We present a holographic camera based on a photorefractive crystal. A first prototype instrument has been studied and built on the basis of a broad optimization study. Some applications in high accuracy displacement/deformation metrology are presented. This first instrument generation was not completely portable and flexible of use. For that reason, a compact device has been designed and is presented. New applications of this holographic camera are shown. All theses achievements show the versatility and flexibility of utilization, as well as the high degree of user-friendliness, of a photorefractive crystal based holographic camera. Future prospects are then discussed [less ▲]

A smart heating controller has a twofold objective: to save as much energy as possible while maintaining an acceptable comfort level in the building. Due to very large time constants in the building response, it has to anticipate internal and external disturbances. In the case of a passive solar commercial building, the need for anticipation is reinforced by important solar and internal gains. Indeed, large solar gains increase the energy savings potential but also the overheating risk. Optimal control theory presents an ideal formalism to solve this problem : its principle is to anticipate the building behaviour using a model and a forecasting of the disturbances in order to compute the control sequence that minimises a given cost function over the optimisation horizon. This cost function can combine comfort level and energy consumption. This paper presents the application of optimal control to auxiliary heating of a passive solar commercial building. Simulation-based and experimental results show that it can lead to significant energy savings while maintaining or improving the comfort level in this type of building. [less ▲]

Take-all of wheat caused by the soil-borne fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. Tritici (Ggt) is known world-wide as a major yield-limiting factor. In Belgium, the Take-all disease is not very well known. A take-all survey has been set up in 1999 in Belgium in collaboration between the Agricultural University of Gembloux and Monsanto where goals were to quantify the disease in the main cereal areas and to study the main factors influencing take-all development. We explore the dynamics of Saturn's F ring by following the orbital histories of circumplanetary particles between the orbits of Prometheus and Pandora. Our goal is to find structures that could be related to the F ring. Using a 3-D mapping integrator developped by Sicardy and Foryta (1996), we follow the behavior of several thousand test particles distributed unformly between 140,000 and 140,400 km in order to acquire a general picture of the dynamics of this zone. The model includes the gravitational effects of Saturn (up to J[SUB]4[/SUB]) and the two shepherd satellites. The numerical simulations show chaotic behaviors of the particles resulting in a close encounter with one or the other of the satellites, which deplete the zone between the satellites. The timescale over which particles are removed by the satellites is of order a ten thousand years. After a hundred thousand years, some particles exist but they are not related to the actual four strands of the F ring. As suggested by Cuzzi and Burns (1988), these simulations indicate that this ring may be a transient event occuring at the edge of the Roche limit. However, taking into account dissipation (collisions, viscosity) might help to explain the longevity and the location of this ring. This work was performed while the author held a National Research Council - NASA ARC Research Associateship. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Mitochondria of Chlamydomonas possess a terminal cyanide-resistant alternative oxidase (AOX) that reduces oxygen to water with electrons derived from the ubiquinone pool. Mutants inactivated in the cytochrome pathway of respiration are still able to consume oxygen via the alternative oxidase pathway. – By combining PCR, RT-PCR and screening of a Chlamydomonas cDNA library, two genes, AOX1 and AOX2, were identified. The cDNAs from AOX1 and AOX2 contain ORFs encoding predicted proteins of 360 and 347 amino acids, respectively. In both cases, a potential targeting presequence was identified in the protein sequence. The two AOX proteins have only 57.6% identity. Compared to AOX proteins from plants and fungi, the highest degree of identity (35-38%) was found with proteins from Aspergillus niger and Ajellomyces capsulatus. – The expression of AOX1 and AOX2 was analyzed at transcriptional level in wild-type and in dum19 mutant cells deprived of cytochrome c oxidase activity. Very low amounts of the 1.9-kb AOX2 transcript were present compared to the 2.3-kb AOX1 transcript. The expression of AOX1 was 2-6 times higher in the mutant than in wild-type, indicating that the absence of the cytochrome pathway of respiration enhances the transcriptional activity of the gene. In contrast to other imaging techniques, scintigraphy provides information about the physiology of the lung rather than anatomical observations. As opposed to other pulmonary function tests, scintigraphy provides regional evaluation instead of global measurement of lung function. This non-invasive imaging technique improves knowledge of the pathophysiologic processes involved in respiratory disorders. Furthermore, it is a sensitive method to early diagnosis of inflammatory process. It is also an unique tool to study the deposition of therapeutic aerosol within the respiratory tract. [less ▲]

The harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena, the harbour seal Phoca vitulina and the white-beaked dolphin Lagenorhynchus albirostris are commonly found stranded on the Belgian and Dutch coasts. More occasionally, oceanic species such as the white-sided dolphin Lagenorhynchus acutus, the sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus or the fin whale Balaenoptera physalus are also found stranded. For the last 10 years, trace analyses (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Se, Hg) have been performed in their organs as well as complementary stable isotope ratio determinations (d15N and d13C) in order to trace their respective metal level and trophic position. Sperm whales, fin whales and white-sided dolphins display strong differences in their d13C and d15N values compared to harbour porpoises, harbour seals or white-beaked dolphins. The isotopic data from white-sided dolphins, sperm whales and fin whales suggest that they do not feed mainly within this area. On the contrary, porpoises, seals and white-beaked dolphins display close isotopic data reflecting a similar nutrition within the North Sea. However significant differences appear between these species: harbour porpoises display a significantly lower d15N (mean: 16.4 0/00 against 18.70/00 and 18.8 0/00 respectively) and d3C (mean-17 0/00 against –16 0/00 and –15.70/00 respectively) than harbour seals and white-beaked dolphins reflecting a lower trophic position of the porpoises. Moreover, Harbour porpoise isotopic compositions seem to have changed over the last five years, which could reflect a switch in their diet. In marine mammals, heavy metals are mainly absorbed through the diet and so potential relations between stable isotopes and heavy metals have been investigated. For example, it is suggested that harbour porpoises occasionally feed on cadmium contaminated preys as squids and that harbour seals and white-beaked dolphins are more restrictive on fish. [less ▲]
