We present a supersymmetric SU(5) x U(1)H model, free from gauge anomalies, where the Abelian factor U(1)H, introduced to account for the hierarchy of fermion masses and mixings, is broken by the same adjoint representations of SU(5) that also break the GUT symmetry. The model predicts approximate, but never exact, bottom-τ Yukawa unification. The deviations are related to group theoretical coefficients and can naturally be at the level of 10%-20%. [less ▲]

The immunodeficiency disorder, X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA), results from mutations in the gene encoding Bruton tyrosine kinase (Btk). Btk is required for pre-B cell clonal expansion and B-cell antigen receptor signaling. XLA patients lack mature B cells and immunoglobulin and experience recurrent bacterial infections only partially mitigated by life-long antibody replacement therapy. In pursuit of definitive therapy for XLA, we tested ex vivo gene therapy using a lentiviral vector (LV) containing the immunoglobulin enhancer (Eµ) and IgB (B29) minimal promoter to drive B lineage-specific human Btk expression in Btk/Teck-/- mice, a strain that reproduces the features of human XLA. After transplantation of EµB29-Btk-LV-transduced stem cells, treated mice showed significant, albeit incomplete, rescue of mature B cells in the bone marrow, peripheral blood, spleen, and peritoneal cavity, and improved responses to T-independent and T-dependent antigens. LV-teated B cells exhibited enhanced B-cell antigen receptor signaling and an in vivo selective advantage in the peripheral versus central B-cell compartment. Secondary transplantation showed sustained Btk expression, viral integration, and partial functional responses, consistent with long-term stem cell marking; and serial transplantation revealed no evidence for cellular or systemic toxicity. These findings strongly support pursuit of B lineage-targeted LV gene therapy in human XLA. [less ▲]

The B fields in OB stars (BOB) survey is an ESO large programme collecting spectropolarimetric observations for a large number of early-type stars in order to study the occurrence rate, properties, and ultimately the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars. As of July 2014, a total of 98 objects were observed over 20 nights with FORS2 and HARPSpol. Our preliminary results indicate that the fraction of magnetic OB stars with an organised, detectable field is low. This conclusion, now independently reached by two different surveys, has profound implications for any theoretical model attempting to explain the field formation in these objects. We discuss in this contribution some important issues addressed by our observations (e.g., the lower bound of the field strength) and the discovery of some remarkable objects. [less ▲]

Within the context of the "B fields in OB stars (BOB)" collaboration, we used the HARPSpol spectropolarimeter to observe the early B-type stars beta CMa (HD44743; B1 II/III) and epsilon CMa (HD52089; B1.5 II). For both stars, we consistently detected the signature of a weak (<30 G in absolute value) longitudinal magnetic field. We determined the physical parameters of both stars and characterise their X-ray spectrum. For beta CMa, our mode identification analysis led to determining a rotation period of 13.6+/-1.2 days and of an inclination angle of the rotation axis of 57.6+/-1.7 degrees, with respect to the line of sight. On the basis of these measurements and assuming a dipolar field geometry, we derived a best fitting obliquity of ~22 degrees and a dipolar magnetic field strength (Bd) of ~100 G (60<Bd<230 G within 1 sigma), below what is typically found for other magnetic massive stars. For epsilon CMa we could only determine a lower limit on the dipolar magnetic field strength of 13 G. For this star, we determine that the rotation period ranges between 1.3 and 24 days. Both stars are expected to have a dynamical magnetosphere. We also conclude that both stars are most likely core hydrogen burning and that they have spent more than 2/3 of their main sequence lifetime. A histogram of the distribution of the dipolar magnetic field strength for the magnetic massive stars known to date does not show the magnetic field "desert" observed instead for intermediate-mass stars. The biases involved in the detection of (weak) magnetic fields in massive stars with the currently available instrumentation and techniques imply that weak fields might be more common than currently observed. Our results show that, if present, even relatively weak magnetic fields are detectable in massive stars and that more observational effort is probably still needed to properly access the magnetic field incidence. The B-CGMS project, started in 1998, is the adaptation to Belgian Conditions of the European Crop Growth Monitoring System (CGMS). This project involved 3 Belgian scientific institutes: the Walloon agricultural research Centre (CRA-W), the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) and the University of Liège (ULg). The main difference with the European system is that more detailed inputs (meteorological, soil and NUTS inputs) are used. Crop yields predictions are realised on a monthly basis during the growing season (from April to September) for 6 crops (winter wheat, winter barley, maize, Potato, sugar beet, winter rapeseed). Yields predictions as well as analyses of meteorological situation of the month and RS information on the state of the crops are published in agrometeorological bulletins sent by e-mail since 2002. The information is also available on the Internet website of the project (http://.b-cgms.cra.wallonie.be). Crop yields predictions are produced through a combination of linear regression models which may include different categories of yield indicators (trend, meteo, RS and agrometeorological model outputs). Crop yields predictions procedure is currently semi-automated by the use of a statistical calibration toolbox (StatCaT). The evaluation of the project after 5 years of monitoring and prediction has first shown that final yields predicted B-CGMS as well as the ones predicted by MARS are coherent compared with official yields: no significant differences are observed. As far as the accuracy according to the month for which the prediction is made is concerned, we can notice that at agricultural circumscriptions level and for winter crops a lower precision of B-CGMS is observed before June and that there is no improvement in July (in comparison with June). The same evolution is observed for summer crops before July but in August and September, the prediction accuracy decreases. Even if calibration models present high adjusted coefficient of determination, the technological trend explains an important part of the variability and it is therefore necessary to consider the effect of a year factor on the quality of prediction in order to clearly the interest of the agrometeorological model. For some crops (as potato), adding agrometeorological yield outputs to models including already the technological trend allow to improve the quality of prediction especially for “extreme” year i.e. years where official yields move away significantly from the technological trend. For others crops as winter wheat, this improvement of the quality of prediction is not observed. However, fortunately, adding other yield indicators as meteo indicators can improve in general the quality of prediction and once again especially for “extreme” years. [less ▲]

We present ground-based multi-colour Geneva photometry and high-resolution spectra of the variable B-type star HD 131120. All sets of data reveal a monoperiodic star with a period of 1.569 days. We compare the variability of the star with a non-radial g-mode pulsation model and with a rotational modulation model. The latter model appears to be the best explanation for the observed line-profile variations of the star. Moreover, contrary to the pulsational model, it is able to reproduce the behaviour of the first three moments of the Si and He lines as well as the large variability of their equivalent width. We therefore remove the star from the list of new Slowly Pulsating B stars found from Hipparcos data. Based on observations obtained with the Swiss photometric telescope and ESO's CAT/CES telescope, both situated at La Silla, Chile. [less ▲]
