Previous methods of microencapsulation are unable to process particles smaller than 100 microm without organic solvents or the use of multistep processes. The present study investigates the feasiblity of a one-step spray-drying process to microencapsulate erythromycin and clarithromycin, antibiotics known to have an unpleasant, bitter taste. Mixtures of clarithromycin (5% by weight) or erythromycin (30% by weight) with a biodegradable polymer were prepared and spray-dried under specific conditions of temperature and turbine speed. This process resulted in the microencapsulation of 80% of each drug as determined by high pressure liquid chromatography. Particle size ranged from 1 to 80 microm as determined by electron microscopy. These data show that microencapsulation of macrolides using a spray-drying technique is feasible. Spray-drying microencapsulation might be useful in the formulation of palatable oral suspensions of bitter tasting drugs. [less ▲]

We present a microfabricated optical cavity, which combines a very small mode volume with high finesse. In contrast to other micro-resonators, such as microspheres, the structure we have built gives atoms and molecules direct access to the high-intensity part of the field mode, enabling them to interact strongly with photons in the cavity for the purposes of detection and quantum-coherent manipulation. Light couples directly in and out of the resonator through an optical fiber, avoiding the need for sensitive coupling optics. This renders the cavity particularly attractive as a component of a lab-on-a-chip, and as a node in a quantum network. [less ▲]

Miniaturised atom optics is a new field allowing the control of cold atoms in microscopic magnetic traps and waveguides. Using microstructures (hereafter referred to as atom chips), the control of cold atoms on the micrometer scale becomes possible. Applications range from integrated atom interferometers to the realisation of quantum gates. The implementation of such structures requires high magnetic field gradients. The motivation of this work was to develop a suitable fabrication process for micromachined high-density current-carrying wires for atom guides. However, the developed process may be used for a variety of applications such as on-chip inductors and microtransformers. In order to realise the micromachined wires for atom guides different designs and fabrication processes were investigated. We discuss the feasibility and the suitability of the fabrication process based on gold sputtering technique to realise such devices. As an alternative we have considered a lower cost technique based on gold electroplating. For the electroplating we used commercial full bright cyanide free gold plating solution (gold sulphite, mild alkaline solution with pH = 9 Gold ECF 60, brightener E3) containing 10 g/dm gold from Metalor. Some analytical and measurement results of magnetic atom traps are also presented in this paper. [less ▲]
