Trying to describe polytheism is a difficult enterprise because the whole system can be seen as a complex structure, each element of which (a deity with its proper name) is both itself a complex set of prerogatives, and at the same time, must be considered in concert with the other elements. After a brief historiographical overview, this paper focuses on the first aspect by using the notion of ‘network’ as a metaphor to refer to the complexity of the ancient Greek gods. It provides two case studies, of the Moirai and the goddess Hera. The paper concludes that polytheism can be described if one conceptualises the complexity of the gods—their unity and diversity—together at every level (Panhellenic and local, cult and myths, and so on). This study assesses Turkey's role and contribution to the Southern Gas Corridor. Firstly, it analysis the concept of energy security, a is a complex, multi-dimensional concept, which largely depends on the context in which it is elaborated and the type of the stakeholder to which it addresses (international organization, producer-, transit-, and consumer-country), the aims and policies pursued by the stakeholders, and, in subsidiary, the nature of the markets (oil markets or gas markets. Secondly, it analysis the EU's approach upon energy security, which relates to the diversification of energy sources, supply and routes, elements which shape up EU’s initiatives in the external energy policy field.Thirdly, it examines how the Southern Gas Corridor could enhance the EU’s energy security -it could mainly contribute to supply security and supply diversification of the Southern, Central and Eastern European gas markets. Finally, the study analysis the role of Turkey into the Southern Gas Corridor implementation and development. [less ▲]

We analyze the situation of six multinational companies’ policy of "social responsibility" and of "sustainable development". The purpose of this communication is to define how these companies, especially the subsidiaries, are socially responsible and take into account environmental issues. This exploratory and qualitative study is based on the analysis of official discourse of six firms and those of human resources managers. We highlight different types of "social responsibility", the "stakeholders" that are taken into account by companies and the means implemented to achieve the policies of "sustainable development" and of "social responsibility". Our purpose is to show, beyond the official discourse, which role the subsidiaries play and which autonomy they have in their policies’ implementation. We wonder in conclusion about the hypothesis that a new way of human resource management of organizations is likely to appear through this new “social responsibility” and, conversely, if the new management involves the emergence of a new social responsibility. We will show that the types of responsibility, shown through the web site and in the HR discourses, are “ethic” (stands for the respect of the values, the standards and the requirements that stakeholders find fair) and “economic” ( focuses on the production of goods and services). Those classifications depend on the firm’s sector. The Human Resources can be more regardful for the legal aspects or for the political aspects, especially in crisis situation. The human resources play different roles and highlight different priorities: respect of fundamental values, actions of the subsidiary that are presented as models, transparent communication, gather the employees around values and projects… [less ▲]

Devonian and Carboniferous deposits are found in many places around the world. The record of climate change preserved in them is the best (and only) resource of information on the Earth`s climate system then, at a time, when current and future climatic change is one of society`s greatest challenges. This book introduces some of the key areas of Mid-Palaeozoic sediment occurrence worldwide, authored by 114 specialists from more than 30 countries. The areas were studied as part of the UNESCO/IUGS project on climate change and biodiversity patterns in the mid-Palaeozoic (Devonian and Carboniferous). This large-scale taxonomic, stratigraphic and palaeoecological study of mid-Paleozoic floras and faunas has resulted in 86 contributions and more than 25 artistic reconstructions characterizing the biosphere of the Devonian and Carboniferous. Each contribution describes (in English and the respective national language) the scope of the IGCP project in the respective country, exemplified by representative Devonian/Carboniferous age geological sections and/or regions there. The authors intend to enhance the visibility and the perception of relevance of research on mid-Palaeozoic deposits beyond the Earth Science community. [less ▲]

This paper looks at migration and the politics of representation in contemporary Italian cinema by comparing one of the Nigerian videos recently produced in Italy, Akpegi Boys (2009), directed by Vincent Omoigui and Simone Sandretti, with two recent Italian films which portray the experience of Nigerian migrants in Italy, Marco and Antonio Manetti’s Torino Boys (1997), and Enrico Verra’s Sotto il Sole Nero (2004). Interestingly enough both films take, implicitly and explicitly, Nigerian videos as a narrative and aesthetic reference in order to build an innovative representation of Nigerian migrants in Italy, thus positioning themselves in an original position vis-à-vis the growing corpus of Italian films about migration emerged over the past two decades. As this paper argues, these three films allow us to identify the emergence of what could be defined as an “anti-humanitarian” representation of migration. By defining their attitude as anti-humanitarian, I do not intend to mean that these films assume a negative or derogatory perspective on migration. On the contrary, what I intend to highlight is that these are films that, by using a number of specific narrative and aesthetic strategies such as, among others, the reference to Nollywood commercial and exploitation filmmaking style, make an attempt to go beyond the binary representation that much debate on migration in Italy implicitly embraces, a representation according to which the migrant is either seen as an invader or as a victim. By playing with cultural references that belong to the contemporary cultural universe of Nigerian migrants themselves, these films suggest the possibility of building a bridge between the diverging ways in which Italians and (in this case Nigerian) migrants look at migration. This encounter has the potential of helping Italian directors and intellectuals in deconstructing their hegemonic gaze on migrants and migration phenomena, and has the possibility to inaugurate an healthy as much as needed process of decentralization and provincialization of singularly “Italian” perspectives on migration in Italy. L’alcool remonte le moral. Une petite cuite n’a jamais tué personne. Over the past several years, Cambodia’s coastal resources system has undergone considerable transformation. The causes have included uncontrolled fishing activities, tourism development, salt and shrimp farming, sand mining, and trade, to name just the most significant. Against this background, this study analyzes pathways of change over the past 15 years in coastal resource systems in two neighboring communities in the Kampong Trach district of Kampot province. The analysis proceeds on two different levels. We first look at change in respect of the cross-scale multiple drivers in the resource system at village level and its effects on the social and ecological components of the marine, intertidal and agricultural areas of the coastal zone. Then, at household level, we examine the diversity of adaptation measures adopted to deal with these changes, and evaluate their impacts on livelihoods. We argue that the degradation of fisheries resources in marine and intertidal zones results from drivers that originate outside and inside the communities, but mostly stems from problems of governance. Despite tangible improvements in rain-fed rice yield, the development of the farming sector is constrained by limited capacity to diversify and intensify production. The adaptation paths to this resources degradation squeeze are multiple. The few households who can afford to enhance or intensify their farming and fishing efforts usually manage to improve their food security status. But in a majority of cases, the adaptation works through a move away from the land and the sea, either through self-employed non-farm and non-fishing activities (local business associated with cross-border trade with Vietnam) or through wage labor. Self-employed activities and demand more capital but represent the main path of improvement in these communities. Wage labor - particularly associated with migration - has become widespread but its potential to improve food security is very limited. Accessing credit and going into debt is another significant way in which people have attempted to adapt either to address chronic food insecurity or to maintain the same level of productivity. The increase of mobility is a central element in adaptation strategy adopted by many who have been affected. This includes: mobility of labor (non-farm, wage and migration); the mobility of capital (e.g. conversion from marine zone fishing to trade); and mobility of landownership (occurring through market-based land concentration). However, we suggest that these processes of adaptation have actually reinforced the wealth disparity that exists between households. It has particularly exacerbated the vulnerability of those who are most dependent on small-scale fisheries. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Synthetic biology, which is a new emerging technology aiming at re-writing existing biological systems and designing completely new parts and devices, brings several potential benefits, but at the same time it constitutes a new threat to biosecurity: for such “double Janus face”, it can be considered as a “dual use research”. Indeed, the risk that its theoretical discoveries and applications are handled by bioterrorists and used for malevolent purposes is not a mere hypothesis. Therefore, it is necessary to look for possible solutions for the governance of this type of risk. In order to try to achieve such purpose, the analysis focuses, first of all, on the overview of the existing regulations against bioterrorism. Then, these regulations are evaluated in the light of the constitutional frame of fundamental rights at stake (in the belief that any policy/regulation should take into account and be based on the respect of fundamental rights). Thirdly, the applicability of the existing regulatory framework to synthetic biology is checked. Fourthly, the different positions that have been proposed so far for addressing biosecurity risks in the area of synthetic biology are shown and put into comparison. Finally, the proposal of a model of governance, called of “prudent vigilance”, is described. [less ▲]

The identification of causal or predictive variants/genes/mechanisms for disease-associated traits is characterized by “complex” networks of molecular phenotypes. Present technology and computer power allow building and processing large collections of these data types. However, the super-rapid data generation is counterweighted by a slow-pace for data integration methods development. Most currently available integrative analytic tools pertain to pairing omics data and focus on between-data source relationships, making strong assumptions about within-data source architectures. A limited number of initiatives exist aiming to find the most optimal ways to analyze multiple, possibly related, omics databases, and fully acknowledge the specific characteristics of each data type. A thorough understanding of the underlying assumptions of integrative methods is needed to draw sound conclusions afterwards. In this chapter, the authors discuss how the field of “integromics” has evolved and give pointers towards essential research developments in this context. [less ▲]

DNA oligomers are promising building blocks for the development of bottom-up nano-devices and molecular logic machines. To control and exploit their unique capabilities of self-assembling and molecular recognition a deep understanding of their dynamical properties is essential. We theoretically investigate the dynamics of a DNA dodecamer and its complexes with two common ligands, Hoechst33258 and the ethidium cation, by means of classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We study the structural relation between the flexibility of the double helix and the binding process. The dynamics of a terminal base pair unbinding is also analysed as an example of process that involves multiple energy minima in the underlying free energy landscape. [less ▲]

Abstract The aim of this article is to review some common opinions on changes in pubertal timing and shed new light both on the indicators used in assessing pubertal timing and the underlying mechanisms. While emphasis is usually on advancement in timing of female puberty, it appears that timing also changes in males, both towards earliness for the initial pubertal stages and towards lateness for the final stages. Such findings suggest that the environmental influences on pubertal timing are more complex than initially thought. Moreover, self-evaluated pubertal timing versus peers provides information that is not always consistent with observations at physical examination, suggesting that both perspectives should be considered, especially when studying the correlation between pubertal timing and psychosocial aspects. The mechanisms of changes in pubertal timing may involve both central neuroendocrine control and peripheral effects in tissues targeted by gonadal steroids. Though energy availability is certainly a clue to the mechanism of pubertal development, changes in the control of both energy balance and control of reproduction may vary under the influence of common determinants such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals. These effects can take place right before puberty as well as much earlier, during fetal and neonatal life. Finally, environmental factors can interact with genetic factors in determining changes in pubertal timing. Therefore, the variance in pubertal timing is no longer to be considered under the absolutely separate control of environmental and genetic determinants.  [less ▲]

Until recently, Kavet ethnic minority people traditionally practiced swidden agriculture and accessed natural resources in the uplands as an important, and unchallenged, part of their food system. This present study aims to trace the historical transformation of land use and tenure practices by Kavet communities in Kok Lak commune in the context of various state-driven and social-economic transformations. At commune level, we look at land use changes along with the migrations associated with these transformations. We also aim to understand how these changes have induced social differentiation between households as it relates to their entitlements, their production activities and their income structure. We examine the transformation in land use prompted by a multiplicity of drivers (demographic, economic, political, institutional and cultural) and in land tenure regimes through a land control matrix that differentiates between two types of rights (the land rights of the users and the rights to manage those rights given to the users). We discovered that the Kavet people have been resilient in protecting and promoting the core of their swidden territories and traditions; however, recent developments (including the establishment of the Virachey National Park (VNP) and market incentives) have considerably fragmented their land uses, cultural values and institutions. Through forced and free migration, some households have adopted new forms of agriculture (e.g. paddy, and annual and perennial non-rice crops) and converted their swidden land into cashew plantations, while others still rely solely on the practice of swidden agriculture as a lifestyle. By reviewing past transformations, by identifying the role swidden agriculture has had and the contribution it has made to the lives of the Kavet people, we recommend that efforts be made to conserve it in recognition of the pivotal role it plays in community development and to adopt better land use planning at local level. But proper consideration should also be given to the Kavet people who do not practice swidden agriculture. [less ▲]

PhaseChange Materials should be stable enough in their amorphous phase to achieve a durable data retention, however they should also be bad glass formers to be able to recrystallise at high speed. To understand these contradicting properties, we construct models of amorphous Ge–Sb–Te systems using Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and analyse the structures in relationwith the relevant crystalline state. We show that structural patterns that are precursors of the crystalline phase exist in the amorphous state and we identify the signature of the various types of local atomic orders in the X-ray absorption spectra that we compute using Density Functional Theory. We first analyse the mechanical properties of the amorphous phase in the framework of the Maxwell rigidity theory, showing that all efficient Phase Change Materials deviate from the perfect glass and are mechanically stressed-rigid. Additionally, we show that the stability of Phase Change Materials is related to the density of lowfrequency vibrational modes (Boson peak). We describe howan adequate doping can result in an increased stability of the amorphous phase while keeping intact the phase change ability of the material. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015. Do animals work? The way in which we answer this question could bear either the best or the worst consequences for animals. This indicates the pragmatism of such an inquiry. Acknowledging the cooperation and involvement of lab animals in the workload, as proposed by pharmacologist Michael Robin Chance in the 40s, could have changed the entire story. However, what does “work” mean? Donna Haraway defines “work” as a process that crafts identities and “response-abilities.” She writes: “animals as workers in labs, animals in all their worlds, are response-able in the same sense people are; that is, responsibility is a relationship crafted into intra-action through which entities, subjects and objects, come into being.” Sociologists and anthropologists have been reluctant to consider the idea that other beings could claim to work, apart from a few specific cases such as herding dogs, guide dogs, etc. My colleague, the French sociologist Jocelyne Porcher believes that breeding animals actively collaborate with their breeders. In her previous surveys, she heard anecdotes that suggested that cows and pigs deliberately ease the workload, taking initiative and subjectively getting involved in the work. However, when questioned on the issue, breeders adhere to common beliefs that only humans work, not animals. Looking deeper into the issue, we have discovered that the answer to this question fluctuates depending upon the way the question is posed and to whom the question is directed. [less ▲]

This article is concerned with the lack of effectiveness of contemporary critical theories in explaining the conditions for social change. These theories, I would argue, continue to rely on a narrow construction of social actors. Indeed from Lukács to Bourdieu or even Habermas, many significant intellectual developments have taken place which continue to be based on one key assumption: that individuals (workers, social actors, etc.) unconsciously reproduce the social structures of capitalism whilst being alienated by them. They accept the conditions enforced on them and no longer seek to rebel against a system which impoverishes not only their work and culture, but also their soul and their creativity. What is more: they ensure the reproduction of the system by seeking to engage in mass consumption at any cost, or by glorifying the dominant values. In this paper I would like to show that today, no new critical perspective has emerged out of this negative representation of the world. Indeed, critical works present ‘man’ living here and now as nothing more than a deeply bastardized being, corrupted, denatured, soiled by a civilizing process. What we have is in effect a social actor who, in Rousseau’s philosophical tradition, has been perverted by a civilizing process informed by modernity or capitalism. This view of social actors rests on a form of disgust towards the world. [less ▲]

Against the background of narratives fuelling big promises on the disruptive potential of 3D printing, this chapter seeks to describe a variety of contexts in which 3D printing technologies are expected to emerge over the next 15 years and exert their so-called disruptive potential. In the section 2, we first provide a brief introduction to 3D printing and we explain how it actually works. Next, in section 3, we describe the paradigmatic change allowed by 3D printing in the industrial sector with a shift toward mass-customization. In particular, we focus on the biomedical sector (section 3.1.), which is an interesting case in point because of the important number of innovations and the growth of 3D printed biomedical parts, a trend which is expected to continue in the future. To account for the dramatic, transversal, and transformative potential that 3D printing has in that whole sector, we first concentrate on 3D printing of biomedical instruments and implants for patients (section 3.1.1.) and, second, on additive bio- manufacturing of human tissues and organs (section 3.1.2.). Then, in the subsequent section 4 we address the expectations raised by 3D printing to empowering users in non-industrial domains (e.g. in fabrication laboratories or with desktop 3D printers at home). In section 5, we turn to discussing the impact of 3D printing on the governance actors and we raise important issues for further research in the political economy of 3D printing technologies. The chapter posits that 3D printing, and its governance, are closely associated with more participatory means of manufacturing (and of decision- making, through various governance structures) – but that, as things currently stand, such openness and participation does not play out in practice. There is a distinction between the rhetoric and reality of 3D printing, as one might expect in the case of newly emerging technologies. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
