Endemic silk moths (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) in Madagascar have been collected and exploited for centuries by local populations either for food or as a source of silk cocoons from which textiles are made. Moth natural forest habitat has also been degraded, leading to a drastic decrease in silk moth populations. However, very few scientific reports highlighted these observations well known by the local people. We have inventoried silk moths species in tapia (Uapaca bojeri Baill.) forests located in the central Highlands of Madagascar. Inventories have been conducted during one year from August 2009 to July 2010 by sampling transects in Imamo forests. Three species of Lasiocampidae belonging to two genera were found: Borocera cajani Vinson, Borocera marginepunctata Guérin-Méneville and Europtera punctillata Guenée. These three silk moth species are endemic to Madagascar but only one (B. cajani) is commercially exploited in the silk industry. The habitat, host plants, abundance, life cycle and feeding behaviour of these species in their natural habitat are described. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Borocera cajani Vinson (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) is a silk moth endemic to Madagascar that is currently used to produce silk textiles. This silk moth is polyphagous and colonizes forests situated in the central Highlands, mainly constituted by tapia trees (Uapaca bojeri). Two host plants are commonly used by the caterpillar of this moth species: tapia and voafotsy (Aphloia theiformis). In this work we have evaluated parameters of different stages (survival rate, development duration, weight and size, fecundity, etc.) of B. cajani on both host plants. We have observed a 30% higher survival rate on U. bojeri. Larval and pupae duration were shorter on U. bojeri (64,8 ± 1,5 days) than on A. theiformis (87,4 ± 2,0 days). Cocoons were bigger when obtained from larvae fed on U. bojeri. This plant is therefore better for the development of B. cajani and should be used in intensive rearing of this silk moth. [less ▲]

- Addresses key issues for the allocation of taxing powers in the European Union - Looks at fundamental questions of direct taxation - Covers a broad range of aspects such as limited tax liability, losses or transfer pricing The contributions to this volume try to overcome the traditional approach of the judicature of the European Court of Justice regarding the application of the fundamental freedoms in direct taxation that is largely built on a non-discrimination test. In this volume, outstanding authors cover various aspects of the national and international tax order when European law meets domestic taxation. This includes testing traditional pillars of income taxation – ability-to-pay, source and residence, abuse of law, arm’s length standard – with respect to their place in the emerging European tax order as well as substantial matters of co-existence between different tax systems that are not covered by the non-discrimination approach such as mutual recognition, cross-border loss compensation or avoidance of double taxation. The overarching goal is to flesh out the extent to which a substantive “allocation of taxing powers” within the European Union is on its way to a convincing overall framework and to stretch the discussion “beyond discrimination”. For a domain such as development cooperation, public support and awareness raising become particularly relevant in view of converting ideas and opinions current in society into political support, and eventually into a congruent policy. In this chapter, we first describe what is meant by the term political support. This is followed by an account of our research on the issue in the Belgian political world. A key question here is to which extent political parties are concerned about development cooperation. At the end of this chapter, we briefly sum up the policy implications of the way politics are capturing public support for foreign aid. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

In Burundi, family farming occupies more than 90% of the active population and plays a vital role in food production and participates in the formation of more than 50% of GDP. Before the civil war of 1993, Kirundo was deemed “breadbasket of the country” because it fed many parts of Burundi in particular food legumes and cereals, so that family farming was market-oriented. Today, this is the first province in Burundi that shows a high rate of malnutrition, poverty increased and a sharp decline in agricultural production up more than 56.6% from 1996 to 2009. The objective of this study is to understand the impact of land conflict on the socio-economic development of farmers in Kirundo Province. To conduct this study, an initial survey was carried out in 2010 among 355 randomly selected farmers in all communes of Kirundo. To understand the scope of land conflicts and its consequences on the socio-economic households, a second survey was conducted among 30 people who came to the High Court of Kirundo. The study was completed by collecting data on the courts of the residential suburbs of Bugabira, Busoni, Gitobe, Kirundo, Ntega and Vumbi communes, and also on the High Court of Kirundo province. Analysis of the results shows that land conflicts in the region have the following consequences: huge losses of agricultural production, substantial legal costs and the imprisonment and killing of people because of land conflicts. Confronted with the ongoing degradation of the tapia woodlands (Uapaca bojeri), reforestation by Pinus sp. and Eucalyptus sp.was considered as an alternative in Arivonimamo to substitute tapia for the production of firewood. However, the invasion by these alien species is actually considered as one of the threats to the tapia woodland in Madagascar. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the regeneration of the tapia woodlands in Arivonimamo. Consequently, “contact zones” between stands of exotic species, Pinus kesiya or Eucalyptus robusta, and U. bojeri were identified, in order to study tree regeneration along transects in each cardinal direction starting inside the exotic forests and continuing into the native populations. This study showed that the density of tapia regeneration varied between sites. It also appeared that the capacity of P. kesiya to invade the tapia woodland is much higher than for E. robusta. Moreover, the regeneration of pine inside the pine’s plantations was rather low. In addition, it was observed that the canopy opening rate had no significant influence on the development of the regeneration of the three species involved. Differences in canopy opening are due to various human activities such as the collection of non-timber forest products (tapia), the forestry operation of cleaning (pine) and early cutting (eucalyptus). The transition towards a more sustainable economic system is increasingly seen as an urgency to respond to the social, environmental and economic challenges of our times. Mirroring this increased attention, the scholarly literature on transition and transition management, “degrowth” and sustainable development (e.g., Loorbach, 2007, Boulanger, 2008) has considerably developed across a set of disciplines (sociology, geography, economics, engineering, etc.). The solutions put forth by the different literature streams vary to a large extent and rely on distinct if not opposed ideological foundations, from the radical, anti-consumerist vision of “degrowth” to the much softer and vaguer, reformist trend of “sustainable development”. Common to the different literature streams, however, is to mainly focus on two levels of analysis. First, the systemic level receives most attention when it comes to diagnoses of limitations in the extant system and exploration of what alternative – non-growth, post-transition or at least sustainable – systems or economies would look like. This focus on systems is logical given the scope of the expected (r)evolutions to undertake. It is also coherent with the main disciplines involved in this “macro-level” research effort: economics, sociology, political science, philosophy, etc. A second and subsequent level of analysis that has been considered lies at the other extreme of the continuum: the individual. Indeed, as the failures of the extant economic system have been linked to the unrealistic and ideologically oriented vision of the individual as an ever-calculating, utility-maximizing “homo oeconomicus” (Stiglitz, 2009), questions have arisen about the human behavior required to generate or at least participate in the alternative systems conceived at the macro level. Put another way, to what extent and in what sense do we need to change our individual behaviors, in terms of purchasing, working, voting, investing, moving, and acting in general, in order to liberate ourselves from the homo oeconomicus patterns and consider alternative behaviours that, put together, may contribute to alternative systems? This “micro-level” perspective has relied on work in psychology and anthropology in order to (re)discover new avenues for increased reflexivity and conscious action. Between the macro and micro perspectives lie a diversity of “meso” actors consisting of more or less formalized groups of individuals, organizations and institutions such as: public authorities (from local to global), businesses, civil society, educational institutions, etc. Much work has been undertaken on the role of these different types of “meso-actor” in the transition towards alternative economies, but in view of the author of this chapter this has been developed either in a superficial way, mentioning the different actors to engage in these processes, or using “black boxes” that suppose homogeneous sets of actors such as “companies” or “civil society actors”. In other words, although several case studies enter into the complexity of one or several of these black boxes, there is lack of clarity and depth in the study of how different types of actors, especially economic actors, may engage in and inspire societal change. In particular, little work makes the connection between how economic organizations function internally, and how they (may) act towards society (e.g., Moore et al., 2009). This chapter does not aim, of course, to fill this knowledge gap on its own. It intends to bring a modest contribution to understanding the role of meso actors and in particular economic organizations by focusing on one specific, under-researched but important actor that is social enterprise. As will be described further, social enterprises are still weakly defined and heterogeneous (Dart, 2004, Defourny and Nyssens, 2010, Huybrechts and Nicholls, 2012). Yet, they share two features that seem of particular interest in the debate mentioned here. First, they do not correspond to a neatly defined organizational category as they precisely lie at the intersection of two spheres that are commonly clearly separated and often opposed to each other: the market and the civil society. Such a “hybrid” nature offers the potential for a specific and original contribution to the debate on alternative economies and systems, insofar as hybridity is synonym for innovation and unconventional thinking, as this chapter aims to show. A second feature of social enterprises is their supposed coherence, at least theoretically, between internal functioning and external contribution. In other words, the new societal solutions that social enterprises offer through their products and services are supposed to be coherent with the solutions experimented within their very organizational structures. Despite their diversity and their obvious limitations, it is thus suggested here that examining social enterprises may offer at least two contributions to the discussion on alternative economies. First, by understanding the potential of hybridity, i.e. combination of distinct institutional patterns, to the reconfiguration of economic systems. Second, by highlighting the link between intra-organizational functioning and societal behavior, in order to show how engaging actors in building alternative economies must involve in one way or another these two dimensions. Many plant and animal species are endemic in Madagascar. Among them, the silk moth Borocera cajani, commonly named landibe, and which belongs to the Lasiocampidae family. It is a pholyphageous insect, with five larval stages followed by a complete metamorphosis in the pupal stage to turn into an adult; a nocturnal butterfly. Landibe’s principal habitat is composed of an endemic plant species in Madagascar: tapia (Uapaca bojeri, Euphorbiaceae). For a long time, this ecosystem was disturbed and seriously threatened. Today, in the area of Arivonimamo, procedures to ensure its protection exist and the “Associations Communautaires de Base” (COBA) are in charge of their respect. Activities related to silk industry can consist in important incomes for many families in the area of Antananarivo, increasing their standard of living. This research aims at increasing our general knowledge on Borocera cajani and more especially on its larvae cycle. We studied the influence of two feeding plants; tapia and voafotsy (Aphloia theaeformis), on several parameters of larvae development cycle, and we compared wild and laboratory breeding. Preference tests have also been carried out in the laboratory. Results showed that feeding plants have influence on some of the parameters of the landibe’s cycle development. Wild and laboratory breeding comparison revealed an influence on animals’ size. Preference tests showed that larvae, which grow up on voafotsy, developed a preference for this feeding plant. Current publications and scientific knowledge on Borocera cajani are still too small. This study brings complementary and essential information on landibe, which should receive legal protection status in order to avoid its disappearance. [less ▲]

This paper examines the legal regimes of international contracts concluded by States and public entities. These agreements come in many shape and form. Some of these contracts are long term arrangements involving massive amount of capital and touching upon key resources of the State. Other contracts are of more limited scope. The paper focuses on the law applicable to such agreements. The importance of determining the law applicable to 'state contracts' follows from the peculiar features of a contractual relation with a State, and most notably the additional risk this creates. As in the domestic context, the State is not a contractual partner like any other. It comes into the contractual relationship with its exorbitant powers and sometimes bad manners. This explains why, in contrast with private agreements, where such clauses are too often neglected, provisions on applicable law and settlement of disputes are often considered the “most sensitive legal issues” in the framework of contracts concluded by States. In this against this background that public international contracts will be examined. The attention will first focus on the determination of the law applicable to such contracts (section 1). Thereafter the focus will be on the various stabilization mechanisms used in practice (section 2). This will include both direct stabilization mechanisms and dispute resolution provisions, as these two elements are central to the legal regime of public international contracts. An attempt will be made to present both the generalprinciples and the current practice of States – even though it is difficult to draw general lessons as contracts concluded by states, which come in various formats and shapes, are not easily accessible. Tapia woods (Uapaca bojeri) are endemic to Madagascar and provide the locals with resources that are usually associated with important financial inputs. Among these resources, silk moths are developing in tapia woods including Borocera cajani, locally named landibe. B. cajani silk is widely used in Malagasy tradition. These woods also provide habitat for other less known silk moth species, including those belonging to the Psychidae family. Two objectives were defined in the present study: (1) The evaluation of Psychidae populations in Arivonimamo through an entomological inventory and (2) the determination of the role of Psychidae in the life of local population. We also have extracted silk from Psychidae silk moth. Insect inventories conducted from February to May 2010 show that the numbers of Psychidae do not vary significantly during the inventoried period, and that between 2 and 26 individuals are observed per 1,000 m2. Almost all interviewed people underline that Psychidae silk is no longer exploited. By applying, on Psychidae cocoons, the silk extraction method usually applied on landibe, we were able to obtain silk. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Drawing on first–hand accounts of possession experiences in an Afro–Brazilian cult and Dolphin encounters at sea, we compare the two settings in order to identify the common features in people’s experiences, but also in the technologies of enchantment that make them possible. By “technology of enchantment”, we mean a space of practice, neither totally material, nor totally subjective, that supports “revelation”–like encounters with real or imagined intentional entities. Our analysis suggests that both types of experiences share at least five common traits: the presence of a prolific imagination marked by ontological and epistemological uncertainty; uncanny feelings; attentional focus on inner bodily and mental states; trance–like states; and an intentional shift from active to passive. The immersion of the individual in a sensorily organized environment (sensescape), made of distributed perceptual saliences, is found to play a central role in the merging of unusual body states with the imagination, which in turn enables the production of “new” embodied meanings belonging to enchantment [less ▲]

The variation of fragmentation rate constants as a function of the parent ion internal energy, or, alternatively, as a function of temperature, is crucial information to unravel the dissociation mechanisms of molecular ions. This contribution provides the reader first with basic information on the statistical theories used to model unimolecular rate constants. Various experimental methods to measure such rate constants in the 102 to 1010 s^(-1) range are then discussed. Kinetic isotope effects are also briefly dealt with. How reaction mechanisms can be inferred from kinetic data is handled in an extensive section where selected examples from the recent literature are discussed. [less ▲]

The tapia woodland, an endemic ecosystem of Madagascar, plays an important role in the household economy of the local communities. The dependence of local people on the tapia woodland has led to the disturbance and degradation of this ecosystem. In this context, the current study aimed to identify and analyze the anthropogenic factors leading to the degradation of the tapia woodland in Arivonimamo. The working hypothesis was that fire constitutes today the main disturbance factor of the tapia woodland in Arivonimamo, leading to the deforestation and to a continuous degradation of this ecosystem. A typology of indicators of vegetation disturbance was established based upon literature; it was followed by an inventory of these indicators along four transects situated orthogonally around the six villages of the study site. This study showed that fire is no longer the main cause of deforestation and degradation of tapia woodlands in Arivonimamo. The continuing degradation of the woodland is mainly caused by illegal logging by the local population. These results provide key information to improve the management of the tapia woodlands in Arivonimamo. [less ▲]

The importance of tyrosine phosphorylation in normal cell physiology is well established, highlighted by the many human diseases that stem from abnormalities in protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) and protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) function. Contrary to earlier assumptions, it is now clear that both PTKs and PTPs are highly specific, non-redundant, and tightly regulated enzymes. Hematopoietic cells express particularly high numbers of PTKs and PTPs, and aberrant function of these proteins have been linked to many hematopoietic disorders. While PTK inhibitors are among FDA approved drugs for the treatment of leukemia and other cancers, efforts to develop therapeutics that target specific PTPs are still in its infancy. Here, we describe methods on how to evaluate effects of PTP inhibitors on T cell receptor signaling. Moreover, we provide a comprehensive strategy for compound prioritization, applicable to any drug discovery project involving T cells. We present a testing funnel that starts with relatively high-throughput luciferase reporter assays, followed by immunoblot, calcium flux, flow cytometry, and proliferation assays, continues with cytokine bead arrays, and finishes with specificity assays that involve RNA interference. We provide protocols for experiments in the Jurkat T cell line, but more importantly give detailed instructions, paired with numerous tips, on how to prepare and work with primary human T cells. Our understanding of the mechanisms of loss and recovery of consciousness, following severe brain injury or during anesthesia, is changing rapidly. Recent neuroimaging studies have shown that patients with chronic disorders of consciousness and subjects undergoing general anesthesia present a complex dysfunctionality in the architecture of brain connectivity. At present, the global hallmark of impaired consciousness appears to be amultifaceted dysfunctional connectivity pattern with both within-network loss of connectivity in awidespread frontoparietal network and between-network hyperconnectivity involving other regions such as the insula and ventral tegmental area. Despite ongoing efforts, the mechanisms underlying the emergence of consciousness after severe brain injury are not thoroughly understood. Important questions remain unanswered:What triggers the connectivity impairment leading to disorders of consciousness? Why do some patients recover from coma, while others with apparently similar brain injuries do not? Understanding these mechanisms could lead to a better comprehension of brain function and, hopefully, lead to new therapeutic strategies in this challenging patient population. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The present contribution provides an overview of various issues susceptible to arise in the international management of intellectual property right. Chapter I deals with patents and describes, on the one hand, a variety of legal options (novelty, exhaustivity, mandatory licensing, ...) that States can take to influence the management of patent portfolios abroad and, on the other hand, the forum shopping strategies that multinationals may implement to take advantage from the rules that favor them most. Chapter II deals with traditional knowledge issues and lists the various methods of protection – whether defensive or offensive – that States may implement to prevent free exploitation of traditional knowledge abroad. Sui generis regimes, trade secrecy, unjust enrichment and extra contractual liability are discussed. Various examples are given. [less ▲]

In the region of Charleroi (Belgium), a series of criminal acts were committed by the same group, using the same vehicle. The events were located in space and time. The car used during these criminal activities was stolen (first event) and was later retrieved (last event) after a period of 4 days of offences. Police recorded a crucial clue: the total mileage covered by the vehicle between the first and the last event was estimated with an admissible approximation. Thanks to this information, we were able to choose the most probable journey-to-crime among several scenarios. These depended on the combination of cost surfaces built with distance propagation algorithms starting from each criminal event in raster mode. The distance propagations were limited to the road network and the combinations of the cost surfaces had to respect the chronology of the facts. The most plausible scenario suggested that the criminals hided the car into a withdrawal site between their activities. In order to improve the precision of the location of this withdrawal site, we used a multi-criteria analysis taking account of the journey of the vehicle and other environment variables. At the end of these treatments, the small stretch of road that we isolated actually included the withdrawal site, as confirmed by the police later [less ▲]
