Air entrained has become one of the main variables in the study of large spillways performance since it can help avoiding cavitation. Moreover, high rates of air concentration produce significant bulking of the flow as well as a water–solid friction reduction, generating flow acceleration and increasing maximum velocities at the inlet of the energy dissipation structure. Air entrained also affects turbulence inside the flow producing different energy dissipation rates. Aerated spillways physical models are affected by scale effects, with Weber and Reynolds numbers being usually too low to adequately reproduce observed flows. Alternatively, simulation of air–water flows can be carried out by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques in 1:1 scale. However, 3D numerical simulations of spillway flows are time expensive and air–water interfaces need fine resolution meshes which would require extensive computing. Thus, the use of a subgrid scale in air entrainment models can be useful to predict the inception point and the air concentration profile of the flow along the spillway. Computational techniques can handle a more accurate momentum distribution over the spillway sections with affordable costs. In this research, FLOW-3D® routine for turbulent air entrainment is used, coupled with variable density evaluation. VOF and κ-ε RNG turbulence model are also employed. Over 200 spillway flow simulations have been carried out to obtain optimal values of the air-entrainment model parameters, which can be used in future spillway simulations. The calibration of the model is carried out employing prototype data. Interesting conclusions are obtained concerning air entrainment model performance. [less ▲]

In this paper, we develop a fully-fledged postal market model to assess the extent of competition in the mail market in a context of declining mail volumes due to e-substitution. Our focus will be on the Belgian market situation that is interesting for at least two reasons. First, the homogenous nature of the country implies that the extent of the entrant's market coverage will be either limited to the few very densely populated areas or large covering the whole country at the exception of the few very sparely populated areas. Second, because strong licensing requirements -including coverage constraints- are imposed on competing postal operators and they may constitute barrier to entry. Our model allows us to estimate the extent of entry, the cost of meeting the licensing requirements for potential entrants and the impact of entry on the cost of the universal service. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Lie group integrators preserve by construction the Lie group structure of a nonlinear configuration space. In multibody dynamics, they support a representation of (large) rotations in a Lie group setting that is free of singularities. The resulting equations of motion are differential equations on a manifold with tangent spaces being parametrized by the corresponding Lie algebra. In the present paper, we discuss the time discretization of these equations of motion by a generalized-alpha Lie group integrator for constrained systems and show how to exploit in this context the linear structure of the Lie algebra. This linear structure allows a very natural definition of the generalized-alpha Lie group integrator, an efficient practical implementation and a very detailed error analysis. Furthermore, the Lie algebra approach may be combined with analytical transformations that help to avoid an undesired order reduction phenomenon in generalized-alpha time integration. After a tutorial-like step-by-step introduction to the generalized-alpha Lie group integrator, we investigate its convergence behaviour and develop a novel initialization scheme to achieve second-order accuracy in the application to constrained systems. The theoretical results are illustrated by a comprehensive set of numerical tests for two Lie group formulations of a rotating heavy top. [less ▲]

Fine limestone has been added to Portland cement for decades. This is normally achieved by “intergrinding” it with Portland cement clinker in the cement mill. Under normal operating conditions this will result in a surface area of the limestone fraction of between 800 and 1100 m2/kg (depending on the grindability of the limestone) for a surface area of the clinker fraction of in the region of 400 m2/kg. Less often the limestone is ground separately and blended with Portland cement. Separate addition of limestone to concrete as a clinker replacement is not widely practiced in conventional concrete, but is used as filler for modifying the rheology of self-compacting concrete. In the early literature limestone was generally regarded as “inert filler”. For this reason it has e.g. become the main constituent in most masonry cements where high levels of replacement of the Portland cement are needed to reproduce the properties of traditional lime mortars. However, for its application in concrete, which is the primary focus of this report, the limestone’s contribution to the hydration reactions can be significant when it is co-ground with the clinker, albeit in relatively small amounts. So much so that it can arguably be classified as an SCM alongside GBFS and fly ash. The first significant use of limestone in general purpose Portland cement took place during WWII when it was used in several European countries to cut costs and increase output (Lea, 1970). Its widespread use today can be traced back to the 1973 oil crisis, with France, which had low production of fly ash and blast furnace slag, leading the way. The Portland limestone cements in the European cement standard EN 197-1 (2001), were adopted more or less un-changed from the French standard NF P 15-301 (1981). A systematic review of all standards and specifications for limestone and Portland limestone cements is beyond the scope of this report. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The study of the ‘smell of death’ is an important part of the thanatochemistry, the chemistry of death. Since 2004 (Vass et al. 2004), an increasing number of studies have been conducted to understand the body decomposition process by measuring the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) released by decaying bodies. However, the chemical profi le of the decomposition odor is still far for from being resolved. Indeed, the complexity of the VOC mixture makes it diffi cult to be carried out by classical GC-MS. A better understanding of the decomposition process could thus possibly be achieved using a multidimensional technique such as Comprehensive Two Dimensional Gas Chromatography coupled to time of fl ight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS). The high peak capacity of this multidimensional technique combined with the visualization power of multivariate statistical methods allows a deeper understanding of complex VOC matrices. [less ▲]

In this chapter, I analyse how national courts are made to participate in the framework of EU competition law enforcement. It is submitted that EU law provides numerous help lines allowing those courts to participate, yet those help lines often also make it difficult for national judges to find out exactly how and when they have to apply EU competition law. Colorectal cancers (CRC) are known to be related to inflammatory conditions, and inflammatory bowel diseases increase the relative risk for developing CRC. The use of anti-inflammatory drugs prevents the development of colorectal cancer.Several molecular mediators are connecting the pathways that are involved in inflammatory conditions and in carcinogenesis. By the way these pathways are tightly interwoven, with the consequence that a deregulation at the level of any of these molecular mediators can affect the others.MiRNAs are demonstrated to be deregulated in inflammatory bowel diseases and in colorectal cancer. Moreover, they target several molecular mediators that connect inflammation to cancer, and they are thus implicated in the route from inflammation to colorectal cancer. This chapter will focus on the miRNAs that are jointly deregulated in inflammatory bowel disease and in colorectal cancer. Their role on the regulation of the molecular mediators and pathways that link inflammation to cancer will be described. [less ▲]

This conceptual paper makes the case for a strong embeddedness at all stages of sustainable entrepreneurship – opportunity identification and/or creation, evaluation, and exploitation. This strong embeddedness is argued to drive entrepreneurs towards sustainability through the set-up of long-term social contracts with multiple stakeholders. Building upon extant literature on sustainable, social, and environmental entrepreneurship and the framework of stakeholder theory, as well as the embeddedness argument, a model is developed and propositions are suggested. Theoretical and practical implications are derived from these propositions. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a brain protective structure composed by endothelial cells, astrocytes and pericytes characterized by specific transport systems expressed on their surface. Moreover, the tight junctions, in the paracellular space, and the adherens junctions, in the basolateral space of the endothelial cells create a physical barrier hardly crossable from the most part of common drugs. Despite the BBB is vital for the central nervous system (CNS), it restricts drug delivery to this tissue. To overcome this obstacle many drug delivery systems (DDS) have been developed. Polymeric nanocarriers, solid lipid nanocarriers (SLN) and liposomes are developed to deliver drugs otherwise not able to pass the BBB, due to their physico-chemical characteristics. Besides their capacity to pass biological barriers, the potential advantages of nanocarriers are their capability to load a high quantity of drug with low cytotoxicity. [less ▲]

The superconducting HTS hollow cylinder has been one of the first geometries to demonstrate its utility as an efficient passive magnetic shield, and particularly for DC magnetic shielding. The shielding performances can be characterized by two parameters: (i) the shielding factor SF, defined as the ratio between the applied magnetic induction Bapp and the magnetic induction inside the shield Bin and (ii) the threshold induction Blim for which the shielding factor becomes lower than a given level. The main drawback of the hollow cylinder geometry is that the shielding is only effective in the central region of the tube and decreases towards the tube extremities because of the field penetration through the open ends. In order to improve the performances at tube extremities and hence increase the shielded volume, the tube should be closed. This can be achieved by using a superconducting vessel or by closing one or both extremities with a cap. This chapter describes the experimental and the numerical analysis of the DC shielding performances of a Bi-2223 tube closed by a superconducting Bi-2223 cap, for an axial configuration. The first part is dedicated to the experimental study of two tubes of different lengths when they are closed at one extremity or closed at both extremities. We also study the effect of the gap size between the cap and the tube. In the second part, we use numerical simulations to highlight the possible improvements and to optimize the design. In particular we study the influence of the critical current density and of the thickness of the cap. [less ▲]
