Process for depositing by electrografting a strong adherent polymer coating onto an electrically conductive surface comprising an electrochemical grafting at the surface of an active monomer for forming a primer coating P onto said surface and having as general formula: X0 (meth)acrylate wherein X is either part of a preformed polymer or is an intermediate agent for polyaddition reaction or is an anchoring group for attachment of a molecule having at least one complementary reactive group. Such process allows formation of new primer by one-step electro-grafting of a reactive polymer called macromonomer.; Such process also allows further modification of an initial electrografted polymer (called primer coating) to increase the coating thickness by the so-called grafting-from technique i.e. polymerization of a second monomer or to introduce other types of polymers(also called top coating) via covalent attachment between the primer and the top coating through the X ester group by the so called grafting onto technique. Such process also allows to graft onto the primer coating compounds like functional polymer, peptide, protein, oligonucleotide, dyes, drugs, anti-bacterian compounds. [less ▲]

A gene (cDNA) encoding a bovine myostatin protein. The nucleic acid coding sequence is identified as SEQ ID NO:1 and the protein sequence is identified as SEQ ID NO:2. A mutant gene (SEQ ID NO:3) in which the coding sequence lacks an 11-base pair consecutive sequence (SEQ ID NO:11) of the sequence encoding bovine protein having myostatin activity has been sequenced. It has been shown that cattle of the Belgian Blue breed homozygous for the mutant gene lacking myostatin activity are double-muscled. A method for determining the presence of muscular hyperplasia in a mammal is described. The method includes obtaining a sample of material containing DNA from the mammal and ascertaining whether a sequence of the DNA encoding (a) a protein having biological activity of myostatin, is present, and whether a sequence of the DNA encoding (b) an allelic protein lacking the activity of (a), is present. The absence of (a) and the presence of (b) indicates the presence of muscular hyperplasia in the mammal. [less ▲]

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a (co)polymer excellent in resistance to thermal decomposition by polymerizing or copolymerizing a monomer or monomers in the presence of an initiation system contg. a free-radical generator other than a bromoolefin and a catalyst comprising a Pd complex having an oxidation number of 0 and represented by a specific formula. SOLUTION: A Pd salt (e.g. Pd acetate), a ligand (e.g. triphenylphosphine), and a solvent (e.g. toluene) are charged into a reactor to form a Pd complex having an oxidation number of 0 and represented by the formula: Pd(0)L<1> L<2> L<3> L<4> [wherein L<1> to L<4> are each a ligand such as PRR'R'' (wherein R, R', and R'' are each 1-14C alkyl, etc.)]. Then, a monomer (e.g. methyl methacrylate) is added to the reactor followed by the addition of a free-radical generator (e.g. CCl4 ) in a molar ratio of Pd to the generator of 0.01-100.; The contents in the reactor are heated to 40-90 deg.C and stirred for a certain time to conduct the polymn. The reaction mixture is diluted with toluene, etc., filtered, and condensed under a reduced pressure. The resultant polymer soln. is poured into methanol, etc., and the resultant precipitate is filtered, washed, and dried to give a polymer having a number average mol.wt. of 400-10,000,000g/mol and a polydispersity lower than 2. Protein derived from human growth hormone (hGH), which no longer has the first two amino acids of the natural hypophysial hormone at the terminal end of the amino acid, retaining its main biological activity of bone and somatic growth stimulation, but no longer having the transitory and diabetogenic insulin effects generally observed when administering hGH. Said modified growth hormone protein can be used for therapeutic purposes, in particuliar for treating clinical cases where the effects of the growth hormone sugars on the metabolism are to be avoided: patients suffering from cachexia, new-born babies and the elederly. The invention relates to a hybrid protein which fuses the sub-unit B of the choleraic toxin with an active sequence of a heterologous antigen with respect to said unit. Said hybrid protein is comprised of a sequence of said sub-unit which extends between the 3rd and 100th amino acid rest of the complete sub-unit B. The heterologous amino acid sequence is used upstream or downstream of the latter. This hybrid protein is usable for vaccination, particularly to help the stabilisation of heterologous antigens in the intestinal environment. [less ▲]

Compounds of retuline series and isoretuline series are described. These alkaloids can be prepared by hemisynthesis from strychnine or strychnobiline that are the main alkaloids of Strychnos nux-vomica (strychnine) or Strychnos variabilis (strychnobiline). The compounds of both series (retuline and isoretuline) display antiinflammatory, analgesic and antispasmodic effects that could lead to new medicaments. [less ▲]
