[more ▼] Long-term monitoring activities of some 20 atmospheric constituents are continuing at the International Scientific Station of the Jungfraujoch, Switzerland, based on remote infra-red solar observations with high spectral resolution Fourier transform spectrometers. As a contribution to non-CO2 greenhouse gas investigations, we report the trends observed in the vertical column abundances measured regularly since the mid-1980s for CH4, N2O, CO, CCl2F2, CHClF2 and SF6. With the exception of CO, all species show positive rates of change in their near past atmospheric loading, those of CH4, N2O and CCl2F2 having slowed significantly during the more recent years. The derived rates of change will be compared to findings resulting from ground-level in situ investigations at latitudes similar to that of the Jungfraujoch, and be interpreted in terms of resulting global loading changes. [more ▼] Observations of globular clusters show that they contain much too little gas or dust, compared to what should be present due to the mass-losing stars in the cluster. Many authors have been intrigued by the fate of the gas in globular clusters. They have suggested various mechanisms by which the gas could escape from the cluster, such as stellar UV radiation, cluster winds driven by X-ray bursters, novae, or flare-stars, relativistic winds from millisecond pulsars, condensation into stars, accretion processes drawing upon a central gas reservoir, continuous sweeping of the cluster gas by the gaseous medium of the Galactic halo dots. Recent results also show that globular cluster stars show many abundance anomalies. Accretion of interstellar gas by the cluster stars has been suggested as a plausible mechanism to explain these anomalies. It is also a major ingredient of the EASE scenario linking halo field stars to globular clusters, which we have recently developed to explain strong r-and s-elements correlations in halo field dwarf stars. Here we will briefly review the status of gas and dust detection in globular clusters, as well as the possible gas removal mechanisms. We will explore in more details the gas and dust accretion processes onto main sequence stars. In particular, we will study the efficiency of this mechanism in removing gas from the globular clusters interstellar medium. [more ▼] A unified approach to transient stability closed-loop control is presented. It relies on the general transient stability method called SIME, from which the Preventive and the Emergency SIMEs are derived. The Preventive SIME uses time-domain simulations of plausible contingencies prior to their occurrence, for the online power system monitoring from the control room. The Emergency SIME, on the other hand, uses real-time measurements, acquired on the system power plants after the actual occurrence of a contingency in order to appraise and trigger countermeasures indispensable for the system integrity. Despite fundamental differences in their design and objectives, the two approaches have also common features. This paper highlights main differences and similarities, and illustrates them on a realistic, large power system. The tradeoff between on-line preventive control and real-time emergency control is also assessed in terms of size of the involved countermeasures. [more ▼] This paper discusses procedures for nonlinearity detection, localisation and identification in structures from time domain vibration measurements. The detection and the localisation techniques use pattern recognition tools and are based on a dissimilarity measure between the signals coming from a linear structure and the corresponding nonlinear one. The detection procedure distinguishes between linear structures and structures with a nonlinearity employing nearest neighbour techniques. The localisation procedure combines substructuring with a nonlinearity detection procedure. This technique is useful for cases of local nonlinearity, when its localisation can be of value for the consequent understanding and modelling of the structure. The identification procedure makes use of the Karhunen-Loeve transform, known also as Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). It is a powerful tool for solving inverse problems in nonlinear structural dynamics. The identification procedure works on the basis of the minimisation of a difference function between the experimental and the simulated proper orthogonal modes (POM). The proposed techniques are demonstrated on a beam test case with a local damping type nonlinearity. [more ▼] The study concerns the application techniques of agrochemical products and especially focuses on the wear of spraying nozzles. This one leads to a modification of the spraying characteristics and the homogeneity of distribution deteriorates. An accelerated wear process of nozzles is defined by the standard ISO 5682-1, which makes it possible to compare the wear resistance of the different nozzles available on the market. In order to accelerate the process, an erosive suspension is used in the test rig, but this suspension looses its characteristics during the utilisation time. This is the reason why a system measuring continuously the erosive power has been set up. This system is validated by different discontinuous measurement and the correlation observed have a coefficient of about 0,99. From the signal detected by the new device, two calculations have been carried out. A first one determining continuously the total wear quantity of the nozzles. A second one identifying continuously the erosive power of the suspension. On the one hand, we obtain a basis allowing to compare the wear resistance of nozzles and on the other hand, a parameter indicating the appropriate time to change the suspension. Different discretization procedures are first studied empirically, then means to reduce the discretization variance are proposed. The resulting variance reduction mainly improves interpretability and stability of decision trees, and marginally their accuracy. [more ▼] Variable step strategies are specially well suited to deal with problems characterized by high non-linearity and contact/impact. Both phenomena are typical of dynamic simulations of the interactions between a turbine blade and its casing, the most dramatic example being blade loss. Constant step size strategies do not give satisfactory answer for this kind of problems, since it is very difficult, if not impossible, for the user to find an appropriate time step that does not lead to divergence nor generate extremely costly computations. An automatic time stepping algorithm is proposed, which takes into account the recent history of accelerations in the bodies under consideration. More precisely, the adaptation algorithm is based on estimators of the integration error of the differential dynamic balance equations. This allows for adaptation of the time step to capture correctly the transient phenomena, with characteristic times which can range from relatively long (in regime) to very short (blade loss), thus ensuring precision while keeping the computation cost to a minimum. Additionally, the proposed algorithm automatically takes decisions regarding the necessity of updating the tangent matrix or stopping the iterations, further reducing the computational cost. As an illustration of the capabilities of this algorithm, several numerical simulations of both academic and industrial (the contact/impact between a turbine blade and the casing) problems will be presented. [more ▼] This paper investigates enhancements of decision tree bagging which mainly aims at improving computation times, but also accuracy. The three questions which are reconsidered are: discretization of continuous attributes, tree pruning, and sampling schemes. A very simple discretization procedure is proposed, resulting in a dramatic speedup without significant decrease in accuracy. Then a new method is proposed to prune an ensemble of trees in a combined fashion, which is significantly more effective than individual pruning. Finally, different resampling schemes are considered leading to different CPU time/accuracy tradeoffs. Combining all these enhancements makes it possible to apply tree bagging to very large datasets, with computational performances similar to single tree induction. Simulations are carried out on two synthetic databases and four real-life datasets. [more ▼] Paedomorphosis consists in the retention of larval characters in adult individuals. It has been observed in several species of newts and salamanders. Optimality models were proposed to explain why it occurs in a large range of aquatic habitats. These models predict that paedomorphs can be advantaged in two situations as contrasted as favourable habitats (paedomorph advantage) or harsh habitats where the newts can benefit of delaying metamorphosis provided that competition with metamorphosed individuals is relaxed (best-of-a-bad-lot hypothesis). This last tactic implies that the habitats are stable enough to ensure the survival of individuals that can not leave the pond. In this respect, our aim was to describe behaviour of paedomorphic Alpine newts (Triturus alpestris) dealing with lake drying. We studied a population from an Alpine lake that splits into two parts during summer, one of them drying then totally. We analyzed age structures by means of skeletochronology and capture-marking-recapture. Paedomorphs and metamorphs showed similar age structures with sexual maturity occurring at 4-5 years, suggesting that most paedomorphs did not metamorphose. CMR data revealed that a great proportion of the paedomorphs marked in the drying part of the lake did not metamorphose and survived to drying. We also carried out laboratory experiments using two-compartiments aquaria to simulate lake drying. These experiments proved that paedomorphic newts could cross terrestrial habitats to reach a pond. Thus paedomorphic newts can migrate on land while keeping their larval attributes rather than metamorphosing when their pond is drying up. Such a tactic appears adaptive because polymorphism in such a deep lake reduces competition between individuals (pers. obs.). [more ▼] We show that the synthesis conditions have a dramatic influence on the resistivity behavior of calcium and sodium doped LaMnO3. Several samples prepared by lowtemperature techniques exhibit a double-peaked curve of resistance versus temperature. The model of spin-polarized intergranular tunneling provides a good approach to discuss our experimental results. Grain size and crystallinity are proved to be essential parameters, which are strongly influenced by the preparation process (e.g. the precursors nature and the thermal treatment). [more ▼] In this paper, a temporal machine learning method is presented which is able to automatically construct rules allowing to detect as soon as possible an event using past and present measurements made on a complex system. This method can take as inputs dynamic scenarios directly described by temporal variables and provides easily readable results in the form of detection trees. The application of this method is discussed in the context of switching control. Switching (or discrete event) control of continuous systems consists in changing the structure of a system in such a way as to contreol its behavior. Given a particular discrete control switch, detection trees are applied to the induction of rules which decide based on the available measurements whether or not to operate a switch. Two practical applications are discussed in the context of electrical power systems emergency control. [more ▼] We generalize the concept of conserving, Phi-derivable, approximations to relativistic field theories. Treating the interaction field as a dynamical degree of freedom, we derive the thermodynamical potential in terms of fully dressed propagators, an approach which allows us to resolve the entropy of a relativistic plasma into contributions from its interacting elementary excitations. We illustrate the derivation for a hot QED plasma of massless particles. We also discuss how the self-consistency of the treatment manifests itself into relationships between the contributions from interaction and matter fields. [more ▼] Swaged bolts are an alternative to high strength (HS) bolts for connections in steel structures. To clarify the different steps involved during their specific installation process, a numerical modelling has been carried out. It allows the relevant phenomena to be described and to be evaluated. This numerical calculation accounts for mechanical plasticity and friction contact between the components of swaged bolts. The finite element code "Lagamine" designed for the forming analysis that requires the modelling of the friction between plastically deformable solids has been used with an original and quite efficient way to take into account the contact. The drawing of the stress distributions during and after the swaging process is the main result of this research.
