Data from the High Energy Neutral Atom (ENA) and the far ultraviolet (FUV) imagers on IMAGE were compared for a six hour period during which a reasonably intense substorm occurred. The substorm presented is typical of a substorm expansive phase showing that while the total electron precipitation suddenly increase one whole order of magnitude, the protons increase only about 50%. In principle ENA images represent the trapped fluxes in the magnetosphere while the proton aurora measured by the FUV SI12 instrument represents the precipitating component. At substorm onset the increase in intensity of the auroral protons and electrons is very sudden while the intensification of the ENA-s coming from regions of L<6 is much more gradual. The intensification of the precipitating electrons is relatively short lived ( ~ 10 minutes) while the ENA enhancements are long lived (almost a whole hour). Just prior to the substorm expansive phase (in the growth phase) the precipitated proton and electron fluxes encounter a minimum while the ENA-s show a slight growth. [less ▲]

This review summarizes current knowledge on the mechanisms that control aromatase activity in the quail preoptic area, a brain region that plays a key role in the control of reproduction. Aromatase and aromatase mRNA synthesis in the preoptic area are enhanced by testosterone and its metabolite estradiol, but estradiol receptors of the alpha subtype are not regularly colocalized with aromatase. Estradiol receptors of the beta subtype are present in the preoptic area but it is not yet known whether these receptors are colocalized with aromatase. The regulation by estrogen of aromatase activity may be, in part, trans-synaptically mediated, in a manner that is reminiscent of the ways in which steroids control the activity of gonadotropic hormone releasing hormone neurons, Aromatase-immunoreactive neurons are surrounded by dense networks of vasotocin-immunoreactive and tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive fibers and punctate structures. These inputs are in part steroid-sensitive and could therefore mediate the effects of steroids on aromatase activity. In vivo pharmacological experiments indicate that catecholaminergic depletions significantly affect aromatase activity presumably by modulating aromatase transcription. In addition, in vitro studies on brain homogenates or on preoptic-hypothalamic explants show that aromatase activity can be rapidly modulated by a variety of dopaminergic compounds. These effects do not appear to be mediated by the membrane dopamine receptors and could involve changes in the phosphorylation state of the enzyme, Together, these results provide converging evidence for a direct control of aromatase activity by catecholamines consistent with the anatomical data indicating the presence of a catecholaminergic innervation of aromatase cells. These dopamine-induced changes in aromatase activity are observed after several hours or days and presumably result from changes in aromatase transcription but rapid non-genomic controls have also been identified. The potential significance of these processes for the physiology of reproduction is critically evaluated. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science BY. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

Many studies have analysed psychopathological dimensions of relationship that adolescent have with food and body. But few researches have focused attention on links between psychosocial dimensions such as social representations (Moscovici, S. 1961; Lalhou, S.1995) and adolescent typical practices of eating (with family and peers) and body (diet and sport). This research is aimed to describe and to analyse representations and practices of eating and body of 60 adolescents (30 females, 30 males) equally distributed on high and low social class aged from 14 to 16 years. Hypothesis supposes changes of eating and body representations and practices according to sexe and social class of subjects. A multimethodogical approach was adopted. Data were collected in Avril 1999 in two roman colleges. Qualitative and quantitative instruments were administered in this order: a) associative network (words association), b) semi-structured interviews (18 questions about eating and body ideas and practices), c) body drawing, d) eating family drawing, e) questionnaires (Eating Attitudes Test, Eating Disorders Inventory 2). A preliminary interviews content analysis with ALCESTE (Reinert, M.1993) draw out 8 discourse classes. Four classes are linked to eating representations and practices: a) Eating Family Practice (16,85 %); b) Eating with Friends (8, 61%); c) Eating quantity and preferences (15, 97%); d) Daily meals organisation (7,40%). Others four classes are linked to body representations and practices: e) Eating Problems (20, 13%); f) Body Health and beauty (8,07%); g) Diets and Sports ( 10,86%); h) Food quality (12, 10%). Results show a general picture of eating and body representations and practices. Eating with family is a very important social situation: a script characterised by social actors, rules, actions and contexts is outlined. Food intake control and food preferences seem pregnant dimensions in identity construction process face to family and peers. Naive theories about eating disorders are constructed. Finally diet, sport and food quality seem central in shaping and modelling body. [less ▲]

The in vitro inhibitory effect of SR 27417, an antagonist of the platelet-activating factor (PAF) receptor, on PAF-induced platelet aggregation was studied in blood collected from seven healthy Friesien calves. Inhibitory effects of SR 27417 were determined at thirteen different concentrations (0.1-400 nM) by using the dose-response curves of PAF on calf platelet aggregation. In the presence of SR 27417, the maximal slopes of aggregation (%/min) induced by low and high concentrations of PAF were significantly different from the control values obtained without an antagonist at p < or = 0.05 and p < or = 0.01 respectively. In vitro PAF-induced calf platelet aggregation was dose-dependently inhibited by SR 27417. The drug inhibited PAF-induced platelet aggregation in a competitive reversible manner (pA2 = 10.46 +/- 2.36 mol x L(-1)). In conclusion, the results of our study showed that addition of SR 27417 to bovine platelet in vitro inhibits PAF-induced platelet aggregation. [less ▲]

This study is carried out to determine ovine pregnancy associated glycoprotein (oPAG) levels in the serum of Berrichone ewes throughout gestation and the first month post partum. The levels were determinated with heterologous RIA using bovine PAG as standard and tracer and rabbit antiserum against oPAG. The level of oPAG increased from the 4th week of pregnancy till 12-13th week and decreased slowly till 17th week, when increased rapidly and reached the highest level (around 600-700 ng/ml). In the sheep carrying twins, we observed higher levels of oPAG than in the uniparous sheep. After lambing, oPAG decreased rapidly in 4 week to basal values. The oPAG concentrations in the animals carrying twins was higher when comparised to single lamb. We concluded that the oPAG level depends on the number of lambs and term of pregnancy. The estimation of oPAG concentrations in the blood can be used as a indicator for pregnancy diagnosis. [less ▲]

The soivent of biological media is water and interactions between water and solutes are major to explain membrane and protein structures, Therefore, mimicking solvation effects is a challenge to compute native structures of biological molecules. Lipophlly is an, experimental approach of solvation sinca it measures the parItion of a solute between two solvents, the reterence being water. In the last decade, different attempts were made to extract parameters from lipophily that will enable to describe soivation of complex molecules. We discuss here some analysis made with the atomie transfer energy and the atomic aurface parameter in the study of protein folding and protein Insertion in membranes. [less ▲]

A chromosomal 10355-bp segment of Enterococcus hirae S185 contains nine orfs which occur in the same order as the MraW-, FtsL-, PBP3-, MraY-, MurD-, MurG-, FtsQ-, FtsA- and FtsZ-encoding genes of the division and cell wall clusters of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. The E. hirae DNA segment lacks the genes which in E. coli encode the ligases Ddl, MurC, MurE and MurF and the integral membrane protein FtsW. The encoded E. hirae and E. coli proteins share 25% to 50% identity except FtsL and FtsQ (approximately = 14% identity). [less ▲]

In this short comment on a decision of the Court of First Instance of Brussels I touch upon two classic issues of cross-border litigation : first the obligation which may be imposed on a foreign plaintiff to post bond and second the prohibition for the court addressed to review a foreign decision on the merits.
