A general approach to real-time transient stability control is described, yielding various complementary techniques: pure preventive, open loop emergency, and closed loop emergency controls. Recent progress in terms of a global transient stability constrained optimal power flow are presented, yielding in a scalable nonlinear programming formulation which allows to take near-optimal decisions for preventive control with a computing budget corresponding only to a few runs of standard optimal power flow and time domain simulations. These complementary techniques meet the stringent conditions imposed by the real-life applications. [less ▲]

Positron emission tomography (PET) allows studies of cerebral metabolism and blood flow and has been widely used to investigate physiological mechanisms underlying altered states of consciousness. The aim of this chapter is to review the current literature on brain metabolism during physiological or pathological loss of consciousness including studies on disorders of consciousness arising from severe brain injury (vegetative/unresponsive or minimally conscious states), and related non-pathological conditions such as sleep and hypnotic states. Identifying brain areas specifically involved in conscious processing, these studies have contributed to our understanding of the underlying physiology of consciousness. The precuneal and cingulate cortices, for example, seem to be key areas for maintaining consciousness awareness. Other areas such as hypothalamus, amygdala or the temporo-occipital cortex seem to play a role in different states of unconsciousness such as rapid eye movement sleep and hypnosis. PET studies permit a better comprehension of the loss of consciousness, and focus the implication of specific neural areas and networks in pathologically (vegetative/unresponsive or minimally conscious states), physiologically (sleep), and hypnotically altered states of consciousness. This paper proposes to reconstruct the means of acquisition and transmission of anatomical and surgical knowledge in the period from the death of Alexander the Great (323 BC) to the reign of Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (913-959), through the study of archaeological, epigraphic, papyrological and manuscript sources. These testimonies bring to view strategies such as observation, experimentation, analogy and imitation, as well as oral and written teaching, redaction and copy of books (illustrated or not), elaboration of commentaries, abridgments, questionnaires and word-lists. A distinction will be drawn between texts which were addressed to physicians and medical students, on the one hand, those which were destined to philiatroi and to an educated readership, and finally those which might interest copyists and eventually tachygraphists. "When death knocks at the door of our ward, we do not easily open the door”, an intensivist once said. In the intensive care unit (ICU) and emergency department, care is strongly focused on cure and resuscitation. Notwithstanding the technological progress made in intensive and emergency medicine, a substantial number of the patients admitted to the ICU cannot be saved. In these cases, it is important to make a timely shift from curative efforts to palliative care, so that futile and burdensome interventions can be avoided. When death becomes imminent, a major concern of the family members and caregivers is to assure maximal comfort during the dying process. A central aspect of good end-of-life care is to keep the patient, as much as possible, free of pain and other kinds of distress. However, many critically ill patients often suffer from symptoms such as pain and delirium. More than 50 % of critically ill patients in the ICU experience moderate to severe pain and pain in critically ill patients often remains untreated [1]. [less ▲]

I discuss the role of women and erōs in court poetry, by focusing on the ruling pair, i.e. the couple par excellence, and arguing that a gentle, reciprocal love within the bonds of marriage is presented as a crucial value, ensuring wealth and social order as well as the continuity of the dynasty itself. Because court life is a fashionable source of models for the elite, the poetic motif of requited love also influences the ideal depiction of love outside the ruling pair. After focusing on how internal patterns of relationship between characters shape the role of the queen in Alexandrian court poetry, I turn to non-literary, epigraphic evidence, in order to show how poetic representations of royal love integrate into a wider ideological program. Although my study mainly concerns Ptolemaic ruling pairs, I discuss some epigraphic parallels from the Seleucid dynasty as well, so that some general observations can be made on early Hellenistic queenship. In the continuity of stakeholder theory, much of the current literature on (corporate) governance and business ethics looks at how organizations involve their stakeholders at different decision-making levels (Carroll 2004; Clarkson 1995; de Graaf & Herkströter 2007; Freeman & Reed 1983). According to Freeman (1984), stakeholders are ‘any group or individual who can affect or is affected by the achievement of an organization's purpose’ (148); typically: the owners, the managers, the workers, the volunteers, the financing bodies, the partners, the suppliers, the customers/beneficiaries, etc. A continuum of involvement can be highlighted, from the rather passive strategies (stakeholder information) to the more active ones (stakeholder representation). Among the latter, involvement or ‘cooptation’ of stakeholders in the governance structures such as the general assembly and the board of directors is increasingly presented as a strategy mirroring a long-term relationship between the organization and a particular stakeholder category (Mitchell et al. 1997). Traditionally, the owners are the category of stakeholders that is co-opted in the governance structures. Indeed, the power of decision is part of the property rights (Milgrom & Roberts 1992). It allows owners to ensure that the enterprise is run according to their own objectives. Thus, in for-profit enterprises, the investors are the owners and, as such, they have the right to decide. They exercise this right by their presence at the general assembly. But not all enterprises are investors-owned firms. In some enterprises, ownership is in the hand of other stakeholders, like in producer, consumer or worker cooperatives. Others, like nonprofit organizations, can even be seen as firms without owners (Hansmann 1996). This chapter raises the question of stakeholder involvement in social enterprises, which are ‘non-investor owned’ and can broadly be defined here as organizations pursuing social aims through their economic activity (Defourny 2001; Defourny & Nyssens 2006). In these organizations, the configuration of stakeholder involvement contrasts with that of for-profit businesses in at least two ways. First, social enterprises are more likely than other types of organizations to be set up through a process of collective entrepreneurship which often involves a diversity of actors who each have a ‘stake’ in the pursuit of one or several organizational missions (Defourny & Nyssens 2006; Haugh 2007; Petrella 2003). Second, social enterprises seem to have a stronger tendency to give a voice to the actors with whom they interact –i.e., to involve their beneficiaries, supporters, funders or partners within their governance structures (Campi et al. 2006; Huybrechts 2010; Münkner 2004; Rijpens 2010). They usually use legal forms that allow and encourage economic democracy by recognizing stakeholders other than investors the right to participate formally in the governance bodies. While, as suggested by Campi et al. (2006; 2012), the presence of multiple stakeholders observed in a number of social enterprises may be linked with the diverse goals pursued by these organizations, such presence –or absence– may be due to many factors which have no direct links with organizational goals. As suggested in this chapter, the organizational need for resources (in a broad sense) and the drive to conform to external expectations may be two key factors. In any case, the diversified patterns of stakeholder involvement in social enterprises confirm the need for a more comprehensive account of stakeholder involvement in these organizations. Although several attempts have been made to theorize stakeholder involvement in social enterprise governance, it is still a much under-researched topic. We believe that this research gap is due not only to the infancy stage in which social enterprise research is located, but also to a lack of connection and integration of this research within the broader study of organizations. Indeed, while new theoretical developments centered on the specific features of social enterprise are needed, these developments cannot be made independently from the knowledge built for more than a century regarding how organizations are structured and operate. This chapter aims to examine stakeholder involvement in social enterprise governance using two types of theoretical lenses each embodying a rich research tradition in organization theory. The first lens refers to strategy and examines organizations (in this case governance structures) in terms of their dependency on a set of resources. The second lens uses legitimacy arguments to explain organizational governance as a social construct located in a broader setting of social relationships. The first two sections will present each of these views and examine their contributions to understanding stakeholder involvement in the governance structures of social enterprises. Then, a comparative case study on work integration social enterprises will serve to illustrate how both research avenues can be combined so as to better grasp social enterprise governance as a complex and multi-dimensional practice. The parental function is an individual competence taking place within a dyadic interaction and relationship between adult and infant; and in which each parent actualizes with the infant independently from the other parent. Co-parenting, instead, concerns the ways in which mothers and fathers function together as parents, how they cooperate, support and/or undermine each other in their reciprocal presence or absence and how they manage triadic processes. This key notion inserted with good marital and parent-child relationship seems correlated with good child outcomes (e.g., Brown, et al., 2010). Numerous longitudinal studies has observed co-parenting in “traditional families” (e.g. Favez at al. 2012) and his impact on family alliance; in lesbian headed family co-parenting was studying mainly in terms of couples’ division of family labor (Patterson & Farr, 2011), which researchers view as one aspect of co-parenting (e.g., Feinberg, 2003). In this paper we observe two contrasted co-parenting in two lesbian headed families. Co-parenting will be observed at the help of Lausanne Trilogue Play approach (LTP Fivaz-Depeursinge & Corboz-Warnery’s 1999) during triadic family interaction. [less ▲]

Crowdsourcing is today a revolutionary phenomenon changing pro- foundly our ways of communicating and producing. This article is interested in two issues that are crucial to its development and impacts. On one hand, it in- vestigates the forms and limits of crowdsourcing-related citizen empowerment. It is less concerned by the now recognized fact that crowdsourcing is empower- ing, but rather focuses on the ways it does so and the architecture of the rela- tions between citizens, scientists and institutions in this new context. On the other, it discusses the question of credibility of data produced through crowd- sourcing. This question represents, in fact, the Achilles’ heel that destabilizes the rise of citizen power in the face of experts and institutions. In its discussion of these two issues, the article relies on a particularly interesting case study: the online platform of participatory monitoring of biodiversity in Belgium Observa- tions.be. The creation of databases is an occasion here for reflexivity, learning and mobilisation. It is also an occasion for the liberation of the lay citizen, as an individual, from the straightjackets delimiting the institutional, scientific and associative spaces where he remains a subject, a collaborator or a member – al- ways in a subordinate position. He becomes a peer producer, partner and discussant. More important, learning and action networks that develop in the platform cut transversally through the three spheres. We find unexpected and new cooperations between citizen, scientists and civil servants. Likewise, ac- tions developed through the platform, mainly reporting, counting campaigns and early alert systems attest new modes of action that transgress the functional and ontological division of the three spheres. The economic losses caused by post-harvest pathogens of apple and pear can still reach 25 %. There is currently an increasing demand to develop sustainable methods to control these post-harvest pathogens. Biocontrol agents are interesting candidates to answer this demand. Nevertheless, their commercial development is sometimes hampered by a low or non-reliable efficacy comparing to fungicide treatments. Fundamental research on the mode of action of the BCA and of its ecological fitness could help to overcome that phenomenon. This chapter reviews the progresses made during two decades to understand the mode of action and the ecological niche of two BCA, Pichia anomala strain K and Candida oleophila strain O. These advances required the combination of various methodologies (in vitro and in situ) and techniques (microbiology, microscopy, genome characterization, transcriptome, proteome, gene disruption. . .) which are summarized here. Importantly, the practical impact of these discoveries to improve the efficacy of the biopesticide is also highlighted. [less ▲]

This paper addresses the challenges and conditions of a sustainability transition of suburban areas in Wallonia (Belgium), articulated around energy efficiency in the building and in the transportation sectors. Three scenarios focused on the evolution of the existing building stock are modelled and assessed (the insulation of buildings, an increase in the built density and demolition / reconstruction). Our main findings show that, beyond the traditional polarization of the debates on energy efficiency of our built environment between the “compact city” and the “sprawled city”, a new pragmatic paradigm, focused on the transition of suburban areas by “densification”, can make suburban areas evolve towards more sustainability. However, these main results focused on energy efficiency need to be studied in a larger framework to concretely operationalize a suburban sustainability transition. In this perspective, concrete prospects for a further research project on “suburban densification” are proposed. There address the opportunities for transnational cooperation as well as the proposition of potential research activities. [less ▲]

This article addresses various educational cultures observed today in a variety of training and professional development contexts in the field of early childhood education. The paper also analyses methods of developing and implementing training or professional 'accompaniment'. This notion of 'accompaniment' has been developed in the context of French-speaking countries, especially in relation to the development of childcare services and the search for quality. From a case study using 'accompaniment' as a professional development initiative to consider freedom of movement for children aged birth to three years as a quality criterion in daily educational practice, the article illustrates the importance of considering innovation in the professional development of early years educators, not only as a new initiative in this specific context, but also as a signifier of the wider emergence of a new culture of professionalization where actions, actors and environment undergo change simultaneously. The LIMA index conveys the environmental interest and quality of the landscape formed by the Mediterranean benthos, ranging from 0 to − 40 m, in numerical format. The LIMA index allows a comparison spatially and temporarily between sites. It is a comprehensive index which is easy to implement and is composed of two factors: a topographical description (classification of 15 typologies) and a biological description (the presence or absence of some thirty species or groups of structuring, remarkable and invasive species). The LIMA index has been validated in he Bay of Calvi (Corsica-France) where it varies between 0.31 and 0.79 on a scale of 0.00–1.00. [less ▲]

In Belgium, marriage and adoption for gays and lesbians are legal since respectively 2003 and 2006. Despite the legalization, public opinion is still not unanimous and some heterosexuals continue to disapprove those families. This study aims at examining the correlated variables of positive and negative attitudes toward same-sex marriage and same-sex parenting. Attitudes were assessed through self-report questionnaires in a cohort of 3663 heterosexual participants that are resident in Belgium, 47% Females, 53% males aged from 18 to 61. It is hypothesized that correlates of positive attitudes toward SSM and GLP will be associated with female gender, lower religiosity, liberal political ideology, and higher education and socioeconomic status. Results suggest that females are significantly more favorable than males toward same-sex marriage. People aged between 18 and 25 are significantly more favorable than older age groups. Atheists/agnostics are significantly more favorable than all religious groups. Left-wing individuals are significantly more favorable than right-wing. Females are significantly more favorable than males toward same-sex parents. These preliminary results seem to confirm our hypothesis and underline the interest of this study. [less ▲]

Digital holographic (DH) interferometry has been developed in the long-wave infrared spectral range with CO2 lasers and microbolometer arrays. This application has been driven by the European Space Agency’s constant need of techniques for monitoring large displacements of large structures. Here the study focuses on the case of aspheric mirrors, like parabola and ellipses. Usually they are tested through interferometric wavefront error measurements which require expensive null-lenses matching each of the reflectors considered. In the case of monitoring deformation a holographic technique can be considered where the wavefront is compared with itself at different instant. Therefore the optical can be quite simple and easily reconfigurable from one reflector to another. The advantage of using long wavelength is that large deformations can be measured at once, in addition to being more immune against environmental perturbations. Another advantage of DH at such wavelengths is that the ratio between the wavelength and the pixel size allows reconstructing objects 5 to 10 times larger than with DH in the visible. In this project we considered first the case of a 1.1 meter diameter parabola for submillimeter range observations. Such specimen shows strong specular reflectivity. We have developed several set-ups with different ways to illuminate the object and to collect rays to form the object beam: either through point source or through and extended diffuser working by reflection of the laser beam. Both possibilities have been compared in terms of fringe quality as well as measurement range. We selected the diffuser illumination for applying the set-up into a large vacuum facility for measuring the deformation of the parabola between 224 and 107 K. Results of this measurement campaign are presented. A further application has been shown by observation of off-axis ellipse. In this case interferometric testing is difficult to achieve and LWIR DHI with diffuser illumination is found quite simple to implement and gives straightforward results. [less ▲]
