The study of the ‘smell of death’ is an important part of the thanatochemistry, the chemistry of death. Since 2004 (Vass et al. 2004), an increasing number of studies have been conducted to understand the body decomposition process by measuring the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) released by decaying bodies. However, the chemical profi le of the decomposition odor is still far for from being resolved. Indeed, the complexity of the VOC mixture makes it diffi cult to be carried out by classical GC-MS. A better understanding of the decomposition process could thus possibly be achieved using a multidimensional technique such as Comprehensive Two Dimensional Gas Chromatography coupled to time of fl ight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS). The high peak capacity of this multidimensional technique combined with the visualization power of multivariate statistical methods allows a deeper understanding of complex VOC matrices. [less ▲]

Blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a brain protective structure composed by endothelial cells, astrocytes and pericytes characterized by specific transport systems expressed on their surface. Moreover, the tight junctions, in the paracellular space, and the adherens junctions, in the basolateral space of the endothelial cells create a physical barrier hardly crossable from the most part of common drugs. Despite the BBB is vital for the central nervous system (CNS), it restricts drug delivery to this tissue. To overcome this obstacle many drug delivery systems (DDS) have been developed. Polymeric nanocarriers, solid lipid nanocarriers (SLN) and liposomes are developed to deliver drugs otherwise not able to pass the BBB, due to their physico-chemical characteristics. Besides their capacity to pass biological barriers, the potential advantages of nanocarriers are their capability to load a high quantity of drug with low cytotoxicity. [less ▲]

The superconducting HTS hollow cylinder has been one of the first geometries to demonstrate its utility as an efficient passive magnetic shield, and particularly for DC magnetic shielding. The shielding performances can be characterized by two parameters: (i) the shielding factor SF, defined as the ratio between the applied magnetic induction Bapp and the magnetic induction inside the shield Bin and (ii) the threshold induction Blim for which the shielding factor becomes lower than a given level. The main drawback of the hollow cylinder geometry is that the shielding is only effective in the central region of the tube and decreases towards the tube extremities because of the field penetration through the open ends. In order to improve the performances at tube extremities and hence increase the shielded volume, the tube should be closed. This can be achieved by using a superconducting vessel or by closing one or both extremities with a cap. This chapter describes the experimental and the numerical analysis of the DC shielding performances of a Bi-2223 tube closed by a superconducting Bi-2223 cap, for an axial configuration. The first part is dedicated to the experimental study of two tubes of different lengths when they are closed at one extremity or closed at both extremities. We also study the effect of the gap size between the cap and the tube. In the second part, we use numerical simulations to highlight the possible improvements and to optimize the design. In particular we study the influence of the critical current density and of the thickness of the cap. [less ▲]

This paper explores a particular aspect of the semantics of adposition borrowing, focusing on the extent to which polysemy networks associated with model language adpositions are copied in the target language. We make use of the distinction between comparative concepts and descriptive categories (Haspelmath 2010) to describe the integration of loanwords in a target language, in this case Greek-origin adpositions in Coptic. Taking the Greek-origin adposition κατά (katá) in Coptic as a case study, we show that entire polysemy networks are not borrowed. Rather, only some sections – not necessarily contiguous on a semantic map – of polysemy networks are borrowed. We conclude that this points to the possibility that loanwords are bor- rowed in individual constructions. [less ▲]

The global health environment is becoming increasingly complex. Social, demographic and epidemiological transformations fed by globali - zation, urbanization and ageing populations pose challenges of a magnitude that was not anticipated three decades ago. In addition, recent global health security threats such as the Ebola virus disease or Zika virus outbreak, and the growing mismatch between the low performance of health systems and the rising expectations of societies, are increasingly becoming a cause for political concern. This often leads to countries prioritizing, or re-prioritizing, efforts towards strengthening health systems, moving towards universal health coverage (UHC) and implementing the idea of health in all policies. Countries recognize that these calls for efficiently strengthening health systems and improving health security must be translated into robust, realistic, comprehensive, coherent and well balanced health policies, strategies and plans. In the post-Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) era, they also recognize that in pluralist, mixed, public-private health systems, these policies, strategies and plans have to relate to the entire health sector and cannot be limited anymore to “command-and-control” plans for the public sector. Functional health systems that deliver high quality services to the population are the main priority for governments. Achieving this requires permanent, well-structured and dynamic processes, with a true consensus between the demand and supply of services, as well as between governments, services providers and the population. A solid, evidence-informed policy dialogue is the only real way to achieve this in the 21st century. Furthermore, it is now widely understood that national health policies, strategies and plans (NHPSPs) extend much beyond “health care”, i.e. clinical personal services, and cover the broad public health agenda, including disaster preparedness, risk management and the Inter - national Health Regulations, encompassing action on the social determinants of health and the interaction between the health sector and other sectors in society. In the face of both these gradual and acute changes over the past decade, NHPSPs, and more importantly the process of developing the NHPSP, need to be adapted and given a different focus. This handbook attempts to address that need. In the context of the Paris, Accra and Busan principles of effective development cooperation, it is also widely recognized that in countries that receive significant external aid, NHPSPs are increasingly seen as crucial for making aid more effective. It is recognized that, during the MDGs era, plans or policies did not always fulfill their promises; this was often because of design deficiencies or implementation failures. It was common to observe that national plans were not inclusive, not comprehensive enough, often imbalanced and incoherent with the wide variety of health problems to be tackled. Often, there was a disconnect between national plans and the broader national development policies or policy frameworks, health financing strategies and macroeconomic policies. [less ▲]

Proust’s paper « Contre l’obscurité » [“Against Obscurity”], published in 1896 by La Revue blanche, has been paid back with to rather rough answers : Lucien Muhlfeld’s paper « Sur la clarté » [“About Clarity”] and « Le Mystère dans les Lettres » by Mallarmé. One of the very few polemical texts of the poet, the latter paper deals with mechanisms of poetical meaning and reciprocal adjustment of both the literary text and his reader. Three kinds of censorship are at stake here. Censorship by the obscurity (Proust). Censorship of the obscurity (Muhlfeld). Censorship with and for the sake of obscurity (Mallarmé). The whole controversy being placed under the very sign of reading and critical evaluation. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

This Chapter aims at delineating a proper ethical and legal response to the ‘dual-use dilemma’ of nuclear science and technologies. After assessing the different models of governance proposed so far for addressing the ‘dual-use’ feature of nuclear technologies, and based on precautionary, proactionary and cost/benefit approaches, it develops a framework based on the notion of ‘responsible stewardship’. This framework is based on a comprehensive analysis – through the involvement and cooperation, as much as possible, of all the stakeholders in the field – of both the advantages and the risks of the nuclear area, considering social, ethical, legal, environmental and political values. The policies then adopted are periodically and constantly revised (according to a ‘step by step’ principle) and based on the proportional balance of interests, values and rights at stake. A multilevel framework of sources and actors is involved in such a responsible process. A specific attention is devoted to the balance between the freedom to research and the security needs at the individual and at the State level, in particular focusing on Article IV of the Treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Concrete ways for applying such model are explained, in particular with regard to the control of materials, education of people, and control of information. Finally, the historical steps in the governance of nuclear technologies are explored and some examples provided for the suggested approach. [less ▲]

The role of the law in front of nuclear technologies and nuclear weapons is a meaningful one. The law is aimed to regulate the existing nuclear activities, or – at a preliminary stage – to (try to) prevent and govern the risks arising from the misuse of nuclear technologies, or to tackle the problem of nuclear proliferation. However, on many occasions, it appears that the law is inefficient to deal with these issues. Thus, the paper proposes some “best practice” legal ways to be followed, in order to build a cooperative nuclear compliance at a global level. The analysis starts from the focus on the Treaty of Non-Proliferation (NPT), highlighting the content of Article VI as judicially interpreted by the International Court of Justice, and examining the gaps and limits that the NPT still owns. After defining the notions of “verification, compliance and enforcement”, the paper concentrates on some methods and mechanisms that have been established at the international law level in general, with the purpose to obtain the respect of international rules. In the belief that the comparison could be useful as a “source of inspiration” for the nuclear non-proliferation, the chosen ways of verification and compliance pertain to the area of environmental law and trade law. On the basis of such comparison, a set of guidelines for enhancing cooperative compliance in the nuclear field is concretely offered. In particular, it is stressed to (a) collect and monitor the data; (b) reinforce the structure and action of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); (c) involve other UN bodies, of States and civil society; and (d) follow the principles of (i) the rule of law, (ii) impartiality and non-discrimination, (iii) transparency, and (iv) responsibility. This paper discusses the toponymy of Ancient Egypt, by considering its specificities in respect of the history of toponomastic sciences since Classical Antiquity from a historiographical point of view, and by dealing with the toponymic material itself. After an introductory part on the history of toponymics in Egyptology, this article intends to give a general sketch of Ancient Egyptian toponyms and their forms by addressing questions such as how toponyms were constructed, or to which part of a territory they were applied and by whom. The analysis of the toponymic stratification of Egypt then gives the opportunity to list sources and research tools that are at the disposal of Egyptologists working on toponymic matters. This article also aim at putting forward the methodological elements that one should take into account in studies of Ancient Egyptian toponymics and provides a selective bibliography in conclusion. The video industry in Nigeria has developed within a widely informal economic environment in which the illicit reproduction and circulation of goods were the rule rather than the exception. The informality of circulation has played a particularly influential role in both the history of the video industry and the genesis of the present crisis. While, on the one hand, it has made videos available all over the African continent and within the diaspora, creating the basis for Nollywood’s international success, it has, on the other hand, weakened the industry’s economy, exposing it to consecutive cycles of saturation and collapse. For this reason, the production crisis that emerged over the past few years has catalyzed numerous controversies concerning the structure of the video economy and the rules that regulate it. The informality on which the video economy has been based since its inception is today often considered a threat to the survival of the industry itself. While the industry has achieved global recognition, the economic fragility of its success has provoked growing anxiety. This anxiety has been progressively concentrated, by both media and video entrepreneurs, on issues of piracy and copyright protection. The aim of this chapter is to investigate the causes of this anxiety and the role that piracy and transformations in copyright legislation have had in catalysing it, while shaping the economy of the industry. Throughout this chapter I will argue that when the uncontrolled circulation of goods begins to undermine the economic basis of the industry that produces them, the rhetoric of piracy is mobilized to ensure the accessibility to the economy of both the production and the distribution of the goods themselves. This allows some of the entrepreneurs involved in the production process to gain exclusive control over it and the capital it generates. Within the Nigerian context, the rhetorical construction of piracy and the legal and economic consequences of this construction are the result of specific conflicts among different segments of the Nigerian video industry and, more precisely, different models of economic entrepreneurship. As the history of the Nigerian video phenomenon shows, a loose copyright regime seems to have positive consequences for the emergence and early development of a creative industry, although, once the industry seeks to attain higher levels of profitability, it tends to become problematic, and the rhetoric of piracy can become a tool to orient processes of restructuration of the cultural industry’s economy. In relation to this dynamic, I analyse the way in which the normative orders that regulate the reproduction and circulation of images and contents developed within the Nigerian context, and I discuss how their introduction and implementation progressively shaped people’s perception of legal and illegal practices in the field of local cultural production. Air entrained has become one of the main variables in the study of large spillways performance since it can help avoiding cavitation. Moreover, high rates of air concentration produce significant bulking of the flow as well as a water–solid friction reduction, generating flow acceleration and increasing maximum velocities at the inlet of the energy dissipation structure. Air entrained also affects turbulence inside the flow producing different energy dissipation rates. Aerated spillways physical models are affected by scale effects, with Weber and Reynolds numbers being usually too low to adequately reproduce observed flows. Alternatively, simulation of air–water flows can be carried out by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques in 1:1 scale. However, 3D numerical simulations of spillway flows are time expensive and air–water interfaces need fine resolution meshes which would require extensive computing. Thus, the use of a subgrid scale in air entrainment models can be useful to predict the inception point and the air concentration profile of the flow along the spillway. Computational techniques can handle a more accurate momentum distribution over the spillway sections with affordable costs. In this research, FLOW-3D® routine for turbulent air entrainment is used, coupled with variable density evaluation. VOF and κ-ε RNG turbulence model are also employed. Over 200 spillway flow simulations have been carried out to obtain optimal values of the air-entrainment model parameters, which can be used in future spillway simulations. The calibration of the model is carried out employing prototype data. Interesting conclusions are obtained concerning air entrainment model performance. [less ▲]

Lie group integrators preserve by construction the Lie group structure of a nonlinear configuration space. In multibody dynamics, they support a representation of (large) rotations in a Lie group setting that is free of singularities. The resulting equations of motion are differential equations on a manifold with tangent spaces being parametrized by the corresponding Lie algebra. In the present paper, we discuss the time discretization of these equations of motion by a generalized-alpha Lie group integrator for constrained systems and show how to exploit in this context the linear structure of the Lie algebra. This linear structure allows a very natural definition of the generalized-alpha Lie group integrator, an efficient practical implementation and a very detailed error analysis. Furthermore, the Lie algebra approach may be combined with analytical transformations that help to avoid an undesired order reduction phenomenon in generalized-alpha time integration. After a tutorial-like step-by-step introduction to the generalized-alpha Lie group integrator, we investigate its convergence behaviour and develop a novel initialization scheme to achieve second-order accuracy in the application to constrained systems. The theoretical results are illustrated by a comprehensive set of numerical tests for two Lie group formulations of a rotating heavy top. [less ▲]
