[less ▲]

Endemic silk moths (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) in Madagascar have been collected and exploited for centuries by local populations either for food or as a source of silk cocoons from which textiles are made. Moth natural forest habitat has also been degraded, leading to a drastic decrease in silk moth populations. However, very few scientific reports highlighted these observations well known by the local people. We have inventoried silk moths species in tapia (Uapaca bojeri Baill.) forests located in the central Highlands of Madagascar. Inventories have been conducted during one year from August 2009 to July 2010 by sampling transects in Imamo forests. Three species of Lasiocampidae belonging to two genera were found: Borocera cajani Vinson, Borocera marginepunctata Guérin-Méneville and Europtera punctillata Guenée. These three silk moth species are endemic to Madagascar but only one (B. cajani) is commercially exploited in the silk industry. The habitat, host plants, abundance, life cycle and feeding behaviour of these species in their natural habitat are described. [less ▲]

Borocera cajani Vinson (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) is a silk moth endemic to Madagascar that is currently used to produce silk textiles. This silk moth is polyphagous and colonizes forests situated in the central Highlands, mainly constituted by tapia trees (Uapaca bojeri). Two host plants are commonly used by the caterpillar of this moth species: tapia and voafotsy (Aphloia theiformis). In this work we have evaluated parameters of different stages (survival rate, development duration, weight and size, fecundity, etc.) of B. cajani on both host plants. We have observed a 30% higher survival rate on U. bojeri. Larval and pupae duration were shorter on U. bojeri (64,8 ± 1,5 days) than on A. theiformis (87,4 ± 2,0 days). Cocoons were bigger when obtained from larvae fed on U. bojeri. This plant is therefore better for the development of B. cajani and should be used in intensive rearing of this silk moth. [less ▲]

The importance of tyrosine phosphorylation in normal cell physiology is well established, highlighted by the many human diseases that stem from abnormalities in protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) and protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) function. Contrary to earlier assumptions, it is now clear that both PTKs and PTPs are highly specific, non-redundant, and tightly regulated enzymes. Hematopoietic cells express particularly high numbers of PTKs and PTPs, and aberrant function of these proteins have been linked to many hematopoietic disorders. While PTK inhibitors are among FDA approved drugs for the treatment of leukemia and other cancers, efforts to develop therapeutics that target specific PTPs are still in its infancy. Here, we describe methods on how to evaluate effects of PTP inhibitors on T cell receptor signaling. Moreover, we provide a comprehensive strategy for compound prioritization, applicable to any drug discovery project involving T cells. We present a testing funnel that starts with relatively high-throughput luciferase reporter assays, followed by immunoblot, calcium flux, flow cytometry, and proliferation assays, continues with cytokine bead arrays, and finishes with specificity assays that involve RNA interference. We provide protocols for experiments in the Jurkat T cell line, but more importantly give detailed instructions, paired with numerous tips, on how to prepare and work with primary human T cells. Many transmission components contain moving parts, which can come into in contact. For example, the TORSEN differentials aremainly composed of gear pairs and thrust washers. The friction involved by contacts between these two parts is essential in the working principle of such differentials. In this chapter, two different contact models are presented and exploited for the modelling of differentials. The former uses an augmented Lagrangian technique or a penalty method and is defined between two flexible bodies or between a rigid body and a flexible structure. The second contact formulation is a continuous impact modelling based on a restitution coefficient. [less ▲]

Many plant and animal species are endemic in Madagascar. Among them, the silk moth Borocera cajani, commonly named landibe, and which belongs to the Lasiocampidae family. It is a pholyphageous insect, with five larval stages followed by a complete metamorphosis in the pupal stage to turn into an adult; a nocturnal butterfly. Landibe’s principal habitat is composed of an endemic plant species in Madagascar: tapia (Uapaca bojeri, Euphorbiaceae). For a long time, this ecosystem was disturbed and seriously threatened. Today, in the area of Arivonimamo, procedures to ensure its protection exist and the “Associations Communautaires de Base” (COBA) are in charge of their respect. Activities related to silk industry can consist in important incomes for many families in the area of Antananarivo, increasing their standard of living. This research aims at increasing our general knowledge on Borocera cajani and more especially on its larvae cycle. We studied the influence of two feeding plants; tapia and voafotsy (Aphloia theaeformis), on several parameters of larvae development cycle, and we compared wild and laboratory breeding. Preference tests have also been carried out in the laboratory. Results showed that feeding plants have influence on some of the parameters of the landibe’s cycle development. Wild and laboratory breeding comparison revealed an influence on animals’ size. Preference tests showed that larvae, which grow up on voafotsy, developed a preference for this feeding plant. Current publications and scientific knowledge on Borocera cajani are still too small. This study brings complementary and essential information on landibe, which should receive legal protection status in order to avoid its disappearance. [less ▲]

This article presents an overview of the tapia forest (Uapaca bojeri Baill.) in Madagascar in order to emphasize its importance for the development of the local population through improving household incomes. The tapia forest is a “socio-natural” formation, quasi-monospecific with regard to the tree stratum and endemic to Madagascar. It is only located in the Highlands of Madagascar. Alongside its ecosystem functions, the tapia forest hosts various resources, including non-timber forest products as well as timber itself, all of which play an important role in the informal local economy. However, the tapia ecosystem is threatened by human destruction through bush fires, production of firewood and charcoal, agriculture expansion, and by invasion of exotic species introduced for the purposes of reforestation. Subsequently, the sustainable management and protection of the tapia forest is essential in order to enable local populations to reap its benefits across several generations. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Over the course of last two decades, Mexico’s policies towards its population abroad has moved from a situation characterized by a general lack of interest to being one of the most active state in this field. The recent development of dual national and external voting policies as well as the creation of a dedicated government agency and of a consultative body all epitomize the radical change through which Mexico has gone. In this chapter, I argue that the transformation of Mexico’s attitude towards its emigrants is strongly connected to the evolution of its political regime characterized by a transition towards democracy, a strong desire to take part actively in the global economy and the increasing interest of regional actors in migration issues. Focusing on the issue of external voting, the chapter concludes by discussing the evolution of the power relations between the emigrant community and the Mexican state. [less ▲]

One of the pressing open problems of computational systems biology is the elucidation of the topology of gene regulatory networks (GRNs). In an attempt to solve this problem, the idea of systems genetics is to exploit the natural variations that exist between the DNA sequences of related individuals and that can represent the randomized and multifactorial perturbations necessary to recover GRNs. In this chapter, we present new methods, called GENIE3-SG-joint and GENIE3- SG-sep, for the inference of GRNs from systems genetics data. Experiments on the artificial data of the StatSeq benchmark and of the DREAM5 Systems Genetics challenge show that exploiting jointly expression and genetic data is very helpful for recovering GRNs, and one of our methods outperforms by a large extent the official best performing method of the DREAM5 challenge. This chapter has three objectives. Firstly, it is emphasized that tapia-dominated areas are spatially distributed into four localities situated on the so-called “Highlands”. Secondly, based on a global survey of available literature on tapia vegetation as well as on floristic surveys carried out in two entities (Arivonimamo et Ambatofinandrahana), an actualized list of their floristic diversity is composed. This list is partially illustrated with photographs and plates on a CD-ROM; vernacular names of the considered taxa are quoted. Finally a preliminary ecological interpretation is given based on the vegetation units and (or) ecological niches which are schematically represented. [less ▲]

Wild silk in Madagascar is made by endemic silk moths of the genus Borocera and locally named landibe. In this study, we tried to shed light on the social aspects of the wild silk sector, by understanding the interactions between the actors of the sector. We interviewed different professionals such as weavers and cocoon harvesters in the country and in the city. The study area was located in villages of the Itasy region, situated 50 km West of the capital, Antananarivo. Moreover, people working in the silk sector were also interviewed in Antananarivo. Analysis of the wild silk’s sector revealed complex dynamics. Each player has his own purpose, not the least of which is finding additional revenues with silk. In the country, cocoon harvesting and weaving are complementary activities to agriculture. The collective actors of the silk sector are the VOI (Local Communities) who are managing tapia woods, weaving women associations, and NGOs who try to develop silk sector in the region. These collective actors cooperate with the local population, but it appears that some conflicts and misunderstandings arise between individuals and associations, which could hamper meeting the shared goals of silk sector development and preservation of the natural environment. This paper revisits the performance of funds of hedge funds after the crisis using normalized risk-adjusted performance measures based on multi-factor models. First, we develop performance measures able to capture the variety of systematic risk sources. Second, we deal with the impact of smoothing on the risk return properties of FoHF using an adjustment technic for illiquidity. Third, we implement unbiased estimators to correct for the econometric bias induced by errors-in-variables (EIV) in asset pricing models. With these different adjustments, we analyze the persistence and stability of performance measures before and after the crisis for a data base of funds of hedge funds. Our results clearly show that the normalized risk-adjusted performance measures corrected for smoothing effect and EIV outperform the alternatives measures before and after the crisis. [less ▲]

The analysis of individual mutual funds survivorship reveals that a model based on the consideration of a wide class of performance measures can be a solid predictor of their disappearance. Given the importance of performance fees, this phenomenon is likely to be all the more relevant for funds of hedge funds. In this analysis, we apply a diagnostics methodology to predict the disappearance of funds of hedge funds from databases, which we consider a sign of their attrition. Our research shows that prediction is also possible for these types of hedge funds, and even that the predictive ability of the model is stronger than for mutual funds. [less ▲]

In Burundi, family farming occupies more than 90% of the active population and plays a vital role in food production and participates in the formation of more than 50% of GDP. Before the civil war of 1993, Kirundo was deemed “breadbasket of the country” because it fed many parts of Burundi in particular food legumes and cereals, so that family farming was market-oriented. Today, this is the first province in Burundi that shows a high rate of malnutrition, poverty increased and a sharp decline in agricultural production up more than 56.6% from 1996 to 2009. The objective of this study is to understand the impact of land conflict on the socio-economic development of farmers in Kirundo Province. To conduct this study, an initial survey was carried out in 2010 among 355 randomly selected farmers in all communes of Kirundo. To understand the scope of land conflicts and its consequences on the socio-economic households, a second survey was conducted among 30 people who came to the High Court of Kirundo. The study was completed by collecting data on the courts of the residential suburbs of Bugabira, Busoni, Gitobe, Kirundo, Ntega and Vumbi communes, and also on the High Court of Kirundo province. Analysis of the results shows that land conflicts in the region have the following consequences: huge losses of agricultural production, substantial legal costs and the imprisonment and killing of people because of land conflicts. The problem of state/parameter estimation represents a key issue in crop models which are nonlinear, non-Gaussian and include a large number of parameters. The prediction errors are often important due to uncertainties in the equations, the input variables, and the parameters. The measurements needed to run the model (input data), to perform calibration and validation are sometimes not numerous or known with some uncertainty. In these cases, estimating the state variables and/or parameters from easily obtained measurements can be extremely useful. In this work, we address the problem of modeling and prediction of leaf area index and soil moisture (LSM) using state estimation. The performances of various conventional and state-of-the-art state estimation techniques are compared when they are utilized to achieve this objective. These techniques include the extended Kalman filter (EKF), unscented Kalman filter (UKF), particle filter (PF), and the more recently developed technique variational Bayesian filter (VF). The objective of this work is to extend the state and parameter estimation techniques (i.e., EKF, UKF, PF and VF) to better handle nonlinear and non-Gaussian processes without a priori state information, by utilizing a time-varying assumption of statistical parameters. In this case, the state vector to be estimated at any instant is assumed to follow a Gaussian model, where the expectation and the covariance matrix are both random. The randomness of the expectation and the covariance of the state/parameter vector are assumed here to further capture the uncertainty of the state distribution. One practical choice of these distributions can be a Gaussian distribution for the expectation and a multi-dimensional Wishart distribution for the covariance matrix. The assumption of random mean and random covariance of the state leads to a probability distribution covering a wide range of tail behaviors, which allows discrete jumps in the state variables. [less ▲]

- Addresses key issues for the allocation of taxing powers in the European Union - Looks at fundamental questions of direct taxation - Covers a broad range of aspects such as limited tax liability, losses or transfer pricing The contributions to this volume try to overcome the traditional approach of the judicature of the European Court of Justice regarding the application of the fundamental freedoms in direct taxation that is largely built on a non-discrimination test. In this volume, outstanding authors cover various aspects of the national and international tax order when European law meets domestic taxation. This includes testing traditional pillars of income taxation – ability-to-pay, source and residence, abuse of law, arm’s length standard – with respect to their place in the emerging European tax order as well as substantial matters of co-existence between different tax systems that are not covered by the non-discrimination approach such as mutual recognition, cross-border loss compensation or avoidance of double taxation. The overarching goal is to flesh out the extent to which a substantive “allocation of taxing powers” within the European Union is on its way to a convincing overall framework and to stretch the discussion “beyond discrimination”.
