One theoretical recommendation to develop sustainable rural tourism is to base its development on local resources. This should embed the tourist activity into the local society, avoid easy relocalization of investment, and help to brand the destination. The Belgian Ardennes is a proximate recreational location for Dutch people. The paper lists the local resources that attract Dutch tourists and the ways in which regional and local authorities deal with this tourist development. Based on key actor interviews and in depth analysis of the promotional material produced both by authorities and commercial companies, the paper underlines the hotchpotch of ways used in selling and consuming the Ardennes. Due to the lack of local entrepreneurship and because the Dutch tourism enterprises have better knowledge of the Dutch market, these enterprises control a huge share of tourism activities in the Ardennes. These Dutch investments change the destination as well as the local identity. Initially, Dutch companies developed a form of tourism based on nature and the rural landscape, but they diversified their activities into non land based tourism (not involving the use of land as in agriculture hors sol) and the ‘disneyfication’ of places. This Belgian case study follows more or less the well known ‘tourist destination life cycle model’, but the originality of the paper is to stress the difficulties posed for authorities to regulate tourism development and to maintain the quality of the destination. This text focuses on how teachers and other institutional actors (such as headmasters, psychologists and social workers) offer guidance to pupils in secondary schools. It stresses the epistemological and empirical challenges inherent in a study of decisionmaking in school guidance as used by teachers, based on field theory. The text begins with a presentation of several sociological studies of how teachers construct their judgments about pupils. It emphasizes the strength of the concept of field as a key to understanding the role played by teachers in the formal process of educational (school) guidance, specifically in the case of the French "Grandes Ecoles". This section goes on to show that, with the weakening of the autonomy of (the) educational institutions, (the) French sociology of education moved away from (the) Bourdieu’s perspective, (and) to focus(ed) on the moral pluralism inherent in education and the ethical tensions that institutional actors face. The second part of the text discusses the findings of socioanthropological fieldwork undertaken in secondary schools in the French Community of Belgium. This section argues that the dynamics of judgments made by teachers today canbest be understood through their structural linkages with the structure of the field of secondary education. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Among all classes of drugs, the type 5 phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE5-i) (sildenafil, vardenafil and tadalafil) are the most counterfeited and copied in industrialized countries. This is why it is very important for regulatory agencies to have a panel of analytical methods to analyse these drugs and to be able to detect counterfeit or substandard medicines. During this chapter, several analytical techniques will be described and discussed. Among spectroscopic techniques, Raman, NIR, FT-IR and chemical imaging techniques will be envisaged. Their ability to detect counterfeits and predict if a new sample is genuine or not will be presented. Other techniques such as XRay powder diffraction and NMR spectroscopies will be briefly presented. Chromatographic impurity fingerprints will be considered and described for the analysis of suspect samples of Cialis® and Viagra®. Once again, the possibility to predict the authenticity of a new sample by the mean of this technique is envisaged. Finally, a MS-compatible UHPLC-UV method for the analysis of the three authorised PDE5-i and some of their analogues will be shortly described. This technique has been validated using spiked placebo samples in a vegetal matrix representing a suspect sample with a complex matrix. As a conclusion, a generic strategy for the detection and quality evaluation of counterfeit drugs will be presented. [less ▲]

The main objective of this document is to establish if the UE can be considered as an actor of the Latin-American regional integration. The method of the current research is qualitative. The different aspects of the interregional European strategy for regional integration towards Latin America (E.I.S.R.I. – L.A.) are analyzed as follows. First, the discourse that places regional integration as one of the priorities of the given strategy is studied. Second, the economic actions responsible of materializing that priority are checked. Third, the political actions of the E.I.S.R.I. – L.A. are introduced. The results of the analysis make it evident that although EU appears to be an actor of the Latin-American regional integration, its influence seems to be restricted. Nevertheless, this affirmation should be relativized because this lack of influence can be due to an absence of mechanisms of measurement of results in terms of regional integration. [less ▲]

This chapter will analyze the place of the threat alleged of Cultural Marxism in the discourse of the radical and extreme right, in the United States as well as in continental Europe and the United Kingdom. The underlying aim of this chapter is to examine the determinant role that this ‘threat’ plays in the Anglo Saxon extreme right, in particular at the intellectual, ideological and doctrinal levels, in comparison to other countries. Certainly if the Netherlands, France or other countries have parties or political groups which borrow the rhetoric of ‘fighting’ against Cultural Marxism, or its more nebulous variant, ‘political correctness’, it certainly finds its origins in the United States, and more broadly the Anglo-Saxon world. To achieve this, the chapter will begin by unpicking the meanings behind the notion of Cultural Marxism, from its origins to its use in Anders Breivik’s manifesto released shortly before the Oslo and UtØya massacres. It will show that the term emerged from the literature of American ultraconservatives following the fall of the Berlin Wall as a consequence of the disappearance of the ‘red menace’ of Communism. Secondly, it will focus on two important moments in the development of the term. It will describe the phrase’s usage from the beginning of the 2000s within the discourse of Pat Buchanan, a political commentator and multiple U.S. presidential candidate. Then it will illustrate the re-emergence of the term some 10 years later, in the manifesto of Anders Breivik and in the subsequent justification of his acts throughout his trial. In both cases, we will see that Buchanan and Breivik emphasize the same basic theme, Cultural Marxism, in their denouncement of what they see as two different threats. Finally, from these explorations of the usage of the term, the discussion will examine other current uses of the notion of ‘Cultural Marxism’ in the British and American radical right. To conclude, it will show how the ‘Cultural Marxism’ threats are used by a variety of activists to argue for the defence of their political standpoints, setting this in a language of preserving freedom and democracy, but ultimately only within a framework designed to defend Judeo-Christian values. In this article Jérôme Jamin examines the ideological development of the British National Party (BNP) and the Front National (FN) since 9/11. He argues that if both parties have evolved towards discourses more in line with democracy and liberal values, it can be explained by the opportunity the “threat” of Islam offered. After a reminder of the birth and the electoral evolution of the two parties, Jamin focuses on the perception and the definition of democracy as depicted in their manifestos and main public speeches. The study reveals an ethnic-styled perception of democracy at the BNP in opposition with a more civic perception at the FN, even if the analysis shows an ambiguity behind the use of the concept of “people” in the FN rhetoric mixing frequently “demos” and “ethnos”. The author confronts the combination of this new democratic rhetoric with the birth of Islam as a threat incompatible with “British democracy” in the United Kingdom and “Republican secularism” in France. In both parties, stereotypes of Islam are used to portray the BNP and the FN as defenders of a true and legitimate democracy and to a great extent, Jamin argues, “Islam” provided an unexpected opportunity to replace migrants, foreigners and Arabs with a new stereotype: the Muslim who threatens the separation between state and religion, equality between men and women, freedom of speech, and so on. Jamin concludes by emphasising that both parties required time to identify this new scapegoat. [less ▲]

Let k >= 2 be an integer. A set X of integers is k-recognizable if the language of k-ary representations of the elements in X is accepted by a finite automaton. The celebrated theorem of Cobham from 1969 states that if a set of integers is both k-recognizable and ℓ-recognizable, then it is a finite union of arithmetic progressions. We present several extensions of this result to nonstandard numeration systems, we describe the relationships with substitutive and automatic words and list Cobham-type results in various contexts.
