Building of an enclosure for rearing of the spotted butterfly lizard, Leiolepis guttata (Cuvier, 1829), by the first farmer in 2004 (in Hong Chinh commune, Hoa Thang ward, Bac Binh district, Binh Thuan province) is considered as a fortuitous discovery which was the initiator of the current expanding trend of its rearing. Because L. guttata is a wild animal, with strong disease resistance and adaptation capacity, livestock farmers are presently not very interested in important aspects: rearing techniques, enclosure’s types, sex ratio, diseases’ prevention, etc. Notably the building of enclosures not perfectly suitable breeds a noticeable loss of the number of lizards and a reduction in the profits for the farmers. To this end, the building of two types of enclosures adapted to local rearing conditions and the investing capital available in Bac Binh district, Binh Thuan province is presently essential. We descrite two types of enclosure: the first one surrounded by a bricks (or breeze blocks) wall, the second one fended by a fiber cement corrugated sheets wall. Moreover, we suggest to introduce plants in order to build a vegetal cover nearer to the natural environment of L. guttata: shrubs and a plant carpet becoming the preferential refuge area of the spotted butterfly lizard. In 1994, during the International Conference on Population and Development convened by the United Nations in Cairo, a shocking video was shown, realized by an operator of CNN and depicting the circumcision of a ten-year-old child living in this very same city. Discourses around female circumcision were not new in Egypt and in the international community, but what was considered as a new episode of a recurrent scandal (not the last one indeed) led to enhance the "war against bad government"[1]. A war fought by means of ideological weapons produced by expert knowledges among which the medical and the feminist ones. The assignment of a value to the state of integrity of the female body and to the women freedom of choice, both designed according to Western canons, led to different actions to “save” Egyptian women. In this context, development agencies fosters a widespread representation of the victim, constituted by the woman mutilated body. Such representation is functional to put in place programs which do not guarantee a freedom of choice, but rather require adherence to another female model, one that defines the "modern" woman. My article, based on ethnographic experience, aims at highlighting the complexity of such dynamics and the role played by humanitarianism within them. Female body becomes the arena where local and international economic powers operate, disregarding a real understanding of the practice, its meanings and its eventual change. ________________________________________ [1] Foucault, Michel. N-Heterocyclic carbenes are now commonly encountered in organometallic and inorganic coordination chemistry. The increasing attention they enjoy is due to their ability to act as ancillary ligands in a growing number of transition metal catalysts or even to play the role of nucleophilic reagents and catalysts in diverse organic transformations. As a fine addition to the NHC-Ru-alkylidenes, popular for their tremendous success in metathesis chemistry, an array of robust and stable Ru-NHCs has proven their utility in non-metathetical reactions. The present review surveys different classes of Ru-NHCs and their applications as efficient catalysts (or precatalysts) in several types of fundamental organic processes e.g. hydrogenation, hydrogen transfer, isomerization, cycloisomerization, cyclopropanation, hydrosilylation, allylation and deallylation, enol-ester synthesis, heterocycle synthesis, C-C alkyne coupling, Kharasch addition and ATRP. A special section is devoted to tandem processes some of which include concurrent or sequential metathesis steps. Relevant mechanistic and stereochemical aspects related to NHC-Ru catalysis will be highlighted. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

Hydrodechlorination of chlorinated organics is a particularly attractive alternative compared with incineration of wastes from the chlorine industry from both economic and environmental points of view. Several authors demonstrated the ability of bimetallic catalysts, composed of metals from Groups VIII and IB, to convert chlorinated alkanes selectively into less or not chlorinated alkenes. The purpose of this study is to measure catalytic activity and selectivities of 1,2-dichloroethane hydrodechlorination over Ni-Cu/SiO2 cogelled xerogel catalysts and to study relationships between catalytic activity and surface properties of bimetallic catalysts. To understand the mechanism of hydrodechlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane on a supported alloy, the surface composition of Ni-Cu alloy is measured from H2 chemisorption, XRD and TEM. Values obtained indicate a very pronounced surface enrichment with copper. Samples containing various amounts of nickel and copper are xerogels prepared by a one-step sol-gel procedure, which consists in the cogelation of the silica precursor, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), with organically substituted alkoxides capable of forming chelates with nickel and copper ions. The resulting alcogels were dried under vacuum at 80°C, calcined in air at 400°C, and finally reduced in hydrogen at 450°C. For each catalytic experiment, 0.11 g of catalyst pellets were tested. The temperature was successively kept at 200, 250, 300, 350 and 300°C. While 1,2-dichloroethane hydrodechlorination over pure nickel mainly produces ethane, increasing copper content in bimetallic catalysts results in an increase in ethylene selectivity. Used alone, copper deactivates rapidly due to their covering by chlorine atoms. When nickel is present, it supplies hydrogen atoms for the regeneration of the chlorinated copper surfaces into metallic copper. The specific consumption rate of 1,2-dichloroethane decreases when copper loading increases. The turnover frequency, that is, the number of catalytic cycle per active site (nickel atom and its surrounding copper atoms) and per second, seems to be independent of surface composition of alloy particles. This poster summarize the firsts results of the PhD project started on October 2012 about the catalytic purification of biogas. The aim of this project consists in the development of Ni/Al2O3 catalyst in order to reform the tars present in the outlet gas of biomass gasifier. In order to obtain catalysts with high performance and lifetime, materials need to have optimized specific surface and metal particle dispersion. This poster investigate the effect of different surfactants (Pluronic P123; F127; stéarique acide, EDAS) on the materials properties. [less ▲]

The routine use of arterial grafts in coronary surgery is facilitated by peroperative adjunction of antispasmodic drug to reduce the event of spasm. Diltiazem has been favoured in most clinical studies devoted to the radial artery graft. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a spasm preventing protocol associating hydrostatic dilation of the graft with a diluted solution of papaverine and nicardipine infusion, starting preoperatively and continued postoperatively in i.v. and per os forms. Between September 1996 and March 1997, a consecutive series of 50 patients underwent myocardial revascularization using the radial artery. The radial artery was prepared by hydrostatic dilation with papaverine (1%) and nicardipine was administrated at 0.25 microgram/kg/min and titrated according to the arterial systemic pressure. Operative mortality was 4% (sepsis). There was no evidence of perioperative MI nor hypoperfusion syndrome. Mean CKMB level at 18 hours was 36 micrograms/l. No ischaemic anomalies of the ECG were detected. Angiography performed in the last 20 patients showed a 98% (51/52) permeability rate for all graft; 19/20 radial grafts (95%) were patent. One radial graft presented a 50% stenosis at the proximal anastomosis, and another a moderate spasm (40%) in the middle part of the conduit. This study confirms that the radial artery conduit can be used with satisfactory results for routine coronary artery bypass. The use of nicardipine allows the control the vasoreactivity of the radial graft without totally obviating at least angiographic spasm. This drug is easy to titrate, and well tolerated in association to beta-blockers in the routine perioperative management of the coronary patients. [less ▲]
