Researchers in structural dynamics have long recognised the importance of diagnosing and modelling non-linearity. The last 20 years have witnessed a shift in emphasis from single degree-of-freedom (sdof) to multi-degree-of-freedom (mdof) non-linear structural dynamics. The main feature of the program of COST F3 Working Group 3 was to identify the behaviour of a structure which exhibits a localised non-linear component. Inside this working group, two benchmarks were defined and studied intensively, thereby allowing to evaluate different identification methods and compare their efficiency and specificity. For this purpose, a large amount of data (time and frequency measurements) was collected and proposed to COST F3 participants. The two benchmarks that are described in the following are: * The VTT benchmark proposed by M. Juntunen from the VTT Technical Research of Finland; * The ECL benchmark proposed by F. Thouverez from the Ecole Centrale de Lyon (France). The VTT benchmark is essentially one-dimensional but with a type of non-linearity that is not known a priori. This is different from the ECL benchmark designed to implement a cubic stiffness hardening but which address mdof systems. The ECL benchmark was challenging in the sense that the considered structure is continuous and that several modes participate in the response. *Supported by a grant from the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research. [less ▲]

Registration of new agents for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis has been based over the past few years on placebo-controlled phase III trials with the incidence of patients with new vertebral/nonvertebral fractures as the most usual primary endpoint. The use of a placebo in diseases where an active treatment is available has been a matter of debate following the update of the Declaration of Helsinki by the World Medical Association which questioned this trial design. Current regulatory recommendations within the European Union suggest that placebo-controlled trials are still the best option when assessing the efficacy and safety of new drugs intended for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. This suggestion seems to be in apparent contradiction with the current content of the Declaration of Helsinki. This paper addresses the ethics and feasibility of placebo-controlled trials in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, in the light of available therapeutic options, and discusses possible alternative approaches in those patients where placebo treatment could be deemed to be unethical. It is concluded that placebo-controlled trials remain the most efficient design to establish the efficacy and safety of a new agent for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Such trials are feasible and ethically acceptable in patients with osteoporosis but without prevalent vertebral fractures. Conversely, in patients with prevalent vertebral fractures, placebo-controlled trials are ethically questionable and non-inferiority trials are more appropriate. A relative margin of non inferiority of 20-30% is suggested, to be discussed on a case by case basis. [less ▲]

In the conception of the building envelope, the sketch design is a crucial moment of the architectural design. The first drawing gives a concrete expression to the project author's first choices regarding a set of requirements and preferences, as expressed by the multiple stakholders of the project, namely: the building owner, users, public authorities and the design team surrounding the architect. The present study explores a Multiple Criteria Decision Aid procedure (MCDA), an aid to help stakeholders improve this stage of the sketch design. The methodology is built close to the usual design process. This paper presents design and decision aid intertwined procedures and briefly describes the softwares involed: AMCE and EsQUIsE. The decision aid process is a first attempt to address the architectural sketch design challenge. The reader is expected to react to the suggested presentation of this still open MCDA problem. [less ▲]

Campbell's method for measuring the critical current in superconductors has been used to obtain the critical current density and the pinning strength in Bi1.7Pb0.3Sr2Ca2Cu3O10−y ceramics synthesized by a vitreous route. The intragrain critical current is much higher than 10^5 A/cm2 at 40 K in zero dc magnetic field. A large increase of the pinning strength is observed near the grain surface. The decrease with depth is hyperbolic. The role of the precursors in the synthesis route is emphasized for introducing specific pinning centers. The analysis takes into consideration the ceramics granular nature, i.e., the existence of intergrain and intragrain currents. ©1995 American Institute of Physics. [less ▲]

The 1/29 translocation, a structural chromosomal abnormality, is often associated with infertility. For this reason, we wished to know its frequency in the Belgian Blue breed. In this study, none of the 138 Belgian Blue bulls karyotyped carried the 1/29 translocation. We calculated that the 1/29 translocation frequency in the Belgian Blue breed must be lower than 0.69% at the 5% level. This result can be explained by the origins of the breed. The Belgian Blue breed is descended from focal dairy breeds and from the Shorthorn breed, which can all be considered to be free of the 1/29 translocation. [less ▲]

The placenta of ruminant contains binucleate trophoblastic cells synthesizing proteins, migrating cross the barrier and fusing with endothelial cells of the endometrium. Recently described were two glycoproteins from the family of aspartic proteases, apparently lacking the enzymatic activity: the pregnancy associated glycorproteins I and II (PAGI and PAGII). The first (PAGI) is largely secreted in maternal blood, this characteristic copes with the lack of proteolytic activity. The second (PAGII) is not completely characterized. However, it binds to lutropin (LH) receptors with high affinity. This binding allows to assume that PAGII is likely the same as the bovine chorionic gonadotropin identified earlier (bCG). A better characterization of these glycoproteins (PAGI and PAGII) and other members of the family (PAGIII...) will answer these questions together with the unexplained invasive process of the placenta. Ontline drawings of some fish bones are presented. These bones were selected since their shape is so typical that it allows the unambiguous identification of a definite species. Moreover, the authors did compute some regression lines between the total length of some fish species and the length of thier typical bones. Twelve such relationships were calculted for eel and one for the three spined stickleback, the perch and the bullhead. All are highly significant [less ▲]
