High-quality radiotherapy (RT) treatment planning requires the combination of information arising from multiple medical imaging modalities. For this reason, RT implies the setup and the management of complex flows of images between the various modalities and software of the hospital. Even though biomedical images are most commonly stored and transferred using the DICOM standard, it remains hard to automatize and optimize these clinical flows that are very specific to each hospital. This stems from the fact that programming the DICOM network protocol requires both a high level of familiarity with the DICOM standard as well as substantial experience in computer programming. This motivates the introduction of the Orthanc software in the medical practice to improve the RT imaging workflow. [less ▲]

The ortho-to-para abundance ratio (OPR) of cometary molecules is considered to be one of the primordial characteristics of cometary ices. We present OPRs of ammonia (NH[SUB]3[/SUB]) in 15 comets based on optical high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of NH[SUB]2[/SUB], which is a photodissociation product of ammonia in the gaseous coma. The observations were mainly carried out with the VLT/UVES. The OPR of ammonia is estimated from the OPR of NH[SUB]2[/SUB] based on the observations of the NH[SUB]2[/SUB] (0, 9, 0) vibronic band. The absorption lines by the telluric atmosphere are corrected and the cometary C[SUB]2[/SUB] emission lines blended with NH[SUB]2[/SUB] lines are removed in our analysis. The ammonia OPRs show a cluster between 1.1 and 1.2 (this corresponds to a nuclear spin temperature of ~30 K) for all comets in our sample except for 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 (73P/SW3). Comet 73P/SW3 (both B- and C-fragments) shows the OPR of ammonia consistent with nuclear spin statistical weight ratio (1.0) that indicates a high-temperature limit as nuclear spin temperature. We compared the ammonia OPRs with other properties ([SUP]14[/SUP]N/[SUP]15[/SUP]N ratios in CN, D/H ratios of water, and mixing ratios of volatiles). Comet 73P/SW3 is clearly different from the other comets in the plot of ammonia OPRs versus [SUP]14[/SUP]N/[SUP]15[/SUP]N ratios in CN. The ammonia OPRs of 1.0 and lower [SUP]15[/SUP]N-fractionation of CN in comet 73P/SW3 imply that icy materials in this comet formed under warmer conditions than other comets. Comets may be classified into two groups in the plot of ammonia OPRs against [SUP]14[/SUP]N/[SUP]15[/SUP]N ratios in CN. [less ▲]

Purpose: Successful downstaging of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) into the Milan criteria (MC) remains a controversial indication for orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). In Belgium, successful downstaging of HCC is an accepted non-standard- ized exception (NSE) for liver allocation. This NSE group rep- resents a unique cohort to analyse if OLT can be safely offered to patients with those extended allocation criteria. The aim of this study is to compare the overall and recurrence free survival after cadaveric OLT between patients with successful downstaging (MILDOWN) and patients always inside the MC (MILIN) from all Belgian transplant centres. Methods: We ret- rospectively analysed all patients listed for OLT with HCC and underlying cirrhosis between 12/2006 and 12/2011 from all Belgian liver transplant centres. Successful downstaging was defined as bringing a patient who was outside the MC into the MC after locoregional therapy (LRT). Results: Overall 381 patients were listed in Belgium during the study period. Of these, 320 received OLT. 248 were MILIN, 62 were MIL- DOWN and 10 were transplanted outside MC. Downstaging treatment included transarterial chemoembolization (TACE; n=26), radiofrequency (RF; n=9), transarterial radioembolisa- tion (TARE; n=4), resection (n=3), percutaneous ethanol injec- tion (n=2) and a combination of the above-mentioned therapies in 18 cases. In the MILIN group 67.3% received locoregional therapy before transplantation, with no significant differences in the distribution of treatment type compared to the MIL- DOWN group. At listing there were no significant differences between the MILIN and MILDOWN group for age, gender and underlying liver disease. Median time on waiting list between the two groups was similar (120 days vs. 115.5 days). Overall survival at 1 year was not significantly different between MILIN and MILDOWN (87.1% vs. 79%; p=0.120). 1.6% of patients were lost to follow-up in both groups. Although not significant, recurrence free survival at 1 year tended to be higher in the MILIN group than in the MILDOWN group (83.9% vs. 74.2%; p=0.073). Conclusion: In this large Belgian multicentre cohort, overall and recurrence free survival at 1 year are not signifi- cantly different between patients who have been downstaged successfully and patients who were always inside the Milan criteria. However, a longer follow up period will define, if the trend of lower survival in the successfully downstaged group becomes significant. Factors associated with HCC recurrence have to be identified. Context: This is the first step in a project to combine studies of eclipsing binaries and oscillating stars to probe the interior of Blue Stragglers (BS). This may imply a way to discriminate observationally between different birth mechanisms of BS stars. Aims: We study the open cluster NGC 2506 which contains oscillating BS stars and detached eclipsing binaries for which accurate parameters can be derived. This will tightly constrain the cluster isochrone and provide an absolute mass, radius and luminosity-scale for the cluster stars along with the cluster age, metallicity and distance. The present work focuses on obtaining the light curves of the binaries and determine their orbital periods, on obtaining power spectra of the oscillating BS stars to select targets for follow-up studies, and on searching for gamma Doradus type variables which are also expected to be present in the cluster. Methods: With a two-colour, dual-site photometric campaign we obtained 3120 CCD-images of NGC 2506 spread over four months. We analysed the BI time-series of the oscillating stars and used simulations to derive statistical uncertainties of the resulting frequencies, amplitudes and phases. A preliminary mode-identification was performed using frequency ratios for the oscillating BS stars, and amplitude ratios and phase differences for a population of newly detected gamma Doradus stars. Results: We quadrupled the number of known variables in NGC 2506 by discovering 3 new oscillating BS stars, 15 gamma Doradus stars and four new eclipsing binaries. The orbital periods of 2 known, detached eclipsing binaries were derived. We discovered a BS star with both p-mode and g-mode variability and we confronted our gamma Doradus observations with state-of-the-art seismic models, but found significant discrepancy between theory and observations. Conclusions: . NGC 2506 is an excellent target for asteroseismic tests of stellar models, as strong external constraints can be imposed on the models of a population of more than 20 oscillating stars of different types. Based on observations obtained at the Flemish Mercator telescope on La Palma, Spain, the Danish 1.5-m telescope at ESO, La Silla, Chile, and on observations collected at the European Southern Observatory, Paranal, Chile (ESO Programme 075.D-0206(B)).
