Variceal bleeding is frequently the initial presentation of a previously unknown cirrhosis. Portal hypertension and its complications without liver cirrhosis should raise the possibility of presinusoidal portal hypertension, and the diagnosis of hepatoportal sclerosis. These patients need to be investigated for coagulation disorders. A hypercoagulable state is often associated. Risks and benefits of anticoagulation should be further investigated in these patients.

[less ▲]

The title of Robert Drewe’s latest novel, Grace (2005), shares with J. M. Coetzee’s antonymous Disgrace (1999) a polysemous quality which derives from both works’ attempt to capture the ethical stance of a society in a way which has personal and political ramifications at the same time. The Australian text shows some concern with the predicament of a boatload of asylum seekers from Indonesia, who later escape from their detention centre in the Kimberleys; but Drewe’s progressive denunciation of Australia’s treatment of refugees is potentially compromised by the Australian anxiety over territorial integrity which provides an unshakeable context for this kind of thematic development. More generally, my paper will explore the ambiguities attending a discursive move which seeks to absorb race into larger categories of political meaning, and the related difficulty of achieving the ‘grace’ of complete freedom from colonialist parameters in an Australian culture where some suspense over territory continues to brood. We investigated the influence of the sleep/waking cycle, the effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) and of the vigilance-promoting drug modafinil on the amino acid contents of rat brain cortex. No significant nycthemeral variations in amino acid levels could be detected. PSD (12-24 hours), using the water tank method, significantly increased the levels of glutamate and glutamine. The increase was still observed after the sleep rebound period. gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels did not change significantly during the instrumental sleep deprivation but increased during the rebound period. Control experiments indicate that the increase in glutamate and glutamine levels is due to PSD rather than to the stress associated with the experimental procedure. The increase in glutamate content cannot arise only from transamination reactions, because the levels of other amino acids (such as aspartate) did not decrease. Modafinil treatment did not significantly modify the brain cortex content of any of the amino acids tested. [less ▲]

The paper first distinguishes ritual action for sovereigns, which integrates the honoured rulers at a practical level within the religious life of a community, from other, more discrete configurations of the relation between royal and divine power. Among these trends, focus is on the rhetorical and spectacular dimension of wonder. The strategies of wonder-making are first studied in theory through paradoxography, then the categories of grandeur, exoticism and technical excellence are identified in action in Alexandrian religious life and festivals. Master of an empire with universal claims and collector of everything that is beautiful, rare and precious in the world, the king distances himself from his subjects in order to make his superior status explicit. Distance is, however, only the premise for the king to manifest himself to the great public through epiphanies that can be compared with those of divine power. The paper also discusses the way the conformism of court elites not only satisfied their own need to claim for distinguished social status, but also helped royal message spread and caused loyalty to it. This study is the revised Spanish version of a study originally published in French as part of a research project on translated literature in Argentina at the close of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The weekly Caras y Caretas is analysed concerning the selection criteria of translated texts, strategies of translation, the presence or omission of the translators’ names, the connection between translation and other discourses and pictures in the periodical, and confronted also with a wider historical context, in an attempt to reconstruct the aesthetical and ideological functions of these translations in the illustrated popular press.
