Although Bharati Mukherjee is famous, or rather infamous, for her shameless embrace of America and its melting-pot ideology, in Desirable Daughters India, the homeland, is unexpectedly made to re-enter the stage of immigrant identity construction. In many respects it would seem that it has now become untenable to represent immigrant identity in terms of a one-directional movement from “India” to “America.” In Desirable Daughters the rise of India, the accelerated time/space compression of late capitalism, the post-90s paradigm shift in matters of transnational migration, the emphasis on return migrations and the emergence of a new global interaction indeed dramatically outflank Mukherjee’s previous narrative of American “exceptionalism” – which suddenly seems dated by comparison. By portraying the complex transnational network of connections operating between RIs (Resident Indians) and NRIs (Non Resident Indians), Mukherjee’s book gestures towards the “de-spatialization” of immigrant identity construction and its consequent “re-metaphorization” in terms of “time zones.” What is more, the increasingly compelling influence of contemporary India on the Indo-American diasporic subjectivity marks a “back to the future” return of the repressed which temporally repositions migrant identity between a ghostly time of repetition and a “hauntology” of new becomings. What Mukherjee suggests, I will contend, is that immigrant agency and self-fashioning cannot be associated anymore with the “pioneering spirit” of forward-looking characters that discard their “Indianness” upon (geographical) entry into the West. In my reading of Desirable Daughters the protagonist’s zigzagging path to self-transformation will be emphasized, so that it will become apparent that time has become the fourth space through which new spaces for diasporic identity can be renegotiated. The concept of precision agriculture consists to spatially manage crop management practices according to in-field variability. This concept is principally dedicated to variable-rate application of inputs such as nitrogen, seeds and phytosanitary products, allowing for a better yield management and reduction on the use of pesticides, herbicides … In this general context, the development of ICT techniques has allowed relevant progresses for Leaf Area Index (LAI) (Richardson et al., 2009), crop density (Saeys et al., 2009), stress (Zygielbaum et al., 2009) … Most of the tools used for Precision Farming utilizes optical and/or imaging sensors and dedicated treatments, in real time or not, and eventually combined to 3D plant growth modeling or disease development (Fournier et al., 2003 ; Robert et al., 2008). To evaluate yields or to better define the appropriated periods for the spraying or fertilizer input, to detect crop, weeds, diseases …, the remote sensing imaging devices are often used to complete or replace embedded sensors onboard the agricultural machinery (Aparicio et al., 2000). Even if these tools provide sufficient accurate information, they get some drawbacks compared to “proxy-detection” optical sensors: resolution, easy-to-use tools, accessibility, cost, temporality, precision of the measurement … The use of specific image acquisition systems coupled to reliable image processing should allow for a reduction of working time, a lower work hardness and a reduction of the bias of the measurement according to the operator, or a better spatial sampling due to the rapidity of the image acquisition (instead of the use of remote sensing). The early evaluation of yield could allow farmers, for example, to adjust cultivation practices (e.g., last nitrogen (N) input), to organize harvest and storage logistics. The optimization of late N application could lead to significant improvements for the environment, one of the most important concerns that precision agriculture aims to address. We propose in this chapter to explore the proxy-detection domain by focusing first on the development of robust image acquisition systems, and secondly on the use of image processing for different applications tied on one hand to wheat crop characterization, such as the detection and counting of wheat ears per m² (in a context of yield prediction) and the weed detection, and on the other hand to the evolution of seed development/germination performance of chicory achenes. Results of the different processing are presented in the last part just before a conclusion. [less ▲]

Despite widespread acknowledgement that social entrepreneurship and social enterprise remain highly contextual –and, therefore, contestable– notions which can be interpreted in various ways depending on the ideology and the goals of the institutions championing them (Dart 2004; Dey & Steyaert 2010; Nicholls 2010c), there are common features upon which most scholars and commentators can agree. This chapter aims to capture the essence of what social entrepreneurship is and also of what it is not. The chapter is structured as follows. The following section examines the concept of social entrepreneurship and reviews a number of definitions in order to highlight common features. Then, social entrepreneurship is compared with, and differentiated from, related –but distinctive– concepts. After this, the fourth section looks at the origins and drivers of social entrepreneurship in an historical perspective. Finally, this chapter concludes by suggesting a number of challenges for practice, policy and research in this field. [less ▲]

Dans une perspective historique, ce chapitre cherche à comprendre comment le travail des enfants a été construit comme « problème » dans les politiques publiques au Burkina Faso. En remontant aux politiques coloniales françaises dans le pays, il se propose de répondre à la question suivante : face à l’émergence et au renforcement des politiques publiques de lutte contre le travail des enfants, assiste-t-on à une disparition du modèle de l’enfant du lignage qui percevait l’enfant comme une « richesse » et une force de travail complémentaire? Le chapitre présente d’abord la construction progressive du travail des enfants en « problème » de politiques publiques pendant la colonisation. Il analyse ensuite l’évolution et la portée de l’intervention des gouvernements successifs après l’indépendance pour imposer une nouvelle vision de l’enfant (l’enfant de la Nation). Enfin, il révèle que malgré l’engouement récent pour la prise en compte du point de vue l’enfant, le statut de l’enfant travailleur comme sujet peine à être reconnu. L’analyse globale montre une tension permanente, à des degrés différents, entre les modèles de l’enfant de la nation, de l’enfant du lignage et de l’enfant sujet : ce qui traduit aussi la complexité du travail des enfants et de sa lutte au Burkina Faso contemporain. Non-linearity is a frequent occurrence in engineering structures including spacecraft structures. It can take different forms, and it is at the origin of various dynamical phenomena with no linear counterpart. These phenomena include jumps, harmonics, bifurcation and non-unicity of the solutions. Even when they are local, non-linearities can affect the global dynamical behaviour of a structure and have a substantial impact on spacecraft loads. What makes non-linear dynamics challenging to analyse and model is the well-known result that the principle of linear superposition does not (generally) apply to non-linear systems. Even if linearisation may suffice in some cases, the rigorous analysis of non-linear structures requires adequate and dedicated numerical and experimental methodologies. The main objective of this chapter is to describe how to handle non-linearities for an accurate estimation of loads in spacecraft structures. Specifically, guidelines for both modeling and testing are provided. [less ▲]

Este capítulo analiza el surgimiento del voto en el exterior tanto en el contexto político boliviano entre los años 2003 y 2009 como en el marco global del reciente desarrollo de políticas públicas de los estados de origen destinadas a los ciudadanos residentes en el exterior. Para comprender el interés actual en la extensión del sufragio a ciudadanos residentes en el exterior, se exploran tres elementos: 1) la formación de comunidades migrantes organizadas en el exterior que reivindican derechos en sus países de origen; 2) la importancia estratégica de los emigrantes para los gobiernos expulsores en un mundo globalizado; y, 3) las transformaciones de la escena política doméstica. En concreto, se examina la relación que se ha creado entre el Gobierno nacional y los emigrantes a partir de la llegada del Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) a la Presidencia en el año 2006 y el proceso político por el cual llega a hacer- se efectivo el llamado “voto en el exterior”. Cette recherche analyse la validité de constuit de plusieurs épreuves physiques censées mesurer un facteur unique d'aptitude physique générale des étudiants se destinant à une formation supérieure en éducation physique et sport. L'échantillon est composé de 1481 candidats masculins âgés en moyenne de 20 ans dans deux formations supérieures au Maroc et en Algérie. Les analyses factorielles en composantes principales avec rotation varimax des performances aux épreuves physiques révèlent plutôt une solution en deux composantes qui se distinguent selon la durée du travail pour produire de l'énergie: la puissance musculaire glycolytique et la puissance musculaire phosphagénique. La première composante correspond à la capacité de produire du lactate en plus de 12 secondes; elle est définie par la course de vitesse et la course de résistance. La deuxième composante correspond à la capacité de produire en moins de 7 secondes du phosphate déjà présent dans les muscles; elle est définie par les autres épreuves physiques. [less ▲]

PET-CT combines in a single imaging session both anatomical and metabolic information. Depending on the strategy, the CT part of the study may yield only crude anatomical information and attenuation correction for the PET part, or it may offer full radiological diagnostic features. Regarding the radiotracers for gastrointectinal oncology, FDG remains the mainstay but alternative compounds aimed at more specific biological targets are actively tested. In particular Ga-68-labelled DOTA derivatives image somatostatine receptors with exquisite sensitivity and specificity. In clinical practice, several indications are well recognized for FDG PET-CT. These include the initial staging of esophageal, pancreatic and rectal cancers with a clinical impact in a significal proportion of patients. The metabolic activity, as recorded prior to any treatment, holds prognostic information in esophageal and rectal cancers, as well as GISTs. Methodological issues remain to be solved, but the potential is clearly present so that an increased clinical role is highly likely in the near future. FDG PET-CT is a major clinical tool in the detection and staging of recurrent colorectal cancer, and for determining the resectability of liver metastases. Ongoing developments include technological advances, in particular the combined PET-MR devices, and alternative tracers, such as those imaging angiogenesis. [less ▲]

Thiamin (vitamin B1) was the first vitamin characterized and its discovery was at the origin of the concept of vitamin. Thiamin deficiency mainly affects the nervous system and causes two classical diseases, beriberi (a polyneuritic syndrome) and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (anterograde amnesia resulting from brain lesions in alcoholics). Thiamin transport through the membranes of intestinal and other cells requires specific carriers. As the process is rather slow, various lipid-soluble thiamin precursors with better bioavailability have been developed. In the cytosol, thiamin is pyrophosphorylated to thiamin diphosphate (ThDP), an indispenable cofactor in cell energy metabolism. Therefore, thiamin deficiency causes decreased cofactor function, leading to neuronal death. In addition, non-cofactor roles of the triphosphorylated derivatives thiamin triphosphate (ThTP) and adenosine thiamin triphosphate (AThTP) may play a role in metabolic regulation and may contribute to the pathology of thiamin deficiency-induced brain lesions. Current research interests are focused on the metabolism and role of thiamin derivatives (especially in catalysis by ThDP-dependent enzymes) and the biochemical and pathophysiological mechanisms by which thiamin deficiency induces specific brain lesions and may be implicated in other disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. Two of the most fundamental questions in the field of neurosciences are how information is represented in different brain structures, and how this information evolves over time. Various tools, such as Magnetic Resonance (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) have been developed over the last few decades to record brain activity and investigate these questions. In particular, functional MRI (fMRI) tracks changes of the Blood Oxygenation Level-Dependent (BOLD) signal, which is a good indicator of brain activity, with a spatial resolution of a few cubic millimeters and a typical temporal resolution in the order of 1 or 2 seconds. Until recently, the methods used to analyze such data focused on characterizing the individual relationship between a cognitive or perceptual state and each image voxel, i.e. following a massively univariate approach. A well-known univariate technique is Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) . SPM relies on the General Linear Model to detect which voxels show a statistically significant response to the (combination of) experimental conditions of interest. However, there are limitations on what can be learned about the representation of information by examining voxels in a univariate fashion. For instance, spatially distributed sets of voxels considered as non-significant by a SPM analysis of one experimental condition might still carry information about the presence or absence of that condition. Furthermore, classic voxel-based analytic techniques are agnostic of any a priori information, for example disease-specific information. They are also mainly designed to perform group-wise comparisons and would therefore be unsuitable to evaluate the state of the disease of each individual. On the other hand, Multi-Voxel Pattern Analyses (MVPA) allow an increased sensitivity to detect the presence of a particular mental representation. These multivariate methods, also known as brain decoding or mind reading, attempt to link a particular cognitive, behavioral or perceptual state to specific patterns of voxels’ activity. Application of these methods made it possible to decode the category of a seen object or the orientation of a stripped pattern seen by the subject from the brain activation of the imaged subject. Advances in pattern-classification algorithms also allowed the decoding of less-controlled conditions such as memory retrieval tasks. Advanced mathematical tools are still under development to allow the classification of more complicated experimental data sets, such as examining the content of mind wandering or detecting the state of consciousness of a patient showing no response to a command. Satellite footprints are localized auroral emissions in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter (Saturn) near the magnetic field lines linking to satellites, Io, Europa, and Ganymede (Enceladus). They are the auroral signatures of the strong electromagnetic interactions taking place between these moons and the intensely magnetized, rapidly rotating planets they orbit. The Io and Europa spots have been shown to be followed by an extended tail. This might also be the case for the Ganymede and Enceladus emissions, although not yet unambiguously observed. Moreover, the main Io spot is accompanied by secondary spots attributed either to reflections of the plasma waves generated at Io on the Io plasma torus boundary or to electrons accelerated in one hemisphere but precipitating in the opposite one. While the horizontal extent of the spots gives a hint of the size of the interaction region in the equatorial plane, the vertical profile of the footprints provides clues to the energy distribution of the precipitating electrons. Moreover, the location of the footprints can be used as constraints for magnetic field models. Finally, the brightness of the footprints is a valuable diagnostic of the interaction mechanism and has been observed to vary at different time scales, each one tentatively associated with a different process. Durante los últimos años, los representantes políticos de varios países de mayor procedencia de la inmigración en España han multiplicado sus iniciativas hacia los emigrantes, con especial interés en captar su voto. Utilizando las encuestas recogidas en Madrid el día 6 de diciembre de 2009 (elecciones presidenciales en Bolivia) y entrevistas exploratorias con migrantes bolivianos, este capítulo examina la especificidad del caso español en el marco de las migraciones bolivianas. La exposición de los resultados empíricos sobre el caso de Madrid se articula en tres partes: la primera versa sobre la inmigración boliviana en España; la segunda ana- liza las prácticas de transnacionalismo político en relación con la jornada electoral y, finalmente, la tercera centra la atención en algunos aspectos puntuales de la campaña electoral, tales como la circulación de la infor- mación y el papel de las asociaciones. The non-energetic valorisation of renewable resources using efficient and eco-friendly methodologies is the central axis of the "green chemistry" concept. In particular, the chemical and chemo-enzymatical transformations of carbohydrates arising from the hydrolysis of non-edible vegetal feedstock (i.e., lignocellulosic biomass) are a widely explored thematic for the production of new high-added value materials, synthons, and platform chemicals. Since the seminal works of Gedye and Giguere in 1986, the use of microwaves as a non-conventional heating source has gained large attention in organic chemistry. Due to commonly observed acceleration in reactions rates and improved selectvities and yields, microwave heating has progressively emerged as a green chemistry technology. Minimizing both energy consumption (via the reduction of temperature and reaction times) and wastes (by improvement of selectivity), microwaves has enjoyed significant adoption by the research community. This chapter describes the use of microwave processes to mediate key reactions in the field of carbohydrates chemistry. Some examples of typical carbohydrates reactions (glycosylations, hydroxyl groups’ protection, etc.) under microwave conditions are displayed and highlight the benefits of this microwave approach in terms of yields, atom efficiency, environmental factor, and carbon efficiency. The essential features of composite steel concrete beams and slabs are first given for a load bearing mode in one-way bending. The essential features of the two ways acting tensile membrane action load bearing mode are then explained. Experimental tests that helped understanding and quantifying the tensile membrane action, either small scale or large scale, at room temperature or in fire condition, are summarized. Simple calculation models that have been developed for calculating the load bearing capacity of composite floor under fire are presented. Considerations are given about the requirements for numerical models aiming at simulating the behavior of composite floor systems in the fire situation are given. Finally, an application example is presented of a composite floor system designed by the author in 2007. [less ▲]

Le partenariat entre l’Union européenne (UE) et la République populaire de Chine apparaît aujourd’hui de plus en plus comme une nécessité pour ces deux acteurs en quête d’influence croissante sur la scène internationale. Au-delà du partage d’intérêts économiques et commerciaux fondant cette coopération, un objectif commun d’ordre mondial entre en jeu : la reconnaissance de leur statut et positionnement international, et ce, à des fins de rééquilibrage de la puissance dans un monde multipolaire en gestation. Si la politique de rapprochement entre l’UE et la Chine est génératrice de bénéfices mutuels, ce volontarisme se heurte toutefois à des réalités politiques et à des défis stratégiques. Au niveau bilatéral, les relations sino-européennes souffrent d’un manque de réciprocité et s’égrènent sous l’effet combiné de problèmes politiques et de politique interne propres à la nature de ces deux acteurs. Au niveau mondial, leur développement se voit également contrarié par la centralité qu’occupent les États-Unis dans les relations plus largement transpacifiques et transatlantiques. Ce strabisme aigu en direction de l’acteur américain induit de facto une relation triangulaire, et par de-là asymétrique , au sein de laquelle la "Chinamérique" fait figure de moyeu. Dans ce contexte, la relation UE-Chine apparaît-elle complètement hors-jeu? [less ▲]
