Our paper reconsiders the religious and social significance of a corpus of statuettes representing crouching children with jewels and amulets, principally dedicated in shrines on Cyprus from about the mid–fifth century BC down to the Hellenistic period. The most plausible interpretation of these statues, that of votive dedications aiming to evoke divine protection on small children, will be substantiated by discussion of discovery contexts and of the significance of amulets and other objects decorating these statues, as well as by broader considerations on the place of small children in temples. The variety of configurations of these statues will also be taken into account in order to discuss the possibility of various interpretations instead of one single interpretative paradigm. [less ▲]

This article deals with Congolese workers’ right to privacy and corporate civil liability in relation to information and communication technology. Information and communication technologies are necessary to labour relations. A conflict may arise between workers’ right to privacy and employers’ right to monitor the use of work tools by their employees so as to avoid being held to their social responsibility in case of damage to a third party. Employees have a duty to the employer and owner of the tool. Employers may be held responsible for misuse of work tools. Therefore employers have a right to monitor their employees, but this right should not impinge on workers’ right to privacy. This conflict might jeopardize working relations. After monitoring a worker an employer may regard his conduct as gross misconduct and terminate the contract. The latter can fight this impingement on privacy by referring to his right to privacy. The right to monitor perpetually competes with the right to privacy. The former is necessary to limit the latter, none of them is absolute. This article aims to clarify this issue and bases itself in particular on the Congolese Labour legislation. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

In this chapter Double Cup Extrusion Test (DCET) is modelled using the finite element method with the help of the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formalism. DCET is a tribological test involving very large deformations which are traditionally dealt with complicated and costly remeshing algorithms. Since the topology of ALE meshes should remain constant throughout the simulation, twovery thin layers of auxiliary elements are added to the initial mesh of the billet where the material is expected to flow. This numerical trick is combined with an original and efficient node relocation procedure which allows the model to take into account complex geometries of punches. The presented model is firstly validated for limited punch strokes thanks to a purely Lagrangian simulation. It is then compared with results from the literature. Eventually the general nature and the effectiveness of this numerical strategy is demonstrated by a fully-coupled thermomechanical simulation of thixoforming where the final shape of the billet is compared to experimental measurements. In this paper I discuss the dossier of cults for Arsinoe II Philadelphos to investigate how the worship of a sovereign could concretely become a constitutive part of the religious life of the communities composing a kingdom. I argue that in order to let the worship of a sovereign survive the political context in which it was first conceived, a certain degree of freedom and of individual initiative must have been encouraged among potential worshippers, so that the cults could become part of a durable shared religious and political identity connecting the individual with the collective sphere.

Although disorders of consciousness (DOCs) demonstrate widely varying clinical presentations and patterns of structural injury, global down-regulation and bilateral reductions in metabolism of the thalamus and frontoparietal network are consistent findings. We test the hypothesis that global reductions of background synaptic activity in DOCs will associate with changes in the pattern of metabolic activity in the central thalamus and globus pallidus. We compared 32 [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose PETs obtained from severely brain-injured patients (BIs) and 10 normal volunteers (NVs). We defined components of the anterior forebrain mesocircuit on high-resolution T1-MRI (ventral, associative, and sensorimotor striatum; globus pallidus; central thalamus and noncentral thalamus). Metabolic profiles for BI and NV demonstrated distinct changes in the pattern of uptake: ventral and association striatum (but not sensorimotor) were significantly reduced relative to global mean uptake after BI; a relative increase in globus pallidus metabolism was evident in BI subjects who also showed a relative reduction of metabolism in the central thalamus. The reversal of globus pallidus and central thalamus profiles across BIs and NVs supports the mesocircuit hypothesis that broad functional (or anatomic) deafferentation may combine to reduce central thalamus activity and release globus pallidus activity in DOCs. In addition, BI subjects showed broad frontoparietal metabolic down-regulation consistent with prior studies supporting the link between central thalamic/pallidal metabolism and down-regulation of the frontoparietal network. Recovery of left hemisphere frontoparietal metabolic activity was further associated with command following. [less ▲]

In this chapter, the authors describe the situation and challenges of Physical Education (PE) in Flanders and Wallonia in order to encourage young people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and to become critical sports consumers. In school-age children, about one out of six has problems with obesity/overweight. Compared with earlier measurements there is a trend of increasing sedentary time per day and not enough physical activity (PA) to reach international norms. Girls can be definitely considered as a public at risk regarding the physical activity component of their healthy lifestyle. In recent years, the emphasis has shifted from motor- and/or physical-testing towards the development of a positive attitude towards physical activity and being socially engaged. The main concern of the course-specific final attainment levels is teaching how to deal with the current movement culture of games, sports, fitness, and daily activity. In both regions, it is expected that children are taught to transfer movement and personally-related competencies learned in PE to other contexts. Initiatives to develop and enhance links between PE and other opportunities to be physically active in the wider community are receiving more attention during the last few years, but the situation is still far from ideal. Because of the complex role of promoting a healthy lifestyle during PE and in the whole school, there is a need to educate teachers during their teacher training and lifelong education on how to provide relevant choices, satisfying the need for autonomy. When, at the very end of the 19th century the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière began to develop their cinematograph business, the company dispatched its operators throughout the world, set up a system for producing copies of films and circulating them across the globe. Many films were named after streets, bridges, plazas, intersections, monuments, etc., and were categorised as “Views”. I distinguish here “views of” and “views on” the cities, so that we can describe the relationship between public space and geographical space. I approach this corpus via two dimensions. The first has to do with the relationship to the self that is offered to the social group through the images themselves: for the first time, public space and collective life are represented in the form of “a neutral mirror” of daily life, bearing the mark of the real. The second dimension concerns the overall setup of representation: spectators were in a sense “seeing themselves” as a group for the first time. Finally I will ask to what extent these views of/on the city and its collective life, produced in this way for public projection and mass exhibition, have changed the relationship of spectators to their own collective life space.

[less ▲]

The efficiency of transfer of gases and particles across the air-sea interface is controlled by several physical, biological and chemical processes in the atmosphere and water which are described here (including waves, large- and small-scale turbulence, bubbles, sea spray, rain and surface films). For a deeper understanding of relevant transport mechanisms, several models have been developed, ranging from conceptual models to numerical models. Most frequently the transfer is described by various functional dependencies of the wind speed, but more detailed descriptions need additional information. The study of gas transfer mechanisms uses a variety of experimental methods ranging from laboratory studies to carbon budgets, mass balance methods, micrometeorological techniques and thermographic techniques. Different methods resolve the transfer at different scales of time and space; this is important to take into account when comparing different results. Air-sea transfer is relevant in a wide range of applications, for example, local and regional fluxes, global models, remote sensing and computations of global inventories. The sensitivity of global models to the description of transfer velocity is limited; it is however likely that the formulations are more important when the resolution increases and other processes in models are improved. For global flux estimates using inventories or remote sensing products the accuracy of the transfer formulation as well as the accuracy of the wind field is crucial. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Dermatophytes infect the stratum corneum, nails and hair and are the most common agents of superficial mycoses in humans and animals. At present the genome of seven species has been sequenced. Between 22.5 and 24 Mb, the dermatophyte genomes are smaller in size than those of Coccidioides spp., Histoplasma spp. and Aspergillus spp. They are enriched for particular families of genes encoding secreted proteases, fungal specific kinases and proteins containing the LysM domain that is known to bind chitin. Different tools were recently developed to improve genetic analyses of dermatophytes, including efficient systems for targeted gene inactivation, gene silencing and broad transcriptional profiling techniques. Unexpectedly, gene expression profiles in the skin and hair of infected guinea pigs were found to be very different from those during in vitro growth using hard keratin as a substrate. Instead of the major in vitro expressed protease genes, others were found to only be activated in the skin of infected animals. In other words, the expression of putative virulence genes in dermatophytoses is more complex than previously assumed and likely depends on the site and type of infection. Further broad transcriptional profiling approaches during infections will give new insights into the pathogenic mechanisms of dermatophytes. [less ▲]

Crowdsourcing is today a revolutionary phenomenon changing pro- foundly our ways of communicating and producing. This article is interested in two issues that are crucial to its development and impacts. On one hand, it in- vestigates the forms and limits of crowdsourcing-related citizen empowerment. It is less concerned by the now recognized fact that crowdsourcing is empower- ing, but rather focuses on the ways it does so and the architecture of the rela- tions between citizens, scientists and institutions in this new context. On the other, it discusses the question of credibility of data produced through crowd- sourcing. This question represents, in fact, the Achilles’ heel that destabilizes the rise of citizen power in the face of experts and institutions. In its discussion of these two issues, the article relies on a particularly interesting case study: the online platform of participatory monitoring of biodiversity in Belgium Observa- tions.be. The creation of databases is an occasion here for reflexivity, learning and mobilisation. It is also an occasion for the liberation of the lay citizen, as an individual, from the straightjackets delimiting the institutional, scientific and associative spaces where he remains a subject, a collaborator or a member – al- ways in a subordinate position. He becomes a peer producer, partner and discussant. More important, learning and action networks that develop in the platform cut transversally through the three spheres. We find unexpected and new cooperations between citizen, scientists and civil servants. Likewise, ac- tions developed through the platform, mainly reporting, counting campaigns and early alert systems attest new modes of action that transgress the functional and ontological division of the three spheres. In the Middle Ages and premodern period, artisanal knowledge was transmitted via collections of recipes often grouped concomitantly with alchemical texts and instructions. Except for some very well-known artistic treatises, such as those by Eraclius or the Schedula diversarum artium, attributed to Theophilus, detection and identification of alchemical content within recipe books has been rare and fraught with difficulty. In a broad sense, alchemy could be defined as the ‘art of transmutation’, referring to the perfection of base or impure matter (often metal or stone) into perfect substances. In this context, alchemical procedures rely on artisanal or craft practices. Thus, any overlap between alchemy and art-technological procedures can be explained by the use of various identical materials and substances. Both are concerned with the description of colours—especially in regard to processes of change, the making of pigments, the production of artificial gemstones, the imitation of gold and silver and the transmutation of materials. Both require procedures involving precise and specifically defined actions, prescriptions and ingredients. So both use identical rhetorical recipe formulations that reflect a ‘step by step’ procedure. Assuming that alchemical and artistic texts have the same textual format, raises the question: did they also have the same methods of production and reception? Using a corpus of about forty manuscripts produced in Northern Europe between the fourteenth and the sixteenth centuries, this paper investigates the authorship and the context of production behind these writings, and scrutinizes the process of their compilation and dissemination. This serves, on a variety of levels, to elucidate information about their former nature and use. Finally, this paper examines the various ways alchemical and artisanal recipes were embedded within recipe books. It also proposes some clues to help in locating, identifying and demarcating this type of alchemical writing within the literature of recipes. [less ▲]

Because of the migration of bisphenol A from the food container to the food itself, the dietary ingestion has been estimated to be the main source for the general population. The Human exposure is increasingly studied either through the determination of dietary intake or more frequently via the measurement of urinary biomarker. This chapter is reporting results from roughly 200 publications dedicated to the bisphenol A levels found in the urine of the worldwide general population and measured within the different Human biomonitoring (HBM) studies conducted in this last decade. The exposure of children and pregnant women, both known as particularly vulnerable populations, is separately examined. The impact of the different legislations implemented in different countries to reduce children’s exposure on one hand and the different campaigns dedicated to the general public on the other hand, is not observed yet through temporal trend, likely because of the quite recent character of these actions. The advantages and the limitations of biomonitoring studies are also addressed, like the high within-person variability, the difficulties to access to reliable analytical techniques, the poor inter-study comparability, and the current need of longitudinal studies to establish links between BPA exposure and chronic diseases. I discuss the role of women and erōs in court poetry, by focusing on the ruling pair, i.e. the couple par excellence, and arguing that a gentle, reciprocal love within the bonds of marriage is presented as a crucial value, ensuring wealth and social order as well as the continuity of the dynasty itself. Because court life is a fashionable source of models for the elite, the poetic motif of requited love also influences the ideal depiction of love outside the ruling pair. After focusing on how internal patterns of relationship between characters shape the role of the queen in Alexandrian court poetry, I turn to non-literary, epigraphic evidence, in order to show how poetic representations of royal love integrate into a wider ideological program. Although my study mainly concerns Ptolemaic ruling pairs, I discuss some epigraphic parallels from the Seleucid dynasty as well, so that some general observations can be made on early Hellenistic queenship. This work deals with the numerical simulation and material flow visualization of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) processes. The fourth order Runge- Kutta (RK4) integration method is used for the computation of particle trajectories. The particle tracing method is used to study the effect of input process parameters and pin shapes on the weld quality. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the optimization of the FSW process. [less ▲]

The aeronautic industry is progressively introducing composite material in its products. Nowadays the fabrication begins to be mature, but huge efforts remains to be done on the experimental validation of these materials. More specifically, these composite materials introduce new type of defects (such as delamination, glue defects…) which need to be detected during the fabrication and maintenance to prevent failures. Moreover, the widespread use of these materials impose to the future detection instruments to be cheap, robust and easy to manipulate by non-specialists. Currently shearography is widely used for the detection of defects in the composite material. It is cheap, and relatively robust and flexible, but requires special qualification to interpret the shearograms and identify the defects. Therefore, efforts need to be carried to ease the interpretation of stereographic results for non-specialist of the technique. For this, we propose to automate the identification of defects in shearograms by the development of specific algorithms. In this paper, we present an innovative algorithm which realizes this operation. The process inspects the wrapped phase map obtained to identify high local fringe density. These potential detects are then analyzed and selected based on a set of parameter criteria such as dimensions, shape, and detection threshold. Successful results obtained on thermally solicited composite sample observed in industrial conditions are shown. We also discuss the limitations and perspective of this approach. [less ▲]
