by focusing on the concept of world propsed by Boltanski and his pragmatic perspective which in previous work has enabled me to cast a critical eye on new social resistance movements. For Boltanski, what matters is the potential for emancipation to be found in the everyday practices of social actors, directly engaged in the world. He assigns to the sociologist the role of discerning what practices have emancipatory potential because they resist dominant discourses, alter institutional, legitimate accounts of reality which can perhaps lead to social change. There is however a temptation in Boltanski’s work to return to an idealist perspective which shoehorns the emancipatory potential of the everyday practices of social actors into a conceptual and thus intellectual framework: le registre métacritique (ou métapragmatique) auquel seul le sociologue peut avoir accès. Ce registre est unable to give us new perspectives on what might concretely constitute emancipation. In other words, the danger is that even Boltanski’s work will not achieve critical renewal. Therefore I will propose a way out of this impasse by refusing to evaluate emancipation against the test of a (re)turn to an ideal state (whether transcendental or transcendent), but instead embedded in the lived material existence of social actors. Because we cannot be certain where these actions will lead, as sociologists we must accept uncertainty and contingency comme nous l’enseigne Bruno Latour, cet autre auteur français qui se réclame également aujourd’hui du pragmatisme. Or scruter l’emancipation potentielle que recellent ces pratiques est nécessaire si l’on veut évaluer which, amongst them, have the potential to yield social transformation. In sum, in what follows [less ▲]

This chapter aims to provide an introduction to the different ways in which uncertainty can be dealt with computational modelling of biological processes. The first step is model establishment under uncertainty. Once models have been established, data can further be used to select which of the proposed models best meets the predefined criteria. Subsequently, parameter values can be optimized for a specific model configuration. Sensitivity analyses allow to assess the influence of the previous choices on the model output. Additionally, model adaptation permits to focus on specific aspects of the model without losing its global predictive capacity. Finally, predictions with the established models should also consider the effect of uncertainty in the model development process. [less ▲]

With a few exceptions, the emerging field of production studies has dealt mainly with the analysis of Western film industries. This chapter addresses this gap by looking at the growing African digital film production industries in Southern Nigeria and Ethiopia, and by pointing out the specificities of the production cultures that have emerged within this context. By applying an ethnographic approach to the study of film production, this chapter highlights the ambiguous position that digital film production occupies in these two countries between, on the one hand, the creation of new avenues of economic and social mobility, and on the other the emergence of strategies of exclusion and control. Abstract The aim of this article is to review some common opinions on changes in pubertal timing and shed new light both on the indicators used in assessing pubertal timing and the underlying mechanisms. While emphasis is usually on advancement in timing of female puberty, it appears that timing also changes in males, both towards earliness for the initial pubertal stages and towards lateness for the final stages. Such findings suggest that the environmental influences on pubertal timing are more complex than initially thought. Moreover, self-evaluated pubertal timing versus peers provides information that is not always consistent with observations at physical examination, suggesting that both perspectives should be considered, especially when studying the correlation between pubertal timing and psychosocial aspects. The mechanisms of changes in pubertal timing may involve both central neuroendocrine control and peripheral effects in tissues targeted by gonadal steroids. Though energy availability is certainly a clue to the mechanism of pubertal development, changes in the control of both energy balance and control of reproduction may vary under the influence of common determinants such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals. These effects can take place right before puberty as well as much earlier, during fetal and neonatal life. Finally, environmental factors can interact with genetic factors in determining changes in pubertal timing. Therefore, the variance in pubertal timing is no longer to be considered under the absolutely separate control of environmental and genetic determinants.  [less ▲]

Trying to describe polytheism is a difficult enterprise because the whole system can be seen as a complex structure, each element of which (a deity with its proper name) is both itself a complex set of prerogatives, and at the same time, must be considered in concert with the other elements. After a brief historiographical overview, this paper focuses on the first aspect by using the notion of ‘network’ as a metaphor to refer to the complexity of the ancient Greek gods. It provides two case studies, of the Moirai and the goddess Hera. The paper concludes that polytheism can be described if one conceptualises the complexity of the gods—their unity and diversity—together at every level (Panhellenic and local, cult and myths, and so on). The Council of Europe and the European Union are major players and partners in the domain of policy-shaping strategies on the European continent, with significant and ever-growing impact on international community as a whole. Although the ratio and ideas behind their establishment were not the same (economic versus humanistic), they have, over the time, acquired a similar attitude towards a number of legal issues, including protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Unlike the Council of Europe, which perceived human rights as a cornerstone of its founding pillars, the EU took a longer way to incorporate them in its priority areas. The latter shift was, however, rapid, and these days one is witnessing a large-scale cooperation instituted between respective regional organisations with the aim of creating a human-rights-friendly environment. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on one particular segment of their cooperation in the field of human rights protection—asylum law. For the fact that Europe attracts a large contingency of people looking for better life and new beginnings, asylum matters have moved swiftly to the forefront of the Council of Europe and EU standard-setting policies. Nevertheless, the existence of two parallel legal regimes has not led to an inconsistent asylum policy. In order to illustrate the Council of Europe and EU distinctive approaches to asylum, as well as their manifold interplay in the respective arena, the paper summarises the most notable pieces of their legal and regulatory framework and offers an insight into some of the leading asylum cases brought before the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union. The identification of causal or predictive variants/genes/mechanisms for disease-associated traits is characterized by “complex” networks of molecular phenotypes. Present technology and computer power allow building and processing large collections of these data types. However, the super-rapid data generation is counterweighted by a slow-pace for data integration methods development. Most currently available integrative analytic tools pertain to pairing omics data and focus on between-data source relationships, making strong assumptions about within-data source architectures. A limited number of initiatives exist aiming to find the most optimal ways to analyze multiple, possibly related, omics databases, and fully acknowledge the specific characteristics of each data type. A thorough understanding of the underlying assumptions of integrative methods is needed to draw sound conclusions afterwards. In this chapter, the authors discuss how the field of “integromics” has evolved and give pointers towards essential research developments in this context. [less ▲]

Flooding on Cambodian land use systems is not a new phenomenon but its significance has increased in the context of global environmental changes. This study aims to assess the vulnerability of agricultural production to floods in the Sangkae River watershed in Battambang province, Northwestern Cambodia. The study was conducted in conjunction with the provincial spatial planning team hosted by the Provincial Department of Land Management and can be viewed as a first step toward a flood management decision-making tool for provincial authorities. The assessments rest on specific dimensions of vulnerability (exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity) at different levels in a multi-scale framework: spatial scale (watershed, commune and household); temporal scale (decade, year and season); and institutional scale (national policy, provincial operating rules and communal agencies). The analysis rests on triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data (time-series rainfall data, land use systems, participatory flood mapping, commune workshops (n=31), social-economic statistical databases, in-depth interviews with relevant institutions (n=5) and household surveys (n=162). Intensification of rainfall since the 1920s has increased the risk of flooding in the Sangkae River watershed during the late rainy season, particularly in the upstream area. Using an indicator-based approach, we discovered that the vulnerability of communes is highly dependent on the agro-ecology of land use systems. The household assessment reveals the variability of adaptive capacity between households according to their food security status and income portfolio. Agricultural innovation and structural adaptation to flood are scarce; the households mostly cope with flood through credit, external aid and de-capitalization (sale of household assets). These coping mechanisms adopted by farmers do not reduce vulnerability but reinforce it.The application of this assessment methodology provides nested pictures of vulnerability at different levels and scales and we argue that a dialogue between these levels and scales is necessary to understand the nature of the vulnerability and to act to reduce it. Using these different typologies of vulnerability, this approach enables recommendations to be formulated to reduce vulnerability through better horizontal and vertical integration of institutions and agencies, and effective collective action. Political parties are key political actors in both Quebec and Wallonia. As their foremost ambition is to govern their region, these parties clearly contribute to shaping its identity and image. This chapter aims at exploring how political parties in Quebec and in Wallonia speak about their region by focusing on an analysis of their electoral manifestos for the period 1994–2014. Using a quantitative and qualitative approach combining insights from lexicometry, cognitive linguistics and political science, the aims of this contribution are (i) to unravel how the parties perceive their region and its future development, (ii) to identify relevant evolutions in their perception of their respective region, and (iii) to assess to what extent parallels can be drawn between the two regions.

Achieving scientific literacy is recognized as an essential goal of secondary school education. This obviously implies that science teachers, themselves, need to be scientifically literate, which in turn requires that emphasis should be placed on Nature of Science (NoS) issues in university pre-service (and also in-service) teacher education courses. A review of the research literature reveals that the beliefs and the understanding of teachers about NoS are often simplistic and lacking internal consistency. Research has also shown that explicit approaches towards NoS teaching are more efficient than implicit ones, and that analysis of historic cases can be an effective teaching tool. Based on an analysis of the existing literature and on their teaching experience, the authors propose a NoS curriculum for pre-service science teachers in chemistry, biology and physics and critically discuss a case example of NoS teaching practice consisting of four weekly seminars of two hours each. These seminars focus on identifying the learners’ preconceptions through team work, on discussing explicitly key NoS concepts and epistemological theories based on an inductive approach, and on highlighting the pedagogical implications. Suggestions for teaching the history of science (with emphasis on chemistry) are also provided. [less ▲]
