In this chapter, we provide an overview of the most highly cited motion detection meth- ods. We identify the most commonly used background models together with their features, the kind of updating scheme they use, some spatial aggregation models as well as the most widely used post-processing operations. We also provide an overview of datasets used to validate motion detection methods. Please note that this literature review is by no means exhaustive and thus we provide a list of surveys that the reader can rely on for further details. [less ▲]

When, at the very end of the 19th century the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière began to develop their cinematograph business, the company dispatched its operators throughout the world, set up a system for producing copies of films and circulating them across the globe. Many films were named after streets, bridges, plazas, intersections, monuments, etc., and were categorised as “Views”. I distinguish here “views of” and “views on” the cities, so that we can describe the relationship between public space and geographical space. I approach this corpus via two dimensions. The first has to do with the relationship to the self that is offered to the social group through the images themselves: for the first time, public space and collective life are represented in the form of “a neutral mirror” of daily life, bearing the mark of the real. The second dimension concerns the overall setup of representation: spectators were in a sense “seeing themselves” as a group for the first time. Finally I will ask to what extent these views of/on the city and its collective life, produced in this way for public projection and mass exhibition, have changed the relationship of spectators to their own collective life space.

[less ▲]

The efficiency of transfer of gases and particles across the air-sea interface is controlled by several physical, biological and chemical processes in the atmosphere and water which are described here (including waves, large- and small-scale turbulence, bubbles, sea spray, rain and surface films). For a deeper understanding of relevant transport mechanisms, several models have been developed, ranging from conceptual models to numerical models. Most frequently the transfer is described by various functional dependencies of the wind speed, but more detailed descriptions need additional information. The study of gas transfer mechanisms uses a variety of experimental methods ranging from laboratory studies to carbon budgets, mass balance methods, micrometeorological techniques and thermographic techniques. Different methods resolve the transfer at different scales of time and space; this is important to take into account when comparing different results. Air-sea transfer is relevant in a wide range of applications, for example, local and regional fluxes, global models, remote sensing and computations of global inventories. The sensitivity of global models to the description of transfer velocity is limited; it is however likely that the formulations are more important when the resolution increases and other processes in models are improved. For global flux estimates using inventories or remote sensing products the accuracy of the transfer formulation as well as the accuracy of the wind field is crucial. [less ▲]

The aeronautic industry is progressively introducing composite material in its products. Nowadays the fabrication begins to be mature, but huge efforts remains to be done on the experimental validation of these materials. More specifically, these composite materials introduce new type of defects (such as delamination, glue defects…) which need to be detected during the fabrication and maintenance to prevent failures. Moreover, the widespread use of these materials impose to the future detection instruments to be cheap, robust and easy to manipulate by non-specialists. Currently shearography is widely used for the detection of defects in the composite material. It is cheap, and relatively robust and flexible, but requires special qualification to interpret the shearograms and identify the defects. Therefore, efforts need to be carried to ease the interpretation of stereographic results for non-specialist of the technique. For this, we propose to automate the identification of defects in shearograms by the development of specific algorithms. In this paper, we present an innovative algorithm which realizes this operation. The process inspects the wrapped phase map obtained to identify high local fringe density. These potential detects are then analyzed and selected based on a set of parameter criteria such as dimensions, shape, and detection threshold. Successful results obtained on thermally solicited composite sample observed in industrial conditions are shown. We also discuss the limitations and perspective of this approach. [less ▲]

"When death knocks at the door of our ward, we do not easily open the door”, an intensivist once said. In the intensive care unit (ICU) and emergency department, care is strongly focused on cure and resuscitation. Notwithstanding the technological progress made in intensive and emergency medicine, a substantial number of the patients admitted to the ICU cannot be saved. In these cases, it is important to make a timely shift from curative efforts to palliative care, so that futile and burdensome interventions can be avoided. When death becomes imminent, a major concern of the family members and caregivers is to assure maximal comfort during the dying process. A central aspect of good end-of-life care is to keep the patient, as much as possible, free of pain and other kinds of distress. However, many critically ill patients often suffer from symptoms such as pain and delirium. More than 50 % of critically ill patients in the ICU experience moderate to severe pain and pain in critically ill patients often remains untreated [1]. [less ▲]

In the continuity of stakeholder theory, much of the current literature on (corporate) governance and business ethics looks at how organizations involve their stakeholders at different decision-making levels (Carroll 2004; Clarkson 1995; de Graaf & Herkströter 2007; Freeman & Reed 1983). According to Freeman (1984), stakeholders are ‘any group or individual who can affect or is affected by the achievement of an organization's purpose’ (148); typically: the owners, the managers, the workers, the volunteers, the financing bodies, the partners, the suppliers, the customers/beneficiaries, etc. A continuum of involvement can be highlighted, from the rather passive strategies (stakeholder information) to the more active ones (stakeholder representation). Among the latter, involvement or ‘cooptation’ of stakeholders in the governance structures such as the general assembly and the board of directors is increasingly presented as a strategy mirroring a long-term relationship between the organization and a particular stakeholder category (Mitchell et al. 1997). Traditionally, the owners are the category of stakeholders that is co-opted in the governance structures. Indeed, the power of decision is part of the property rights (Milgrom & Roberts 1992). It allows owners to ensure that the enterprise is run according to their own objectives. Thus, in for-profit enterprises, the investors are the owners and, as such, they have the right to decide. They exercise this right by their presence at the general assembly. But not all enterprises are investors-owned firms. In some enterprises, ownership is in the hand of other stakeholders, like in producer, consumer or worker cooperatives. Others, like nonprofit organizations, can even be seen as firms without owners (Hansmann 1996). This chapter raises the question of stakeholder involvement in social enterprises, which are ‘non-investor owned’ and can broadly be defined here as organizations pursuing social aims through their economic activity (Defourny 2001; Defourny & Nyssens 2006). In these organizations, the configuration of stakeholder involvement contrasts with that of for-profit businesses in at least two ways. First, social enterprises are more likely than other types of organizations to be set up through a process of collective entrepreneurship which often involves a diversity of actors who each have a ‘stake’ in the pursuit of one or several organizational missions (Defourny & Nyssens 2006; Haugh 2007; Petrella 2003). Second, social enterprises seem to have a stronger tendency to give a voice to the actors with whom they interact –i.e., to involve their beneficiaries, supporters, funders or partners within their governance structures (Campi et al. 2006; Huybrechts 2010; Münkner 2004; Rijpens 2010). They usually use legal forms that allow and encourage economic democracy by recognizing stakeholders other than investors the right to participate formally in the governance bodies. While, as suggested by Campi et al. (2006; 2012), the presence of multiple stakeholders observed in a number of social enterprises may be linked with the diverse goals pursued by these organizations, such presence –or absence– may be due to many factors which have no direct links with organizational goals. As suggested in this chapter, the organizational need for resources (in a broad sense) and the drive to conform to external expectations may be two key factors. In any case, the diversified patterns of stakeholder involvement in social enterprises confirm the need for a more comprehensive account of stakeholder involvement in these organizations. Although several attempts have been made to theorize stakeholder involvement in social enterprise governance, it is still a much under-researched topic. We believe that this research gap is due not only to the infancy stage in which social enterprise research is located, but also to a lack of connection and integration of this research within the broader study of organizations. Indeed, while new theoretical developments centered on the specific features of social enterprise are needed, these developments cannot be made independently from the knowledge built for more than a century regarding how organizations are structured and operate. This chapter aims to examine stakeholder involvement in social enterprise governance using two types of theoretical lenses each embodying a rich research tradition in organization theory. The first lens refers to strategy and examines organizations (in this case governance structures) in terms of their dependency on a set of resources. The second lens uses legitimacy arguments to explain organizational governance as a social construct located in a broader setting of social relationships. The first two sections will present each of these views and examine their contributions to understanding stakeholder involvement in the governance structures of social enterprises. Then, a comparative case study on work integration social enterprises will serve to illustrate how both research avenues can be combined so as to better grasp social enterprise governance as a complex and multi-dimensional practice. This paper proposes to reconstruct the means of acquisition and transmission of anatomical and surgical knowledge in the period from the death of Alexander the Great (323 BC) to the reign of Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (913-959), through the study of archaeological, epigraphic, papyrological and manuscript sources. These testimonies bring to view strategies such as observation, experimentation, analogy and imitation, as well as oral and written teaching, redaction and copy of books (illustrated or not), elaboration of commentaries, abridgments, questionnaires and word-lists. A distinction will be drawn between texts which were addressed to physicians and medical students, on the one hand, those which were destined to philiatroi and to an educated readership, and finally those which might interest copyists and eventually tachygraphists. Social insurance systems vary widely in terms of coverage of workers and risks, financing sources and the structure and generosity of benefits. The predominant source of financing for social insurance comes from “deductions” from payrolls. These deductions are typically categorized as either “taxes” or “contributions,” but they share the characteristics of both. Any analysis of how best to finance social insurance must thus start from an analysis of social insurance pricing: a decomposition of the insurance component (the true contribution) from the pure tax component (the true tax). Only then can an informed discussion about reforming financing mechanisms proceed. After reviewing the structure of social insurance financing and taxes in Latin America, this paper (1) discusses the problems with payroll financing of social insurance, (2) presents options for addressing these problems, (3) ties these problems to the level of informality, and (4) describes the challenges faced by policymakers in deciding how best to finance social insurance. Blackcurrants constitute an important source of potential health promoting phytochemicals (e.g. phenolic compounds, ascorbic acid) due to their antioxidant properties. Only small portions of berries are consumed fresh, most of their intake coming from processed foods, such as juices. Seven techniques were used to measure antioxidant capacity and antioxidant compounds of 10 juices. This yielded a large disparity of results. No single test, even the most popular ORAC assay, is able to compare the antioxidant capacity of similar food matrix such as blackcurrant juices. By combining tests from a large battery of « antioxidant » assays, it is possible to improve the discrimination of a food matrix by establishing a Global Antioxidant Score (GAS) which correlates well with graphical representations like Chernoff faces or stars. The latter approaches may help food industry managers and authorities to compare their « antioxidant » products with those existing on the market. [less ▲]

The use of long-wave infrared (LWIR) CO2 lasers and microbolometer arrays in digital holographic and speckle interferometry shows interesting features for full-field displacement/deformation metrology and nondestructive testing. The first one is that the long wavelength yields the measurement of larger displacements together with decreasing the sensitivity to environmental perturbations. Therefore these interferometric methods can be applied more easily in industrial field applications. Another advantage was put forward in the European project FANTOM which is presented in this paper. In addition to specklegrams, the thermal background is captured simultaneously. Therefore in displacement metrology one can correlate uniquely the temperature and displacement information at the same time and in each pixel. We describe the successful achievements of the project. Thorough understanding of optics and speckle interferometry crossed with state-of-art in thermam imaging systems allowed to study this new hybrid technique in deep and tackle some specific constraints for reaching the best performances. As a result, a mobile instrument has been developed and validated on various industrial structural testing facilities and inspection areas. It has been used in thermomechanical measurements as well as in detection of defects in aeronautical composites. In particular we show that the two parts of the signal (the thermal part on one hand and the interferograms showing the deformation on the other hand) yield complementary information. A very interesting result is that it allows increasing the probability of detecting defects, for some of them are better seen in the thermal signal, whereas others appear only through local surface deformation. The LIMA index allows a comparison spatially and temporarily between sites. It is a comprehensive index which is easy to implement and is composed of two factors: a topographical description (classification of 15 typologies) and a biological description (the presence or absence of some thirty species or groups of structuring, remarkable and invasive species). The LIMA index has been validated in he Bay of Calvi (Corsica-France) where it varies between 0.31 and 0.79 on a scale of 0.00–1.00. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
