[less ▲]

Here, we describe a method for locating DNA on ultrathin sections. This technique is compatible with all usual fixation and embedding procedures and can be combined with cytochemical methods. Ultrathin sections are incubated in a medium containing terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) and various non-isotopic nucleotide analogs. The labeled nucleotides bound to the surface of ultrathin sections are then visualized by an indirect immunogold labeling technique. This high-resolution method provides a powerful tool for pinpointing the precise location of DNA within biological material, even where DNA is present in very low amounts. [less ▲]

Under non-parametric market conditions, investors usually become more concerned about the return of their money than about the return on their money. Protecting assets becomes the surest if not the only path to survival and growth. High frequency trading systems, over leveraged shadow entities, flash crashes, and stealth central bank actions, to name a few, contribute to create a “Rumsfeldian” type of world in which decision makers have to cope not only with “Known knowns” – things they know that they know – but also with “Unknown unknowns” – things they don’t know that they don’t know! The goal of this chapter is to explore such a conceptual model of the “Unknown” and to derive from it a concise and coherent set of battle-tested heuristics aimed at designing effective investment strategies to protect assets. Scientific literature comprises benchmarks and typologies helping to choose between numerous available qualitative data analysis software programs. However, inventorying software functionalities tends to overshadow that researchers develops software tools in order to answer novel questions, resulting from a specific methodological trend. The variety of software tools can not be understood outside the history of the progressive emergence of different methods in social sciences, especially content analysis (between the two world wars), discourse analysis (in particular, one of its French branches) and Grounded Theory Method. Such an history helps to understand why software programs differ from one region, language, disciplines to another. At the end, it contributes to choose and use software wisely. [less ▲]

For many years, the migration and development literature has looked at the impact of financial remittances on immigrant relatives’ access to health care. More recent work on social remittances also examined the circulation of ideas and practices through migration and its impact on behavior and consumption patterns in the home country. Surprisingly, however, migration scholars have neglected the interactions between remittances and local health systems in countries of origin. This is all the more surprising considering the abundant literature on health and development that has documented numerous non-governmental initiatives to improve access to care in the Global South in recent years. Among those initiatives, community-based health insurances (CBHI) have attracted significant attention. CBHI are voluntary risk-pooling schemes run by not-for-profit organizations; they collect fees among users at the local level and organize access to care with providers. While the growing literature on CBHI is shedding light on the potential of civil society organizations to replace or compensate for weak public health systems, it forgets that —in many parts of the world— access to the necessary capital to join those schemes is still very dependent on emigration of some family members. In other words, for many families worldwide, strategies to access health care have become transnational. In this chapter we look at a specific form of CHBI that we call ‘transnational health insurance’ (THI). These insurance schemes are set up by immigrants in cooperation with a multitude of actors including, on the one hand, health insurance companies and development aid agencies in destination countries and, on the other hand, health care providers in countries of origin. THIs offer health coverage to a selected number of non-migrant relatives in the home country based on a premium paid directly by immigrants to the insurance company in their country of residence. Analyzing the creation and implementation of one THI in the Belgian-Congolese postcolonial context allow us in the last part the paper to discuss the concept of hybridity in the study of remittances as well as identify the drivers of immigrant transnational engagement in the area of health. This paper explores a particular aspect of the semantics of adposition borrowing, focusing on the extent to which polysemy networks associated with model language adpositions are copied in the target language. We make use of the distinction between comparative concepts and descriptive categories (Haspelmath 2010) to describe the integration of loanwords in a target language, in this case Greek-origin adpositions in Coptic. Taking the Greek-origin adposition κατά (katá) in Coptic as a case study, we show that entire polysemy networks are not borrowed. Rather, only some sections – not necessarily contiguous on a semantic map – of polysemy networks are borrowed. We conclude that this points to the possibility that loanwords are bor- rowed in individual constructions. [less ▲]

Louise de Savoie occupies a singular place at the French royal court : neither queen nor queen-mother, but mother of the King, she nonetheless played a prominent role in the political and cultural affairs of France. Daughter of Philippe de Bresse, duc de Savoie, she was raised at the court of her aunt, Anne de France, and married in 1488 at age 11 to Charles d’Angoulême, head of a cadet branch of the royal house of Valois. At Cognac where the couple resided, she gave birth to her illustrious children, Marguerite in 1492, and François in 1494. After the sudden death of her husband in 1496, she was herself still too young to be appointed their official guardian. Obliged to share that responsibility with Louis d’Orléans who became king in 1498, the young widow nonetheless asserted her authority in their education. How she succeeded in establishing her place at court, while her son, at first a distant heir to the throne, rose to be king in 1515, can be viewed through her astute patronage of arts and letters. Keenly aware of the power of books and images, Louise multiplied commissions that would reinforce her own position and that of her family and entourage, striving to align herself with illustrious women, past and present. Identified with “Dame Prudence” as she overcame obstacles and rivals, Louise de Savoie’s tenacious devotion to her children culminated in power that was fully recognized in the appointment of « Madame » as Regent of France. In the fight against terrorism States have resorted to a variety of weapons. Much attention has been devoted to criminal law as a possible answer to terrorism. Many States have also resorted to nationality law, using deprivation as a means to punish those involved in terrorism. This paper will focus on Belgium and France. These two countries indeed present striking similarities. Both in France and Belgium the provisions on deprivation already made it possible to deprive a national of his citizenship in terrorist cases. Nevertheless, the legislation in these countries has been recently modified to offer yet a stronger answer to terrorism. The public debate in the two countries is modelled on similar lines. This is in particular true for the issue of equality arising in connection of deprivation of nationality. The paper will first offer an overview of the existing statutory provisions in the two countries, before critically reviewing the discussion on equality and non discrimination. [less ▲]

Peter Carey’s recent novel shares the concern with ‘unoriginality’ which has become a hallmark of his later fiction. It can actually be argued that, through this new variation on a known theme, he purports to move beyond the clichéd postmodern paradox that authenticities – whether psychological or aesthetic – are always essentially made up, in order to consider the matter from another angle, pondering the perilous moment when an overtly fabricated object somehow mysteriously springs to life. If, as the title suggests, even our most personal emotions can be rationalized in terms of chemical reactions, why then could we not pursue a reverse path of investigation and envisage material reality as the source providing the components for the creation of spirit? This is the subjective context in which the protagonist Catherine, who works as a horologist (clockwork expert) in a London museum, must reconstruct a nineteenth-century mechanical swan suspected by some to be harbouring the soul of its original maker. Interestingly Catherine, herself a die-hard rationalist, finds herself shaken by a devastating bereavement which makes her unusually open to any form of consolation – including the self-indulgence of nostalgia, but also of cocaine and alcohol – which is why she will whole-heartedly embrace the welcome distraction offered by her work of mechanical reconstruction. As part of her attempt to understand the structure of the automaton, she feels that she must immerse herself in the diaries left behind by the commissioner of the work, an Englishman named Henry Brandling animated by his faith that the elaborate toy may release enough energy in his consumptive son, Percy, to save him from his otherwise lethal condition. Thus Carey creates an opening into the rationalist fabric of his protagonist’s present, allowing her to entertain anachronistic fantasies about the life-saving (let alone life-giving) properties of true art. Inasmuch as Catherine’s perusal of the diaries eventually facilitates a circuitous confrontation of her own grief, so that her excursions into the past serve to shore up her fragile sense of a future, the text appears to vindicate its own fantastic claims about the demiurgic, or at least redemptive, powers of art. Perhaps predictably, some reviewers balked in the face of this species of self-promotion, repeating the oft-expressed view that Carey’s fiction, in view of its deliberate straining of the laws of credibility, finally fails to emerge from an enmeshment in its own favoured themes of forgery and imitative inadequacy. The ultimate question asked by the work is then whether it must be seen to be equal to its own promise of transcendence. The present paper, by way of its own descent into the past (and particularly through a comparison with My Life as a Fake which rehearses similar themes), will try to provide an answer, notably by circumscribing the intention of a text in which metafiction assumes a metaphysical dimension possibly unique in Carey’s corpus. This chapter documents the design, management and effect of a project to promote “Scholarship of Teaching and Learning” (SoTL) among two groups of teachers at the University of Liège (Belgium). Through a combination of collective “moments” and individual tutoring, members of faculty have engaged, over the course of two years, in a process of reflection andaction targeting their feedback practices. By analyzing interviews conducted with participants, this chapter compares initial expectations built into the project by staff developers with how it actually unfolded, and how the members of faculty involved experienced it. This data outlines success factors, impediments and recommendations related to implementating this type of approach for combining individual and collective opportunities to develop aspects of SoTL. Adhesion is an important phenomenon in the context of MEMS for which the surface forces become dominant in comparison with the body forces. Because the magnitudes of the adhesive forces strongly depend on the surface interaction distances, which in turn evolve with the roughness of the contacting surfaces, the adhesive forces cannot be determined in a deterministic way. To quantify the uncertainties on the structural stiction behavior of a MEMS, this work proposes a “stochastic multi-scale methodology”. The key ingredient of the method is the evaluation of the random meso-scale apparent contact forces, which homogenize the effect of the nano-scale roughness and are integrated into a numerical model of the studied structure as a random contact law. To obtain the probabilistic behavior at the structural MEMS scale, a direct method needs to evaluate explicitly the meso-scale apparent contact forces in a concurrent way with the stochastic multi-scale approach. To reduce the computational cost, a stochastic model is constructed to generate the random meso-scale apparent contact forces. To this end, the apparent contact forces are parameterized by a vector of parameters before applying a polynomial chaos expansion in order to construct a mathematical model representing the probability of the random parameters vector. The problem of micro-beam stiction is then studied in a probabilistic way. [less ▲]

In this chapter, the catalytic applications of organometallic species - either pre-formed or generated in situ - based on Group 8 transition metals and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands are surveyed. Although the coordination chemistry of iron with NHCs was first explored in the 1970s, the use of NHC-Fe complexes in catalysis did not start until the new millennium and is still in its infancy. Significant developments reported thus far concern mainly polymerisation, cyclisation, coupling, or reduction reactions. Other important transformations mediated by NHC-Fe species have been reported in organometallic synthesis and biocatalysis. Contrastingly, the chemistry of NHC-Ru complexes has reached an unprecedented level of maturity, thanks to the relentless research efforts thrown into the development of olefin metathesis catalysts. Other carbon skeletal transformations based on NHC-Ru promoters include cyclopropanation, allylation, or cycloisomerisation reactions. Some of them were carried out in tandem with olefin metathesis. Lastly, with only a handful of reports to date concerning olefin metathesis and hydrogen transfer reactions, NHC-Os-based catalysis can hardly be considered anything else than a curiosity. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
