This research aims to study the social and economic processes which encourage the spread of mafia practices among some Italian entrepreneurs in the Belgian food sector. My working hypothesis is that mafia practices are violent and predatory strategies to monopolize the economic market, which rely on the use of heterogeneous and cross-class social networks. In this view, these activities of old and new Italian entrepreneurs in Belgium are not the result of the exportation of mafia methods through migratory or cultural ties, but rather the outcome of a complex economic system of production in which certain Italian entrepreneurs have established profitable enterprises in the legal market using violent modalities of accumulation and specific strategies of relation. This research is developed through an ethnographic approach grounded on biographical collection and on participant observation, which is carried out through direct involvement in commercial activities in the sectors of interest. [less ▲]

Accurate glycaemic control (AGC) has been shown to be beneficial to the outcomes of critically ill patients. These benefits may also extend to patients in less acute wards, particularly those with existing diabetes. However, the clinical demands of an intensive care glycaemic control protocol are not appropriate for the general wards where the nurse-to-patient ratio is much lower and patients do not typically have an intravenous line available for insulin delivery. Thus, there is a need for a safe, effective glycemic control protocol tailored to the needs of general wards to enable appropriate care for diabetic patients and further testing of the benefits of glycaemic control for this cohort. This paper presents the development and testing of such a protocol for glycaemic control in the general wards. The DRAGONS protocol (Dynamic Regulation for Accurate Glycaemic-control Optimising iNsulin Subcutaneously) was designed to use subcutaneous insulin and only require blood glucose (BG) measurements every four hours, while maintaining BG concentrations within the range 4.4-8.0 mmol/L. Virtual trial simulation indicated an expected time in the target band of 73.0%, with < 2% risk of BG < 4.0 mmol/L. In the first patient recruited to the pilot trial, the DRAGONS protocol achieved 46% time in band and no severe hypoglycaemic episodes. This trial has also highlighted the need for careful selection of the insulin injection site to prevent excessively rapid transport to plasma. © IFAC. [less ▲]

The 20-nanogold cluster Au-20 exhibits a large variety of two- and three-dimensional isomeric forms. Among them is the ground-state isomer Au-20(T-d) representing the stable cluster with a unique tetrahedral shape, with all atoms on the surface, and large HOMO-LUMO gap which even slightly exceeds that of the buckyball fullerene C-60. The anionic cluster Au-20(-) (T-d) that holds its parent tetrahedral symmetry features a high catalytic activity. The list of the properties of the 20-nanogold clusters surveyed in the present work ranges from the energetic order of stability of its isomers to the optical absorption and excitation spectra of the Au-20(T-d) cluster. We also report the structures and properties of its doubly charged clusters Au-20(2+) and Au-20(2-) and computationally confirm that Au-20 is indeed stable. The zero-point-energy-corrected adiabatic second electron affinity of Au-20(T-d) amounts to 0.43-0.53 eV that is consistent with the experimental data. In addition, we provide computational evidence of the existence of the novel, hollow cage isomer of Au-20 and analyze its key properties. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [less ▲]
