The word "terrorism" was inventend to describe the policy of the French republic after the French revolution and was claimed by the Republican Themselves. Today "terrorism" is used in the rhetoric of power to present an adversary as "absolute evil". The word is reserved to non official groups unable to battle professional armies and so it is discarded when the question is tu judge the acts of those armies. The result is that in today's violent conflict, only the weakest can bel labeled "terrorist" whiche makes the use of the word a very powerful tool in favor of the dominant order. [less ▲]

This paper deals with a new 3D finite element scheme for nondestructive eddy-current testing (ECT) problems. It concerns a perturbation technique applied to the magnetodynamic h- φ formulation. The unperturbed field (in the absence of the flaw) is computed conventionally in the complete domain. The source of the perturbation problem is determined by the projection of the unperturbed field in a relatively small region around the defect that depends on the work frequency. The discretisation of this reduced domain is adapted to the size of the defect and independent of the discretisation of the complete domain. The impedance change is computed by integrating only over the defect and a layer of elements in the reduced domain that touch its boundary. As test case, we consider the second eddy current benchmark problem proposed by the WFNDEC. It involves a pancake coil scanning the inner surface of a metal tube for the detection of flaws on the outer surface. [less ▲]

Electronic nose is a promising technique for field monitoring of malodours in the environment. It is based on an array of non-specific gas sensors coupled with some form of mathematical data processing method to analyse the global response patterns. Some applications concerning the control of water quality are reported in the literature. They often impliy the generation of a headspace gas above liquid samples, but they also concern the odour emitted in the air from wastewater. The typical needs of the final user require both qualitative and quantitative approaches, i.e. both discriminating between slight variations in complex gas mixtures and monitoring a global odour signal which can be correlated with classical characterisation variables of water or air quality. Although potential applications in odour assessment by electronic noses are numerous, a number of challenges still need to be overcome: understanding and controlling the impact of environmental parameters (such as temperature and humidity), improving sensor sensitivity and noise reduction or developing calibration procedures to account for sensor drift. The present limitations of electronic nose technology restrict its use in the environment to the odour monitoring in the surroundings of the emission with instruments specifically designed for the application. Evidence for intimate interconnections between the three major systems of cell communication, the nervous, endocrine and immune systems, has opened important novel research perspectives. Neuroimmune-endocrine interactions are now established as crucial factors for the control of body development and homeostasis. In distant species and invertebrates, the foundations of both the neuroendocrine system and innate immunity were coexisting until now without any apparent problem. Some 400 millions years ago, in a relatively short period after agnathan fishes (e.g., hagfish and lamprey), adaptive immunity emerged in the first gnathostomes, cartilaginous fishes (e.g., shark and ray). Somatic recombination machinery characterizes adaptive immunity and is responsible for the random generation of the huge diversity of immune receptors able to recognize infectious antigens. The emergence of this novel form of immune defenses exerted a so potent pressure that structures and mechanisms developed along the paths of lymphocyte traffic to impose immunological self-tolerance, that is, the inability of the immune system to attack the host organism. Together with the generation of diversity and memory, self-tolerance constitutes a fundamental property of the immune system. The progressive rise in the level of immune diversity and complexity also explains why self-tolerance failures (i.e., organ-specific autoimmune diseases) were increasingly detected during evolution, the maximum being currently observed in the human species. The first thymus appeared in cartilaginous fishes (chondrichthyes), concomitantly with the emergence of rudimental forms of adaptive immunity. Though some forms of tolerance induction already takes place in primary hemopoietic sites (fetal liver and bone marrow), antigen-dependent B-cell tolerance is primarily due to an absence of T-cell help. Among all lymphoid structures, the thymus is the only organ specialized in the establishment of central self-tolerance. The thymus crucially stands at the crossroad between the immune and neuroendocrine systems. In this organ responsible for thymopoiesis—T-cell generation—(Kong et al., 1998), the neuroendocrine system regulates the process of T-cell differentiation from the very early stages. In addition, T lymphocytes undergo inside the thymus a complex educative process that establishes central T-cell self-tolerance of neuroendocrine principles (Geenen et al., 1992; Martens et al., 1996). Within the thymus, a confrontation permanently occurs between previously established neuroendocrine principles and a recent system equipped with recombination machinery promoting stochastic generation of response diversity. Contrary to a previous assumption, the thymus functions throughout life (Poulin et al., 1999; Geenen et al., 2003) and plays a fundamental role in the recovery of a competent T-cell repertoire after intensive chemotherapy or during highly active antiretroviral therapy (Mackall et al., 1995; Douek et al., 1998). This article studies the secular practice of dressing worship statues, particularly the Marian ones. It envisages specifically the Luxembourg space investigating the collections of the Musée en Piconrue, the statues still in place and parish inventories of the “wardrobes” of the Madonna. It shows how appear some statues-mannequins designed to be dressed and examines the making of their trousseau. However, it proves above all to understand the implications of such practice as an approach of the Holy and the identities construction. [less ▲]
