En 1990 et en 1998, nous avons eu l’occasion de distribuer un questionnaire à plus de 800 étudiants de sept écoles secondaires de la région de Québec dans le but, entre autres, de déterminer certaines composantes de leurs sentiments d’appartenance. La comparaison de données, à une dizaine d’années d’intervalle, s’avère instructive, d’autant plus que nos résultats sont analysés à l’aide d’une méthode multidimensionnelle, la classification ascendante hiérarchique, qui nous permet de décomposer les images globales en une série de profils de réponses et de regrouper les individus interrogés en fonction des similitudes de ce profil. La pluralité des conceptions propres à chaque individu peut ainsi être mise en évidence dans nos échantillons, ce qui nous empêche de considérer la perception des différentes identités nationales comme une réalité homogène. On retiendra, entre autres, qu’en dix ans d’intervalle, la fierté d’être Québécois comme celle d’être Canadien a diminué de 20 % en comparant les échantillons globalement. Toutefois, l’enquête de 1998 nous montre également qu’au delà des options constitutionnelles préférées (63 % de l’échantillon privilégient d’abord l’indépendance ou la souveraineté-partenariat), le fait de considérer simultanément les indicateurs de fierté, de l’image des groupes linguistiques et de la hiérarchie des priorités offre un portrait beaucoup plus nuancé des positions des élèves de secondaire 4 et 5. À sa façon, les contradictions d’une société distincte s’y retrouvent toujours illustrées. [less ▲]

Forest liming has received increased attention since the 1980s, when unusual needle yellowing and fall were observed in large parts of Europe and North America. This ‘new forest decline’ has been attributed to several causes acting individually or in synergy, amongst which were 'acid rain', nitrogen saturation and nutritional imbalances. Liming at moderate doses was suggested as a counteracting measure against soil acidification and to remove nutritional deficiencies. Another major forest management operation is whole tree harvesting. Both liming and clearcut may however affect the water quality leaving the treated areas. In particular, nitrate leaching is of major concern, as nitrate leaching may be linked to soil acidification, associated cation and/or aluminium release, and nitrate contamination of surface and groundwater. In this paper, I summarise main results of studies performed in the Belgian Ardennes. In this area, the acid brown soils are naturally poor in magnesium and the observed forest dieback symptoms were supposed to be the consequence of increased pollution exacerbating magnesium deficiency. Liming was suggested for prevention and correction. However, possible side effects, in particular on soil solution and stream water chemistry needed to be evaluated. Another major concern was the effects of clearcut operations on the streamwater quality in this area important for drinking water collection. The effects of dolomite lime were investigated at the watershed, plot and laboratory level. Paired watersheds of approximately 80 ha were mainly covered with Picea abies. One watershed of each pair was limed with 3 T/ha of fine ground dolomite and 200 kg/ha K2SO4. Runoff chemistry was analysed for major cations and anions and time series intervention analysis was used to detect statistically significant changes in stream water chemistry. Results showed increased magnesium concentrations immediately after liming, but a major part of the lime was retained by the soil system, and consequences on water chemistry were minor. However, in the plot study, where 5 T ha-1 of a dolomite lime suspension were applied to adjacent Quercus petraea and Picea abies stands, soil solution nitrate concentrations were significantly increased through liming in the Quercus plots. Increased net nitrification in the Quercus stand was confirmed by potential net nitrification measurements in the laboratory. The effects of tree harvesting on streamwater ion concentrations were investigated by clear felling 22 ha (9650 m3 wood) of a 81 ha watershed. This area represented one third of the forested area, the remaining area being covered equally with young plantations and 70-100 year old Picea abies. First data indicate increased potassium, iron, lead and organic carbon concentrations, but no major change in streamwater nitrate concentrations. Results will be discussed in relation to literature data and known controlling factors of the nitrification process. This analysis reveals that the speed, extent and duration of a perturbation in nitrate leaching after liming or felling vary at different sites. Risks assessment for nitrate leaching is therefore difficult and prediction of nitrate leaching in response to a perturbation remains an important challenge for further studies. In particular, basic controls of the nitrification process and relation nitrification/immobilisation need further investigation. [less ▲]

This report presents new progresses in topology optimization of continuum structures with stress constraints. One principal contribution consists in the consideration of equivalent stress criteria which can generalization of von Mises criterion and which are able to take into account non equal stress limits in tension and compression. A literature review led us to consider Raghava and Ishai criteria, which include a contribution of hydrostatic pressure. With the help of these criteria topology optimization can predict more realistic designs in which structural members are able to withstand better tension loads than compression loads, or vice-versa, as it is sometimes encountered in civil engineering or in composite material design. The implementation and sensitivity analysis aspects of Raghava and Ishai criteria in the Finite Element context are presented. We also present recent advanced developments to the solution of topology problems with stress constraints like the stress constraint relaxation technique and the numerical optimization procedure based on convex approximations and dual optimizers. Finally numerical applications will show the original character of the stress based topology designs ad versus compliance designs when there are unequal stress limits or when there are more than one load case. Compressor and turbine blade design involves thermodynamical, aerodynamical and mechanical aspects, resulting in an important number of iterations. Inverse methods and optimization procedures help the designer in this long and eventually frustrating process. In this paper an optimization procedure is presented which solves two types of two-dimensional or quasi-three-dimensional problems: the inverse problem, for which a target velocity distribution is imposed, and a more global problem, in which the aerodynamic load is maximized. In the conception of the envelope of a building, the sketch design is a crucial moment of the design. The first drawing gives a concrete expression to the first choices of the project author, in respect of a set of requirements and of general preferences, expressed by the multiple stakeholders of the project, namely: the building owner, the users, the administrative authorities and the design team surrounding the architect. In order to help the stakeholders in improving this stage of the sketch design, the present study explores a multicriteria decision aiding procedure. This MultiCriteria Decision Aid (MCDA) methodology should be close to the usual design process. This paper presents the design aid procedures, in parallel. At this time of the study, the decision aid process is a first attempt to cope with this architectural design challenge. The floor is expected to react to the suggested presentation of this MCDA open problem. [less ▲]
