The high level of sophistication in portfolio management modeling techniques often goes along with very large output sensitivity to parameter choices. As a potential solution to this problem, this paper proposes a consistent and flexible methodology to represent the distribution of future values of a portfolio through scenario trees. This methodology relies on the information contained in current option prices in order to generate the probability density function of future returns. This density function can be used, in turn, to generate scenario trees . As an illustration, a tree of scenarios based on S&P500 options is built and then used to compute arbitrage-free option prices. The approach preserves information embedded in options prices and is able to provide very accurate values for out-of-sample options. The high level of numerical accuracy of the framework is reproduced on different samples. The scenario tree approach also provides stable pricing results when confronted with the passage of time. The results derived from our model are comparable to those obtained from Rubinstein’s [1994] methodology, although both models fulfill different objectives. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The analysis of HST-STIS FUV images has greatly and quickly advanced our knowledge of the magnetospheric mechanisms producing the auroral emissions on the giant planets. However, these studies were limited to the brightest emissions and very little has been said about the fainter emissions, mainly because of the lower S/N. We propose to image the faint auroral emissions on Jupiter which could not be observed with STIS. We will take full advantage of ACS/SBC's higher sensitivity to observe the diffuse auroral FUV emissions appearing poleward and directly equatorward of Jupiter's main auroral oval in the northern hemisphere. This proposal has the potential to reveal new magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling mechanisms especially those involving solar wind interactions with a giant planet. [less ▲]

The paper draws on the survey led on 2.500 walloon people in collaboration with IWEPS in 2003-2004. It studies the impact of the belgian law that makes voting compulsory. If it was no longer teh case, who would go on voting ? Results of the survey shows that the constituency would differ rather strongly from what it is now : in particular, amnong the poor people and the less educated would many would drop voting. But it would be the case too of lonely people, for instance or people who feel unsecure. The result would be that the specific demands form those categories would loose much weight in the political process. [less ▲]

Repeated imaging of Jupiter's aurora has shown that the northern main oval has a distorted 'kidney bean' shape in the general range of 90-140? System III longitude, which appears unchanged since 1994. While it is more difficult to observe the conjugate regions in the southern aurora, no corresponding distortion appears in the south. Recent improved accuracy in locating the satellite footprint auroral emissions has provided new information about the geometry of Jupiter's magnetic field in this and other areas. The study of the magnetic field provides us with insight into the state of matter and the dynamics deep down Jupiter. There is currently no other way to do this from orbit. The persistent pattern of the main oval implies a disturbance of the local magnetic field, and the increased latitudinal separation of the locus of satellite footprints from each other and from the main oval implies a locally weaker field strength. It is possible that these phenomena result from a magnetic anomaly in Jupiter's intrinsic magnetic field, as was proposed by A. Dessler in the 1970's. There is presently only limited evidence from the scarcity of auroral footprints observed in this longitude range. We propose to obtain HST UV images with specific observing geometries of Jupiter to determine the locations of the auroral footprints of Io, Europa, and Ganymede in cycle 13 to accurately determine the magnetic field geometry in the suggested anomaly region, and to either confirm or refute the suggestion of a local magnetic anomaly. Water availability for agricultural activities will decrease in the twenty-first century. As a consequence, agricultural water management will have to improve in order to meet two challenges: satisfy the needs of an increasing world population; and alleviate the climate change impacts. One way to improve agricultural water management consists of including the ‘risk’ notion as much as possible at the different decision levels of: farmers, farmer corporations and states or associations of states. These three decision levels will be analysed both for rainfed and irrigated agriculture. The poorest countries are those most subject to climate risks, the main risks in developing countries, because they too rarely possess the means to combat excesses or shortages of water during the plant growing period (irrigation schemes) and they cannot rely on crop insurance or other kinds of support to maintain their income in bad years. Consequently, in order to ensure a minimum level of income, farmers will prefer low input practices that provide a low but stable production without involving too much investment or cash. Where possible they will diversify their production. This paper first defines hazard, vulnerability and risk in the particular context of drought assessment and prediction. It then presents some strategies to reduce water risk in three major categories: (1) more irrigated agricultural land in an efficient manner; (2) increased and better managed pasture and forest areas to benefit from otherwise lost water by evaporation process, increasing animal productivity; (3) well water managed dryland agriculture. In dryland agriculture, some additional public measures are necessary, mainly drought risk insurance and early warning systems, in order to promote investment in drought-prone environments and to provide tools for decision-making. The adoption of an efficient water use management of rainfall and irrigation will ensure food security, contribute to poverty alleviation, and free water for non-agricultural uses. The paper presents some new promising techniques and approaches. Finally, it discusses the sharing of risk between the different decision levels and launches some ideas to serve as discussion points in the electronic conference. [less ▲]

An extension of the (nonexact-perturbed) forward-backward method for finding a zero of a sum of two maximal monotone operators is proposed, using a nonlinear metric, tied to Bregman functions. Results of weak and strong convergence for a sequence generated by such a method are established, under similar assumptions to those appearing in the context of the proximal point algorithm. For solving the convex optimization problem of finding a minimizer of a sum of two proper closed convex functions on a real Hilbert space, we consider a sequence generated by an inexact iterative scheme, based upon the Moreau-Yosida approximation, in which the quadratic kernel is replaced by a pseudo-distance, tied to Bregman functions. Several classical results (obtained for the Moreau-Yosida approximation) are extended to this context. [less ▲]
