Cet article interroge la relation intermédiale entre peinture et photographie, et notamment la transformation des pratiques de réception liées à la transduction de certaines iconographies religieuses d’un médium à l’autre. Il décrit les effets de sens que les textes picturaux et photographiques engendrent lorsqu’ils sont censés représenter non seulement l’invisible, mais aussi la transcendance. Si la peinture religieuse a toujours été légitimée à représenter Jésus-Christ, les saints et les visions de l’au-delà, la photographie artistique a au contraire subi des « contraintes interprétatives » attribuées par la doxa à sa genèse à empreinte. Si la doxa a donc relégué les textes photographiques artistiques à la seule fonction de représenter l’« ici-et-maintenant », le cas de la photo dévotionnelle est différent. En effet, la photographie dévotionnelle, engendrant des pratiques productives, interprétatives et communicationnelles tout à fait différentes de celles de la photo artistique, a mis en scène une autre conception du médium photographique, qui le met en communication étroite avec la syntaxe figurative de l’icône, ou même avec le saint suaire de Turin – image qui n’est pas faite de main d’homme (acheiropoïètes) et qui devient support d’une révélation sans médiation. We study passive and nonlinear targeted energy transfers induced by resonant interactions between a singledegree- of-freedom nonlinear energy sink (NES) and a 2-DOF in-flow rigid wing model. We show that it is feasible to partially or even completely suppress aeroelastic instability by passively transferring vibration energy from the wing to the NES in a one-way irreversible fashion. Moreover, this instability suppression is performed by partially or completely eliminating its triggering mechanism. Numerical parametric studies identify three main mechanisms for suppressing aeroelastic instability: recurring burstout and suppression, intermediate suppression, and complete elimination.Weinvestigate these mechanisms both numerically by the Hilbert–Huang transform and analytically by a complexification-averaging technique. Each suppression mechanism involves strong 1:1 resonance capture during which the NES absorbs and dissipates a significant portion of energy fed from the flow to the wing. Failure of suppression is associated with restoring the underlying triggering mechanism of instability, which is a series of superharmonic resonance captures followed by escapes from resonance. Finally, using a numerical continuation technique, we perform a bifurcation analysis to examine sensitive dependence on initial conditions and thus robustness of instability suppression. [less ▲]

This paper presents experimental results corroborating the analysis developed in the companion paper, Part I (Lee, Y., Vakakis, A., Bergman, L., McFarland, M., and Kerschen G., "Suppression Aeroelastic Instability Using Broadband Passive Targeted Energy Transfers, Part 1: Theory," AIAA Journal, Vol. 45, No. 3, 2007, pp. 693-711), and demonstrates that a nonlinear energy sink can improve the stability of an aeroelastic system. The nonlinear energy sink was, in this case, attached to the heave (plunge) degree of freedom of a rigid airfoil which was supported in a low-speed wind tunnel by nonlinear springs separately adjustable in heave and pitch. This airfoil was found to exhibit a at flow speeds above the critical ('flutter") speed of 9.5 m/s, easily triggered by an initial heave displacement. After attachment of a single degree of freedom, essentially nonlinear energy sink to the wing, the combined system exhibited improved dynamic response as measured by the reduction or elimination of limit cycle oscillation at flow speeds significantly greater than the wing's critical speed. The design, application, and performance of the nonlinear energy sink are described herein, and the results obtained are compared to analytical predictions. The physics of the interaction of the sink with the wing is examined in detail. [less ▲]

In Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, mutants defective in the cytochrome pathway of respiration lack the capacity to grow under heterotrophic conditions (in darkness on acetate). In the dark- strain duM18, a + 1 T addition in a run of four Ts, located at codon 145 of the mitochondrial cox1 gene encoding subunit I of cytochrome c oxidase, is responsible for the mutant phenotype. A leaky revertant (su11) that grows heterotrophically at a lower rate than wild-type cells was isolated from dum18. Its respiration sensitivity to cyanide was low and its cytochrome c oxidase activity was only 4% of that of the wild-type enzyme. Meiotic progeny obtained from crosses between revertant and wild-type cells inherited the phenotype of the mt- parent, showing that the suppressor mutation, like dum18 itself, is located in the mitochondrial genome. In order to map the su11 mutation relative to dum18, a recombinational analysis was performed on the diploid progeny. It demonstrated that su11 was very closely linked to the dum18 mutation less than 20-30 bp away. The cox1 gene of the su11 revertant was then sequenced. In addition to the + 1 T frameshift mutation still present at codon 145, an A-->C substitution was found at codon 146, leading to the replacement of a glutamic acid by an alanine in the polypeptide chain. No other mutations were detected in the cox1 coding sequence. As the new GCG codon (Ala) created at position 146 is very seldom used in the mitochondrial genome of C. reinhardtii, we suggest that the partial frameshift suppression by the nearby substitution is due to an occasional abnormal translocation of the ribosome (+ 1 base shift) facilitated both by the run of Ts and the low level of weak interaction of alanyl-tRNA. We study passive and nonlinear targeted energy transfers induced by transient resonant interactions between an essentially nonlinear attachment and an in-flow rigid wing model. We show that it is feasible to partially or even completely suppress aeroelastic instabilities in the wing (limit cycle oscillations-LCOs) by passively transferring broadband vibration energy from the wing to the attachment in a one-way irreversible fashion. We study the nonlinear dynamical mechanisms that govern TET and show that they are series of transient or sustained resonance captures in different resonance manifolds of the dynamics. Aeroelastic instability suppression is performed by partially or completely eliminating the triggering mechanism for aeroelastic instability. Through numerical parametric studies we identify three main mechanisms for suppressing aeroelastic instability, and investigate them in detail, both numerically by Empirical Mode decomposition (EMD), and analytically by slow/fast partitions of the transient dynamics. The presence of limit cycle oscillations within the flight envelopes of existing aircraft is well documented. Future air vehicle designs are also likely to encounter limit cycle oscillations under certain loading conditions. These steady-state constant amplitude oscillations are detrimental to mission effectiveness and lead to increased fatigue of aircraft structures. Previous efforts to suppress limit cycle oscillations have focused primarily on active control methods. These efforts have been effective but require significant measurement and control resources. In this study the investigators test a passive method for suppressing limit cycle behavior. A nonlinear energy sink, based on the principle of nonlinear energy pumping, is shown to be effective for increasing the stability threshold of a nonlinear two degree of freedom aeroelastic system. Limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) commonly require restrictions on the operation of high- performance aircraft and have the potential to cause structural damage or failure. This paper summarizes recent theoretical findings on the application of passive and targeted nonlinear energy transfer (\nonlinear energy pumping") for the reduction or elimination of LCOs in self-excited systems. This NES has been used successfully to suppress LCOs of an elastically mounted, rigid airfoil in flow. The theoretical results are in agreement with experimental studies of a practical airfoil with an attached NES. These experimental results, presented in full in a separate paper, verify the capacity of the NES to reduce or even eliminate these undesired oscillations and to extend the operating speed range of the wing. We report measurements of the irreversible magnetization M-i of a large number of YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals with columnar defects (CD). Some of them exhibit a maximum in M-i when the density of vortices equals the density of tracks, at temperatures above 40 K. We show that the observation of these matching field effects is constrained to those crystals where the orientational and pinning energy dispersion of the CD system lies below a certain threshold. The amount of such dispersion is determined by the mass and energy of the irradiation ions, and by the crystal thickness. Time relaxation measurements show that the matching effects are associated with a reduction of the creep rate, and occur deep into the collective pinning regime. [less ▲]

Toll-like receptors (TLR) are an important component in the innate immune response to a wide variety of pathogens. Recently, a series of studies has addressed the hypothesis that TLR4 also participates in the host innate response against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants and young children. In most of the studies available, RSV, which is not a natural pathogen of mice, has been systematically used in mouse models of human bronchiolitis, with conflicting results. Pneumonia virus of mice (PVM), a member of the pneumovirus genus, shares many similarities with RSV. The serological and structural relationships that exist between them suggest that the immune response to these viruses may be similar in their respective natural hosts. To determine the role of TLR4 in host defense against PVM, TLR4-competent and TLR4-deficient mice were intranasally infected with PVM. Variation of body weight, pulmonary function values, histopathology, and pulmonary viral loads were analyzed. None of the investigated clinical, functional, histological and virological parameters was different between strains, which demonstrates that the sensitivity of the mouse to its natural pneumovirus infection is independent of the presence or absence of TLR4 sensing. We studied the inhibition of voluntary temporalis muscle activity after stimulations of extracephalic cutaneous or mixed nerves in 23 healthy volunteers, 29 patients suffering from migraine without aura, 24 from episodic and 42 from chronic tension-type headache. Two successive EMG suppressions were induced bilaterally after stimulating at 40 mA the index finger or the median nerve, but not after stimulations of the sural or peroneal nerves. They differed from those obtained after labial commissure stimulation at 20 mA, i.e. the classic temporalis silent periods ES1 and ES2. Overall prevalence of index- (3%) and median nerve-induced (16%) early suppression was much lower than that of labial-induced ES1 (100%); prevalence of index-induced late suppression (index-"ES2") was 62% and that of median-"ES2" 48%, compared with 97% for labial-ES2. Latency and duration of index-/median-"ES2" were not significantly different between groups. Index-"ES2" occurred significantly more often in migraineurs (83%) than in controls (48%) suggesting that the spino-bulbar pathways involved in index-/median-"ES2" are hyperexcitable in migraine.
