Trying to describe polytheism is a difficult enterprise because the whole system can be seen as a complex structure, each element of which (a deity with its proper name) is both itself a complex set of prerogatives, and at the same time, must be considered in concert with the other elements. After a brief historiographical overview, this paper focuses on the first aspect by using the notion of ‘network’ as a metaphor to refer to the complexity of the ancient Greek gods. It provides two case studies, of the Moirai and the goddess Hera. The paper concludes that polytheism can be described if one conceptualises the complexity of the gods—their unity and diversity—together at every level (Panhellenic and local, cult and myths, and so on). Climate effects on agriculture are of increasing concern in both the scientific and policy communities because of the growing population and the greater uncertainty in the weather during growing seasons. Changes in production are directly linked to variations in temperature and precipitation during the growing season and often to the offseason changes in weather because of soil water storage to replenish the soil profile. This is not an isolated problem but one of worldwide interest because each country has concerns about their food security. The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) was developed to evaluate agricultural models and intercompare their ability to predict climate impacts. In sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, South America and East Asia, AgMIP regional research teams (RRTs) are conducting integrated assessments to improve understanding of agricultural impacts of climate change (including biophysical and economic impacts) at national and regional scales. Other AgMIP initiatives include global gridded modeling, data and information technology (IT) tool development, simulation of crop pests and diseases, site-based crop-climate sensitivity studies, and aggregation and scaling. Over the last decade, China has deeply affected the economic map of Latin America. All the Latin American countries quickly increased their exchanges with China and get engaged in new plans for exchanges, cooperation and partnerships. These evolutions have highlighted the American lack of leadership and the European loss of competitiveness. Numbers of researches tend to analyse the Sino-Latin American relationship with the eyes of reciprocity. This contribution rather makes the choice of analysing China’s strategy for growth on the world stage, focusing on its ties with Latin America and Brazil especially: cooperation or hegemony? According to this approach, the increase of China’s influence doesn’t only depend on its resources, nor on its capacity to mobilize them opportunely. It also depends on its external recognition. Thus, the power of China can be measured through its capacity to “assert itself as a reference” for its emerging peers, or even for Western powers. By integrating all dimensions of the Chinese power through its foreign policy and its incantatory diplomacy (anti-hegemonism, world multipolarization, South-South cooperation, etc.) , this chapter will try to identify real Chinese influence by measuring the distance between perception and reality. Against the backdrop of the following hypothesis: does the Chinese penetration in Latin America have a notable impact on the relations of Europe and the United States with this part of the world?

Since a decade, the accelerometry allows new measurements in biomechanics of sport. Small, light and transportable, these sensors allow to liberate from heavy force plates and offers new perspectives in the understanding of the performance in sport. The goal of this chapter is to present the concept of the accelerometry and to understand practical possibilities and limits in the assessment of muscular performance. The reliability of the accelerometers are highly depending on the level of technology and in the respect of manufacturer recommendations. These devices are used during exercises such as bench press or squat, allowing to analyze force-velocity-power profile, to estimate the 1-RM, to achieve biomechanical analysis or to track free weight exercises during work out. All of these applications are very precious for scientists and for coaches during training program or athletes follow-up. [less ▲]

The roles of mast cells in health and disease remain incompletely understood. While the evidence that mast cells are critical effector cells in IgE-dependent anaphylaxis and other acute IgE-mediated allergic reactions seems unassailable, studies employing various mice deficient in mast cells or mast cell-associated proteases have yielded divergent conclusions about the roles of mast cells or their proteases in certain other immunological responses. Such “controversial” results call into question the relative utility of various older versus newer approaches to ascertain the roles of mast cells and mast cell proteases in vivo. This review discusses how both older and more recent mouse models have been used to investigate the functions of mast cells and their proteases in health and disease. We particularly focus on settings in which divergent conclusions about the importance of mast cells and their proteases have been supported by studies that employed different models of mast cell or mast cell protease deficiency. We think that two major conclusions can be drawn from such findings: (1) no matter which models of mast cell or mast cell protease deficiency one employs, the conclusions drawn from the experiments always should take into account the potential limitations of the models (particularly abnormalities affecting cell types other than mast cells) and (2) even when analyzing a biological response using a single model of mast cell or mast cell protease deficiency, details of experimental design are critical in efforts to define those conditions under which important contributions of mast cells or their proteases can be identified. Delinquent and criminal behaviors are often the result of adverse conditions in the family and the neighborhood, or of affiliations with delinquent peers. However, case studies as well as large surveys have shown that even in adverse conditions, many children and adolescents do not engage in delinquency; they are “resilient.” In the explanation of criminal and antisocial behaviors, resilient individuals are those who have succeeded in overcoming at-risk circumstances. Resilience is also regarded as the process through which a person adjusts to at-risk situations in a successful manner. Promotive and protective factors stem from the community, family, school, peers, and individuals, and the configurations of these factors are important. In addition, protective factors are not universal. Risk factors and consequently, protective and resilience processes, may be different for children, adolescents, and adults, as well as for males and females. Finally, it is useful to distinguish primary resilience (i.e., as a preventive force in the onset of delinquency) from secondary resilience, which refers to a return to a crime-free life after a period of serious offending activity. The process of regionalisation in Western Europe has renewed the interest in political careers, not only for newly regionalised unitary states but also for established federations (Stolz 2003). Recently, Docherty (2011: 186) rightly stated that “there has been little analytical work on the Canadian political career ” . And, arguably, even less on political careers in Quebec. Though, since the end of the 1990s, Walloon political careers have received greater attention (Fiers 2001a, 2001b; Pilet, Fiers and Steyvers 2007; Vanlangenakker, Maddens and Put 2010). Based on an original dataset, this chapter proposes a comprehensive analyses of federal and regional careers since the 1990s in Quebec and in Wallonia. More specifically, it presents and explains the circulation of members of parliament (MPs) in the two federations, with a specific focus on career maintenance at a single level of government (professional political careers) and career advancement (level-hopping movements between political arenas). Nudge and the Law explores the legal implications of the emergent phenomenon of behaviourally informed intervention. It focuses on the challenges and opportunities it may offer to the policymaking of the European Union. This dual focus on law and on Europe characterises our endeavour. This volume has been structured by taking as a point of the departure the current nudging debate, which mainly comprises two strands of enquiry: when is it legitimate for States to use psychology to inform policy? (the legitimacy debate) and, to the extent that it is legitimate, how can behavioural insights in practice be incorporated into the decision making processes? (the practicability debate). Against this backdrop we brought together scholars who could analyse what behavioural insights might bring to EU law, both at a horizontal level and at a sectoral level. This volume endeavours to present the results of their research in a manner that is accessible both to EU law specialists who are not yet familiar with behavioural sciences and to behavioural lawyers who are not specialists in EU law. Until recently, Kavet ethnic minority people traditionally practiced swidden agriculture and accessed natural resources in the uplands as an important, and unchallenged, part of their food system. This present study aims to trace the historical transformation of land use and tenure practices by Kavet communities in Kok Lak commune in the context of various state-driven and social-economic transformations. At commune level, we look at land use changes along with the migrations associated with these transformations. We also aim to understand how these changes have induced social differentiation between households as it relates to their entitlements, their production activities and their income structure. We examine the transformation in land use prompted by a multiplicity of drivers (demographic, economic, political, institutional and cultural) and in land tenure regimes through a land control matrix that differentiates between two types of rights (the land rights of the users and the rights to manage those rights given to the users). We discovered that the Kavet people have been resilient in protecting and promoting the core of their swidden territories and traditions; however, recent developments (including the establishment of the Virachey National Park (VNP) and market incentives) have considerably fragmented their land uses, cultural values and institutions. Through forced and free migration, some households have adopted new forms of agriculture (e.g. paddy, and annual and perennial non-rice crops) and converted their swidden land into cashew plantations, while others still rely solely on the practice of swidden agriculture as a lifestyle. By reviewing past transformations, by identifying the role swidden agriculture has had and the contribution it has made to the lives of the Kavet people, we recommend that efforts be made to conserve it in recognition of the pivotal role it plays in community development and to adopt better land use planning at local level. But proper consideration should also be given to the Kavet people who do not practice swidden agriculture. [less ▲]

There is a long history of brain stimulation in medical science, and it was tested for years to try to treat several neurological diseases. Research has long been focused on some cortical areas and deep brain structures like the prefrontal cortex and the thalamus. On the other hand, the treatment choices for patients with severe brain injury resulting in disorders of consciousness are still limited and research in this field remains challenging. In the current literature, only a few techniques of brain stimulation were studied scientifically in this population of patients. We will here describe noninvasive techniques, namely transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation, which permit to stimulate the brain through the scalp. Next, we will discuss the current status of deep brain stimulation as treatment for patients with disorders of consciousness. Finally we will develop hypothesis to explain the mechanism of action of these means of brain stimulation. We will see that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation studies showed encouraging results, with improvements in the behavioral signs of consciousness of severely brain injured patients, both chronic and acute, traumatic or non-traumatic, without influence of the stimulation side. Deep brain stimulation showed more impressive and extensive behavioral improvement after the implantation of an electrical stimulator in the intralaminar nuclei. However, this procedure is riskier and the number of patients who can benefit from this intervention are still limited. These therapeutic approaches are still in their infancy. In the years to follow, interventions should multiply and therapeutic measures should be more accessible, controlled and effective. [less ▲]

This chapter suggests that the notion of ‘social enterprise’ is useful to capture the DNA of organizations focused on fair trade and to locate them within a broader organizational taxonomy. Without seeking to impose a new term that may not resonate for certain actors or regions, this chapter aims to bring two contributions to fair trade research and practice. First, it is suggested that the social enterprise approach is particularly useful as an analytical tool enabling researchers and other stakeholders to capture the evolution and diversification of organizational models in fair trade. Second, the use of a broader organizational approach that is not specific to the sole fair trade sector allows for connections with similar organizations in other sectors and brings a shift from considering mainly what the organizations do (fair trade in this case) towards also addressing what they are (innovative social enterprise models combining market dynamics with social purpose). This chapter is structured as follows. First, the concept of social enterprise is introduced and discussed. Then, the evolution of the organizational landscape of fair trade (in the North) is summarized. Finally, fair trade organizations are examined in the light of the social enterprise concept, with illustrations from a study in four European countries (Huybrechts 2010a; 2012). [less ▲]

In this chapter, we review the behavioural critique of EU consumer legislation and focus is on how behavioural insights are being incorporated or could realistically be incorporated in existing or new rules. Behavioural scholars sometimes present EU consumer law as archaic and counter-productive and this creates a diffuse view that a behavioural turn would constitute a revolution for EU consumer law. We do not subscribe to this view. We begin by putting the current legitimacy crisis of EU consumer law in perspective. Specifically, we explain why EU law evolved to be an apparent anti-model of behavioural regulation and discuss whether the internal market constraints that still exist prevent a behavioural turn. We conclude that they do not. We illustrate this claim in relation to disclosure mandates. The central feature of disclosure mandates in EU consumer law has been severely criticised in the light of behavioural findings. We agree that they are over-used but find that disclosure mandates, as a technique, can still serve a useful purpose and suggest how their use can be streamlined. We also point out that recent developments tend to make disclosures smarter and point to directions to pursue this evolution. Finally, we turn to the core message of behavioural insights to policy makers: ‘make it simple’ and analyse how it has been received in EU consumer law beyond the specific issue of disclosure. We find evidence of an intention to simplify which predates the current commitment of the Commission to make simplification a priority, but highlight that efforts to simplify have led to half-baked solutions that are not simple enough. We conclude that EU consumer law does not need a revolution but a continued reform and that it contains the seeds of a more behavioural approach. [less ▲]

Traduction française du célèbre chapitre de Peter Carruthers, "HOP over FOR, HOT Theory". [less ▲]

The Council of Europe and the European Union (hereinafter: the EU) are major players and partners in the domain of policy shaping strategies on the European continent, with significant and evergrowing impact on international community as a whole. Although the ratio and ideas behind their establishment were not the same (economic versus humanistic), they have, over the time, acquired a similar attitude towards a number of legal issues, including protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Unlike the Council of Europe which perceived human rights as a cornerstone of its founding pillars, the EU took a longer way to incorporate them in its priority areas. The latter shift was, however, rapid and these days, one is witnessing a large-scale cooperation instituted between respective regional organisations with the aim of creating a human rights friendly environment. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on one particular segment of their cooperation in the field of human rights protection – asylum law. For the fact that Europe attracts a large contingency of people looking for better life and new beginnings, asylum matters have moved to the forefront of the Council of Europe and EU standard setting policies. The chapter following the introductory remarks gives an overview of the most crucial moments in the chronology of cooperation between the Council of Europe and the EU, observed from the angle of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (hereinafter: the European Convention) and the related case-law of the two core European judicial organs: the European Court of Human Rights (hereinafter: the ECHR) and the Court of Justice of the European Union (hereinafter: the CJEU). A special emphasis is put on recent developments of historical significance related to the accession of the EU to the European Convention and peculiar legal consequences thereof. Chapter 3 focuses on the so-called Dublin system, a set of norms and mechanisms introduced to regulate a vast area of the asylum policy within the EU. The analysis keeps track with the steps taken in the creation of a common European asylum system, i.e. the three codification stages and their outcomes. Despite being of EU provenance, the respective system serves as a solid legal basis in asylum matters adjudicated by both European courts. Finally, the chapter preceding the conclusion highlights some of the leading asylum cases which demonstrate a close interrelation and interdependance of the European courts and their case-law in the area of European asylum policies. The sub-chapter on the ECHR case-law summarises the most notable facts, elements and standards derived from the judgments in the cases of M. S. S. v. Belgium and Greece, T. I. v. the United Kingdom and K. R. S. v. the United Kingdom, as well as Mohammed Hussein and Others v. the Netherlands and Italy, and Mohammed v. Austria. In the same vein, the CJEU case-law is elaborated in another sub-chapter; namely, the authors draw attention to the cases of N. S. v. Secretary of State for the Home Department and M. E. and others v. Refugee Applications Commissioner, Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform; Meki Elgafaji, Noor Elgafaji v. Staatssecretaris van Justitie; and Shamso Abdullahi v. Bundesasylamt. The purpose of this case-law overview and analysis is to sum up major rules, theories and standards originating from the judgements, as well as to find the points of convergence and differentiation between the ECHR and the CJEU in asylum matters.

[less ▲]

by focusing on the concept of world propsed by Boltanski and his pragmatic perspective which in previous work has enabled me to cast a critical eye on new social resistance movements. For Boltanski, what matters is the potential for emancipation to be found in the everyday practices of social actors, directly engaged in the world. He assigns to the sociologist the role of discerning what practices have emancipatory potential because they resist dominant discourses, alter institutional, legitimate accounts of reality which can perhaps lead to social change. There is however a temptation in Boltanski’s work to return to an idealist perspective which shoehorns the emancipatory potential of the everyday practices of social actors into a conceptual and thus intellectual framework: le registre métacritique (ou métapragmatique) auquel seul le sociologue peut avoir accès. Ce registre est unable to give us new perspectives on what might concretely constitute emancipation. In other words, the danger is that even Boltanski’s work will not achieve critical renewal. Therefore I will propose a way out of this impasse by refusing to evaluate emancipation against the test of a (re)turn to an ideal state (whether transcendental or transcendent), but instead embedded in the lived material existence of social actors. Because we cannot be certain where these actions will lead, as sociologists we must accept uncertainty and contingency comme nous l’enseigne Bruno Latour, cet autre auteur français qui se réclame également aujourd’hui du pragmatisme. Or scruter l’emancipation potentielle que recellent ces pratiques est nécessaire si l’on veut évaluer which, amongst them, have the potential to yield social transformation. In sum, in what follows [less ▲]

Over the past several years, Cambodia’s coastal resources system has undergone considerable transformation. The causes have included uncontrolled fishing activities, tourism development, salt and shrimp farming, sand mining, and trade, to name just the most significant. Against this background, this study analyzes pathways of change over the past 15 years in coastal resource systems in two neighboring communities in the Kampong Trach district of Kampot province. The analysis proceeds on two different levels. We first look at change in respect of the cross-scale multiple drivers in the resource system at village level and its effects on the social and ecological components of the marine, intertidal and agricultural areas of the coastal zone. Then, at household level, we examine the diversity of adaptation measures adopted to deal with these changes, and evaluate their impacts on livelihoods. We argue that the degradation of fisheries resources in marine and intertidal zones results from drivers that originate outside and inside the communities, but mostly stems from problems of governance. Despite tangible improvements in rain-fed rice yield, the development of the farming sector is constrained by limited capacity to diversify and intensify production. The adaptation paths to this resources degradation squeeze are multiple. The few households who can afford to enhance or intensify their farming and fishing efforts usually manage to improve their food security status. But in a majority of cases, the adaptation works through a move away from the land and the sea, either through self-employed non-farm and non-fishing activities (local business associated with cross-border trade with Vietnam) or through wage labor. Self-employed activities and demand more capital but represent the main path of improvement in these communities. Wage labor - particularly associated with migration - has become widespread but its potential to improve food security is very limited. Accessing credit and going into debt is another significant way in which people have attempted to adapt either to address chronic food insecurity or to maintain the same level of productivity. The increase of mobility is a central element in adaptation strategy adopted by many who have been affected. This includes: mobility of labor (non-farm, wage and migration); the mobility of capital (e.g. conversion from marine zone fishing to trade); and mobility of landownership (occurring through market-based land concentration). However, we suggest that these processes of adaptation have actually reinforced the wealth disparity that exists between households. It has particularly exacerbated the vulnerability of those who are most dependent on small-scale fisheries. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Political parties are key political actors in both Quebec and Wallonia. As their foremost ambition is to govern their region, these parties clearly contribute to shaping its identity and image. This chapter aims at exploring how political parties in Quebec and in Wallonia speak about their region by focusing on an analysis of their electoral manifestos for the period 1994–2014. Using a quantitative and qualitative approach combining insights from lexicometry, cognitive linguistics and political science, the aims of this contribution are (i) to unravel how the parties perceive their region and its future development, (ii) to identify relevant evolutions in their perception of their respective region, and (iii) to assess to what extent parallels can be drawn between the two regions.
