This text focuses on how teachers and other institutional actors (such as headmasters, psychologists and social workers) offer guidance to pupils in secondary schools. It stresses the epistemological and empirical challenges inherent in a study of decisionmaking in school guidance as used by teachers, based on field theory. The text begins with a presentation of several sociological studies of how teachers construct their judgments about pupils. It emphasizes the strength of the concept of field as a key to understanding the role played by teachers in the formal process of educational (school) guidance, specifically in the case of the French "Grandes Ecoles". This section goes on to show that, with the weakening of the autonomy of (the) educational institutions, (the) French sociology of education moved away from (the) Bourdieu’s perspective, (and) to focus(ed) on the moral pluralism inherent in education and the ethical tensions that institutional actors face. The second part of the text discusses the findings of socioanthropological fieldwork undertaken in secondary schools in the French Community of Belgium. This section argues that the dynamics of judgments made by teachers today canbest be understood through their structural linkages with the structure of the field of secondary education. [less ▲]

Abstract: Since the Treaty of London in 1839, pre-war planning theories in Belgium oscillated between two positions: on one hand secure and defend which border would be endangered, on the other hand constitute in Antwerp a powerful national sanctuary. This concentration of most of the available military means in Antwerp was far more appropriate in the event of a French invasion. But this perspective decreased after the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, while the possibility of a trespassing by the two belligerents became greater and greater. The fortifications of Namur and Liège were voted by the Chambers in 1887 as a deterrent to both France and Germany. Nevertheless, without totally putting aside the defence of the Belgian southwestern border, high-ranking officers seemed to fear more and more a violation of the eastern border. Due to the completion of fortifications on the Meuse in 1892, German columns were supposed to move forward south of the river, through the Belgian Ardennes. On the eve of the Great War, King Albert I would have preferred to concentrate the army on the Meuse but his Chief of Staff selected a central position in order to maintain and secure his line of communication with Antwerp. The lack of a determined and “standardized” doctrine at the highest level of the army led to a “mixed” or compromise plan adopted in a hurry during the first days of mobilization in August 1914. Among all classes of drugs, the type 5 phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE5-i) (sildenafil, vardenafil and tadalafil) are the most counterfeited and copied in industrialized countries. This is why it is very important for regulatory agencies to have a panel of analytical methods to analyse these drugs and to be able to detect counterfeit or substandard medicines. During this chapter, several analytical techniques will be described and discussed. Among spectroscopic techniques, Raman, NIR, FT-IR and chemical imaging techniques will be envisaged. Their ability to detect counterfeits and predict if a new sample is genuine or not will be presented. Other techniques such as XRay powder diffraction and NMR spectroscopies will be briefly presented. Chromatographic impurity fingerprints will be considered and described for the analysis of suspect samples of Cialis® and Viagra®. Once again, the possibility to predict the authenticity of a new sample by the mean of this technique is envisaged. Finally, a MS-compatible UHPLC-UV method for the analysis of the three authorised PDE5-i and some of their analogues will be shortly described. This technique has been validated using spiked placebo samples in a vegetal matrix representing a suspect sample with a complex matrix. As a conclusion, a generic strategy for the detection and quality evaluation of counterfeit drugs will be presented. [less ▲]

In this article Jérôme Jamin examines the ideological development of the British National Party (BNP) and the Front National (FN) since 9/11. He argues that if both parties have evolved towards discourses more in line with democracy and liberal values, it can be explained by the opportunity the “threat” of Islam offered. After a reminder of the birth and the electoral evolution of the two parties, Jamin focuses on the perception and the definition of democracy as depicted in their manifestos and main public speeches. The study reveals an ethnic-styled perception of democracy at the BNP in opposition with a more civic perception at the FN, even if the analysis shows an ambiguity behind the use of the concept of “people” in the FN rhetoric mixing frequently “demos” and “ethnos”. The author confronts the combination of this new democratic rhetoric with the birth of Islam as a threat incompatible with “British democracy” in the United Kingdom and “Republican secularism” in France. In both parties, stereotypes of Islam are used to portray the BNP and the FN as defenders of a true and legitimate democracy and to a great extent, Jamin argues, “Islam” provided an unexpected opportunity to replace migrants, foreigners and Arabs with a new stereotype: the Muslim who threatens the separation between state and religion, equality between men and women, freedom of speech, and so on. Jamin concludes by emphasising that both parties required time to identify this new scapegoat. [less ▲]

This chapter will analyze the place of the threat alleged of Cultural Marxism in the discourse of the radical and extreme right, in the United States as well as in continental Europe and the United Kingdom. The underlying aim of this chapter is to examine the determinant role that this ‘threat’ plays in the Anglo Saxon extreme right, in particular at the intellectual, ideological and doctrinal levels, in comparison to other countries. Certainly if the Netherlands, France or other countries have parties or political groups which borrow the rhetoric of ‘fighting’ against Cultural Marxism, or its more nebulous variant, ‘political correctness’, it certainly finds its origins in the United States, and more broadly the Anglo-Saxon world. To achieve this, the chapter will begin by unpicking the meanings behind the notion of Cultural Marxism, from its origins to its use in Anders Breivik’s manifesto released shortly before the Oslo and UtØya massacres. It will show that the term emerged from the literature of American ultraconservatives following the fall of the Berlin Wall as a consequence of the disappearance of the ‘red menace’ of Communism. Secondly, it will focus on two important moments in the development of the term. It will describe the phrase’s usage from the beginning of the 2000s within the discourse of Pat Buchanan, a political commentator and multiple U.S. presidential candidate. Then it will illustrate the re-emergence of the term some 10 years later, in the manifesto of Anders Breivik and in the subsequent justification of his acts throughout his trial. In both cases, we will see that Buchanan and Breivik emphasize the same basic theme, Cultural Marxism, in their denouncement of what they see as two different threats. Finally, from these explorations of the usage of the term, the discussion will examine other current uses of the notion of ‘Cultural Marxism’ in the British and American radical right. To conclude, it will show how the ‘Cultural Marxism’ threats are used by a variety of activists to argue for the defence of their political standpoints, setting this in a language of preserving freedom and democracy, but ultimately only within a framework designed to defend Judeo-Christian values. [less ▲]

DNA oligomers are promising building blocks for the development of bottom-up nano-devices and molecular logic machines. To control and exploit their unique capabilities of self-assembling and molecular recognition a deep understanding of their dynamical properties is essential. We theoretically investigate the dynamics of a DNA dodecamer and its complexes with two common ligands, Hoechst33258 and the ethidium cation, by means of classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We study the structural relation between the flexibility of the double helix and the binding process. The dynamics of a terminal base pair unbinding is also analysed as an example of process that involves multiple energy minima in the underlying free energy landscape. [less ▲]

In the Middle Ages and premodern period, artisanal knowledge was transmitted via collections of recipes often grouped concomitantly with alchemical texts and instructions. Except for some very well-known artistic treatises, such as those by Eraclius or the Schedula diversarum artium, attributed to Theophilus, detection and identification of alchemical content within recipe books has been rare and fraught with difficulty. In a broad sense, alchemy could be defined as the ‘art of transmutation’, referring to the perfection of base or impure matter (often metal or stone) into perfect substances. In this context, alchemical procedures rely on artisanal or craft practices. Thus, any overlap between alchemy and art-technological procedures can be explained by the use of various identical materials and substances. Both are concerned with the description of colours—especially in regard to processes of change, the making of pigments, the production of artificial gemstones, the imitation of gold and silver and the transmutation of materials. Both require procedures involving precise and specifically defined actions, prescriptions and ingredients. So both use identical rhetorical recipe formulations that reflect a ‘step by step’ procedure. Assuming that alchemical and artistic texts have the same textual format, raises the question: did they also have the same methods of production and reception? Using a corpus of about forty manuscripts produced in Northern Europe between the fourteenth and the sixteenth centuries, this paper investigates the authorship and the context of production behind these writings, and scrutinizes the process of their compilation and dissemination. This serves, on a variety of levels, to elucidate information about their former nature and use. Finally, this paper examines the various ways alchemical and artisanal recipes were embedded within recipe books. It also proposes some clues to help in locating, identifying and demarcating this type of alchemical writing within the literature of recipes. [less ▲]
