The summer 2003 was abnormally hot, sunny and dry. The average temperatures from June to August were the highest ever recorded in the Belgian reference meteorological station of Uccle, but also in other countries of western and central Europe such as Portugal, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Many human activities were affected by these particular climatic conditions, among which agriculture. The Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) applied on ten-daily SPOT- VEGETATION imagery is one of the drought indicators which could serve for the localisation of drought affected areas in Belgium. In this paper preliminary results show that detection of dry events is possible using historical averages of NDWI. Relative NDWI images can be used to monitor the development of the summer drought. These images are computed by the weighted difference between the NDWI values during this summer and its value at the same period in a reference year, which corresponds to a normal year in terms of rainfall availability. Analysis of the relation between NDWI and NDVI behaviours show that the green biomass influences the NDWI value especially during the growing season. More accurate study has to be done to individualize the specific NDWI behaviour during dry events. In perspectives, index validation with meteorological parameters and with the Relative Soil Moisture Index, which is an output of the Belgian Crop Growth Monitoring System, will improve this study. We explored the effects of aging on memory for the temporal context, assessed by a list discrimination task with unfamiliar faces. In a first experiment, we compared incidental and intentional encoding of the temporal context in young and older adults. The results indicated that list discrimination performance declines with aging. Moreover, intentional encoding of the temporal context does not improve performance of neither group, compared to incidental encoding. In a second experiment, each list was associated with a different encoding context. The results showed age differences on list discrimination performance when participants tried to remember the encoding context of the items as a cue to retrieve their list of occurrence. However, there is no age difference when participants relied on some other processes, mainly involving the assessment of the strength of the memory for the item. The difficulty of older adults to use a reconstruction process may be partly due to a less efficient encoding of the contextual information necessary to reconstruct the temporal context of the event. The story of cities and nature is both a love-story and a battle and in both, green structure may be a useful concept. Structuring the scattered archilelago of green areas means joining forces in a battle to defend vulnerable green spaces against busy traffic, construction works and other dynamic urban pressures. But green may also describe a policy to create conditions for the love-story between urban citizens and their parks and playgrounds. Both the rich and the poor benefit from the presence of a green network, a green structure that links small gardens and neighbourhood greens to the green fingers and green belts of the urban landscape. Moreover, bringing landscape to the heart of the city, green structure planning strengthens the attractive green image of the city and creates links with the historic landscape in which the city has developped its identity. This report is a platform for the exchange of European experiences. It focuses on know-how aiming to plan, create and maintain such green structures. Through concrete examples of planning and design at 3 different scales in Belgium, this paper tries to put into the light various elements contributing to such purposes. [less ▲]

The text presents a series of photographs of daily life in some gated cities of America, mainly dedicated to white old people. The idea defended within this presentation is that tomorrow's wolrd will see more and more often close cohabitation between very poor people and very (or rahter) rich ones, which will lead to more and more walls in our landscapes and cities. La Stratégie européenne de sécurité adoptée en décembre 2003 par l'Union européenne définit un cadre normatif et des principes directeurs. En cela, elle n'est pas un véritable concept stratégique et encore moins une doctrine. Critical general theory, mainly from the marxist tradition seems to see society as dominated from above : social crativity can be compared with a stew in a pot that is above to explode if one does not take off the lid. From various parts of social theory (Boltanski, Negri, Castoriadis...) we can present an alternative view where domination has penetrated within the pot : contradictions are not only between the bottom and the top but everywhere within society and inside people themselves. A critical theory must accomodate this view that seems more convincing than the traditional one. [less ▲]

In recent years, various mass spectrometry procedures has been developed for identifying bacteria. The accuracy and speed with which data can be obtained by Matrix-assisted laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) make this an advantageous technique for environmental monitoring. However, minor variations in the sample preparation can influence the mass spectra significantly. In the present study, we have introduced a procedure to prepare bacteria by microextraction and we have optimized experimental parameters for rapid identification by MALDI-TOF-MS of whole bacterial cells isolated from environmental samples such as wastewater and soil. Neoplasms of the urinary tract and male genital tract account for 32% of new cancers in males. Prostatic carcinoma is one of the most prevalent malignant tumors of the male reproductive organs, with an estimated 230,110 new cases and 29,900 deaths during the year 2004 in the United States. Although prostate cancer in its early stages is responsive to the standard treatments, no currently available treatment produces a survival advantage to patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer. This lack of efficacy for the existing protocols points to the need for the development of effective regimens for treating or preventing these tumors. Vitamin C (VC) and vitamin K3 (VK3) administered to androgen independent prostate cancer cell lines in a VC:VK3 ratio of 100:1 exhibit synergistic antitumor activity and preferentially kill tumor cells by autoschizis, a novel type of cell death characterized by exaggerated membrane damage and progressive loss of organelle-free cytoplasm through a series of self-excisions. During this process, the nucleus becomes smaller; cell size decreases to 1/2 - 1/3 of its original size and most organelles surround an intact nucleus in a narrow rim of cytoplasm. While the mitochondria are condensed, tumor cell death does not result from ATP depletion. However, administration of the vitamin combination does: induce a G1/S and a G2/M block in the cell cycle, diminish DNA synthesis, increase hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production and decrease cellular thiol levels. These effects can be prevented by the addition of catalase to scavenge the H2O2. There is a concurrent 8- to 10-fold increase in intracellular Ca2+ levels. Electrophoretic analysis of DNA reveals degradation due to the caspase-3 independent reactivation of DNase I by VK3 and DNase II by VC. Redox cycling of the vitamins is believed to increase oxidative stress until it surpasses the reducing ability of cellular thiols and induces Ca2+ release which triggers activation of Ca2+ dependent DNase and leads to degradation of DNA. Recent experiments indicate oral VC :VK3 increases the life span of tumor bearing nude mice and significantly reduces the growth rate of solid tumors without any significant toxicity by reactivating DNase I and II. Experimental animal studies indicate that autoschizis is also evident when the vitamin combination is administered to nude mice with implanted human prostate tumors. In a pilot clinical trial, end-stage prostate cancer patients given oral VC:VK3 are monitored by measuring prostate-specific antigen (PSA, a known serum marker of prostate tumor cells specific activity) and total serum homocysteine (a marker of tumor cell numbers with sensitivity for early detection of tumor cell death). The results show that the vitamin combination induces an immediate drop in tumor cell numbers, while serum PSA levels show an initial rise and a subsequent drop to below pretreatment levels. Taken together these facts suggest that the vitamin combination may offer great potential as a new antitumoral chemotherapy. The following chapter discusses the mechanisms of action employed by these vitamins to induce tumor specific death by autoschizis and examines the potential of the vitamin combination as an antitumor agent, chemosensitizer or a radiosensitizer in the treatment of prostatic neoplasms. Solid calli and derived liquid cell cultures were initiated from one-year-old roots of Panax ginseng CA Meyer. Half-strength Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented classically with an auxin and a cytokinin did not appear favourable for biomass accumulation nor for a high ginsenoside content. Changes in the levels of mineral nutrients, sucrose and growth regulators were preliminary investigated here to improve growth and ginsenoside production in liquid cultures. The hypothesis that ginseng cells released growth inhibitors in the medium was not supported by the results obtained in experiments involving frequent transfers to fresh growth medium [less ▲]

This paper presents a new rationale for delegation. In a repeated relationship, when the principal gives up at time t the control over an action to the better informed agent, the decision taken by the agent signals his private information to the principal. The revelation of information is valuable to the principal only in a context of repeated relation where the principal can use the information at time t + 1 to take another decision. In this paper, we present an example where delegation occurs only if the relation lasts for more than one period. In a single period context, if the agent has a bias in favor of one project, he does not have incentives to select a project that is not his preferred one; hence he does not disclose his private information and delegation is not valuable. While in a repeated relationship, it becomes costly for the agent to keep the principal non-informed and this counterbalances the agent’s bias for one project. Shared-control (partial delegation) is then the preferred organizational structure when the interaction is repeated. Moreover, shared-control dominates an alternative mechanism where the principal centralizes all the decisions and the information is transferred through a message game. [less ▲]

The purpose is to try to understand what is the real situation of families and individuals across countries and socio-economic categories. For those of them still at work we are interested to know how they are preparing for old days’ consumption, and, for those already retired, how they meet their old age needs. We know that for some of them, facing liquidity constraints or bad health, consumption will be restricted, whereas others will be able to save from their current income, while a third group will be composed of net dissavers. In this contribution, we are particularly interested in the distributive issues pertaining to these three dimensions taken together. In the first section we explain some data issues and methodological choices. The second section is devoted to the presentation of Lorenz curves and Gini coefficients by macro-regions and countries, and the third section to a comparative study of I-C-W distribution across age categories. Some conclusions and potential lines of research for the future end this contribution. [less ▲]
