]

[less ▲]

We present a comparative study of the thermal emission of the transiting exoplanets WASP-1b and WASP-2b using the Spitzer Space Telescope. The two planets have very similar masses but suffer different levels of irradiation and are predicted to fall either side of a sharp transition between planets with and without hot stratospheres. WASP-1b is one of the most highly irradiated planets studied to date. We measure planet/star contrast ratios in all four of the IRAC bands for both planets (3.6-8.0um), and our results indicate the presence of a strong temperature inversion in the atmosphere of WASP-1b, particularly apparent at 8um, and no inversion in WASP-2b. In both cases the measured eclipse depths favor models in which incident energy is not redistributed efficiently from the day side to the night side of the planet. We fit the Spitzer light curves simultaneously with the best available radial velocity curves and transit photometry in order to provide updated measurements of system parameters. We do not find significant eccentricity in the orbit of either planet, suggesting that the inflated radius of WASP-1b is unlikely to be the result of tidal heating. Finally, by plotting ratios of secondary eclipse depths at 8um and 4.5um against irradiation for all available planets, we find evidence for a sharp transition in the emission spectra of hot Jupiters at an irradiation level of 2 x 10^9 erg/s/cm^2. We suggest this transition may be due to the presence of TiO in the upper atmospheres of the most strongly irradiated hot Jupiters. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Fair trade (FT) organisations have been quite early taken as examples of social enterprises (SE) and have contributed to the shaping of the SE concept. The goal of this article is to examine more deeply, both at a conceptual and at an empirical level, to what extent FT organisations can be considered as social enterprises. First, we introduce different theoretical frameworks of SE and examine FT in the context of each of these frameworks. In a second step, we use an empirical study on fair trade social enterprises (FTSEs) across four European countries to illustrate and deepen the links between FT and SE, focusing on the goals and the governance structures of FTSEs. It appears that all FTSEs combine in some way economic, social and sometimes also political goals. FTSEs are thus in line with the "hybrid-goal" nature of SEs. FTSEs' governance is also quite specific and often innovative in terms of organisational architecture and stakeholders' involvement. Some FTSEs are closer to the European – participatory – approach of social enterprise, while others are closer to US – individual – approaches. Finally, the governance structures of FTSEs seem to reflect quite well their goal mix. This article provides a more solid basis for the often implicit link between FT and SE. Future researches could use our work to explore specific topics of the SE literature (e.g. stakeholders' involvement) in the context of FT. The FT example could also be used to examine further the shifting boundaries of the SE reality. The originality of this article is to apply the SE concept to a specific field and to show how, within this field, there is at the same time (1) a diversity of organisations, reflecting the diversity of SE approaches and (2) a range of specific features (especially in terms of goal mix and governance) distinguishing SEs from other types of organisations operating in the same field. The growing trade between Europe and the rest of the world and the enlargement of the European Union has led the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy and Transport to fund Worldnet – Worldwide Cargo Flows – within the Framework 6 research project under the Scientific Support to Policies initiative. The main outputs have been an extended freight origin-destination database for the year 2005, extended road and rail networks, and new maritime and air-cargo networks. Moreover, these outputs were developed according to TRANSTOOLS (Tools for TRansport forecasting ANd Scenario testing) specifications. Due to the magnitude of the project and to the consequences that its results could generate in transportation planning at European level, this study assesses the validity of the freight origin-destination matrix. Our analysis indicates multiple problem cases, inconsistencies and aberrations. [less ▲]

In this paper, we investigate the convergence process within the European Union (27 countries). More particularly, we study the convergence process of the new entrants from Central and Eastern Europe and of the 15 Western countries between 1990 and 2007. Applying a panel approach to the convergence equation derived by Mankiw et al. (1992) from the Solow model, we highlight the existence of heterogeneity in the European Union and show that new entrants and former members of the European Union can be seen as belonging to significantly differ- ent groups of convergence. The existence of heterogeneity in the European Union or the Eurozone might affect their stability as the recent Greece’s sovereign debt crisis illustrates it. [less ▲]

n this paper, wee propose a model for regulatory capture that is based on information transmission and asymmetric information. In a three-tier model, a regulator is charged by a political principal to provide a signal for the type of a regulated firm. Only the firm can observe his type and the production of a correlated signal with a given accuracy is costly for the regulator. The firm can costlessly provide an alternative signal of lower accuracy that is presented to the regulator. In a self-enforcing equilibrium, the regulator transmits the firm-produced signal, internalizes its own savings in information cost and the firm enjoys higher information rents. The main feature of soft capture is that it is not based on a reciprocity of favors but on a congruence of interests between the firm and the regulator. [less ▲]

LaTeX is a beautiful programming language. One sometimes wants to write in an easy and quick way various documents, such as letters, papers, reports, theses, and so on. Here, “one” can be a new student, an old professor, or even somebody who is not linked at all with any academic stuff. We often want special constructs in our documents. This is more difficult than basic typesetting, especially using LaTeX when you are not experienced. On one hand, scientists do not always have the time to learn another programming language, especially if they are making a PhD, or doing something else which asks for a lot of time. Using direct and working programming tricks can speed up your productivity, and make you learning better. But where can they be found? On the other hand, everybody wants to make nice documents, if possible. A nicer document attracts the reader. Evidently, “a nice document” is a subjective notion. By “nice document,” we want to speak about a document which 1. is structured in an unambiguous way, and has a clear presentation, 2. is read with pleasure, if possible. The beginner, whoever he is, often faces strange errors because he tries to teach LaTeX to do what he wants it to do. It is difficult to learn the advanced notions about LaTeX, even in an average period of time. The good books have to be found. But that is often the moment where you lack of time and that you are happy to find complete solutions. That is a moment where you tell to yourself “Is there no folk out there to give me such a trivial tip?” but nobody hears it. The aim of this book, is to avoid you these problems: you do not need to write everything from scratch, ask on various forums or Usenet groups, or even read heaps of books just to make a simple script. That is my goal. You can now continue writing your document in LaTeX’s philosophy: concentrating on your document’s content, at the place of its appearence. These reasons justify the presence of this book. I have tried to pack the most useful tricks which can enhance your documents’ content in a concise way. The aim is not to teach LaTeX programming, but to give a quick reference to all the tips and tricks that can be used if you are encountering a (difficult) problem, or simply facing a question which you cannot find the answer to. I consider that the reader is familiar with basic LATEX programming. It can be learnt from various sources (given in this book's bibliography), and many others. I hope this will give you new ideas about advanced ways to typeset text and to make different processes automatic, thus giving you more time for other activities. Many others subjects were added during Fall 2010. [less ▲]

This document is a kind of Math. formula's form. It is majoritarly coming from a volonty of classifying these last so they are easily accessible. Firstly, this document was redacted in order to be prepared to the engineering studies (at ULg). Many sections have been added, and it is equivalent to a first-year Math. course for a scientific (who is not a mathematician). For this reason, the text has not been very developped, so this document is as short (and quick) as possible, with no need to read unnecessary sentences which would slow the reading. Principal sentences have been written, to make links, because Math. is not only formula's: speaking is a very important way to communicate ideas and to link concepts, especially in Sciences. Indeed, it would not suffice to copy formula's to redact a summary. It is important to translate them to French too, to ensure their understanding. The aim of this summary is not to assemble mathematical ``tricks.'' Indeed, it would not suffice to apply these ready-made ``recipes'' to have success with the exercises: it would be so easy, and why would there be Math. teachers? Only few proves will be made, to lighten the document; however, formula's will be admitted. Many different notations will be used for the same idea, in order to give the habit of the reader to use different notations (e.g. the notation used for the transposed of a matrix). This synthesis is not comprehensive, and does not pretend to be rigourous. Only the essential chapters and sections have been kept. When prerequisites are necessary, they are announced, even if it is sometimes not possible to develop points before others, because, on one hand, they sometimes call each other, and, on the other hand, some notions have volontarily not been given (limits computing, in Calculus). Indeed, many points are supposed to be known: this document consists only in a set of reminds! [less ▲]

This document is a kind of Physics formula's form. It is majoritarly coming from a volonty of classifying these last so they are easily accessible. Firstly, this document was redacted in order to be prepared to the engineering studies (at ULg). For this reason, the text has not been very developped, so this document is as short (and quick) as possible, with no need to read unnecessary sentences which would slow the reading. Principal sentences have been written, to make links, because Physics is not only formula's: speaking is a very important way to communicate ideas and to link concepts, especially in Sciences. This document is the minimum minimorum that is given in first degree of Computer Sciences at the University of Liège; some notions also come from the Civil Engineers' course (of this same university). Only few proves will be made, to lighten the document; however, formula's will be admitted. Many different notations will be used for the same idea, in order to give the habit of the reader to use different notations (e.g. $U$ or $V$ in $V=RI$). This synthesis is not comprehensive, and does not pretend to be rigourous. Only the essential chapters and sections have been kept. When prerequisites are necessary, they are announced. Indeed, many points are supposed to be known: this document consists only in a set of reminds! It is clear that the reading of this document needs some basical math. knowledge. A summary of the most important notions is ML_SM2009, from the same author. [less ▲]

The Sudoku game has gained much interest for a dozen years. It is now put in various magazines and mathematical research is more and more interested in it. This document aims at providing some newer information about the mathematical properties of the Sudoku, but not according to graphs' theory. We do not speak about the ``minimum number of clues,'' but about Sudokus' matrix interpretation: general properties of its determinant, in relation to eigenvalues; transpose; non-Hermitian character; neither symmetric nor antisymmetric character; non-normal character; non-orthogonal character when the matrix has a determinant of 0, conjecture when the determinant is not equal to 0; order; condition number.
