In dairy cattle, unlike other species, performance recording schemes make it possible to provide advisory tools which integrate information across the whole population. Mid-infrared (MIR) analysis of milk provides a spectrum for each individual cow’s milk sample. The MIR spectrum represents the whole milk composition and can be used to assess the status of the animal (e.g. health, pregnancy, feeding). The main objective of the European project OptiMIR (INTERREG IVB North West Europe Programme) is to develop innovative advisory tools based on the MIR data collected by milk recording organizations. One of the objectives is to develop a tool to assess the pregnancy status of cows. The tool uses an innovative comparison of observed spectra with expected spectra predicted from a set of spectra with a known cow status, in this case open. Development was carried out using Walloon milk recording data. A training dataset (348,191 spectral data from 49,849 cows) was used to obtain residual spectra (i.e. difference between observed and expected spectra). Based on the fact that the pregnancy status of all cows was known, a predictive discriminant function was constructed using 7,524 residual spectra randomly selected from the initial dataset. The discriminant function was then applied to the rest of the dataset (24,278 residual spectra) for validation. When considering the period from 21 to 50 days after insemination, the error rate was about 7.5 with a specificity of 95.3 and a sensitivity of 87.2\%. These results showed a high potential for directly using the MIR spectrum of milk to detect a change in the pregnancy status of dairy cows. This methodology can also be applied to predict other types of physiological status changes (e.g. udder health related) and can be used on other types of biomarker data (i.e. collected from on-farm sensors). Similarly, integration of on-farm information on expected pregnancy status could improve the off-farm tool presented here. [less ▲]

Legal mobilization, inside or outside the courtroom ? The case of workplace discrimination in Sweden and Belgium -- In the field of non-discrimination, European dirctives and transnational networks for equality suggest common frames in order to uniformize legal practices among member states. Among others, they require each state to guarantee access to justice for plaintiffs who have experienced discrimination and for organizations which promote their rights. The implementation of these common norms and frames varies across the countries. From an empirical investigation on workplace discrimination, this chapter examines how equality agencies mobilize, or do not mobilize, the labor court in two countries, Sweden and Belgium. The author shows that the role of equality agencies in labor issues in each national setting influences their choices and opportunities to mobilize the law, inside and outside the courtroom, to fight workplace discrimination. In return, their activity also creates new legal opportunities to promote workers’ rights. [less ▲]

This chapter suggests that the notion of ‘social enterprise’ is useful to capture the DNA of organizations focused on fair trade and to locate them within a broader organizational taxonomy. Without seeking to impose a new term that may not resonate for certain actors or regions, this chapter aims to bring two contributions to fair trade research and practice. First, it is suggested that the social enterprise approach is particularly useful as an analytical tool enabling researchers and other stakeholders to capture the evolution and diversification of organizational models in fair trade. Second, the use of a broader organizational approach that is not specific to the sole fair trade sector allows for connections with similar organizations in other sectors and brings a shift from considering mainly what the organizations do (fair trade in this case) towards also addressing what they are (innovative social enterprise models combining market dynamics with social purpose). This chapter is structured as follows. First, the concept of social enterprise is introduced and discussed. Then, the evolution of the organizational landscape of fair trade (in the North) is summarized. Finally, fair trade organizations are examined in the light of the social enterprise concept, with illustrations from a study in four European countries (Huybrechts 2010a; 2012). [less ▲]

The majority of children in Burkina Faso undertake work and, compared to other West African countries, it has the highest rate of children involved in hazardous work (Diallo 2008; NISD 2008), which is one working child out of two. Based on a qualitative survey, this chapter presents the perspectives of Burkinabe children working in two of the hazardous sectors: a quarry and an artisanal mine. The findings show that children acknowledge very difficult working conditions in these sites. However a variety of reasons maintain them in work, which they perceive as a solution and thus challenging action against child labour in Burkina Faso. [less ▲]

The accessibility and the location of new and existing urban projects are key factors for the sustainability of our built environments. Previous scientific research have shown that both the location of neighborhoods (that is to say their proximity to work places, schools facilities, services etc.) as well as their accessibility (proximity of infrastructures, bus services, etc.) have a huge impact on modal share (especially the ability to use active commuting for daily travel), travelled distances and thus on emissions of greenhouse gas and health of inhabitants. In a view of sustainability, the location of new and planned urban projects should be carefully assessed in order to favor the development of local communities encouraging the use of public transportation and active commuting (foot, bicycle). Local authorities should also be able to assess the potentialities of different Brownfield and Greenfields on their territories and define where to authorize the development of new urban projects, in order to inscribe them in a concrete vision of sustainability. In the first part of the chapter, we propose a synthetic review of the scientific literature dealing with the relationships between location, accessibility and commuting. Then, we analyze how location and accessibility are taken into account in several existing neighborhood sustainability assessment tools. Based on the ascertainments that sustainable mobility, location and accessibility criteria are given less importance than criteria related to building energy performance or green spaces and, that existing sustainability assessment tools are mainly developed for experts, we propose two frameworks to assess the location and the accessibility of buildings and neighborhoods. These two frameworks are especially designed for a non-expert audience (citizens, local authorities, developers, etc.), within the Walloon (Belgian) context. To conclude the chapter, the reproducibility of our work is discussed and our main findings are summarized. [less ▲]

This article is concerned with the lack of effectiveness of contemporary critical theories in explaining the conditions for social change. These theories, I would argue, continue to rely on a narrow construction of social actors. Indeed from Lukács to Bourdieu or even Habermas, many significant intellectual developments have taken place which continue to be based on one key assumption: that individuals (workers, social actors, etc.) unconsciously reproduce the social structures of capitalism whilst being alienated by them. They accept the conditions enforced on them and no longer seek to rebel against a system which impoverishes not only their work and culture, but also their soul and their creativity. What is more: they ensure the reproduction of the system by seeking to engage in mass consumption at any cost, or by glorifying the dominant values. In this paper I would like to show that today, no new critical perspective has emerged out of this negative representation of the world. Indeed, critical works present ‘man’ living here and now as nothing more than a deeply bastardized being, corrupted, denatured, soiled by a civilizing process. What we have is in effect a social actor who, in Rousseau’s philosophical tradition, has been perverted by a civilizing process informed by modernity or capitalism. This view of social actors rests on a form of disgust towards the world. [less ▲]

This paper examines some indicators regarding performance of the economy, agriculture, employment, wealth, education and quality of life, during the period 2003-2013 (when data are available), comparing the situation for the Warmia and Mazury voivodship, Eastern Poland and Poland's average as a reference. It is observed that the situation in the poorest Polish regions improved in absolute terms, though the gap with the rest of the country is still remaining. So, the development programmes, including the EU policies dealing with Eastern Poland, can be considered a half-success. [less ▲]

Computational Biology has increasingly become an important tool for biomedical and translational research. In particular, when generating novel hypothesis despite fundamental uncertainties in data and mechanistic understanding of biological processes underpinning diseases. While in the present book, we have reviewed the necessary background and existing novel methodologies that set the basis for dealing with uncertainty, there are still many “grey”, or less well-defined, areas of investigations offering both challenges and opportunities. This final chapter in the book provides some reflections on those areas, namely: (1) the need for novel robust mathematical and statistical methodologies to generate hypothesis under uncertainty; (2) the challenge of aligning those methodologies in a context that requires larger computational resources; (3) the accessibility of modeling tools for less mathematical literate researchers; and (4) the integration of models with –omics data and its application in clinical environments. [less ▲]

This chapter aims to provide an introduction to the different ways in which uncertainty can be dealt with computational modelling of biological processes. The first step is model establishment under uncertainty. Once models have been established, data can further be used to select which of the proposed models best meets the predefined criteria. Subsequently, parameter values can be optimized for a specific model configuration. Sensitivity analyses allow to assess the influence of the previous choices on the model output. Additionally, model adaptation permits to focus on specific aspects of the model without losing its global predictive capacity. Finally, predictions with the established models should also consider the effect of uncertainty in the model development process. [less ▲]

In late modernity societies where pursuit of career in an unstable and rapidly changing occupational structure is so difficult, motivation fueling vocational constructing behaviors appears to be a prerequisite of success. However, motivational processes are only half of the story. In order to overcome internal or external obstacles to a confident and peaceful reflection on their career development, individuals need more than ever to bring into play volition, that is, the capacity to regulate psychological functions such as cognition, motivation, and emotion in order to determine which motivational tendencies are implemented, when, and how. The first aim of this contribution is to present some aspects of this overarching concept originating in experimental and social psychology, and recently also considered by cognitive neurosciences. Taking the psychology of action control as a lens of analysis, the chapter outlines (1) action versus state orientation affect–regulatory competences embedded in Personality Systems Interactions theory (Kuhl, 2000a, 2000b), which proposes an explanation of functional relationships between cognitive and affective systems underlying action; (2) implementation intentions (Gollwitzer, 1993, 1999), that is, a kind of specific plans which differs from goal intentions and may be activated in the postdecisional pre-action phase of the Rubicon Model of Action Phases. As a second aim of the chapter, some applications of these volitional constructs to the vocational domain, until now largely or completely unexplored, are proposed in order to suggest how leading theories in the field can enrich concrete practices to help students and clients, faced to an unsecured world, volitionally construct the future of their career. The alternative or noncanonical NF-kappaB pathway regulates the generation of p52-containing NF-kappaB dimers (e.g., p52/RelB) through a partial degradation (called processing) of the precursor p100 into p52. This pathway is activated by a subset of non-death TNF receptor members, which ultimately activate two kinases: NIK (NF-kappaB-Inducing Kinase) and IKKalpha (Inhibitor of kappaB Kinase alpha). These kinases create a phosphodegron for the E3 ligase SCF-beta-TrCP that covalently binds K48-linked polyubiquitin chain onto p100 prior to its proteasomal processing. The resulting p52-containing complexes translocate into the nucleus to activate target genes involved in secondary lymphoid organ development, B cell survival or in osteoclastogenesis. We describe in this chapter straightforward methods to monitor the activation of the alternative NF-kappaB pathway. These methods uncover cytosolic and nuclear biochemical modifications of key proteins of the alternative NF-kappaB pathway required prior to the transcription of NF-kappaB target genes. [less ▲]

L’alcool remonte le moral. Une petite cuite n’a jamais tué personne. [less ▲]

For decades, immigration has been at the core of the political and social debate in Europe. In the post-crisis environment, recent events have inflamed the migration agenda further, as freedom of movement is an essential decision-making point in the planned referendum on European Union (EU) membership in the United Kingdom, and the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean is testing the limits of the EU and of its member states to manage migration in a humane and fair way. Large- scale immigration has long challenged the Westphalian tradition of nation-state sovereignty in Europe (Joppke, 1998). However, these tensions have only increased over the last decade, following conflicts in Europe’s neighbourhood, the fall of the ‘Iron Curtain’ and the eastern enlargement of the EU, or the 2008 global economic and financial crisis. If until recently the most controversial aspect of immigration has been migrants and asylum-seekers from outside the EU and an invisibility of European migration and European migrants, in the last few years we observe that the very principle of migration from the other member states is challenged in a systematic manner for the first time since its proclamation in the Treaty of Rome (establishing the European Economic Community in 1958). The rebellion against the status quo on freedom of movement of people in the EU is led by Western European states. They are the almost exclusive receivers of EU migration, either from the other Western European states, or from the new member states in Central and Western Europe. This essay traces the transformation of EU migration over the last decade, following the most recent enlargements and the south–north migration which has re-emerged since the financial crisis, and examines the causes of an unprecedented contestation of free movement rights. This work presents a mixed penalty-duality formulation from an augmented Lagrangian approach for treating the contact inequality constraints. The augmented Lagrangian approach allows to regularize the non differentiable contact terms and gives a C1 differentiable saddle-point functional. The relative displacement of two contacting bodies is described in the framework of the Finite Element Method (FEM) using the mortar method, which gives a smooth representation of the contact forces across the bodies interface. To study the robustness and performance of the proposed algorithm, validation numerical examples with finite deformations and large slip motion are presented. [less ▲]

This paper looks at migration and the politics of representation in contemporary Italian cinema by comparing one of the Nigerian videos recently produced in Italy, Akpegi Boys (2009), directed by Vincent Omoigui and Simone Sandretti, with two recent Italian films which portray the experience of Nigerian migrants in Italy, Marco and Antonio Manetti’s Torino Boys (1997), and Enrico Verra’s Sotto il Sole Nero (2004). Interestingly enough both films take, implicitly and explicitly, Nigerian videos as a narrative and aesthetic reference in order to build an innovative representation of Nigerian migrants in Italy, thus positioning themselves in an original position vis-à-vis the growing corpus of Italian films about migration emerged over the past two decades. As this paper argues, these three films allow us to identify the emergence of what could be defined as an “anti-humanitarian” representation of migration. By defining their attitude as anti-humanitarian, I do not intend to mean that these films assume a negative or derogatory perspective on migration. On the contrary, what I intend to highlight is that these are films that, by using a number of specific narrative and aesthetic strategies such as, among others, the reference to Nollywood commercial and exploitation filmmaking style, make an attempt to go beyond the binary representation that much debate on migration in Italy implicitly embraces, a representation according to which the migrant is either seen as an invader or as a victim. By playing with cultural references that belong to the contemporary cultural universe of Nigerian migrants themselves, these films suggest the possibility of building a bridge between the diverging ways in which Italians and (in this case Nigerian) migrants look at migration. This encounter has the potential of helping Italian directors and intellectuals in deconstructing their hegemonic gaze on migrants and migration phenomena, and has the possibility to inaugurate an healthy as much as needed process of decentralization and provincialization of singularly “Italian” perspectives on migration in Italy. In the academic debate about the southern Nigerian video industry (Nollywood), the role of women has generally been underestimated. Articles that focus on the connection between women and the video industry tend to analyse the discourse about gender that videos produce and circulate and see the videos as propagator of sexist and patriarchal stereotypes about women and their place in society. Some analysts have nuanced these criticisms by showing the variety and complexity of the gender discourse that videos circulate, and by emphasizing that the video stories make new forms of female social mobility visible. However, almost no attention has been given to the analysis of how the industry, as a form of business, has opened new spaces for women’s economic and social mobility. In this chapter I make an attempt at addressing this gap by focusing on the experience of a number of women who have successfully established themselves as entrepreneurs in the southern Nigerian video industry. Thanks to their specific business strategies, they have created new spaces for female economic and social mobility in this sector, and have gained pronounced social visibility, thus contributing to the construction of the collective imagination of women’s social and economic success.
