This paper looks at migration and the politics of representation in contemporary Italian cinema by comparing one of the Nigerian videos recently produced in Italy, Akpegi Boys (2009), directed by Vincent Omoigui and Simone Sandretti, with two recent Italian films which portray the experience of Nigerian migrants in Italy, Marco and Antonio Manetti’s Torino Boys (1997), and Enrico Verra’s Sotto il Sole Nero (2004). Interestingly enough both films take, implicitly and explicitly, Nigerian videos as a narrative and aesthetic reference in order to build an innovative representation of Nigerian migrants in Italy, thus positioning themselves in an original position vis-à-vis the growing corpus of Italian films about migration emerged over the past two decades. As this paper argues, these three films allow us to identify the emergence of what could be defined as an “anti-humanitarian” representation of migration. By defining their attitude as anti-humanitarian, I do not intend to mean that these films assume a negative or derogatory perspective on migration. On the contrary, what I intend to highlight is that these are films that, by using a number of specific narrative and aesthetic strategies such as, among others, the reference to Nollywood commercial and exploitation filmmaking style, make an attempt to go beyond the binary representation that much debate on migration in Italy implicitly embraces, a representation according to which the migrant is either seen as an invader or as a victim. By playing with cultural references that belong to the contemporary cultural universe of Nigerian migrants themselves, these films suggest the possibility of building a bridge between the diverging ways in which Italians and (in this case Nigerian) migrants look at migration. This encounter has the potential of helping Italian directors and intellectuals in deconstructing their hegemonic gaze on migrants and migration phenomena, and has the possibility to inaugurate an healthy as much as needed process of decentralization and provincialization of singularly “Italian” perspectives on migration in Italy. Flooding on Cambodian land use systems is not a new phenomenon but its significance has increased in the context of global environmental changes. This study aims to assess the vulnerability of agricultural production to floods in the Sangkae River watershed in Battambang province, Northwestern Cambodia. The study was conducted in conjunction with the provincial spatial planning team hosted by the Provincial Department of Land Management and can be viewed as a first step toward a flood management decision-making tool for provincial authorities. The assessments rest on specific dimensions of vulnerability (exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity) at different levels in a multi-scale framework: spatial scale (watershed, commune and household); temporal scale (decade, year and season); and institutional scale (national policy, provincial operating rules and communal agencies). The analysis rests on triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data (time-series rainfall data, land use systems, participatory flood mapping, commune workshops (n=31), social-economic statistical databases, in-depth interviews with relevant institutions (n=5) and household surveys (n=162). Intensification of rainfall since the 1920s has increased the risk of flooding in the Sangkae River watershed during the late rainy season, particularly in the upstream area. Using an indicator-based approach, we discovered that the vulnerability of communes is highly dependent on the agro-ecology of land use systems. The household assessment reveals the variability of adaptive capacity between households according to their food security status and income portfolio. Agricultural innovation and structural adaptation to flood are scarce; the households mostly cope with flood through credit, external aid and de-capitalization (sale of household assets). These coping mechanisms adopted by farmers do not reduce vulnerability but reinforce it.The application of this assessment methodology provides nested pictures of vulnerability at different levels and scales and we argue that a dialogue between these levels and scales is necessary to understand the nature of the vulnerability and to act to reduce it. Using these different typologies of vulnerability, this approach enables recommendations to be formulated to reduce vulnerability through better horizontal and vertical integration of institutions and agencies, and effective collective action. [less ▲]

Trying to describe polytheism is a difficult enterprise because the whole system can be seen as a complex structure, each element of which (a deity with its proper name) is both itself a complex set of prerogatives, and at the same time, must be considered in concert with the other elements. After a brief historiographical overview, this paper focuses on the first aspect by using the notion of ‘network’ as a metaphor to refer to the complexity of the ancient Greek gods. It provides two case studies, of the Moirai and the goddess Hera. The paper concludes that polytheism can be described if one conceptualises the complexity of the gods—their unity and diversity—together at every level (Panhellenic and local, cult and myths, and so on). We analyze the situation of six multinational companies’ policy of "social responsibility" and of "sustainable development". The purpose of this communication is to define how these companies, especially the subsidiaries, are socially responsible and take into account environmental issues. This exploratory and qualitative study is based on the analysis of official discourse of six firms and those of human resources managers. We highlight different types of "social responsibility", the "stakeholders" that are taken into account by companies and the means implemented to achieve the policies of "sustainable development" and of "social responsibility". Our purpose is to show, beyond the official discourse, which role the subsidiaries play and which autonomy they have in their policies’ implementation. We wonder in conclusion about the hypothesis that a new way of human resource management of organizations is likely to appear through this new “social responsibility” and, conversely, if the new management involves the emergence of a new social responsibility. We will show that the types of responsibility, shown through the web site and in the HR discourses, are “ethic” (stands for the respect of the values, the standards and the requirements that stakeholders find fair) and “economic” ( focuses on the production of goods and services). Those classifications depend on the firm’s sector. The Human Resources can be more regardful for the legal aspects or for the political aspects, especially in crisis situation. The human resources play different roles and highlight different priorities: respect of fundamental values, actions of the subsidiary that are presented as models, transparent communication, gather the employees around values and projects… [less ▲]

Political parties are key political actors in both Quebec and Wallonia. As their foremost ambition is to govern their region, these parties clearly contribute to shaping its identity and image. This chapter aims at exploring how political parties in Quebec and in Wallonia speak about their region by focusing on an analysis of their electoral manifestos for the period 1994–2014. Using a quantitative and qualitative approach combining insights from lexicometry, cognitive linguistics and political science, the aims of this contribution are (i) to unravel how the parties perceive their region and its future development, (ii) to identify relevant evolutions in their perception of their respective region, and (iii) to assess to what extent parallels can be drawn between the two regions. The identification of causal or predictive variants/genes/mechanisms for disease-associated traits is characterized by “complex” networks of molecular phenotypes. Present technology and computer power allow building and processing large collections of these data types. However, the super-rapid data generation is counterweighted by a slow-pace for data integration methods development. Most currently available integrative analytic tools pertain to pairing omics data and focus on between-data source relationships, making strong assumptions about within-data source architectures. A limited number of initiatives exist aiming to find the most optimal ways to analyze multiple, possibly related, omics databases, and fully acknowledge the specific characteristics of each data type. A thorough understanding of the underlying assumptions of integrative methods is needed to draw sound conclusions afterwards. In this chapter, the authors discuss how the field of “integromics” has evolved and give pointers towards essential research developments in this context. [less ▲]

The Council of Europe and the European Union are major players and partners in the domain of policy-shaping strategies on the European continent, with significant and ever-growing impact on international community as a whole. Although the ratio and ideas behind their establishment were not the same (economic versus humanistic), they have, over the time, acquired a similar attitude towards a number of legal issues, including protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Unlike the Council of Europe, which perceived human rights as a cornerstone of its founding pillars, the EU took a longer way to incorporate them in its priority areas. The latter shift was, however, rapid, and these days one is witnessing a large-scale cooperation instituted between respective regional organisations with the aim of creating a human-rights-friendly environment. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on one particular segment of their cooperation in the field of human rights protection—asylum law. For the fact that Europe attracts a large contingency of people looking for better life and new beginnings, asylum matters have moved swiftly to the forefront of the Council of Europe and EU standard-setting policies. Nevertheless, the existence of two parallel legal regimes has not led to an inconsistent asylum policy. In order to illustrate the Council of Europe and EU distinctive approaches to asylum, as well as their manifold interplay in the respective arena, the paper summarises the most notable pieces of their legal and regulatory framework and offers an insight into some of the leading asylum cases brought before the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union. Achieving scientific literacy is recognized as an essential goal of secondary school education. This obviously implies that science teachers, themselves, need to be scientifically literate, which in turn requires that emphasis should be placed on Nature of Science (NoS) issues in university pre-service (and also in-service) teacher education courses. A review of the research literature reveals that the beliefs and the understanding of teachers about NoS are often simplistic and lacking internal consistency. Research has also shown that explicit approaches towards NoS teaching are more efficient than implicit ones, and that analysis of historic cases can be an effective teaching tool. Based on an analysis of the existing literature and on their teaching experience, the authors propose a NoS curriculum for pre-service science teachers in chemistry, biology and physics and critically discuss a case example of NoS teaching practice consisting of four weekly seminars of two hours each. These seminars focus on identifying the learners’ preconceptions through team work, on discussing explicitly key NoS concepts and epistemological theories based on an inductive approach, and on highlighting the pedagogical implications. Suggestions for teaching the history of science (with emphasis on chemistry) are also provided. [less ▲]

This article is concerned with the lack of effectiveness of contemporary critical theories in explaining the conditions for social change. These theories, I would argue, continue to rely on a narrow construction of social actors. Indeed from Lukács to Bourdieu or even Habermas, many significant intellectual developments have taken place which continue to be based on one key assumption: that individuals (workers, social actors, etc.) unconsciously reproduce the social structures of capitalism whilst being alienated by them. They accept the conditions enforced on them and no longer seek to rebel against a system which impoverishes not only their work and culture, but also their soul and their creativity. What is more: they ensure the reproduction of the system by seeking to engage in mass consumption at any cost, or by glorifying the dominant values. In this paper I would like to show that today, no new critical perspective has emerged out of this negative representation of the world. Indeed, critical works present ‘man’ living here and now as nothing more than a deeply bastardized being, corrupted, denatured, soiled by a civilizing process. What we have is in effect a social actor who, in Rousseau’s philosophical tradition, has been perverted by a civilizing process informed by modernity or capitalism. This view of social actors rests on a form of disgust towards the world. [less ▲]

This chapter suggests that the notion of ‘social enterprise’ is useful to capture the DNA of organizations focused on fair trade and to locate them within a broader organizational taxonomy. Without seeking to impose a new term that may not resonate for certain actors or regions, this chapter aims to bring two contributions to fair trade research and practice. First, it is suggested that the social enterprise approach is particularly useful as an analytical tool enabling researchers and other stakeholders to capture the evolution and diversification of organizational models in fair trade. Second, the use of a broader organizational approach that is not specific to the sole fair trade sector allows for connections with similar organizations in other sectors and brings a shift from considering mainly what the organizations do (fair trade in this case) towards also addressing what they are (innovative social enterprise models combining market dynamics with social purpose). This chapter is structured as follows. First, the concept of social enterprise is introduced and discussed. Then, the evolution of the organizational landscape of fair trade (in the North) is summarized. Finally, fair trade organizations are examined in the light of the social enterprise concept, with illustrations from a study in four European countries (Huybrechts 2010a; 2012). [less ▲]

Falsifying drugs constitutes a scourge, a danger and a threat to public health. If the situation is already alarming at the global level, what could be expected regarding the peri-urban areas of developing countries? In order to better understand the situation in these areas and to improve the consciousness and involvement of the people living in those areas, a study was carried out to evaluate the current status of the pharmaceutical health situation of some cities in Central East and West Africa. The results illustrate the complexity to set up an adequate pharmaceutical system in these areas that seem to escape to the control of the official health authorities. On the other hand, the analytical results carried out by means of generic analytical methods on antibiotic, antimalarial and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs sampled in the peri-urban areas, are revelatory and confirm the sad reality of false drugs in those areas. The alternative or noncanonical NF-kappaB pathway regulates the generation of p52-containing NF-kappaB dimers (e.g., p52/RelB) through a partial degradation (called processing) of the precursor p100 into p52. This pathway is activated by a subset of non-death TNF receptor members, which ultimately activate two kinases: NIK (NF-kappaB-Inducing Kinase) and IKKalpha (Inhibitor of kappaB Kinase alpha). These kinases create a phosphodegron for the E3 ligase SCF-beta-TrCP that covalently binds K48-linked polyubiquitin chain onto p100 prior to its proteasomal processing. The resulting p52-containing complexes translocate into the nucleus to activate target genes involved in secondary lymphoid organ development, B cell survival or in osteoclastogenesis. We describe in this chapter straightforward methods to monitor the activation of the alternative NF-kappaB pathway. These methods uncover cytosolic and nuclear biochemical modifications of key proteins of the alternative NF-kappaB pathway required prior to the transcription of NF-kappaB target genes. [less ▲]

This study assesses Turkey's role and contribution to the Southern Gas Corridor. Firstly, it analysis the concept of energy security, a is a complex, multi-dimensional concept, which largely depends on the context in which it is elaborated and the type of the stakeholder to which it addresses (international organization, producer-, transit-, and consumer-country), the aims and policies pursued by the stakeholders, and, in subsidiary, the nature of the markets (oil markets or gas markets. Secondly, it analysis the EU's approach upon energy security, which relates to the diversification of energy sources, supply and routes, elements which shape up EU’s initiatives in the external energy policy field.Thirdly, it examines how the Southern Gas Corridor could enhance the EU’s energy security -it could mainly contribute to supply security and supply diversification of the Southern, Central and Eastern European gas markets. Finally, the study analysis the role of Turkey into the Southern Gas Corridor implementation and development. [less ▲]

L’alcool remonte le moral. Une petite cuite n’a jamais tué personne. [less ▲]

The majority of children in Burkina Faso undertake work and, compared to other West African countries, it has the highest rate of children involved in hazardous work (Diallo 2008; NISD 2008), which is one working child out of two. Based on a qualitative survey, this chapter presents the perspectives of Burkinabe children working in two of the hazardous sectors: a quarry and an artisanal mine. The findings show that children acknowledge very difficult working conditions in these sites. However a variety of reasons maintain them in work, which they perceive as a solution and thus challenging action against child labour in Burkina Faso. [less ▲]
