Devonian and Carboniferous deposits are found in many places around the world. The record of climate change preserved in them is the best (and only) resource of information on the Earth`s climate system then, at a time, when current and future climatic change is one of society`s greatest challenges. This book introduces some of the key areas of Mid-Palaeozoic sediment occurrence worldwide, authored by 114 specialists from more than 30 countries. The areas were studied as part of the UNESCO/IUGS project on climate change and biodiversity patterns in the mid-Palaeozoic (Devonian and Carboniferous). This large-scale taxonomic, stratigraphic and palaeoecological study of mid-Paleozoic floras and faunas has resulted in 86 contributions and more than 25 artistic reconstructions characterizing the biosphere of the Devonian and Carboniferous. Each contribution describes (in English and the respective national language) the scope of the IGCP project in the respective country, exemplified by representative Devonian/Carboniferous age geological sections and/or regions there. The authors intend to enhance the visibility and the perception of relevance of research on mid-Palaeozoic deposits beyond the Earth Science community. [less ▲]

This work presents a mixed penalty-duality formulation from an augmented Lagrangian approach for treating the contact inequality constraints. The augmented Lagrangian approach allows to regularize the non differentiable contact terms and gives a C1 differentiable saddle-point functional. The relative displacement of two contacting bodies is described in the framework of the Finite Element Method (FEM) using the mortar method, which gives a smooth representation of the contact forces across the bodies interface. To study the robustness and performance of the proposed algorithm, validation numerical examples with finite deformations and large slip motion are presented. [less ▲]

Abstract The aim of this article is to review some common opinions on changes in pubertal timing and shed new light both on the indicators used in assessing pubertal timing and the underlying mechanisms. While emphasis is usually on advancement in timing of female puberty, it appears that timing also changes in males, both towards earliness for the initial pubertal stages and towards lateness for the final stages. Such findings suggest that the environmental influences on pubertal timing are more complex than initially thought. Moreover, self-evaluated pubertal timing versus peers provides information that is not always consistent with observations at physical examination, suggesting that both perspectives should be considered, especially when studying the correlation between pubertal timing and psychosocial aspects. The mechanisms of changes in pubertal timing may involve both central neuroendocrine control and peripheral effects in tissues targeted by gonadal steroids. Though energy availability is certainly a clue to the mechanism of pubertal development, changes in the control of both energy balance and control of reproduction may vary under the influence of common determinants such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals. These effects can take place right before puberty as well as much earlier, during fetal and neonatal life. Finally, environmental factors can interact with genetic factors in determining changes in pubertal timing. Therefore, the variance in pubertal timing is no longer to be considered under the absolutely separate control of environmental and genetic determinants.  [less ▲]

Agricultural development models are the focus of intense debate in the Cambodian policy-making arenas. A model inspired by the ‘Green Revolution’, which promotes industrialization of rice cropping systems and is mainly dependent on external inputs, is usually contrasted with multi-purpose farming (MPF) in which rice cropping is integrated with other production to maximize their interactions and complementarities. The purpose of this research is to present some economic arguments based on the experience in promoting MPF of CEDAC (Centre d’Etude et de Dévelopement Agricole Cambodgien, also known as the Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture). We develop a comparative analysis between conventional rice cropping systems and MPF to analyze the production economics and the overall patterns of household labor diversification. Focusing primarily on rainy-season rice production, we attribute significant advantage to MPF against non-MPF practices. These differences are perceptible in higher rice yield, lower cash-paid costs, and higher value-added per hectare. However, these differences become less significant when multi-purpose farming is only partially implemented, i.e. if some elements of the system are missing. MPF provides employment opportunities that represent a reliable alternative to job migration. Under MPF, family labor is used more on-farm than is the case with non- MPF farms and is more homogenously distributed throughout the year. However, we identify barriers that curb the scaling-up of this innovation, which include limited access to information, anticipated lack of labor, lack of capacity or technical skills, lack of up-front capital to make the initial investment in land conversion to MPF, and land plot sizes that are too small to be converted to this model. We also discuss the opportunities to create markets for products of differentiated quality produced under multi-purpose farming. [less ▲]

The diagnosis and medical management of patients with acute or chronic disorders of consciousness (DOC) are challenging. Motor-independent functional neuroimaging technologies are increasingly employed to study covert cognitive processes in the absence of behavioural reports. Studies with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) performed in this patient population have utilized active, passive and restingstate paradigms. Active paradigms refer to mental imagery tasks that measure wilful modulation of brain signal in specific brain areas, aiming to detect command-following. Passive paradigms are used to measure brain responses to external sensory stimulation (e.g. auditory, somatosensory and visual). Alternatively, in resting-state paradigms, spontaneous brain function is assessed while subjects receive no external stimulation and are instructed to let their mind wander. Independently from each other, these methods have shown differences between healthy controls and patients, as well as among patients with DOC. However, these techniques cannot yet be used in clinical settings before robust information at the single-subject level will be provided: it is expected that multimodal research will improve the single-patient diagnosis, shed light on the prognostic biomarkers, and eventually promote the medical management of patients with consciousness alterations. Against the background of narratives fuelling big promises on the disruptive potential of 3D printing, this chapter seeks to describe a variety of contexts in which 3D printing technologies are expected to emerge over the next 15 years and exert their so-called disruptive potential. In the section 2, we first provide a brief introduction to 3D printing and we explain how it actually works. Next, in section 3, we describe the paradigmatic change allowed by 3D printing in the industrial sector with a shift toward mass-customization. In particular, we focus on the biomedical sector (section 3.1.), which is an interesting case in point because of the important number of innovations and the growth of 3D printed biomedical parts, a trend which is expected to continue in the future. To account for the dramatic, transversal, and transformative potential that 3D printing has in that whole sector, we first concentrate on 3D printing of biomedical instruments and implants for patients (section 3.1.1.) and, second, on additive bio- manufacturing of human tissues and organs (section 3.1.2.). Then, in the subsequent section 4 we address the expectations raised by 3D printing to empowering users in non-industrial domains (e.g. in fabrication laboratories or with desktop 3D printers at home). In section 5, we turn to discussing the impact of 3D printing on the governance actors and we raise important issues for further research in the political economy of 3D printing technologies. The chapter posits that 3D printing, and its governance, are closely associated with more participatory means of manufacturing (and of decision- making, through various governance structures) – but that, as things currently stand, such openness and participation does not play out in practice. There is a distinction between the rhetoric and reality of 3D printing, as one might expect in the case of newly emerging technologies. [less ▲]

In the academic debate about the southern Nigerian video industry (Nollywood), the role of women has generally been underestimated. Articles that focus on the connection between women and the video industry tend to analyse the discourse about gender that videos produce and circulate and see the videos as propagator of sexist and patriarchal stereotypes about women and their place in society. Some analysts have nuanced these criticisms by showing the variety and complexity of the gender discourse that videos circulate, and by emphasizing that the video stories make new forms of female social mobility visible. However, almost no attention has been given to the analysis of how the industry, as a form of business, has opened new spaces for women’s economic and social mobility. In this chapter I make an attempt at addressing this gap by focusing on the experience of a number of women who have successfully established themselves as entrepreneurs in the southern Nigerian video industry. Thanks to their specific business strategies, they have created new spaces for female economic and social mobility in this sector, and have gained pronounced social visibility, thus contributing to the construction of the collective imagination of women’s social and economic success. L’alcool remonte le moral. Une petite cuite n’a jamais tué personne. [less ▲]

Synthetic biology, which is a new emerging technology aiming at re-writing existing biological systems and designing completely new parts and devices, brings several potential benefits, but at the same time it constitutes a new threat to biosecurity: for such “double Janus face”, it can be considered as a “dual use research”. Indeed, the risk that its theoretical discoveries and applications are handled by bioterrorists and used for malevolent purposes is not a mere hypothesis. Therefore, it is necessary to look for possible solutions for the governance of this type of risk. In order to try to achieve such purpose, the analysis focuses, first of all, on the overview of the existing regulations against bioterrorism. Then, these regulations are evaluated in the light of the constitutional frame of fundamental rights at stake (in the belief that any policy/regulation should take into account and be based on the respect of fundamental rights). Thirdly, the applicability of the existing regulatory framework to synthetic biology is checked. Fourthly, the different positions that have been proposed so far for addressing biosecurity risks in the area of synthetic biology are shown and put into comparison. Finally, the proposal of a model of governance, called of “prudent vigilance”, is described. [less ▲]

In this contribution, I frame the expanding EU case law on citizenship as a special enunciation of the free movement of workers. In doing so, I present a more limited narrative of citizenship than the one more and more frequently associated with it. In doing so, I show that EU citizenship's potential for enabling more social integration in the European Union remains, rather unexpectedly, limited. [less ▲]

DNA oligomers are promising building blocks for the development of bottom-up nano-devices and molecular logic machines. To control and exploit their unique capabilities of self-assembling and molecular recognition a deep understanding of their dynamical properties is essential. We theoretically investigate the dynamics of a DNA dodecamer and its complexes with two common ligands, Hoechst33258 and the ethidium cation, by means of classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We study the structural relation between the flexibility of the double helix and the binding process. The dynamics of a terminal base pair unbinding is also analysed as an example of process that involves multiple energy minima in the underlying free energy landscape. [less ▲]
