The objective of my paper is to present a psychopathological conception of psychopathy and compare it with the mainstream nosographic diagnosis (antisocial personality disorder in DSM-5 and the design of psychopathy according to the PCL-R). This theoretical essay is informed by clinical situations involving psychopaths who were interviewed in prison or in forensic centres. The method applied a phenomenological psychopathology analysis to the clinical material. I first compare Binswanger’s conception of mania with psychopathic functioning. Patients’ behaviour is similar but the difference relates to the dialectic between the ego and the alter ego. A patient with mania has a fundamental crisis of the ego, which a psychopath does not have. A second finding concerns emotions and the adaptive dimension of psychopathy. An epistemological discussion of the concept of emotions reveals that psychopaths are competent at managing emotional stimuli, which confers a psychological advantage upon them. Finally, a reflection on empathy and sympathy clarifies the presentation of “psychopathic being-in-the-world”. Starting with the tension between clinical practice and critique of the dominant diagnostic scales, we can consider that the “essential characteristics” of the psychopathic disorder are reification of the alter ego without presenting an ego-related disorder, the adaptive benefits of emotional coldness, and empathic skills without sympathy. In order to understand the dynamic of the (sub)urbanisation and so, to quantify the anthropogenic effects of the rapid growth of tropical cities, it is crucial to find and apply valuable methods. In this contribution, the transferability of the Rüdisser et al. (2012) «Distance to Nature» hemeroby assessment method to the landscape surrounding the city of Lubumbashi (DRC) is evaluated. That methodology has the advantage of taking structural connectivity into account by computing the distance to natural habitats. As it had never been applied to an African city before, some adjustments (fitting of the local land uses types into the hemeroby levels designed to Austria) and amendments (suppression of the final classification into hemeroby level simplification) are proposed. Moreover, an analysis of the decanal (2002-2013) hemeroby dynamics is presented. Results suggest that the Distance to Nature methodology is transferable but requires good field knowledge to define reference habitats and identify them in the Landsat classified images. There was a dramatic decrease of the «natural» and «near-natural» levels in the study extent during the studied period. In addition, 32% of the land underwent anthropisation increase, mostly around cities and following a ribbon development. [less ▲]

This paper deals with adnominal possession in Ancient Egyptian, focusing on constructions involving a pronominal possessor. In early Egyptian, a single construction is attested: substantive (possessee) + bound person marker (possessor). From the 6th Dynasty onwards, a new construction, which is built from a demonstrative determiner, appears: pAy + bound person marker (possessor) + substantive (possessee). In order to describe the gradual encroachment of the innovative possessive determiner pAy-f on the older construction with the possessive bound person marker, this study proposes a discourse-oriented analysis, using the notion of ‘subjective deixis.’ [less ▲]

[less ▲]

In this chapter, it is argued that Weber's particular combination of Von Kries' naturalistic paradigm and Rickert's antinaturalistic paradigm might become less puzzling if we return to the interpretation that emerged in the middle of the nineteen-twenties within the South-Western School of neo-Kantianism. The basic intuition which underlies this interpretation is that the social sciences are best understood as generalizing cultural sciences. On this understanding, they differ both from the natural sciences and the historical sciences. [less ▲]

This chapter reports on the two PACITA summers schools, which were aimed at teaching TA as well as enhancing mutual-learning activities. The first summer school concentrated on the topic ‘Renewable Energy Systems- role and use of PTA’ and it was held in Liege in June 2012. The second summer school addressed the topic of ‘Ageing and Technology’, and was held in Cork in June 2014. We describe the rationale and format of the summer school in order to present a comprehensive account of how it was introduced TA, both its rational and its methods, to a new audience. We argue that as the responsible innovation agenda continues to gain traction among policy makers, societal actors and academics, education initiatives such as TA summer schools can have an important role to play in the future of the governance of science, technology and innovation. In the fight against terrorism States have resorted to a variety of weapons. Much attention has been devoted to criminal law as a possible answer to terrorism. Many States have also resorted to nationality law, using deprivation as a means to punish those involved in terrorism. This paper will focus on Belgium and France. These two countries indeed present striking similarities. Both in France and Belgium the provisions on deprivation already made it possible to deprive a national of his citizenship in terrorist cases. Nevertheless, the legislation in these countries has been recently modified to offer yet a stronger answer to terrorism. The public debate in the two countries is modelled on similar lines. This is in particular true for the issue of equality arising in connection of deprivation of nationality. The paper will first offer an overview of the existing statutory provisions in the two countries, before critically reviewing the discussion on equality and non discrimination. [less ▲]

The video industry in Nigeria has developed within a widely informal economic environment in which the illicit reproduction and circulation of goods were the rule rather than the exception. The informality of circulation has played a particularly influential role in both the history of the video industry and the genesis of the present crisis. While, on the one hand, it has made videos available all over the African continent and within the diaspora, creating the basis for Nollywood’s international success, it has, on the other hand, weakened the industry’s economy, exposing it to consecutive cycles of saturation and collapse. For this reason, the production crisis that emerged over the past few years has catalyzed numerous controversies concerning the structure of the video economy and the rules that regulate it. The informality on which the video economy has been based since its inception is today often considered a threat to the survival of the industry itself. While the industry has achieved global recognition, the economic fragility of its success has provoked growing anxiety. This anxiety has been progressively concentrated, by both media and video entrepreneurs, on issues of piracy and copyright protection. The aim of this chapter is to investigate the causes of this anxiety and the role that piracy and transformations in copyright legislation have had in catalysing it, while shaping the economy of the industry. Throughout this chapter I will argue that when the uncontrolled circulation of goods begins to undermine the economic basis of the industry that produces them, the rhetoric of piracy is mobilized to ensure the accessibility to the economy of both the production and the distribution of the goods themselves. This allows some of the entrepreneurs involved in the production process to gain exclusive control over it and the capital it generates. Within the Nigerian context, the rhetorical construction of piracy and the legal and economic consequences of this construction are the result of specific conflicts among different segments of the Nigerian video industry and, more precisely, different models of economic entrepreneurship. As the history of the Nigerian video phenomenon shows, a loose copyright regime seems to have positive consequences for the emergence and early development of a creative industry, although, once the industry seeks to attain higher levels of profitability, it tends to become problematic, and the rhetoric of piracy can become a tool to orient processes of restructuration of the cultural industry’s economy. In relation to this dynamic, I analyse the way in which the normative orders that regulate the reproduction and circulation of images and contents developed within the Nigerian context, and I discuss how their introduction and implementation progressively shaped people’s perception of legal and illegal practices in the field of local cultural production. Many Belgian retire well before the statutory retirement age. Numerous exit routes from the labor force can be identified: old‐age pensions, conventional early retirement, disability insurance, and unemployment insurance are the most prominent ones. We analyze the retirement decision of Belgian workers adopting an option value framework, and pay special attention to the role of health status. We estimate probit models of retirement using data from SHARE. The results show that health and incentives matter in the decision to exit from the labor market. Based on these results, we simulate the effect of potential reforms on retirement. [less ▲]

Building on the heuristic principles of Sociology of Organised Action, this chapter aims to analyse the inter-institutional conception of Area Security Plans in Belgium. This collective decision takes the form of successive informal dialogue steps, culminating in ratification at the legal body originally instituted for the purpose of dialogue. Considering the concept of ‘apparent consensus’ and its conditions of implementation allows us to reveal the plural nature of collective decision-making when realised in practice. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The superconducting HTS hollow cylinder has been one of the first geometries to demonstrate its utility as an efficient passive magnetic shield, and particularly for DC magnetic shielding. The shielding performances can be characterized by two parameters: (i) the shielding factor SF, defined as the ratio between the applied magnetic induction Bapp and the magnetic induction inside the shield Bin and (ii) the threshold induction Blim for which the shielding factor becomes lower than a given level. The main drawback of the hollow cylinder geometry is that the shielding is only effective in the central region of the tube and decreases towards the tube extremities because of the field penetration through the open ends. In order to improve the performances at tube extremities and hence increase the shielded volume, the tube should be closed. This can be achieved by using a superconducting vessel or by closing one or both extremities with a cap. This chapter describes the experimental and the numerical analysis of the DC shielding performances of a Bi-2223 tube closed by a superconducting Bi-2223 cap, for an axial configuration. The first part is dedicated to the experimental study of two tubes of different lengths when they are closed at one extremity or closed at both extremities. We also study the effect of the gap size between the cap and the tube. In the second part, we use numerical simulations to highlight the possible improvements and to optimize the design. In particular we study the influence of the critical current density and of the thickness of the cap. [less ▲]

Bernard Bolzano notoriously rejected Immanuel Kant’s claim that arithmetic and geometry were grounded on synthetic a priori judgements based on pure intuition. According to Bolzano, only analysis of concepts could ground the generality of mathematical statements and proofs; such a stand would later lead to logicism (from Frege to Carnap). Far from going in this way, however, Charles Sanders Peirce, who was one of the fathers of formal logic but also a great admirer of Kant, provided semiotic reasons to believe that diagrams do have a general meaning and that they can provide a knowledge which is both general and “ampliative”. Unlike mere logical analysis, diagrams (the analogon of Kant’s schemas) help to explore concepts by going somehow “outside of them” in such a way that new knowledge is gained. This provides new support to Kant’s notion of intuitive construction, which is supposed to be both deductive and inventive [less ▲]

The role of the law in front of nuclear technologies and nuclear weapons is a meaningful one. The law is aimed to regulate the existing nuclear activities, or – at a preliminary stage – to (try to) prevent and govern the risks arising from the misuse of nuclear technologies, or to tackle the problem of nuclear proliferation. However, on many occasions, it appears that the law is inefficient to deal with these issues. Thus, the paper proposes some “best practice” legal ways to be followed, in order to build a cooperative nuclear compliance at a global level. The analysis starts from the focus on the Treaty of Non-Proliferation (NPT), highlighting the content of Article VI as judicially interpreted by the International Court of Justice, and examining the gaps and limits that the NPT still owns. After defining the notions of “verification, compliance and enforcement”, the paper concentrates on some methods and mechanisms that have been established at the international law level in general, with the purpose to obtain the respect of international rules. In the belief that the comparison could be useful as a “source of inspiration” for the nuclear non-proliferation, the chosen ways of verification and compliance pertain to the area of environmental law and trade law. On the basis of such comparison, a set of guidelines for enhancing cooperative compliance in the nuclear field is concretely offered. In particular, it is stressed to (a) collect and monitor the data; (b) reinforce the structure and action of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); (c) involve other UN bodies, of States and civil society; and (d) follow the principles of (i) the rule of law, (ii) impartiality and non-discrimination, (iii) transparency, and (iv) responsibility. [less ▲]

According to the key results of this study, 100% of participants acknowledge the existence of traditional practitioners and all have used them. 80% found the care provided by these healers to be effective. However, the study participants found them to be lacking in hygiene in their handling of products. The use of traditional healers is justified in particular by the effectiveness of care, the type of illness suffered, the possibility of credit payment and their proximity. Public actors recognize both the existence of traditional healers and their effectiveness. They deplore their clandestine operation. Traditional healers claiming to be GPs (60%) and specialists (40%) say they work illegally because of the cost of administrative acts and their mistrust of intellectuals and biomedical practitioners. They complain about the insolvency of their patients who do not honor their commitments. For an effective integration of traditional healers in the health system, it would be useful to remove administrative barriers imposed on them for a balance between ancestral legitimacy and illegality in which they work, give them access to training, accept them as full participants in the health system, and explore the possibilities of contracting. When a district heating network is fed by natural gas boilers (or biomass boilers), the selection of the network temperature level has a slight influence on the boiler efficiency which means that producing at low temperature allows only to decrease the heat losses through the network. However when a cogeneration plant based on a Rankine cycle is used, lowering the network temperature not only decreases the heat losses but also increase the electrical efficiency while decreasing the thermal efficiency. This aspect is very often overlooked when the quality of a cogeneration plant is assessed by the cogeneration efficiency namely the sum of the electrical and thermal efficiency which is misleading for decision makers. In this contribution, an existing cogeneration plant connected to a district heating network installed on the University Campus in Liège (Belgium) is used as an application test case. Based on actual operational and economic data, a detailed economic evaluation is carried out which is supported by a calibrated simulation model of the whole installation in order to study the influence of the network temperature level. As a second step, the simulation model is used again to perform a detailed exergetic analysis intended to give physical insights to the economical study. This results in a broader discussion on the several methods to assess the quality of cogeneration plants and the opportunity to develop such a technology together with district heating networks.
