The collision of Deep Impact with comet 9P/Tempel 1 generated a bright cloud of dust which dissipated during several days after the impact. The brightness variations of this cloud and the changes of its position and shape are governed by the physical properties of the dust grains. We use a Monte Carlo model to describe the evolution of the post-impact dust plume. The results of our dynamical simulations are compared to the data obtained with FORS2, the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph for the VLT of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), to derive the particle size distribution and the total amount of material contained in the dust ejecta cloud. This article studies disruption tolerant networks (DTNs) where each node knows the probabilistic distribution of contacts with other nodes. It proposes a framework that allows one to formalize the behaviour of such a network. It generalizes extreme cases that have been studied before where (a) either nodes only know their contact frequency with each other or (b) they have a perfect knowledge of who meets who and when. This paper then gives an example of how this framework can be used; it shows how one can find a packet forwarding algorithm optimized to meet the 'delay/bandwidth consumption' trade-off: packets are duplicated so as to (statistically) guarantee a given delay or delivery probability, but not too much so as to reduce the bandwidth, energy, and memory consumption. There is an increasing scientific concern that organochlorine compounds, recognized as environmental pollutants, may cause estrogen-related disorders. One of the main hypotheses is that organochlorines can act through their estrogenic or anti-estrogenic properties. Many endocrine diseases can be concerned by the pathogenic role on environmental residues in their promotion. The carcinogenic potential of environmental xenoestrogens on breast cancer is a matter of controversy. In Europe, despite their prohibition since the 70's, residues persist in soil and rivers, resulting in a widespread contamination of the general population. Our results suggest that environmental exposure to p,p'-DDE, HCB or PCBS may contribute to multifactorial pathogenesis of breast cancer. Male infertility is also a matter of concern. Our data suggest that male infertility can be associated with exposure of the mothers to p,p'-DDE, and that deleterious effects are probably restricted to intra-uterine life. Early or precocious puberty in children adopted from developing countries where organochlorines are still used is frequently reported. A possible relationship with exposure to DDT is suggested. There are two possible pathways to account for precocious puberty following chronic exposure to estrogenic related compounds: weak stimulation of estrogen sensitive tissues or removal in Belgium of the suppressing effects of estrogens on gonadotrophins, suppressing effect that was due to exposure in the origin country. [less ▲]

Following a decision taken by the National Co-ordinators of the OECD Test Guideline Programme and the OECD Risk Assessment Advisory Body (RAAB) at their joint session in December 1995, an OECD Workshop on Statistical Analysis of Aquatic Ecotoxicity Data was held in Braunschweig, Germany on 15-17 October 1996. The workshop was hosted by the Biologische Bundesanstalt für Land-und Forstwirtschaft (BBA) in Braunschweig and was chaired by Dr Arno Lange of the German Umweltbundesamt (UBA). The objectives of the workshop were: • to review the options available for the analysis of data from ecotoxicity tests; • to compare their advantages and disadvantages; • to recommend (a) the most appropriate approach for deriving a summary parameter(s) which has (have) scientific validity, and (b) further work to be undertaken by the OECD and/or others, as appropriate. In plenary and working group sessions participants discussed statistical data analysis appropriate for single-species chronic/subchronic studies using a number of test concentrations, i.e. dose-response tests. Aquatic tests served as a basis for these discussions, however the issues addressed may be similar for toxicity tests in general. Background documents had been prepared on the following main existing data analysis approaches for such tests: analysis of variance/hypothesis testing (“ANOVA/NOEC approach”); regression analysis (based on empirical models); and mechanistic modelling (theory-based). It was concluded that the NOEC, as the main summary parameter of aquatic ecotoxicity tests, is inappropriate for a number of reasons (see detailed discussion in the report) and should therefore be phased out. It was recommended that the OECD should move towards a regression-based estimation procedure. The time course of effects should be incorporated in the analytical procedures, and the OECD should initiate a study of the available time-dependent regression models (both mechanistic and empirical) in order to select those which best meet its needs. The study should also address the issue of appropriate values of x for ECx and the optimal experimental designs. A steering group should be set up to direct the mathematical, statistical and biological work required to take the workshop recommendations forward. This group should include representatives from the appropriate scientific and regulatory communities. [less ▲]

Belgium is divided into 3 regions: Walloon, Flemish and Brussels regions. Each one has its own political autonomy in various fields, in particular the natural resources management. Wooded area in the Walloon region covers 530.600 ha. A first temporary inventory has been realised in the beginning of the 1980s. A new permanent forest inventory is carried out since the beginning of the 1994. The Flemish region will start the first permanent inventory of its 128.600 ha of wooded area in 1997. With only 2.000 ha the Brussels region does not organise a forest inventory up to now. The method used in the Walloon region is summarised below as the Flemish inventory method is quite similar. We describe the infrared (IR) photometric system for the single channel photometers at ESO, which have been used from 1983 until 1994. In addition to the broadband near infrared (NIR, 1-5μm) photometric system presented in 1991 by Bouchet et al. and Bersanelli et al., we describe a narrow-band NIR photometric system and a mid infrared (MIR, 7-20μm) photometric system. We also extend the set of NIR standard stars by Bouchet et al. towards fainter objects (K=~9). The photometric data of the standard stars in these systems were extracted from the complete IR photometric data archive of ESO, covering 10 years. The zeropoints of the NIR photometry are set by assuming that HR 3314 has a V-magnitude of 3.89, and that V-K=-0.05, J-K=-0.01, H-K=-0.01, K-L'=0.00, K-M=0.00. The zeropoints of the MIR photometry are set by assuming that the colours ofβ Hyi (HR 0098) and α CenA (HR 5459) are equal to the colours of the Sun. We adopt the absolute calibration of Megessier (1995A&A...296..771M) for the NIR and we argue that this calibration can be extrapolated to 20μm, using the MIR calibrations by Rieke et al. (1985AJ.....90..900R) and Cohen et al. (1992AJ....104.1650C). The definition of the zeropoints is consistent with the absolute calibration. We obtained accurate (Ï =~0.02mag.) NIR photometry of about 240 standard stars and MIR photometry of about 40 standard stars (Ï =~0.04mag). Comparison of our NIR photometric system with other well established systems shows that there are some small colour dependencies and zeropoint offsets which are always smaller than about 0.02mag. except for the L' band.

[less ▲]
