We review the current status of our long-term monitoring project on slowly pulsating B stars that we started in the course of 1996 and that was recently completed as far as the first part of our plan is concerned. In total, we have selected 17 southern and 8 northern stars. The idea is to fully exploit our current data in the near future and to select the most interesting targets for further very-long-term follow-up monitoring. A first conclusion is that half of the southern targets turn out to be spectroscopic binaries. Some of these have circular orbits and periods of the same order of magnitude as the intrinsic pulsation period(s) of the primary. The eccentric binaries have periods ranging from 12 to 460 d. For most stars the photometric behaviour is dominated by the same frequency as the intrinsic spectroscopic variability. Multiperiodicity in the expected frequency range is found for almost all stars. Two objects, however, turn out to have only one dominant pulsation mode. [less ▲]

A correct modelling of thin-walled members behaviour requires a due account for global lateral buckling, but also for local buckling of the profile walls. In this perspective, a special beam element is developed. The displacement field of this element allows to model any in plane global behaviour (tension, compression, in plane bending, in plane column buckling…) as well as the local buckling of the profile walls. The element is developed for bifurcation analysis (computation of critical loads) as well as for non linear analysis, including coupling between global and local phenomena. [less ▲]

evapotranspiration experts often need to make decisions relating to the precision of the results of various existing methods such as traditional and satellite methods. For these reasons a decision support system (EVA) is develped in order to provide evapotranspiration experts with a tool for evaluating the results of a variety of existing methods for estimating potential and real evapotranspiration by using in situ data and remote sensing data. The EVA provides a variety of models that can be used either in combination or as stand-alone tools to generate information for agricultural planning and management. The paper focuses on the concepts of the EVA software. A case study also will be presented. [less ▲]

The Belgian Crop Growth Monitoring System (B-CGMS) uses the 1km²-resolution imagery of NOAA-AVHRR and SPOT-VEGETATION to improve its yield estimates. The pre-processed images are converted to fAPAR and combined with meteorological data (irradiance, temperature) to daily growth values by means of the Monteith approach. The regional means of the cumulative monthly growth numbers are calibrated against official harvest statistics by means of crop-specific neural networks. The quality of the yield estimates varies with the importance of the crop: the R²-values for winter wheat, sugar-beets and fodder maize are respectively 60%, 48% and 36%. The final yield forecasts will be better, because the B-CGMS integrates the image-based yield estimates with the assessments of the agromet-model and of the technological trend function. The technique of linear unmixing seems promising but in its actual state it is too unpredictable to be included in an operational scheme. [less ▲]

During summer, channelized sectors of the Mosel and Saar rivers undergo severe oxygen depletion episodes that compromise their ecological value. A programme was launched by the International Commission for the Protection of river Mosel and Saar (ICPMS) in order to identify the causes of this situation. All processes involved in the oxygen budget, including photosynthesis, algal, bacterial, zooplanktonic, zoobenthic respiration and nitrification, were investigated, and oxygen budgets for different seasonal situations were established. In close connection with these field investigations, three different mathematical models of the ecological functioning of the river system were implemented: the BfG model of the Saar and Mosel Rivers , the ULg Meuse model, adapted to the river Mosel, and the Mosarel model, resulting from the application to the Mosel-Saar river system of the RIVERSTRAHLER modelling approach We here describe the common features and differences in the conception of these models and present a few examples of their results. The fertile waters of the North Sea represent one major life site for at least three different marine mammal species: the harbour porpoise, Phocoena phocoena , the harbour seal, Phoca vitulina, and the white-beaked dolphin, Lagenorhynchus albirostris. More occasionally, oceanic species such as the white-sided dolphin Lagenorhynchus acutus, the sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus or the fin whale Balaenoptera physalus can be sighted or found stranded. Very few data dealing with marine mammal diet in the North Sea are available. In order to contribute to the feeding ecology of these North Sea marine mammals, Cd as well as 15N and 13C measurements have been performed in their tissues. Sperm whales and white-sided dolphins display high renal Cd levels (258 µg.g-1 and 88 µg.g-1 dry weight respectively). Mean Cd concentrations measured in harbour porpoise, harbour seal, white beaked dolphin and fin whale kidneys remain low (mean: 5, 0.9, 0.5 and 4 µg.g-1 respectively). However, some adult porpoises display renal Cd concentrations higher than 10 µg.g-1. Mean 13C measured in the muscles of sperm whales, fin whales and white-sided dolphins are more negative compared to harbour porpoise, harbour seal or white-beaked dolphin mean value. Cd contaminated porpoises display significant lower muscle 13C than other porpoises. Both low d13C and high Cd levels suggest a greater reliance of white-sided dolphins, sperm whales on oceanic cephalopods. It appears that some harbour porpoises can also feed on oceanic squids suggesting dynamic interactions between the North Sea and the North Atlantic porpoise populations. [less ▲]

The basic equations, the limitations and the main features of the parametric fire proposed in Annexe B of Eurocode 1 are given. 48 experimental fire tests are used to assess the validity of this model. The model has been applied to these tests and the comparison has been made, for each test, on the maximum temperature in the air and on the maximum temperature calculated in 2 hypothetical steel sections, one thermally protected and one unprotected. The agreement is very poor for the air and for the unprotected steel temperature, and somewhat better for the protected steel temperature. Some proposals are made which allow to improve the agreement, while keeping the same expressions for the parametric fire. These modifications concern the equivalent thermal properties of multi material walls, and the introduction of a minimum duration of the fire and a of a ventilation effect in case of fuel-bed controlled fires. Previous results for adaptive lambda -tracker have focused on nonlinear systems with relative degree one or on linear systems with higher relative degree. We extend the adaptive lambda -tracker to lambda -stabilize nonlinear system with higher relative degree. Only little structural information about the system to be controlled is needed. lambda -stability and convergence of the adaptation is proven for tracking a large class of reference trajectories. The design of the controller is very simple and intuitive, only few parameters have to be tuned [less ▲]

An array of tin-oxide sensors is used to continuously monitor different odour emissions in the environment. The paper presents some issues aiming at improving the portability and the user-friendliness of the instrument as well as testing what kind of signal may be used to monitor the odour "intensity". Main results are the following. The test of various pre-processing data algorithms pointed out that the use of pure reference air could be avoided, as long as the sensors are allowed to periodically regenerate in the presence of ambient air. Sensor array in static contact with ambient air could be sufficient for the on-line monitoring, but the use of a controlled gas flow system to transfer the odour from the source is better to avoid the influence of air movement on the heated sensors. The control of the temperature and the humidity of the gas and the thermo-regulation of the sensor chamber don't seem essential, even for outdoor operation. When trying to build a regression model linking the odour intensity to the sensor signals, Partial Least Square (PLS) model gives better results with respect to Multi Linear Regression or Principal Component regression models. For an application around a landfill area, where sensor signals are compared to the personal feeling of the operator in the field, PLS gives a percentage of 71% correct intensity prediction. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between in vivo and ex vivo quantitative ultrasound (QUS) measurements with and without soft tissue and ex vivo dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at different aspects and levels of the third metacarpal bone (MC III) in horses. Both MC III of 8 clinically normal horses were divided in 9 sites (lateral, medial, dorsal aspect; proximal, mid, distal level). Speed of sound (SOS) measurements were performed with a QUS multisite device (Sunlight Ltd., Rehovot, Israel) and a DXA device (Hologic Inc., Bedford, USA) was used to evaluate cortical bone mineral density (BMD) at each site. Ex vivo data on MC III were analysed with a mixed model to test the hypothesis of no difference between aspect and level in QUS and DXA while adjusting for fixed member and for random horse effects. Pearson correlation coefficients between SOS and BMD obtained on MC III with soft tissue were calculated for each member and site. A mixed model was used to determine whether there is a difference between in vivo and ex vivo SOS data while adjusting for fixed aspect, level, and member and random horse effects. Highly significant (p<0.001) differences were obtained between aspects for ex vivo SOS and DXA measurements. Differences (p<0.001) were obtained between measurement levels for DXA data. The table shows least squares means (LSM) and standard errors (Std Err) for QUS and DXA measurements performed at different aspects. The correlation coefficient between SOS and DXA over all 9 sites and both MC III was negative (r=-0.28; p<0.001). In vivo and ex vivo SOS data were different (p<0.01) BUT NOT EX VIVO DATA WITH AND WITHOUT SOFT TISSUE (P>0.05). The study suggests that, in horses, SOS results can not be explained only by BMD, but could reflect additional properties of bone, such as elasticity, architecture or bone strength. Our results indicate that soft tissue does not influence ex vivo SOS measurement results. [less ▲]
