by focusing on the concept of world propsed by Boltanski and his pragmatic perspective which in previous work has enabled me to cast a critical eye on new social resistance movements. For Boltanski, what matters is the potential for emancipation to be found in the everyday practices of social actors, directly engaged in the world. He assigns to the sociologist the role of discerning what practices have emancipatory potential because they resist dominant discourses, alter institutional, legitimate accounts of reality which can perhaps lead to social change. There is however a temptation in Boltanski’s work to return to an idealist perspective which shoehorns the emancipatory potential of the everyday practices of social actors into a conceptual and thus intellectual framework: le registre métacritique (ou métapragmatique) auquel seul le sociologue peut avoir accès. Ce registre est unable to give us new perspectives on what might concretely constitute emancipation. In other words, the danger is that even Boltanski’s work will not achieve critical renewal. Therefore I will propose a way out of this impasse by refusing to evaluate emancipation against the test of a (re)turn to an ideal state (whether transcendental or transcendent), but instead embedded in the lived material existence of social actors. Because we cannot be certain where these actions will lead, as sociologists we must accept uncertainty and contingency comme nous l’enseigne Bruno Latour, cet autre auteur français qui se réclame également aujourd’hui du pragmatisme. Or scruter l’emancipation potentielle que recellent ces pratiques est nécessaire si l’on veut évaluer which, amongst them, have the potential to yield social transformation. In sum, in what follows [less ▲]

Against the background of narratives fuelling big promises on the disruptive potential of 3D printing, this chapter seeks to describe a variety of contexts in which 3D printing technologies are expected to emerge over the next 15 years and exert their so-called disruptive potential. In the section 2, we first provide a brief introduction to 3D printing and we explain how it actually works. Next, in section 3, we describe the paradigmatic change allowed by 3D printing in the industrial sector with a shift toward mass-customization. In particular, we focus on the biomedical sector (section 3.1.), which is an interesting case in point because of the important number of innovations and the growth of 3D printed biomedical parts, a trend which is expected to continue in the future. To account for the dramatic, transversal, and transformative potential that 3D printing has in that whole sector, we first concentrate on 3D printing of biomedical instruments and implants for patients (section 3.1.1.) and, second, on additive bio- manufacturing of human tissues and organs (section 3.1.2.). Then, in the subsequent section 4 we address the expectations raised by 3D printing to empowering users in non-industrial domains (e.g. in fabrication laboratories or with desktop 3D printers at home). In section 5, we turn to discussing the impact of 3D printing on the governance actors and we raise important issues for further research in the political economy of 3D printing technologies. The chapter posits that 3D printing, and its governance, are closely associated with more participatory means of manufacturing (and of decision- making, through various governance structures) – but that, as things currently stand, such openness and participation does not play out in practice. There is a distinction between the rhetoric and reality of 3D printing, as one might expect in the case of newly emerging technologies. [less ▲]

This chapter will analyze the place of the threat alleged of Cultural Marxism in the discourse of the radical and extreme right, in the United States as well as in continental Europe and the United Kingdom. The underlying aim of this chapter is to examine the determinant role that this ‘threat’ plays in the Anglo Saxon extreme right, in particular at the intellectual, ideological and doctrinal levels, in comparison to other countries. Certainly if the Netherlands, France or other countries have parties or political groups which borrow the rhetoric of ‘fighting’ against Cultural Marxism, or its more nebulous variant, ‘political correctness’, it certainly finds its origins in the United States, and more broadly the Anglo-Saxon world. To achieve this, the chapter will begin by unpicking the meanings behind the notion of Cultural Marxism, from its origins to its use in Anders Breivik’s manifesto released shortly before the Oslo and UtØya massacres. It will show that the term emerged from the literature of American ultraconservatives following the fall of the Berlin Wall as a consequence of the disappearance of the ‘red menace’ of Communism. Secondly, it will focus on two important moments in the development of the term. It will describe the phrase’s usage from the beginning of the 2000s within the discourse of Pat Buchanan, a political commentator and multiple U.S. presidential candidate. Then it will illustrate the re-emergence of the term some 10 years later, in the manifesto of Anders Breivik and in the subsequent justification of his acts throughout his trial. In both cases, we will see that Buchanan and Breivik emphasize the same basic theme, Cultural Marxism, in their denouncement of what they see as two different threats. Finally, from these explorations of the usage of the term, the discussion will examine other current uses of the notion of ‘Cultural Marxism’ in the British and American radical right. To conclude, it will show how the ‘Cultural Marxism’ threats are used by a variety of activists to argue for the defence of their political standpoints, setting this in a language of preserving freedom and democracy, but ultimately only within a framework designed to defend Judeo-Christian values. The accessibility and the location of new and existing urban projects are key factors for the sustainability of our built environments. Previous scientific research have shown that both the location of neighborhoods (that is to say their proximity to work places, schools facilities, services etc.) as well as their accessibility (proximity of infrastructures, bus services, etc.) have a huge impact on modal share (especially the ability to use active commuting for daily travel), travelled distances and thus on emissions of greenhouse gas and health of inhabitants. In a view of sustainability, the location of new and planned urban projects should be carefully assessed in order to favor the development of local communities encouraging the use of public transportation and active commuting (foot, bicycle). Local authorities should also be able to assess the potentialities of different Brownfield and Greenfields on their territories and define where to authorize the development of new urban projects, in order to inscribe them in a concrete vision of sustainability. In the first part of the chapter, we propose a synthetic review of the scientific literature dealing with the relationships between location, accessibility and commuting. Then, we analyze how location and accessibility are taken into account in several existing neighborhood sustainability assessment tools. Based on the ascertainments that sustainable mobility, location and accessibility criteria are given less importance than criteria related to building energy performance or green spaces and, that existing sustainability assessment tools are mainly developed for experts, we propose two frameworks to assess the location and the accessibility of buildings and neighborhoods. These two frameworks are especially designed for a non-expert audience (citizens, local authorities, developers, etc.), within the Walloon (Belgian) context. To conclude the chapter, the reproducibility of our work is discussed and our main findings are summarized. [less ▲]

This paper looks at migration and the politics of representation in contemporary Italian cinema by comparing one of the Nigerian videos recently produced in Italy, Akpegi Boys (2009), directed by Vincent Omoigui and Simone Sandretti, with two recent Italian films which portray the experience of Nigerian migrants in Italy, Marco and Antonio Manetti’s Torino Boys (1997), and Enrico Verra’s Sotto il Sole Nero (2004). Interestingly enough both films take, implicitly and explicitly, Nigerian videos as a narrative and aesthetic reference in order to build an innovative representation of Nigerian migrants in Italy, thus positioning themselves in an original position vis-à-vis the growing corpus of Italian films about migration emerged over the past two decades. As this paper argues, these three films allow us to identify the emergence of what could be defined as an “anti-humanitarian” representation of migration. By defining their attitude as anti-humanitarian, I do not intend to mean that these films assume a negative or derogatory perspective on migration. On the contrary, what I intend to highlight is that these are films that, by using a number of specific narrative and aesthetic strategies such as, among others, the reference to Nollywood commercial and exploitation filmmaking style, make an attempt to go beyond the binary representation that much debate on migration in Italy implicitly embraces, a representation according to which the migrant is either seen as an invader or as a victim. By playing with cultural references that belong to the contemporary cultural universe of Nigerian migrants themselves, these films suggest the possibility of building a bridge between the diverging ways in which Italians and (in this case Nigerian) migrants look at migration. This encounter has the potential of helping Italian directors and intellectuals in deconstructing their hegemonic gaze on migrants and migration phenomena, and has the possibility to inaugurate an healthy as much as needed process of decentralization and provincialization of singularly “Italian” perspectives on migration in Italy. The European COST Action FP1201 FOREST LAND OWNERSHIP CHANGES IN EUROPE: SIGNIFICANCE FOR MANAGEMENT AND POLICY (FACESMAP) aims to bring together the state-of-knowledge in this field across Europe and can build on expertise from 30 participating countries. Drawing on an evidence review across these countries, the objectives of the Action are as follows: (1) To analyse attitudes and constraints of different forest owner types in Europe and the on-going changes (outputs: literature survey, meta-analyses and maps). (2) To explore innovative management approaches for new forest owner types (outputs: case studies, critical assessment). (3) To study effective policy instruments with a comparative analysis approach (outputs: lit-erature survey, case studies, policy analyses). (4) To draw conclusions and recommendations for forest-related policies, forest management practice, further education and future research. Part of the work of the COST Action is the collection of data into country reports. These are writ-ten following prepared guidelines and to a common structure in order to allow comparisons across the countries. They also stand by themselves, giving a comprehensive account on the state of knowledge on forest ownership changes in each country. The common work in all countries comprises of a collection of quantitative data as well as quali-tative description of relevant issues. The COUNTRY REPORTS of the COST Action serve the following purposes: • Give an overview of forest ownership structures and respective changes in each country and insight on specific issues in the countries; • Provide data for some of the central outputs that are planned in the Action, including the literature reviews; • Provide information for further work in the Action, including sub-groups on specific topics. A specific focus of the COST Action is on new forest owner types. It is not so much about “new forest owners” in the sense of owners who have only recently acquired their forest, but the in-terest is rather on new types of ownership – owners with non-traditional goals of ownership and methods of management. For the purpose of the Action, a broad definition of “new forest owner types” was chosen. In a broad understanding of new or non-traditional forest ownership we in-clude several characteristics as possible determinants of new forest owners. The following groups may all be determined to be new forest owners: (1) individuals or organizations that previously have not owned forest land, (2) traditional forest owner categories who have changed motives, or introduced new goals and/or management practices for their forests, (3) transformed public ownership categories (e.g., through privatisation, contracting out forest management, transfer to municipalities, etc.), and (4) new legal forms of ownership in the countries (e.g. new common property regimes, com-munity ownership), both for private and state land. PhaseChange Materials should be stable enough in their amorphous phase to achieve a durable data retention, however they should also be bad glass formers to be able to recrystallise at high speed. To understand these contradicting properties, we construct models of amorphous Ge–Sb–Te systems using Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and analyse the structures in relationwith the relevant crystalline state. We show that structural patterns that are precursors of the crystalline phase exist in the amorphous state and we identify the signature of the various types of local atomic orders in the X-ray absorption spectra that we compute using Density Functional Theory. We first analyse the mechanical properties of the amorphous phase in the framework of the Maxwell rigidity theory, showing that all efficient Phase Change Materials deviate from the perfect glass and are mechanically stressed-rigid. Additionally, we show that the stability of Phase Change Materials is related to the density of lowfrequency vibrational modes (Boson peak). We describe howan adequate doping can result in an increased stability of the amorphous phase while keeping intact the phase change ability of the material. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015. The Council of Europe and the European Union are major players and partners in the domain of policy-shaping strategies on the European continent, with significant and ever-growing impact on international community as a whole. Although the ratio and ideas behind their establishment were not the same (economic versus humanistic), they have, over the time, acquired a similar attitude towards a number of legal issues, including protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Unlike the Council of Europe, which perceived human rights as a cornerstone of its founding pillars, the EU took a longer way to incorporate them in its priority areas. The latter shift was, however, rapid, and these days one is witnessing a large-scale cooperation instituted between respective regional organisations with the aim of creating a human-rights-friendly environment. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on one particular segment of their cooperation in the field of human rights protection—asylum law. For the fact that Europe attracts a large contingency of people looking for better life and new beginnings, asylum matters have moved swiftly to the forefront of the Council of Europe and EU standard-setting policies. Nevertheless, the existence of two parallel legal regimes has not led to an inconsistent asylum policy. In order to illustrate the Council of Europe and EU distinctive approaches to asylum, as well as their manifold interplay in the respective arena, the paper summarises the most notable pieces of their legal and regulatory framework and offers an insight into some of the leading asylum cases brought before the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union.

[less ▲]

The majority of children in Burkina Faso undertake work and, compared to other West African countries, it has the highest rate of children involved in hazardous work (Diallo 2008; NISD 2008), which is one working child out of two. Based on a qualitative survey, this chapter presents the perspectives of Burkinabe children working in two of the hazardous sectors: a quarry and an artisanal mine. The findings show that children acknowledge very difficult working conditions in these sites. However a variety of reasons maintain them in work, which they perceive as a solution and thus challenging action against child labour in Burkina Faso. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

An Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is similar to a steam Rankine cycle, except that the working fluid is not water but an organic compound, such as a refrigerant or a hydrocarbon, characterized by a lower ebullition temperature than that of water. Hence lower temperature heat sources can be exploited such as solar energy, geothermal energy and waste heat recovery from many different processes. During the design phase of an ORC system, the selection of the working fluid must be conducted in parallel with the selection and the sizing of the components (mainly the expansion machine, the pump and the heat exchangers) and with the definition of the cycle architecture. This approach allows taking into consideration all technical constraints. Relevant properties of working fluids that should be considered during their selection are listed. Major characteristics of available displacement and turbo-expander technologies are described. The impact of the pump performance on the overall performance is discussed and strategies to increase the available NPSH are proposed. Finally, improved cycle architectures are introduced. Major applications of ORC systems are described: geothermal power plants, biomass CHP plants, waste heat recovery in industry, waste heat recovery on internal combustion engines and solar power plants. All these applications differ by the nature of the heat source and heat sink, the integration of the ORC with these sources and sinks, and the range of installed capacities. These differences yield specific designs, which are described. Performance achieved by systems in operation or prototypes are presented. [less ▲]

Patients with disordered consciousness due to brain injury pose medical and ethical challenges. Rates of clinical misdiagnosis of “vegetative”/unresponsive, minimally conscious and locked-in syndrome states remain challengingly high. Clinical misdiagnosis raises profound ethical concerns in terms of medical management, treatment of pain, and end-of-life decisions. Therefore, valid diagnosis is of utmost importance in clinical settings. A number of neuroimaging and electrophysiology studies now suggest that some behaviorally “vegetative state” patients may nevertheless show atypical cortical activation during resting state conditions; in some cases, they are able to follow commands or even communicate through willfully modified brain activity. Advances in investigating disorders of consciousness with neuroimaging techniques promise to lead to a more accurate understanding of individual patients’ cognitive abilities and to shed light on the gray zones of these clinical conditions. The formulation of an ethical framework which will strike a balance between the protection of these patients and further research on disorders of consciousness is an ethical, clinical, and scientific demand. Until recently, Kavet ethnic minority people traditionally practiced swidden agriculture and accessed natural resources in the uplands as an important, and unchallenged, part of their food system. This present study aims to trace the historical transformation of land use and tenure practices by Kavet communities in Kok Lak commune in the context of various state-driven and social-economic transformations. At commune level, we look at land use changes along with the migrations associated with these transformations. We also aim to understand how these changes have induced social differentiation between households as it relates to their entitlements, their production activities and their income structure. We examine the transformation in land use prompted by a multiplicity of drivers (demographic, economic, political, institutional and cultural) and in land tenure regimes through a land control matrix that differentiates between two types of rights (the land rights of the users and the rights to manage those rights given to the users). We discovered that the Kavet people have been resilient in protecting and promoting the core of their swidden territories and traditions; however, recent developments (including the establishment of the Virachey National Park (VNP) and market incentives) have considerably fragmented their land uses, cultural values and institutions. Through forced and free migration, some households have adopted new forms of agriculture (e.g. paddy, and annual and perennial non-rice crops) and converted their swidden land into cashew plantations, while others still rely solely on the practice of swidden agriculture as a lifestyle. By reviewing past transformations, by identifying the role swidden agriculture has had and the contribution it has made to the lives of the Kavet people, we recommend that efforts be made to conserve it in recognition of the pivotal role it plays in community development and to adopt better land use planning at local level. But proper consideration should also be given to the Kavet people who do not practice swidden agriculture. [less ▲]

Achieving scientific literacy is recognized as an essential goal of secondary school education. This obviously implies that science teachers, themselves, need to be scientifically literate, which in turn requires that emphasis should be placed on Nature of Science (NoS) issues in university pre-service (and also in-service) teacher education courses. A review of the research literature reveals that the beliefs and the understanding of teachers about NoS are often simplistic and lacking internal consistency. Research has also shown that explicit approaches towards NoS teaching are more efficient than implicit ones, and that analysis of historic cases can be an effective teaching tool. Based on an analysis of the existing literature and on their teaching experience, the authors propose a NoS curriculum for pre-service science teachers in chemistry, biology and physics and critically discuss a case example of NoS teaching practice consisting of four weekly seminars of two hours each. These seminars focus on identifying the learners’ preconceptions through team work, on discussing explicitly key NoS concepts and epistemological theories based on an inductive approach, and on highlighting the pedagogical implications. Suggestions for teaching the history of science (with emphasis on chemistry) are also provided. [less ▲]

The United States, China, and the European Union have recently begun to establish new transparency standards for businesses to put an end to the financing of armed conflicts linked to the trade of mining resource. In this context, this article analyses first the respective strategies and underlying issues of these three actors in an interdependent world economic system, while taking into consideration their convergences. This preliminary comparative study then raises questions about the impact of these new standards for the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is particularly targeted by these regulations: new challenges or opportunities?
