Over the last decade, China has deeply affected the economic map of Latin America. All the Latin American countries quickly increased their exchanges with China and get engaged in new plans for exchanges, cooperation and partnerships. These evolutions have highlighted the American lack of leadership and the European loss of competitiveness. Numbers of researches tend to analyse the Sino-Latin American relationship with the eyes of reciprocity. This contribution rather makes the choice of analysing China’s strategy for growth on the world stage, focusing on its ties with Latin America and Brazil especially: cooperation or hegemony? According to this approach, the increase of China’s influence doesn’t only depend on its resources, nor on its capacity to mobilize them opportunely. It also depends on its external recognition. Thus, the power of China can be measured through its capacity to “assert itself as a reference” for its emerging peers, or even for Western powers. By integrating all dimensions of the Chinese power through its foreign policy and its incantatory diplomacy (anti-hegemonism, world multipolarization, South-South cooperation, etc.) , this chapter will try to identify real Chinese influence by measuring the distance between perception and reality. Against the backdrop of the following hypothesis: does the Chinese penetration in Latin America have a notable impact on the relations of Europe and the United States with this part of the world? DNA oligomers are promising building blocks for the development of bottom-up nano-devices and molecular logic machines. To control and exploit their unique capabilities of self-assembling and molecular recognition a deep understanding of their dynamical properties is essential. We theoretically investigate the dynamics of a DNA dodecamer and its complexes with two common ligands, Hoechst33258 and the ethidium cation, by means of classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We study the structural relation between the flexibility of the double helix and the binding process. The dynamics of a terminal base pair unbinding is also analysed as an example of process that involves multiple energy minima in the underlying free energy landscape. [less ▲]

In this article Jérôme Jamin examines the ideological development of the British National Party (BNP) and the Front National (FN) since 9/11. He argues that if both parties have evolved towards discourses more in line with democracy and liberal values, it can be explained by the opportunity the “threat” of Islam offered. After a reminder of the birth and the electoral evolution of the two parties, Jamin focuses on the perception and the definition of democracy as depicted in their manifestos and main public speeches. The study reveals an ethnic-styled perception of democracy at the BNP in opposition with a more civic perception at the FN, even if the analysis shows an ambiguity behind the use of the concept of “people” in the FN rhetoric mixing frequently “demos” and “ethnos”. The author confronts the combination of this new democratic rhetoric with the birth of Islam as a threat incompatible with “British democracy” in the United Kingdom and “Republican secularism” in France. In both parties, stereotypes of Islam are used to portray the BNP and the FN as defenders of a true and legitimate democracy and to a great extent, Jamin argues, “Islam” provided an unexpected opportunity to replace migrants, foreigners and Arabs with a new stereotype: the Muslim who threatens the separation between state and religion, equality between men and women, freedom of speech, and so on. Jamin concludes by emphasising that both parties required time to identify this new scapegoat. [less ▲]

This chapter will analyze the place of the threat alleged of Cultural Marxism in the discourse of the radical and extreme right, in the United States as well as in continental Europe and the United Kingdom. The underlying aim of this chapter is to examine the determinant role that this ‘threat’ plays in the Anglo Saxon extreme right, in particular at the intellectual, ideological and doctrinal levels, in comparison to other countries. Certainly if the Netherlands, France or other countries have parties or political groups which borrow the rhetoric of ‘fighting’ against Cultural Marxism, or its more nebulous variant, ‘political correctness’, it certainly finds its origins in the United States, and more broadly the Anglo-Saxon world. To achieve this, the chapter will begin by unpicking the meanings behind the notion of Cultural Marxism, from its origins to its use in Anders Breivik’s manifesto released shortly before the Oslo and UtØya massacres. It will show that the term emerged from the literature of American ultraconservatives following the fall of the Berlin Wall as a consequence of the disappearance of the ‘red menace’ of Communism. Secondly, it will focus on two important moments in the development of the term. It will describe the phrase’s usage from the beginning of the 2000s within the discourse of Pat Buchanan, a political commentator and multiple U.S. presidential candidate. Then it will illustrate the re-emergence of the term some 10 years later, in the manifesto of Anders Breivik and in the subsequent justification of his acts throughout his trial. In both cases, we will see that Buchanan and Breivik emphasize the same basic theme, Cultural Marxism, in their denouncement of what they see as two different threats. Finally, from these explorations of the usage of the term, the discussion will examine other current uses of the notion of ‘Cultural Marxism’ in the British and American radical right. To conclude, it will show how the ‘Cultural Marxism’ threats are used by a variety of activists to argue for the defence of their political standpoints, setting this in a language of preserving freedom and democracy, but ultimately only within a framework designed to defend Judeo-Christian values. With a few exceptions, the emerging field of production studies has dealt mainly with the analysis of Western film industries. This chapter addresses this gap by looking at the growing African digital film production industries in Southern Nigeria and Ethiopia, and by pointing out the specificities of the production cultures that have emerged within this context. By applying an ethnographic approach to the study of film production, this chapter highlights the ambiguous position that digital film production occupies in these two countries between, on the one hand, the creation of new avenues of economic and social mobility, and on the other the emergence of strategies of exclusion and control. The roles of mast cells in health and disease remain incompletely understood. While the evidence that mast cells are critical effector cells in IgE-dependent anaphylaxis and other acute IgE-mediated allergic reactions seems unassailable, studies employing various mice deficient in mast cells or mast cell-associated proteases have yielded divergent conclusions about the roles of mast cells or their proteases in certain other immunological responses. Such “controversial” results call into question the relative utility of various older versus newer approaches to ascertain the roles of mast cells and mast cell proteases in vivo. This review discusses how both older and more recent mouse models have been used to investigate the functions of mast cells and their proteases in health and disease. We particularly focus on settings in which divergent conclusions about the importance of mast cells and their proteases have been supported by studies that employed different models of mast cell or mast cell protease deficiency. We think that two major conclusions can be drawn from such findings: (1) no matter which models of mast cell or mast cell protease deficiency one employs, the conclusions drawn from the experiments always should take into account the potential limitations of the models (particularly abnormalities affecting cell types other than mast cells) and (2) even when analyzing a biological response using a single model of mast cell or mast cell protease deficiency, details of experimental design are critical in efforts to define those conditions under which important contributions of mast cells or their proteases can be identified. This paper looks at migration and the politics of representation in contemporary Italian cinema by comparing one of the Nigerian videos recently produced in Italy, Akpegi Boys (2009), directed by Vincent Omoigui and Simone Sandretti, with two recent Italian films which portray the experience of Nigerian migrants in Italy, Marco and Antonio Manetti’s Torino Boys (1997), and Enrico Verra’s Sotto il Sole Nero (2004). Interestingly enough both films take, implicitly and explicitly, Nigerian videos as a narrative and aesthetic reference in order to build an innovative representation of Nigerian migrants in Italy, thus positioning themselves in an original position vis-à-vis the growing corpus of Italian films about migration emerged over the past two decades. As this paper argues, these three films allow us to identify the emergence of what could be defined as an “anti-humanitarian” representation of migration. By defining their attitude as anti-humanitarian, I do not intend to mean that these films assume a negative or derogatory perspective on migration. On the contrary, what I intend to highlight is that these are films that, by using a number of specific narrative and aesthetic strategies such as, among others, the reference to Nollywood commercial and exploitation filmmaking style, make an attempt to go beyond the binary representation that much debate on migration in Italy implicitly embraces, a representation according to which the migrant is either seen as an invader or as a victim. By playing with cultural references that belong to the contemporary cultural universe of Nigerian migrants themselves, these films suggest the possibility of building a bridge between the diverging ways in which Italians and (in this case Nigerian) migrants look at migration. This encounter has the potential of helping Italian directors and intellectuals in deconstructing their hegemonic gaze on migrants and migration phenomena, and has the possibility to inaugurate an healthy as much as needed process of decentralization and provincialization of singularly “Italian” perspectives on migration in Italy. Let k >= 2 be an integer. A set X of integers is k-recognizable if the language of k-ary representations of the elements in X is accepted by a finite automaton. The celebrated theorem of Cobham from 1969 states that if a set of integers is both k-recognizable and ℓ-recognizable, then it is a finite union of arithmetic progressions. We present several extensions of this result to nonstandard numeration systems, we describe the relationships with substitutive and automatic words and list Cobham-type results in various contexts. Although farm tourism is an appealing idea combining agriculture and tourism, the chance to succeed in both activities is low. The Farm tourism experiments are supplied, imagined and experimented in different ways. Consequently definitions, practices and perceptions of agritourism or farm tourism differ as well. Using Gunn’s image typology the paper analyses induced, organic and modified by experience images of argitourism. The study combines data issued from a survey amongst tourists (n = 230), 26 tourism farm holders’ life stories and 31 interviews with experts conducted both in Wallonia and Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It scrutinizes the promotional discourses, the life experience and the strategy of farm tourism holders, the expectations of tourists who have experimented farm tourism or not, who claim living in the countryside or not. The level of expectations regarding reception, authenticity, convenience, and active participation in farm works differ noticeably and are now and then inconsistent with the supply and the farm activity. The video industry in Nigeria has developed within a widely informal economic environment in which the illicit reproduction and circulation of goods were the rule rather than the exception. The informality of circulation has played a particularly influential role in both the history of the video industry and the genesis of the present crisis. While, on the one hand, it has made videos available all over the African continent and within the diaspora, creating the basis for Nollywood’s international success, it has, on the other hand, weakened the industry’s economy, exposing it to consecutive cycles of saturation and collapse. For this reason, the production crisis that emerged over the past few years has catalyzed numerous controversies concerning the structure of the video economy and the rules that regulate it. The informality on which the video economy has been based since its inception is today often considered a threat to the survival of the industry itself. While the industry has achieved global recognition, the economic fragility of its success has provoked growing anxiety. This anxiety has been progressively concentrated, by both media and video entrepreneurs, on issues of piracy and copyright protection. The aim of this chapter is to investigate the causes of this anxiety and the role that piracy and transformations in copyright legislation have had in catalysing it, while shaping the economy of the industry. Throughout this chapter I will argue that when the uncontrolled circulation of goods begins to undermine the economic basis of the industry that produces them, the rhetoric of piracy is mobilized to ensure the accessibility to the economy of both the production and the distribution of the goods themselves. This allows some of the entrepreneurs involved in the production process to gain exclusive control over it and the capital it generates. Within the Nigerian context, the rhetorical construction of piracy and the legal and economic consequences of this construction are the result of specific conflicts among different segments of the Nigerian video industry and, more precisely, different models of economic entrepreneurship. As the history of the Nigerian video phenomenon shows, a loose copyright regime seems to have positive consequences for the emergence and early development of a creative industry, although, once the industry seeks to attain higher levels of profitability, it tends to become problematic, and the rhetoric of piracy can become a tool to orient processes of restructuration of the cultural industry’s economy. In relation to this dynamic, I analyse the way in which the normative orders that regulate the reproduction and circulation of images and contents developed within the Nigerian context, and I discuss how their introduction and implementation progressively shaped people’s perception of legal and illegal practices in the field of local cultural production. [less ▲]
