This contribution aims at describing the numerical background associated to an efficient time integration procedure for thermomechanical elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model in a large deformation context. First, from the continuum mechanics point of view, the constitutive model is established. Within the framework of viscoplasticity, we have tried to remain as general as possible and the presented model encompasses under the same unified format, both {\it Perzyna-Chaboche} model of viscoplasticity which is well suited for moderate strain rates, as well as {\it Johnson-Cook} model which is a reference for metals submitted to high strain rates. Both incorporate nonlinear isotropic and kinematic hardening models. The classical rate-independent elastic-plastic model can then be easily recovered by setting the viscous terms to zero. Second, as the resulting continuum model is a stiff first order ordinary differential system in time, an integration algorithm is presented. This algorithm generalizes the classical "radial return algorithm", well established for elasto-plasticity, to thermo-elastic-viscoplastic models. The differential equations are numerically integrated using a thermoelastic predictor-viscoplastic corrector algorithm. The resulting algorithm is once again quite general and contains as special cases isothermal viscoplastic cases as well as classical rate-independent plasticity. Thanks to that generality, only one unified algorithm can be used both for plastic (rate-independent) as well as viscoplastic (rate-dependent) material models. Besides, in the formulation, a special care has also been taken so that all material parameters, including thermal dilatation, can be temperature dependent. As a consequence, it is also possible to model a continuous transition from elevated temperatures (that require the use of a viscoplastic model) to room temperature where rate-independent models are sometimes better suited by using a temperature-dependent viscosity that goes to zero as the room temperature is approached. This paper proposes to reconstruct the means of acquisition and transmission of anatomical and surgical knowledge in the period from the death of Alexander the Great (323 BC) to the reign of Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (913-959), through the study of archaeological, epigraphic, papyrological and manuscript sources. These testimonies bring to view strategies such as observation, experimentation, analogy and imitation, as well as oral and written teaching, redaction and copy of books (illustrated or not), elaboration of commentaries, abridgments, questionnaires and word-lists. A distinction will be drawn between texts which were addressed to physicians and medical students, on the one hand, those which were destined to philiatroi and to an educated readership, and finally those which might interest copyists and eventually tachygraphists. A general approach to real-time transient stability control is described, yielding various complementary techniques: pure preventive, open loop emergency, and closed loop emergency controls. Recent progress in terms of a global transient stability constrained optimal power flow are presented, yielding in a scalable nonlinear programming formulation which allows to take near-optimal decisions for preventive control with a computing budget corresponding only to a few runs of standard optimal power flow and time domain simulations. These complementary techniques meet the stringent conditions imposed by the real-life applications. [less ▲]

"When death knocks at the door of our ward, we do not easily open the door”, an intensivist once said. In the intensive care unit (ICU) and emergency department, care is strongly focused on cure and resuscitation. Notwithstanding the technological progress made in intensive and emergency medicine, a substantial number of the patients admitted to the ICU cannot be saved. In these cases, it is important to make a timely shift from curative efforts to palliative care, so that futile and burdensome interventions can be avoided. When death becomes imminent, a major concern of the family members and caregivers is to assure maximal comfort during the dying process. A central aspect of good end-of-life care is to keep the patient, as much as possible, free of pain and other kinds of distress. However, many critically ill patients often suffer from symptoms such as pain and delirium. More than 50 % of critically ill patients in the ICU experience moderate to severe pain and pain in critically ill patients often remains untreated [1]. [less ▲]

Positron emission tomography (PET) allows studies of cerebral metabolism and blood flow and has been widely used to investigate physiological mechanisms underlying altered states of consciousness. The aim of this chapter is to review the current literature on brain metabolism during physiological or pathological loss of consciousness including studies on disorders of consciousness arising from severe brain injury (vegetative/unresponsive or minimally conscious states), and related non-pathological conditions such as sleep and hypnotic states. Identifying brain areas specifically involved in conscious processing, these studies have contributed to our understanding of the underlying physiology of consciousness. The precuneal and cingulate cortices, for example, seem to be key areas for maintaining consciousness awareness. Other areas such as hypothalamus, amygdala or the temporo-occipital cortex seem to play a role in different states of unconsciousness such as rapid eye movement sleep and hypnosis. PET studies permit a better comprehension of the loss of consciousness, and focus the implication of specific neural areas and networks in pathologically (vegetative/unresponsive or minimally conscious states), physiologically (sleep), and hypnotically altered states of consciousness. The LIMA index conveys the environmental interest and quality of the landscape formed by the Mediterranean benthos, ranging from 0 to − 40 m, in numerical format. The LIMA index allows a comparison spatially and temporarily between sites. It is a comprehensive index which is easy to implement and is composed of two factors: a topographical description (classification of 15 typologies) and a biological description (the presence or absence of some thirty species or groups of structuring, remarkable and invasive species). The LIMA index has been validated in he Bay of Calvi (Corsica-France) where it varies between 0.31 and 0.79 on a scale of 0.00–1.00. [less ▲]

In the continuity of stakeholder theory, much of the current literature on (corporate) governance and business ethics looks at how organizations involve their stakeholders at different decision-making levels (Carroll 2004; Clarkson 1995; de Graaf & Herkströter 2007; Freeman & Reed 1983). According to Freeman (1984), stakeholders are ‘any group or individual who can affect or is affected by the achievement of an organization's purpose’ (148); typically: the owners, the managers, the workers, the volunteers, the financing bodies, the partners, the suppliers, the customers/beneficiaries, etc. A continuum of involvement can be highlighted, from the rather passive strategies (stakeholder information) to the more active ones (stakeholder representation). Among the latter, involvement or ‘cooptation’ of stakeholders in the governance structures such as the general assembly and the board of directors is increasingly presented as a strategy mirroring a long-term relationship between the organization and a particular stakeholder category (Mitchell et al. 1997). Traditionally, the owners are the category of stakeholders that is co-opted in the governance structures. Indeed, the power of decision is part of the property rights (Milgrom & Roberts 1992). It allows owners to ensure that the enterprise is run according to their own objectives. Thus, in for-profit enterprises, the investors are the owners and, as such, they have the right to decide. They exercise this right by their presence at the general assembly. But not all enterprises are investors-owned firms. In some enterprises, ownership is in the hand of other stakeholders, like in producer, consumer or worker cooperatives. Others, like nonprofit organizations, can even be seen as firms without owners (Hansmann 1996). This chapter raises the question of stakeholder involvement in social enterprises, which are ‘non-investor owned’ and can broadly be defined here as organizations pursuing social aims through their economic activity (Defourny 2001; Defourny & Nyssens 2006). In these organizations, the configuration of stakeholder involvement contrasts with that of for-profit businesses in at least two ways. First, social enterprises are more likely than other types of organizations to be set up through a process of collective entrepreneurship which often involves a diversity of actors who each have a ‘stake’ in the pursuit of one or several organizational missions (Defourny & Nyssens 2006; Haugh 2007; Petrella 2003). Second, social enterprises seem to have a stronger tendency to give a voice to the actors with whom they interact –i.e., to involve their beneficiaries, supporters, funders or partners within their governance structures (Campi et al. 2006; Huybrechts 2010; Münkner 2004; Rijpens 2010). They usually use legal forms that allow and encourage economic democracy by recognizing stakeholders other than investors the right to participate formally in the governance bodies. While, as suggested by Campi et al. (2006; 2012), the presence of multiple stakeholders observed in a number of social enterprises may be linked with the diverse goals pursued by these organizations, such presence –or absence– may be due to many factors which have no direct links with organizational goals. As suggested in this chapter, the organizational need for resources (in a broad sense) and the drive to conform to external expectations may be two key factors. In any case, the diversified patterns of stakeholder involvement in social enterprises confirm the need for a more comprehensive account of stakeholder involvement in these organizations. Although several attempts have been made to theorize stakeholder involvement in social enterprise governance, it is still a much under-researched topic. We believe that this research gap is due not only to the infancy stage in which social enterprise research is located, but also to a lack of connection and integration of this research within the broader study of organizations. Indeed, while new theoretical developments centered on the specific features of social enterprise are needed, these developments cannot be made independently from the knowledge built for more than a century regarding how organizations are structured and operate. This chapter aims to examine stakeholder involvement in social enterprise governance using two types of theoretical lenses each embodying a rich research tradition in organization theory. The first lens refers to strategy and examines organizations (in this case governance structures) in terms of their dependency on a set of resources. The second lens uses legitimacy arguments to explain organizational governance as a social construct located in a broader setting of social relationships. The first two sections will present each of these views and examine their contributions to understanding stakeholder involvement in the governance structures of social enterprises. Then, a comparative case study on work integration social enterprises will serve to illustrate how both research avenues can be combined so as to better grasp social enterprise governance as a complex and multi-dimensional practice. The “Arabian babblers” are observed in the Neguev desert for more than 40 years. These birds live in cooperative groups. They offer presents to feed each other, they endanger themselves by mobbing raptors or by coming to the rescue of group members. They play and they also often dance together. All these behaviors have received various and controversial interpretations in the scientific literature. Following the actual field’s work, one may observe that these interpretations are closely linked to the way scientists observe the birds, or even deal with them. Different practices not only construe but actually “produce” different birds. Roughly said, some of the observers take a “subjectivist” stance and interact with the birds, the other one takes an “objectivist” stance, and keeps distance from them. Each of these practices has different effects, on the birds, and on the theories. These birds therefore appear just at the edge of the categories of wild/domesticated/feral, their identity seeming to change accordingly to the ethologist who observes them. [less ▲]

This article addresses various educational cultures observed today in a variety of training and professional development contexts in the field of early childhood education. The paper also analyses methods of developing and implementing training or professional 'accompaniment'. This notion of 'accompaniment' has been developed in the context of French-speaking countries, especially in relation to the development of childcare services and the search for quality. From a case study using 'accompaniment' as a professional development initiative to consider freedom of movement for children aged birth to three years as a quality criterion in daily educational practice, the article illustrates the importance of considering innovation in the professional development of early years educators, not only as a new initiative in this specific context, but also as a signifier of the wider emergence of a new culture of professionalization where actions, actors and environment undergo change simultaneously. Kidney disease in diabetes greatly diminishes quality and quantity of life, and is very expensive. Focused attention to the early stages of diabetic nephropathy is urgently needed, to define better thérapies that may slow it down or even stop its progression, thus reducing its heavy burden. This paper addresses the challenges and conditions of a sustainability transition of suburban areas in Wallonia (Belgium), articulated around energy efficiency in the building and in the transportation sectors. Three scenarios focused on the evolution of the existing building stock are modelled and assessed (the insulation of buildings, an increase in the built density and demolition / reconstruction). Our main findings show that, beyond the traditional polarization of the debates on energy efficiency of our built environment between the “compact city” and the “sprawled city”, a new pragmatic paradigm, focused on the transition of suburban areas by “densification”, can make suburban areas evolve towards more sustainability. However, these main results focused on energy efficiency need to be studied in a larger framework to concretely operationalize a suburban sustainability transition. In this perspective, concrete prospects for a further research project on “suburban densification” are proposed. There address the opportunities for transnational cooperation as well as the proposition of potential research activities. [less ▲]

Bipshenol A (2,2’-bis-[4-hydroxyphenyl]propane) involved as monomer in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, is found in a wide variety of products including food packaging, baby bottles, food and drink cans or containers. Because of the migration of bisphenol A from the food container to the food itself, the dietary ingestion has been estimated to be the main source for the general population. The Human exposure is increasingly studied either through the determination of dietary intake or more frequently via the measurement of urinary biomarker. This chapter is reporting results from roughly 200 publications dedicated to the bisphenol A levels found in the urine of the worldwide general population and measured within the different Human biomonitoring (HBM) studies conducted in this last decade. The exposure of children and pregnant women, both known as particularly vulnerable populations, is separately examined. The impact of the different legislations implemented in different countries to reduce children’s exposure on one hand and the different campaigns dedicated to the general public on the other hand, is not observed yet through temporal trend, likely because of the quite recent character of these actions. The advantages and the limitations of biomonitoring studies are also addressed, like the high within-person variability, the difficulties to access to reliable analytical techniques, the poor inter-study comparability, and the current need of longitudinal studies to establish links between BPA exposure and chronic diseases. Since the end of the first decade of the 21st century in Belgium, there has frequently been fierce debate between the world of the politician and that of the lawyer. These debates focus on the secondary legal aid offered citizens in the low income bracket or in a specific social category. On the one hand, lawyers criticise the low rates they can charge when representing their legal aid clients. According to the members of the bar, the system of remuneration is unfavourable since the lawyers believe that the amounts they receive per hour of work provided fall well below the break-even point. On the other hand, the world of politics has noticed an increase in the volume of litigation which results in increases in budget which in turn becomes uncontrollable. All in all, this raises the question of financing secondary legal aid, which in many continental European countries is considered a citizen’s acquired right (Cappeletti and Garth, 1978, Cappeletti, 1972), or has even been recognised by constitutions since it is one of the fundamental pillars of the guarantee to (relatively) equal access to justice (Parker, 1999). Drawing on this observation of lack of budgetary control in Belgium, we ask the question of whether other institutional contexts perform better (Regan 1999; Driesen et al., 2006). [less ▲]

Bio-cultural landscapes are characterized by anthropogenic pattern features, of which the measurement constitutes a key step in landscape analysis. Metrics and strategies for this measurement of anthropogenic patterns and their dynamics are discussed, considering the pattern/process paradigm, the patch-corridor- matrix model and the complementarity of landscape composition and configuration as conceptual benchmarks. Historically, noticeable anthropogenic effects are accepted to have appeared in landscapes after the invention of agriculture and further trends of landscape change could be linked to the development of agriculture. Through time, a sequence of landscape dynamics with three stages is expected, in which a natural landscape matrix is initially substituted by an agricultural one; urban patch types will later on dominate the matrix as a consequence of ongoing urbanization. The importance of the development of agriculture and its productivity for the evolution of settlements, villages and cities is emphasized. Anthropogenic change of landscapes confirms the status of geographical space as a limited resource. [less ▲]
