Improvements on the Liége cyclotron have yielded an energy resolution comparable to that of classic electrostatic accelerators. The latest upgrades of the High-Energy High-Resolution beam line (HE-HR) are presented which consist of the addition of both a new extraction nozzle for non-invasive in-air measurements and a new particle-detection setup developed to take full advantage of the increased probed thickness with depth sensitive analytical methods. The suitability of the new setup and the advantages provided by the larger flexibility in choosing both the proper particle with an extended energy available will be illustrated by discussing latest results of studies recently led on Roman gilding techniques on cultural heritage artifacts by means of “High-Energy” alpha backscattering spectrometry combined with PIXE. This paper aims at reporting a new, simple and low-cost experimental technique designed for investigating the electrical properties of disk-shaped superconducting samples. The principle is similar to that of an induction motor. Two neighbouring and 90° out-of-phase AC magnetic fields are applied perpendicularly to the disk to be measured. As a result, the material experiences an electromagnetic torque which depends on its electrical properties. A new damage-plastic model has been developed to capture the development of permanent strains and the degradation of elastic properties in concrete subjected to thermo-mechanical loading. A new formulation of the Eurocode 2 concrete model at elevated temperature has been implemented in which the transient creep strain is treated by an explicit term in the strain decomposition. This new model gives the same answer as the Eurocode model when the load and the temperature increase, but the new model is better than the Eurocode model at capturing the concrete behavior when the load or the temperature decrease owing to the explicit transient creep term. This new concrete model, called Explicit Transient Creep Eurocode model (ETC), has been implemented in the software SAFIR. [less ▲]

Prostate cancer develops from clones that are already present as early as thirty-five years of age, when circulating concentrations of androgens are high. The progression of the disease is low and the cancer is diagnosed at a more advanced age. Prostate cancer evolves from an androgen dependant stage to stage where it escapes from all anti-androgenic treatments. The patient usually dies within two years following the diagnosis of advanced cancer. Therefore, it is of great interest to develop new therapies for androgen independent prostate cancer. The androgen independent evolution of prostate cancer is a complex phenomenon at the cellular and molecular levels. It includes an increased sensitivity to growth factors, the control of proliferation pathways, apoptotic and survival pathways as well as the control of angiogenesis. Epidemiological studies have also suggested that certain vitamins or phyto-oestrogens could protect against prostate cancer development. The present review attempts to present an overview of the fundamental research in cellular signalling which could be interesting as target for the treatment of androgen independent prostate cancer. Also the potential interest of non-androgenic steroids was reviewed for the same goal. [less ▲]

<BR /> Aims: In recent years several in-depth investigations of the three prototypical Of?p stars were undertaken. These multiwavelength studies revealed the peculiar properties of these objects (in the X-rays as well as in the optical): magnetic fields, periodic line profile variations, recurrent photometric changes. However, many questions remain unsolved. <BR /> Methods: To clarify some of the properties of the Of?p stars, we have continued their monitoring. A new xmm-Newton observation and two new optical datasets were obtained. <BR /> Results: Additional information about the prototypical Of?p trio has been found. HD 108 has now reached its quiescent, minimum-emission state for the first time in 50-60 yr. The échelle spectra of HD 148937 confirm the presence of the 7d variations in the Balmer lines and reveal similar periodic variations (though of lower amplitudes) in the He i λ 5876 and He ii λ 4686 lines, underlining its similarities with the other two prototypical Of?p stars. The new xmm-Newton observation of HD 191612 was taken at the same phase in the line modulation cycle, but at a different orbital phase from previous data. It clearly shows that the X-ray emission of HD 191612 is modulated by the 538d period and not by the orbital period of 1542d - it is thus not of colliding-wind origin. The phenomenon responsible for the optical changes appears also at work in the high-energy domain. There are problems however: our MHD simulations of the wind magnetic confinement predict both a harder X-ray flux of a much larger strength than what is observed (the modelled differential emission measure peaks at 30-40 MK, whereas the observed one peaks at 2 MK) and narrow lines (hot gas moving with velocities of 100-200 km s[SUP]-1[/SUP], whereas the observed full width at half maximum is ~2000 km s[SUP]-1[/SUP]). Based on observations collected at the Haute-Provence Observatory, at the La Silla and San Pedro Mártir Observatories, and with XMM-Newton, an ESA Science Mission with instruments and contributions directly funded by ESA Member States and the USA (NASA). Bacteria and fungi use a set of enzymes called nonribosomal peptide synthetases to provide a wide range of natural peptides displaying structural and biological diversity. So, nonribosomal peptides (NRPs) are the basis for some efficient drugs. While discovering new NRPs is very desirable, the process of identifying their biological activity to be used as drugs is a challenge. In this paper, we present a novel peptide fingerprint based on monomer composition (MCFP) of NRPs. MCFP is a novel method for obtaining a representative description of NRP structures from their monomer composition in fingerprint form. Experiments with Norine NRPs database and MCFP show high prediction accuracy (>93 %). Also a high recall rate (>82 %) is obtained when MCFP is used for screening NRPs database. From this study it appears that our fingerprint, built from monomer composition, allows an effective screening and prediction of biological activities of NRPs database. [less ▲]

Finite element simulations involving large strains and large displacements imply the setting up of a precise kinematics for the integration scheme. Moreover, anisotropic mechanical behaviours have to be expressed in an appropriate local reference frame. In the present paper, a computational procedure is derived from a particular velocity gradient definition. Its implementation in a finite element code is described. Application to a simple shear test is proposed. For anisotropic materials, a sinusoidal behaviour of the shear stress component is emphasized. This is due to the anisotropic yield locus and appears in the case of a saturated isotropic hardening law. [less ▲]

Its development is largely related to the creation of a new type of demand resulting from the growth of new service activities and from new expectations regarding physical units, environment, accessibility and location choices – on both sub-regional and local scales. It has been favoured by the appearance of new property stakeholders, Belgians as well as foreigners (developers, investors and estate agents), but also by public authorities (the Walloon Region and economic development supra-communal agencies). This market’s emergence is related to the deepening of territorial contrasts as property development projects usually reinforce strong areas. [less ▲]
